Stone Dinton & Hartwell

In the Parish Magazine office we are usually delighted to hear that people read the magazine as far away as Upton and Sedrup. However recently we were pleased to learn that we are read in Canada. A relative of a former Stone family contacted us and very kindly offered some items for the local history group. We have other connections with the wider world. At least two men commemorated on the War Memorials had emigrated to Canada in the early years of last century and then enlisted in the armed forces in the First World War. We also had men from New Zealand and Australia in the army and in the Second World War from America and Italy. All this comes courtesy of the internet, a subject I rather questioned last month. Modern technology makes contact with the other side of the world easy and quick. Someone said “the world is my parish”, not sure who, Sue Spinks and friends at Eythrope Road chapel might. Perhaps this applies to magazine!

STONE AND DINTON JOINT PATRONAL FESTIVAL SERVICE AND DEDICATION OF THE NEW FACILITIES

ST PETER AND ST PAUL DINTON On Sunday 28

th June, there was a good-sized congregation for this special

Service attended by the Archdeacon of Buckingham, the Venerable Karen Gorham. The Service began with a short presentation by ‘The Learning Communities Group’, calling us all to “Get on Board” as we plan our future strategy and outreach. This theme was taken up by the Archdeacon in her sermon as she encouraged us to concentrate on the essentials of the Gospel, working together, and maintaining our trust in God when the going gets tough. Those who worked hard to provide the new facilities were to be congratulated but we were all reminded that this is just the beginning of our vision to use the Church more effectively in bringing God’s Kingdom to this community. We all turned to face the west end of the Church, where the new kitchen and toilet facilities are situated, and Karen dedicated the work from the newly-created meeting room on the first floor. The Choir sang a rousing introit ‘Jubilate Deo’, an anthem ‘The eternal gifts of Christ the King’ and a beautiful ‘Irish blessing’ written by Bob Chilcott. It was really good to have the pipe organ in use again, and as usual, Sylvia Eaton and her team had beautifully decorated the Church with floral displays. We enjoyed fellowship together, with refreshments, after the Service. PETER RICH


OPEN THE BOOK

We have now completed our 2nd year of weekly assemblies at Stone and Cuddington and Dinton Schools. Each week our team presents a different Bible Story as we follow the Bible Society’s ‘Open the Book’ programme. Props and costumes are taken along, and usually some children are fitted out to be soldiers, disciples etc. A quarter of a million children across the country are now hearing Bible Stories in this way, and Bible Society’s vision is to reach every Primary School and all 4.5 million pupils. Do pray for our team in this valuable ministry. We are looking for another coordinator when Peter leaves next year. Any offers?

Dinton Church Lamps and Three of the Stained Glass Windows There is a brass plaque on the North wall of Dinton Church and the inscription reads:

To The Glory of God And in loving memory of

Emma Ripley Bland the lamps in this Church are dedicated

by her sister and three nieces September MDCCCXC

Emma Ripley Bland (1818-1890) was the eldest daughter of Joseph and Ann Bland (nee Ripley) and was born in Middlesex. The Ripleys were a successful family of merchants who had a number of ships trading with China. Her father, Joseph who was also a successful merchant in London, moved to Liverpool in 1844 becoming one of the ‘Merchant Princes of Liverpool’.

The 1871 Census shows that Emma was an Independent Lady, visiting or lodging at Upper Farm, Upton which was the farm bailiff’s house with her sister Julia’s daughter, Julia Bland Holmes. Lower Farm Upton, was owned by Frances Roads. In 1871 Emma commissioned George Devy, the eminent Victorian architect, to design and build ‘Grassholme’, now called ‘Dinton Croft’ and she moved in during 1872 together with her niece Julia Bland Holmes. The Rev. Charles Henry Burton was the vicar of Dinton from 1869 to 1879 and the 1871 Census records that he lived in the Vicarage with his wife, Lydia and their four children, Emiline, Ernest, Hilda and Basil. They had a cook, a parlour maid, a housemaid and an under housemaid. On the 23

rd July 1871 Emiline died and her father and mother had a stained glass

window erected in her memory on the north wall. In 1877 his wife Lydia Helen, aged 54, died and the Rev. Burton had a stained glass window made and dedicated to her in Dinton Church. It is on the south wall of the Chancel and the subject is ‘Three Children’.

Between 1872 and 1879 Emma’s brother Joseph, who had been living in Shanghai, China, stayed with her. He died in on the 3

rd May 1879 and is buried in

Dinton Churchyard.

On 31st July 1879 the Rev. Charles Henry Burton and Emma Ripley Bland’s niece, Julia Bland Holmes, were married. He was 62 and she was 26. The witnesses were her brother James Piercy Holmes and her two sisters Emily Edith Seymour Holmes and Adela Anne Holmes. The couple moved to The Rectory, Huggate, Yorkshire with the Rev Burton’s youngest son, Basil. Julius Henry Burton was born in 1880, Julia Caroline Burton in 1881 and Walter Holmes Burton


in 1884. On the 30th March 1885 the Rev Charles Henry Burton died aged 67 and

his widow Julia Bland Burton had a stained glass window made and dedicated to him in Dinton Church. It is in the north wall of the Chancel, in the centre, entitled ‘Baptism of Christ’. During 1883 The Bucks Herald records Emma helping with the flowers in the church together with her other sister, Frances Welles Bland. On the 24

1890 Emma died and was buried in the same grave as her brother Joseph in Dinton churchyard. Later that year Frances, her sister, had the lamps installed and the brass plate erected. The three nieces it refers to are Julia Bland Burton, Emily Edith Seymour Holmes and Adela Anne Holmes. Jon Horn June 2015

Open Studios in Stone

We had mixed weather for our 2015 open studios at Stairways but lots of people came to look at the paintings, rag rugs and canal art by Diana Hartley, Francesca Rogers and Josie Brandon at the front of the house and the textile work of Horizons at the back. The Horizons stitchers had decorated the tree outside the studio with colourful birds and there were fabric birds for sale, in addition to cards and gifts.

Many people stayed for a cream tea in the garden - and some came more than once! We were delighted to raise well over £500 for the Cancer Care Unit at Stoke Mandeville from the teas and the sale of small teddy bears.

Many, many thanks to all the people who helped with teas, making cakes, helping our charities and just by supporting us. Lovely to see you all - come again next year!

There will be a Beer Festival at the Seven Stars in Dinton on Saturday 22nd

August from 12 noon to 6pm. There will be a selection of real ales, Morris

Dancers and music. Dinton is on the 280 bus route.

The event is being held to raise money for a community project.


Wychert Vale Benefice

Worshipping God Serving Community Sharing Life

We are pleased to report that all is proceeding well with the formation of our new benefice of Wychert Vale. THE LEGAL BIT: The PCCs of all our churches have approved the revised version of the Pastoral Measure, which is the legal document, to bring our new benefice into being. The Diocese and local deanery have been fully supportive and the Measure will be published in final form in early Autumn this year. Provided there are no objections the Measure will become effective and our new Benefice will be born. THE REST: The Merger Steering Team is preparing a joint Benefice Profile which is a formal document including role descriptions for Rev’d Margot Hodson as 'Benefice Rector' and the new full time paid post to be known as 'Benefice Vicar' based in Stone. This will enable us to advertise for the new post and have someone in position by June 2016. We are also looking at benefice structures and the wording of our new Covenant which was discussed at the two Away Mornings. Progress is being made in many areas. Please continue to pray for the merger process and especially for those involved in bringing our new benefice into being. June 2015


“Change and Decay – All Around Me: A Lament”

‘Everything is further away than it used to be.

It’s twice as far to the corner shop, and they’ve added a hill, I notice.

It seems to me that they are making stairs steeper than in the old days, and have you noticed the smaller print they are using in newspapers?

There’s no sense going to Church or trying to have a conversation – everyone speaks in such a low voice I can barely hear them.

Even people are changing: I ran into an old friend the other day and she had aged so much she barely recognised me.”

Well, that’s one view of old age. John Wesley thought differently: he had the right idea:

Try to grow old gracefully and do the best we can as long as ever we can.

His final journey on horseback (!) outside London, when he was 87, was to East Anglia.

It is recorded that in one of his sermons he quoted a little jingle he had adapted:

“Oft I am by women told:

‘Poor John Wesley thou growest old:

See thy hairs are falling all;

Poor John Wesley! How they fall!”

Whether I grow old or no, by these signs, I do not know.

But this I need not to be told:

‘Tis time to live if I grow old.”

th August at 2.00pm. Our local belles (young and not so young!!) will be

modelling at this friendly, informal Fashion Show in the lovely gardens at Tyringham Hall, Cuddington and, afterwards, there will be the chance to buy from the range of affordably priced clothing. In case of rain, the show will go on under the shelter of gazebos!! And, men, don’t be shy to come – there could be something for you too!! August Gardening

A month to enjoy the fruits of one's labours, but there are always plenty of jobs to do. Strawberries of which I have had the best crop for many years need attention. It is better not to leave the plants more than 3 years as the plants are liable to virus and the ground gets tired. One way to grow is a three row system. Each year dig up and destroy the oldest row and plant a new row either from runners or new plants, at the same time remove all the unwanted runners, otherwise the bed becomes overgrown.

Make sure all beans and peas are picked when still young otherwise the plant will begin to stop producing new growth. Onions will begin to die down but do leave until fully ripe before lifting and storing.

August is the time to plant spring cabbage seed, to be planted out in September, overwintered to produce cabbages in the spring. Another way is to use newer F1 varieties which are sown in the spring.

P.S I do so agree with Aunt Em. Nothing beats new potatoes but they must be home grown. It is easy to grow a small number of plants as these days Garden Centres do sell small quantities of seed potatoes, so next year try growing some. PS

THE SETHULE ORPHANS TRUST

For several years people in Dinton and Stone, and elsewhere, have contributed £1 a month to this charity which tries to look after orphans in rural Zimbabwe. They are usually without parents because of deaths from AIDS and they live with grandparents or aunts and uncles who need to find money not only to feed them but also to pay for school fees.

Every summer I receive a letter from the children to whom our money goes. We have just parted from Hope, who took her exams last November but I want to quote from Bheki who is in his final year at Witwatersrand University. His first letter was a single A3 page but last summer I received 3 pages describing, in perfect English, his experiences in South Africa's lawyers' department:

"I love the law and every day I am grateful that I am living my dream. That is why I am very grateful to you all for your support and assistance in making my dream come true" We only contribute a small proportion of his expenses but I hope you will think that it has not been wasted.

Every spring since 2009 I have sent a reminder to our subscribers that it is time to renew their money for the trust (£12 per year). However last year I had the misfortune to be hit by a motor car before I could distribute the letters and it was Christmas before I was able to remember it! My wife Joan did receive lots of payments and sent them off, for which I am most grateful to her and to the donors. August 2015 Dear Friends,

SAVING OUR PLANET or SAVING SOULS? Until comparatively recently, it tended to be the liberal wing of the Church who were concerned about caring for our environment and the world in which we live, whilst the evangelicals believed it to be far more important to concentrate on the saving of souls! Thanks to the pioneering work by people like the late Dr John Stott, this has now changed, and it is now recognised as part of our Christian and God-given duty to care for the planet on which He has placed us. WHY IS IT OUR CHRISTIAN DUTY TO BE CONCERNED? In Genesis, we are told that God created us in His image, and gave us the responsibility for caring for His creation. If we, humans, don’t do it, who will? So what are the most urgent issues we face today? 1.) POPULATION GROWTH Recent statistics have indicated that in this country alone the population is likely to rise by tens of millions in the next 20 years. The earth cannot sustain the present drain on its resources, and OUR greed leads to others need. Last month, when the General Synod of the Church of England met, there was a call to urge worshippers to dedicate the first day of every month to fasting and prayer “for planet Earth”, as part of a drive to instil ‘green’ ideas on its followers. Candidates for Ordination as Priests will also be trained in eco-theology, and plans are being considered to install solar farms across parts of the Church’s extensive land-holdings, in addition to existing wind farms. Fasting may also help us to control our greed – obesity is, as you might say, a growing problem! Apart from draining valuable resources, it is going to cost the NHS increasingly large amounts of time and money in the coming years. 2.) RESOURCE DEPLETION Whether it’s draining the planet of fossil fuels which have developed over millions of years, cutting down valuable rain forests, depleting fish stocks or whatever, our world’s resources are rapidly dwindling. Sooner or later we will all be the losers as we fail to care for God’s world. Experts inform us that the Earth has entered its sixth ‘mass extinction’ phase, with animals dying out at 100 times the normal rate. Humans have created a ‘tonic mix’ of habitat loss, pollution and climate change. Scientists at Stanford University in America say it is the biggest loss of species since the mass extinction that wiped out the dinosaurs 66 million years ago.


3) WASTE DISPOSAL How we dispose safely of the millions of tons of waste products discarded each day, even after recycling efforts, is a major problem. I am personally disgusted at having to pick up and bin other people’s rubbish as I walk to the shop every morning. The oceans are full of plastic bags, bottles etc which are crippling our marine population. The Pope, in his recent encyclical on the environment, said that “the Earth is rapidly being turned into an immense pile of filth by unbridled greed”. 4.) OUR DAMAGED ATMOSPHERE Perhaps without realising it, we daily contribute to the increasing pollution of the Earth’s atmosphere. I have a cousin in New Zealand who quite regularly has to have skin grafts due to cancer, no doubt largely due to the depletion of the ozone layer above the Earth, and skin cancer here is on the increase too. Global warming is likely to further the extremes of climate for us all, and its effects we have already begun to experience. As I write, temperatures are predicted to rise this week to 33ͦC! So yes, no doubt our God wants us to be in the business of saving souls, but when we face Him as our Judge at the end of our lives, and He asks us how we have cared for the beautiful planet entrusted to us, I wonder what your answer will be?

UCARE Bulb Day Wednesday 9th September

We start the bulb planting season in style this year with a charity day of free bulb dedicated talks from top

garden experts. All proceeds from the gardens for the day go to UCARE (Urology Cancer Research and

Education).

Michaelmas Daisy Weekends 19th & 20th + 26th & 27th September Visit our gardens to see our famous

herbaceous border in all its late summer glory as it bursts back into

life with Michaelmas Daisies (Asters).

The gardens are open in aid of the National Garden Scheme on Sunday

20th September.
