another because of the love and
forgiveness which we have
experienced from God.
Eros: this is associated
with our emotions, of being in
love. Such a love drives us to
gether in mutual physical,
emotional and sexual support
of one another. In short Eros
is the love shared between a
man and a woman.
Then there is Agape or unconditional love. This is the love
which drives the Church. This is the love we experience from God
through Jesus Christ. This is the love which allowed Jesus to take
up His cross and suffer for our sakes. This is the kind of love which
has no conditions on it at all. This is the love which allows and moti-
vates us to love our neighbour as ourselves and motivates us to love
our enemies, even though that's the last thing we want to do. Uncon-
ditional love is what leads us, guides us, motivates us to acts and
deeds of kindness without thought of the cost.
Yes, in our human frailty we make mistakes. But mistakes
won't change God’s unconditional love for us. That's the promise of
the cross, of the ascension, of Pentecost and why we celebrate a
triune God. That's God's promise to everyone who makes a decision
to accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour. We are all loved
unconditionally by God and we're called to let God's unconditional
love be seen in us by how we love the world unconditionally. Living
in the spirit of unconditional love demands grace and sacrifice that
can only come through Christ living in us and extending that love
through us.
The love of God for each one of us is absolute. Nothing in
this world can change that. Nothing we can do, say or think can
change the love of God. God demonstrated this when he allowed his
Son to die on the cross for us. The truth is Jesus died for us whether
we believe it or not, like it or not, accept it or not. We can choose all
sorts of things to believe in, material, intellectual or spiritual, but
God will wait with arms ready to embrace. The love of God is the
one great certainty – in this world and beyond this world.
I wish you all of God’s blessings for the summer months.

Rev
Confirmation Preparation On Sunday 30th November 2014, there will be a Confirmation Service (10.30am). If anyone, adult or child, is inter-
ested in being confirmed please contact Rev Chris Norburn on 01379 898685.
Confirmation preparation (over a minimum of 4 sessions) will help candidates to learn about Holy Communion by
exploring the objects, words and actions of the Communion service.
Depending on numbers, adults and children may be taught together.
Thank you
A group of 4 to 8-year-olds were asked: "What does love mean?"
Here were some of their answers:
"When someone loves you, the way they say your name is
different. You know that your name is safe in their mouth."; "Love
is what makes you smile when you're tired."; "Love is when my
mummy makes coffee for my daddy and she takes a sip before giv-
ing it to him, to make sure the taste is OK."; "Love is like a little old
woman and a little old man who are still friends even after they
know each other so well."
But one of the children summed it up very much like Jesus:
"When my grandmother got arthritis," she said, "she couldn't bend
over and paint her toenails anymore. So my grandfather does it for
her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That's love."
The action of love speaks louder than words, as illustrated
by this demonstration of love. A 4 year old child whose next door
neighbour was an elderly gentleman who had recently lost his wife
saw the man crying. So he went to the old gentleman, climbed onto
his lap, and just sat there. When his Mother asked him what he had
said to the neighbour, the little boy said, "Nothing, I just helped him
cry."
As a church we have just celebrated the ascension of Jesus
to the right hand of his heavenly and our heavenly Father; Pentecost
when we celebrate the birth of the Church, as the Holy Spirit is
poured out on the disciples making them bold and courageous in the
witness of Jesus Christ; and Trinity Sunday, when we celebrate God
as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. All of this points to God’s great love
for us.
The Bible clearly teaches us to live in and by the Holy Spirit
(Galatians 5:22-25). For me living in the spirit has to begin with
love. Someone put it this way: "Love is the key. Joy is love singing.
Peace is love resting. Patience is love enduring. Kindness is love's
touch. Generosity is love's character. Faithfulness is love's habit.
Gentleness is love's self-forgetfulness. Self-control is love holding
the reins." Love is the key.
The word we use for love in English actually comes from
four different Greek words. Storge, Philia, Eros and Agape. Each of
these words defines a different kind of Love. So Storge is about
affection. We use this word when we talk about something we like
intensely. For example the affection we have for pets, for our jobs,
our hobbies, for sports etc.
Philia: this is the affection or love we have for a friend or
someone of like mind and interest. It is the bond that holds church
congregations together. It's brotherly or sisterly love toward one

The bag of unpleasantness you left hanging on the gate at the top of
Garden House Lane is still waiting where you left it. Your prize is

How good to be in an area with such honest folk who were able to

The bus enables people who don’t have access to other transport to,
for example, visit the shops, the doctor or friends. We have a team
of 7 drivers (male and female), who offer their time for a half or a
full day on a regular basis to fit round their own commitments. Due
to a volunteer driver being unable to continue we are looking for
someone to take his place.

Tony Diamond presented the lives of the six wives of Henry VIII and gave an insight into their characters in his humorous talk to the May meeting of the Heritage Circle. Whereas he was in sympathy with most of these women, he dismissed Henry VIII as a ‘tyrant.’ Henry’s first wife, Katherine of Aragon arrived in England in 1501 aged 16 to marry Henry’s elder
brother, Arthur. She was widowed within five months but her father-in-law, Henry VII, kept her in England as a virtual prisoner so as not to lose her considerable dowry. When Henry VIII succeeded to the throne in 1509 he decided to marry Katherine. This was problematic. The Pope had to give permission for this but the Bible was contradictory about marriage to a brother’s wife. The critical question was whether the marriage had been consummated. Henry claimed this had not happened and the Pope was encouraged to grant his consent. Katherine proved to be a popular queen with the people. She gained a huge victory over the Scots in the Battle of Flodden in 1513 while Henry was campaigning less successfully in France. She saved 31 apprentices from a gruesome death after a riot in 1517 but she failed to produce a son. The only child to survive from the marriage was Mary. Henry was anxious to secure the succession with a male heir. He feared the political instability which had preceded the Tudor accession in 1485. Eventually, Henry decided to divorce Katherine on the grounds that her first marriage had been consummated. Katherine was confined to Kimbolton Castle until her death in 1536. In the interim, Henry married Anne Boleyn. Anne too only produced a daughter, Elizabeth, which led Henry to become disenchanted with their relationship by 1536. A sympathetic view of Anne was presented. She has tended to be condemned by history but Tony Diamond thinks that she was not guilty of the charges of adultery, incest and witchcraft which led to her execution. Within one day, Henry had married Jane Seymour. This time the couple appear to have been happy. She gave birth to a son, Edward, but she died shortly afterwards. Henry commemorated her in various art works and was eventually buried alongside her in St George’s Chapel in Windsor. Henry waited three years before his next marriage in 1540 to Anne of Cleves. She too has been disparaged by history in the view of Tony Diamond. Henry took an instant dislike to her, possibly because she had led such a sheltered life that she could not engage with his humour. After their annulled marriage, Henry treated Anne with generosity. She lived at Hever Castle and he referred to her as his ‘loving sister’. Anne is the only wife of Henry to be buried Westminster Abbey. Katherine Howard was only married to Henry for just over a year before being charged with adultery and executed in 1541. Whereas Anne Boleyn was ‘framed’ in Tony Diamond’s opinion, Katherine was probably guilty. Finally, Henry married Katherine Parr in 1543. She was 31 and had been widowed twice. She was a very accomplished woman. She managed to outlive Henry despite a scare in 1546 when she was accused of witchcraft. After Henry’s death in 1547 she married Thomas Seymour before she died in childbirth in 1548 at Wolf Hall. The evening concluded questions from the floor which led to an interesting discussion of issues surrounding the crisis in 1936 and the future of the monarchy.
The next meeting of the Heritage Circle will be at 7.30pm on Wednesday 25 June at Rickinghall Village Hall when David Cawell presents And the Bands Played On – a tribute to village and town bands that survived the First World War. New members and visitors are welcome. Further information about the Heritage Circle is available on its website ... www.heritagecircle.onesuffolk.net.

Our latest news is that Rickinghall Parish Council has donated a seat for Northfield Wood and it was installed by Tim Gaddis at the beginning of June. Tim also does good work mowing the paths in Northfield Wood and Low Meadow, which enable people to get to the seats if they want to; there are two in Low Meadow.
We have spent some time pulling up unpopular fireweed, ragwort, and thistles. We don’t get them all, but we hope to reduce their number year on year. As far as wildflowers are concerned, we like to leave the mowing until after the seeds have set, so that we have some more the next year.
More light filters into Miller’s Orchard now and it is lovely to walk through. Although the path is close to Mill Road, the wood feels quiet and peaceful.

I am always very flattered at the number of people who not only read the Parish Magazine (and why wouldn't they as it is brilliant!) but who also read what I have written ... thanks very much! If you have got this far, then you are obviously reading this month's contribution!
The Coffee on the Corner event in June was some-what quieter than usual - not quite sure why, but I am
sure some folks, at least, have had holidays. If you were one of those, then I hope you had a grand time away. Having said that, there was the usual buzz of conversation in the room and the stand-in team who were helping to run the Coffee Shop managed admirably to make teas and coffees and provide and serve delicious cakes and pastries. The cheese scones, made by Susanne Dunsire, arrived later than the normal offerings, but disap-peared with the usual speed ... the whole plate was empty in less than five minutes! We were supporting the work of the Fisherman's Mission, an admirable charity that provides emergency and welfare support to fisher-men and their families 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks of the year. Your kind donations totalled over £80.00 and we are, as always, grateful for your generosity.
Next month's Coffee on the Corner will be held on Tuesday 8th July and we shall be donating to Nelson's Journey, the charity that supports bereaved children and their families; in August we will be open for our customers on Tuesday 12th when we shall support the work of The Soldiers' Charity ... do watch out for posters giving further details, or better still come along to discover more, both about the charities and the nice people who help me to run the Coffee Shop each month. The September date will be Tuesday 9th at the usual time ... 9am to 12 noon.
If you feel you would like to know more about the Coffee Shop or any of the happenings at Parkview, please call me on 01379 890423.

BOTESDALE BOTESDALE
All Councillors were in attendance for the 9th June meeting, which
started late due to a joint meeting with Rickinghall Parish Council
which was held at 7pm. The two parish councils were in attendance
to talk to Philip Tallent, Corporate Manager - Elections and Elec-
toral Management at Mid-Suffolk/Babergh District Councils, about
the process of a merger of the two councils. The subject of a merger
has been brought up a number of times prior to this and the parish
councils wanted to know more about what it would entail. With that
accomplished, the parish councils will each discuss this further at
their own parish council meetings, and decide whether they want to
go forward with a merger. Both councils would need to be in agree-
ment to make the request for a merger from the District Council. In
the meantime, if you have any feelings about whether or not a
merger should take place, please let us know.
Public Forum – The meeting was attended by our District Council-
lor, Sara Michell, who spoke about the proposed Community Infra-
structure Levy. The CIL is a charge, brought into being by the Plan-
ning Act 2008, which allows local authorities to levy “clear and
unambiguous costs on development to fund infrastructure develop-
ment, circumventing the need for drawn out and sometimes confus-
ing Section 106 negotiations”. The District Council is currently con-
sulting on the CIL until 18 July – see www.midsuffolk.gov.uk/
home/cil-consultation.
County Councillor Jessica Fleming reported on a number of county-
wide initiatives. Suffolk has recently been awarded an additional
£1.4m from the Government’s Regional Growth Fund and can offer
grants of between £5,000 and £25,000 to small and medium-sized
enterprises (SMEs). To register contact Nataliya Klymko, na-
[email protected], 01603 510073 to apply before 31st
October 2014. Suffolk Energy Action has received funding to en-
able householders to make energy efficiency improvements such as
loft insulation, double pane windows and new boilers. The assis-
tance is usually in the form of a loan against future anticipated sav-
ings, though grants may be available as well. To find out more,
contact the scheme via the Suffolk Energy Action website or
call 0800 840 9090. Suffolk’s Fostering Service encourages people
to come forward to explore fostering, especially when it comes to
older children. For more information contact the Fostering Service
on 0800 328 2148 or visit www.suffolkfostering.com.
Finally, Charles and Lesley Greenhough of the parish magazine
were present to discuss the future of that publication. As you are
aware this issue is covering three months in a changed format, and
they have agreed to produce an October issue. If you are interested
in taking on the editorial responsibilities, PLEASE contact Charles
and Lesley.
Correspondence – The PC had received information about a Com-
munity Emergency Plan workshop which Cllr Mike Bishop is going
to attend. Other correspondence concerned the proposed Commu-
nity Infrastructure Levy consultation which the PC will discuss at
the July meeting, giving councillors time to read some pretty hefty
documents!
There were no planning applications to consider.
Finally, the PC discussed two issues, the parish magazine and the
proposed parish merger. The PC is concerned about the loss of the
magazine in general, of course, and more specifically that it will no
longer have a way to disseminate information if the magazine folds.
Options were discussed but it was agreed that nothing could be done
without a decision from the Parochial Church Council, which man-
ages the magazine, on how they plan to take it forward, if at all. The
magazine will be discussed again at the July meeting, where hope-
fully an answer will be forthcoming.
The subject of a parish merger will also be discussed further at the
July meeting. At present, there is no strong feeling either way about
the merger, which would result in a parish council area of over 1600
electors, about the size of Eye or Stradbroke. On the one hand, some
feel that the individuality of the respective communities should be
preserved. On the other hand, it is felt that Botesdale and Ricking-
hall are very much one community, with shared facilities and com-
mon problems. Which way would YOU vote?
Vicar Rides Again-A narrow escape The Reverend Douglas Johnston was not the best of driv-
ers. One Sunday he was driving home from church when
unfortunately, he had a minor bump with cyclist. The poor
man was knocked off his bike into the ditch. The Vicar
naturally stopped his car, got out and profusely apologised
and gave the cyclist his calling card saying that if he could
ever be of help, then the man should not hesitate to ask.
As the man rode home he looked at the card which said,
'The Reverend Douglas Johnston is sorry he missed you
today.'

late spring and nearly summer. He’s already been out with

up. Then there are the kids,
tearing about all day playing
football. And barbecues. And
dogs.

The June meeting was less well attended than usual with only the
councillors and two residents.
Jason Walker welcomed everyone, and, in particular, Richard Hilton
our newly co-opted member.
There was a lively discussion on the recent spate of road closures on
the B1113 and A143 which had been an apparently uncoordinated
shambles, presumably because they included both Suffolk and Nor-
folk. Redgrave was closed in both directions on the B1113 for a
time, such that only those knowing the byroads could get in or out.
The bus services were also cut. One resident’s mains water connec-
tion had to be rescheduled 3 times. County councillor Jessica Flem-
ing would take up the issue.
Verge cutting is only being done once per year resulting in unsafe
rural roads. This is a glaring example of how rural communities
suffer by funding being diverted to towns and cities. Norfolk ap-
pears to be far better than Suffolk at maintaining road verges.
Planning : Mid Suffolk has granted permission for the 9 windows at
Poppy Cottage.
The parish council had no objection to the Keys Cottage, ref
1149/14, 2 storey extension, but there was comment on the possible
need for more off road parking if the extension implied more resi-
dents.
Accounts : The accounts for year 2013/14 had been verified and
were agreed to go for audit.
The annual governance statement was approved and is recorded by
Minute 11.
Speeding : The request for a feasibility check on possible fixed
speed flashing indicators was sent to Suffolk County Council but
without any commitment at this stage. The speed monitoring statis-
tics had been received and would be available for the next meeting.

What to do with grass clippings is a frequently asked question at this time of year. Of course they can go in the brown recycling bin, but why
not put them to good use and gain the benefits yourself? Here are some ideas;
Put them on the compost heap. In small doses this is fine, but large amounts will decompose to a squidge because oxygen gets squeezed out,
and clippings are about 85% water. The good news about this is that they will significantly reduce in volume once dried. So, fork over the
heap regularly, mix the grass with other drier material, and if possible, add the grass over a period of time.
Clippings matt together quite well, so they make an effective mulch though not a pretty one. So use them in less obvious places, such as the
base of hedges, around fruit bushes etc. where they will help keep the soil moist and deter weeds.
Use them to make a hot bed. For spring or early summer use, clippings can be used to make a ‘hot bed’. Bury a small pile of clippings and
plant courgettes, marrows or pumpkins on top. The clippings will create heat whilst decomposing and encourage quick root growth.
Make a rootkiller for the compost heap. If you have a quantity of perennial roots, then I’m told you can mix with an equal quantity of grass
clippings and leave in a polythene bag or bin liner in a sunny spot for 4 weeks or so. The roots should have completely died, and the
contents can go on the compost heap.
Feed them to chickens. Not too much, but they love scrapping them around.
A word of warning, all the above are not recommended if weed or moss killer has been used on the grass.
To reduce the amount of clippings in the first place, switch your mower to mulch mode if fitted. This will enable your mower to cut the
grass clipping up much smaller, so that they fall to the ground and decompose very quickly. Then there’s no collected grass to deal with.
Mowers that can mulch are much more common now, so look for this feature if choosing a new machine.
Happy Gardening!

Parish Council Clerk : The paid parish clerk post had been adver-
tised and there has been interest. The next stage would be coordi-
nated by a group of three who would do any necessary interviews.
Other Matters : Following a discussion regarding allotments, Cllr
Richard Hilton would see if there was any interest for using the town
pit.
There is a lot of work at Gressingham Foods factory on the new road
layout and washing facilities. There had been no significant noise
problems recently.
There would be Redgrave bells project meeting with the Churches
Conservation Trust and David Ruffley at his Parliament office on
24th June.
It was agreed that if any of our charity grant recipients became part
of national bodies then the grants should be redeployed to charities
of local benefit.

RICKINGHALL PARISH COUNCIL’S
NEXT MEETINGS ARE ON
THURSDAY 3 JULY,
7 AUGUST (for planning only) &
4 SEPTEMBER
at 7.30 pm
AT RICKINGHALL VILLAGE HALL
All residents are very welcome www.rickinghall.onesuffolk.net
RICKINGHALL PARISH
COUNCIL
SURGERY
To be held at Rickinghall Farmers Market
on Saturday 12th July
Saturday 9th August and
Saturday 13th September—tbc
Residents of Rickinghall are invited to come along and speak to
their parish councillors about matters concerning the parish
Parish Councillors will be in attendance from
10.00 to 11.00 am only
The contributions of members of the public through the public
forum were probably the most significant current issues discussed at
the Rickinghall Parish Council Meeting held on Thursday June 5,
2014 in the small meeting room at the Rickinghall Village Hall.
Meetings are held on the first Thursday of every month, except
August, commencing at 7.30pm and members of the public are very
welcome to attend. There is an item on the agenda at each meeting
for contributions, questions, comments from members of the public.
There was great deal of discussion regarding the bottle bank at
Snape Hill. The isolated location of the site has given rise to fly
tipping and the cost of clearance was becoming unduly burdensome.
The Local Co-operative had been approached to see if they would
host the bottle bank there, but, disappointingly, they have declined.
After some discussion of other possibilities it was decided to
continue the discussion at the next meeting at which time, hopefully,
some other practical solutions might have presented themselves.
There had been complaints of unsociable parking with cars being
parked on the footway. In one case a car parked on the footway had
left insufficient room for a rider on a mobility scooter to get past the
car and they had to go out on to the road. It was noted that parking
on the footway which obstructed the footway was an offence and
offenders could be given a parking ticket by the police.
The Chairman reported back on a Mid-Suffolk District Council
Parish Liaison Meeting he had attended and provided some
interesting statistics, not least that the housing cost to income ratio
in the area was 7/1. This is considered quite high with London, a
very high cost area, being only slightly higher at 9.7/1. The high
cost of housing was becoming, if it was not already, a problem for
young families and working people. Added to this the demographics
of the area are such that by 2035 over 31% of the local population
will be in the ‘pensioner’ age bracket. Clearly local authorities
including the health system will need to undertake some significant
changes in order to accommodate these demographic trends.
One of the changes that will occur is the continued development of
the area. The Council cannot prevent development but can help
shape the changes so that development is sympathetic to the
traditions of the Parish and in keeping with the aims of the current
inhabitants. The pace of change is like to pick up soon and,
therefore, planning the development of the Parish is becoming more
urgent and important.
On more formal matters councillors responsibilities for various
matters such as the Parish Assets, Planning Working Party and
others were all appointed and will be reported in the telephone list
inserted in this magazine.

"How is it that you can't get a lawyer to defend you?" the
judge asked the prisoner.
"Well, your honour, it's like this. As soon as those lawyers
found out I didn't steal the money, they wouldn't have
anything to do with me."
