Page 4: Parish News - St. Patrick's Church · 2019-08-01 · love to our God. Our church building is not a status symbol about ourselves, but it is our offering to God; it is our attempt

Ever since moving to St. Patrick’s I’ve consistently noticed a wonderful phenomenon that only a hand full of churches enjoy. It seems like every time I walk in front of our church façade there are passers-by reading the signs or looking to enter the church for a visit. In so many ways, the church has an appeal which draws people in and invites them to a moment with God. In short, the beauty of our church evangelizes! Sadly, its not uncommon in our day that other efforts in evangelization are not met with such welcome. Indeed, trying to talk about our faith in public can win stares or harsh words in return. Frequently, our silent efforts to spread the faith go unnoticed by the public. But yet, the beauty and serenity of our historic church cuts through that baggage and still beckons to modern man. Once they step inside, they have the privilege of the presence of Blessed Sacrament, above all. But also their eyes and hearts are drawn upward as they confront what is supernatural visually and spiritually. As the Psalmist says, “I have loved, O Lord, the beauty of thy house; and the place where thy glory dwelleth.” (Psalm 25:8) With all this in mind, we should take a moment to reflect on our efforts to preserve and restore our two historic churches. But not just preserve and restore, we too must reap the deeper benefits of the beauty that surrounds us. The first goal of restoring must be carried out as acts of love to our God. Our church building is not a status symbol about ourselves, but it is our offering to God; it is our attempt to reflect His beauty and truth. So, the spirit with which we labor to restore our church must be a spirit of love and worship. Secondly, the fruit of our efforts is hallow and lifeless unless that fruit is a spiritual one. Our time spent in a beautiful building should be rich with devotion—do you ask the saints to pray for you as you pass their images in windows and statues? When you see the angels, does the thought come to your mind that you have entered the dwelling place of God, leaving the world behind? In short, the beauty of our church cannot be enjoyed as if passing by so many pieces of art in a museum. The beauty of this church exists not for your enjoyment, but for your salvation! Just reflect on all the effort and skill that went into any of the beautiful features of the church. Such a consideration can move you to a greater striving in your own life. If so many past generations saw fit to do something beautiful for God, then surely, the beautiful can still be done within our church today. Ultimately, the beauty that we experience within the church must move us to bring that beauty into the world. Christ-like charity is the greatest beauty that exists! And our lives must be saturated and overflowing with it! For this reason, I look at my long list of repairs and improvements with hope and with joy. I’m grateful to the many who have already stepped forward with their generosity of time and money. Thanks to our White Linen Night volunteers and our Men’s Club, the St. Joseph’s Guild for their work on our church floor. In our efforts, we are spreading the Gospel in a way that speaks to people of today. I’m excited to be serving the Lord in awe with you!
