Are you in 4th grade or older and have received First Eucharist? If so, have you ever thought about becoming an ALTAR SERVER? You are invited to a training session on Monday, July 31, 6:30PM to learn more and find out if this important ministry is for you! All current servers are asked to attend this session as well, as Fr. Gerardo will share some updates to your responsibilities. The first Saturday of each month is a special day of devotion to the Blessed Mother associated with her apparitions at Fatima. Beginning August 5, and continuing on each 1st Saturday of the month, a Mass dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary will be celebrated at 8:00AM (English). Let us not forget that Our Mother Mary is the shortcut to get to God (St. Padre Pio) and the easiest and safest path to the Most Holy Trinity, being the daughter of God the Father, Mother of God the Son and Spouse of the Holy Spirit! Because of this Mass, First Friday Eucharistic Adoration: 24 Hours with the Lord will conclude with Benediction at 7:30AM. There is no change to the start of Adoration on Friday, August 4, which begins at 8:00AM in the Adoration Chapel for silent mediation until 6:00PM, when we move to the Church for a communal adoration service in Spanish until 10:00PM. Adoration then continues until 7:30AM Saturday morning, with each hour in the language, or silent, as the person who signed up for that hour decides. Drop-in adorers are welcome at any time! If you would like to commit to a set time of adoration, please contact: 8:00AM- 6:00PM: Agnes Skelly ([email protected], 713-366- 9014) or 10:00PM-7:30AM: Antonia Alvarez (948-0744). On Sunday, August 6, and every first Sunday of the month, the sacrament of Reconciliation is offered immediately after the 9:30AM Mass to 11:15 AM. Please support the local charitable causes of the Knights of Columbus by ordering some delicious tamales! Pre-order by adding your name to the list on the bulletin board, tamales will be available during Coffee Hour on Aug. 6th. Contact John Sowieja, Grand Knight, for more information (970-230 -1032). Any person or parish group that would like to help with the Parish Picnic & Volunteer Appreciation should attend a planning meeting on Monday, August 7 at 6:30PM in the Parish Hall. SHEPHERD’S CORNER Dear Family in Christ, Treasure sounds like something pirates possess; but each of us has treasure, too. Our treasure is not only cash, but includes personal property, real estate, stocks and many others valuables. And “treasure” should be understood to include one’s spiritual treasures, as well. At least, in material sense, compared to the rest of the world, I would say that Americans are rich. Sometimes people living in America don’t always

DEAR FATHER

SACRED HEART PARISH

Q: Is it a sin to purchase goods and services from a business that financially supports morally objectionable behavior?

A: This question requires us to back up a bit and ask two more fundamental questions: “What is sin?” and “To what degree am I allowed to participate in an objective evil?” A moral action has three necessary components: the object, the intention, and the circumstances. These are the what, the why, and the context. For something to be sinful, all three of these components must be taken into account. I must know what I am doing is sinful, I must fully intend it, and there must not be any mitigating circumstances that lessen my degree of culpability. Sin, in other words, requires knowledge that the action is sinful, the will to perform it, and circumstances that do not unduly inhibit my knowledge and freedom to act. To purchase goods and services from a business that supports morally objectionable behavior is sinful if we are conscious that the business supports such behavior, if we intend to purchase the product as a way of showing our support of this morally objectionable behavior, and if there are no mitigating circumstances inhibiting our knowledge and freedom of action. As a general rule, we should avoid purchasing goods and services from such businesses. We should not, for example, buy products from companies that fund grave objective moral evils such as embryonic stem research, contraception, abortion, assisted suicide, capital punishment, or euthanasia. Specific cases must also take into account the distinction between grave and less serious matters.

realize this, it is true. Even those who are immigrants and are working at the bottom rung of America’s socioeconomic ladder, yet thrilled to be in the United States, are able to send money back to their families remaining in their homeland. Yes, in America we are blessed. But God did not give us these blessings to stockpile; he gave them to us to share with others. That’s the nature of stewardship: sharing. Sharing everything we are, everything we have and everything we do, because God has shared everything to us, even his own intimacy and what he loves the most which is his only begotten Son. This kind of love is usually call: Providence. All of us know very well that Stewardship is not only about money (also includes your talents, your time, your gifts, your spirit, and your own person sharing with generosity) but we know that for a long time the Church has incorporated the collection of funds into worship. It is obvious that the ministry of money is critical for the health and growth of the body of Christ. Let me remind you that your financial contribution to your parish helps accomplish these: Frees priest for other tasks more closely related to their ordained, expands lay ministries and affords just wages, adds more and better ministries, apostolates, and adds professional services in the parish. The ministry of giving accomplishes so many good works on the local level, but since we are One Body in Christ, what we do in our local parish affects the Universal Church. To us as Catholics stewards, money, essentially, is a tool. Wealth can be a blessing, but money can complicate life, too. Take a few moments to reflect upon your own understanding of money. For where your treasure is, there will be your heart also. (Mt. 6:21)

There are several ministries next weekend where additional ministers are needed. Please contact the Parish Office is you are able to help. Thank you!

Jennifer Fulwiler is a popular writer and speaker from Austin, Texas, and frequently appears on Catholic radio and EWTN. In this eye-opening presentation, she explains how her original support for abortion was based on love (and lies). Through sound logic and scientific proof, Jennifer chronicles how she came to accept the truth about abortion.
