It’s time to get more involved You’re more than a “holly” or “lily” Catholic. You come to Mass every Sunday. You don’t let the collection basket pass without a contribution. You extend greetings to fellow parishioners during the “kiss of peace”, maybe even acknowledge them when you meet at Sprouts or Albertson’s. But somehow it’s not enough. You feel like being something more, like doing something more. And maybe, just maybe, you’re open to doing something about it. Well, here’s your chance to do more than just come to Sunday services. It’s our St. Timothy Ministry Expo and it’s happening after all this weekend Masses. Come and you’ll discover over 50 different ways you can get more involved in the life of your parish. If you want to share your experiences as a new mother (or get some life-saving advice) there’s a ministry just for you. If you want to share the Word of God as a lector or children’s liturgist, you’ll have the opportunity. If you’re an older teen that wants to mentor a younger one, you can. If you’re a young adult that wants a social life beyond the bar scene you have a place to hang. You can teach Tiny Tim’s or chaperone

Confirmation students. You can join others for extra prayer or bible study. You can work soup kitchens. You can prove cleanliness is next to godliness and attend to the altar linens. You can knit hats and scarves for those in need. Point is: you have more than enough opportunities, here at St. Tim’s, to share your time and talent. Fact is: Jesus Christ is expecting you to do so. (Scripture is full of verses that will attest to it.) In this day and age we live in communities where we may not know who are neighbors are. Let’s not live the same way in our faith community. Remember, we are all called to serve. With over 50 ministries represented at this weekend’s Ministry Expo, you’ll be sure to find your calling. You’ll also find how much it can truly enrich your faith. -Rick Sikorski, Stewardship Committee Member NOTE: If you haven’t already, be sure to pick up a “Ministry Opportunities” booklet in the back of the church or in the church office. It’s a directory of most all the ministries here at St. Timothy. If you can’t make the Ministry Expo, you can always contact the coordinator of the ministry that interests you.

Congratulations Rachel Joseph: One of our Distinguished Youth! Rachel Joseph, who has served Mass at 7am Sunday morning for years, was recently honored as “Youth of the Year” for the City of Aliso Viejo. Here is her write up in the awards program: Rachel Joseph embodies leadership, spirit and volunteerism. In fact, her resume reads like a novel of community service. The Aliso Niguel High School student has volunteered for the City at events like Snow Fest, Founder’s Day Fair and the Pet and Vet Clinic. She has tutored kids at the Boys & Girls Club and in math and science at Aliso Niguel High School. She has set up and managed the City’s booth at the Aliso Viejo Community Associations' Fourth of July celebration and Soka’s International Festival. She served as a camp counselor at the YMCA and assisted with the Aliso Viejo Library’s summer reading program. If that weren't enough , Rachel is a longtime Girl Scout and member of the National Honor Society. For her outstanding efforts, she earned the prestigious Girl Scout Gold Award and Presidents’ Volunteer Service Award. An exceptional student, Rachel has also been recognized as Student of the Semester in Math and she received the President’s Educational Award for Outstanding Academic Excellence.

Congratulations to Rachel… and to her parents Annie and Job

Thank you to those that have answered the Call to become Catechists: echoing the Word of God to the children in Faith Formation this year!

“A catechist is an ordinary person who is extraordinary because he or she teaches as Jesus did.”*

A Catechist is still needed for 5th grade students, Tuesdays from 5:45 p.m.—7:00 p.m. The Faith Formation program provides age appropriate, user-friendly curriculum. We invite you to join our team to help educate children in the teachings of our Catholic faith. Instruction takes place, in a classroom setting, the first three weeks of each month beginning in October through May. You may elect to be part of a catechist team to share the duties in the formation of children. The rewards are eternal and all is provided for you. Please contact Valerie Skaare, Elementary Coordinator, at 495-4126 or [email protected]. *From the poem “A Catechist Is” by Msgr. John Francis Murphy

I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. Choose life then….(Dt 31:19) Jewish people use a well-known toast, one which reflects their resiliency to centuries of pogroms and cruel persecution. It is often used as a synonym for a wedding celebration. The toast is L’Chaim. “To Life!” In the coming weeks we shall be confronting, always with sadness and sometimes with anger, assaults on the dignity of human life. Our attention will be focused on abortion, assisted suicide, the degradation and murder of vulnerable young people through human trafficking, acts of terror, domestic violence, the abuse of children and the elderly, the neglect and exploitation of the poor, the shunning of the refugees of war and famine. There will be many calls to action. We shall be urged to take on the forces of darkness and death by manifesting our support for the dignity of life through public demonstrations, letters and petitions to elected officials, education and community prayer. In all cases our actions are to be nonviolent, driven not by hate but by our love of God and all his children. In the words of Martin Luther King, “Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” Throughout this month dedicated to reverence for life, may we also find time to acknowledge with feelings of gratefulness the precious gift of our own lives, all the joys and pleasures and even sorrows that are proof of the limitless generosity of God. L’Chaim ! (Bill Kramer, Life, Justice and Peace Commission)

Next weekend, October 8-9, we are celebrating “Pennies From Heaven" with the distribution of baby bottles for donations. We invite you to join us in donating your coins and dollars to this important major event. All monies raised will be used to support Respect Life organizations within Orange County. MARY’S SHELTER provides safe and loving shelter for girls under eighteen years of age with crisis pregnancies. There are many programs for these young mothers to ensure the health of mother and child, to help develop skills, and to help them set future goals. VIETNAMESE HOT LINES These are 24-hour hotlines with trained client advocates who offer free client advocacy, self-administered pregnancy testing, infant supplies and medical referrals to Vietnamese pregnant women in crisis. LIFE CENTERS located in Santa Ana, Stanton and La Habra are Pregnancy Resource Centers that offer free self-administered pregnancy tests, infant and maternity supplies and clothing, client advocacy, and medical referrals. How can you help? Just take a baby bottle after Mass on the weekend of October 8 and 9 , put your contributions in the bottle, and return it before Mass on the weekend of October 29 and 30 (or to the church office). For more information, kindly contact Vicky Fershin at 280-1474, Patti Mires at 933-0474.
