SUNDAY SCHOOL

MAR THOMA SUNDAY SCHOOL, DUBAI – AT JEBEL ALI CHURCHSunday School is closed for summer vacations and will reopen on Friday, 5th September 2014.

Bible quiz competition Written Bible quiz competition would be held for std 7 to std 12 after the summer holidays. The portion for the quiz is book of Daniel and Acts of the Apostles. The book of Philippians would not be part of the quiz portion as announced earlier in the Arts festival rules as this is not in line with our centre competitions. 75% of the questions would be from the two books given and 25% would be from church history.

Memory verse competition Parents are again reminded to encourage the children to prepare for the Memory verse competition that would be held post holidays. The Golden verses for this year is also uploaded in our church website under Sunday School & Arts festival section. Please download the same for the students. All students who are able to do the stipulated golden verse for their class would be awarded “Bible Champ Award”.

TRINITY SUNDAY SCHOOL – AT HOLY TRINITY CHURCHSunday School is closed for summer vacations and will reopen on Saturday, 6th September 2014.

Summer vacation

TSS encourages all its students to visit old age homes, orphanages or charity institutions during their holidays. It is an opportunity for our students to see and understand the existence of less privileged sections of society, appreciate all the blessings God has showered on us and think of different ways in which we can help enrich the lives of those who are in need. On their return from vacations, the children are also encouraged to share their experiences with others .

For further details contact Mr. Ashwin Abraham (Headmaster) 055 109 7421 or Mrs. Asha Jacob (Secretary) 050 450 8446.

From the Medical Desk… by Dr. Abey Abraham

TRAVELLERS DIARRHEA (TD)As many of us are set for travel in the coming weeks, I thought it will be useful to raise awareness about this condition which can occur very easily and can potentially spoil ones holidays.TD is defined as three or more unformed stools in 24 hours passed by a traveler, commonly accompanied by abdominal cramps, nausea, and bloating. Usually it is a minor problem and is caused by bacteria called E Coli. Sometimes high fever, more frequent diarrhea leading to tiredness and even blood in stools occur and these herald a more serious infection needing medical help. Other pathogens implicated are Shigella, Salmonella, Entamoeba, Giardia, Rotavirus and rarely Cholera. Children are usually affected by viruses (Rota virus) and antibiotic treatment is unhelpful. Death although reported, is very rare.

The primary source of infection is ingestion of fecally -contaminated food or water. TD usually resolves in 3 -5 days but sometimes may require hospitalization. Prevention of TD can be achieved by following some simple steps : Always be careful of what you eat and drink. The food should always be fresh and hot. Uncooked salads and roadside food stalls should be avoided. Fruits should be opened or peeled by you! Water should always be either boiled or bottled (see that it is opened in your presence!) Wash your hands always before touching food .

Antibiotics are not advised generally as preventive medicines because they can cause resistance. Vaccinations for specific agents (mentioned above) are being studied and as yet unavailable. Antidiarrheal medications like Loperamide may be used with caution to avoid stopping bowel movement completely resulting in constipation & delaying the expulsion of the causative bacteria from the intestine! Oral Rehydration (ORS) Sachets are important, easily available and help in rehydration & replacing depleted water and electrolytes like sodium, potassium & chloride in the body and maybe all that is required. Antibiotics like Ciprofloxacin (500mg twice daily for 5 days) or Norfloxacin are ideal when required.

PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE!! HAPPY TRAVELLING!!

We have introduced this as a regular coloumn for the benefit of our readers. This is a series of articles which will hopefully increase health awareness among our members and hopefully lead to a change in perspective and focus on better health practices. All suggestions are welcome.

To move, to breathe, to fly, to float, To gain all while you give, To roam the roads of lands remote: To travel is to live. - Hans Christian Anderson
