March 24th, 2019 - Third Sunday of Lent
From Fr. Suresh
TODAY’S READINGS First Reading: Exodus 3:1-8a, 13-15
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 103:1-2, 3-4, 6-7, 8, 11
Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 10:1-6, 10-12
Gospel: Luke 13:1-9
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION “Repent, says the Lord; the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” - Matthew 4:17
3RD SUNDAY OF LENT… A GENTLE NUDGE FOR MERCY There once was a person who had a fig tree planted in his orchard, and when he came in search of fruit on it [he] found
none." We live in a results-driven society. It can be easy to put pressure on ourselves to succeed. If we're not keeping
up with the perceived "good life" of those around us, we feel anxious and disappointed. Some of the Gospel stories
about fruitfulness can seem to play out in this fashion. "For three years now I have come in search of fruit on this fig
tree but have found none. So cut it down." The message seems to be clear. Abide in God and bear fruit! Stand apart
from God and be barren. But what happens when we're trying, but the growth we wanted doesn't seem to be coming
our way? What if it feels like life just isn't bearing fruit?
This Sunday, Jesus gives us a sign of hope. "[The gardener] said to him in reply, 'Sir, leave it for this year also ? it may
bear fruit in the future." How quick we can be to judge! Perhaps you started out Lent with high hopes and big ideas
for getting closer to God. Maybe things haven't gone exactly like you thought. It can be easy to lose patience with our
failures or slow growth. We shouldn't be too quick to assume that God has given up on us. He hasn't.
The same ideas apply to those around us. Perhaps we're the planter of the fig tree. We expect a certain amount of
growth from someone in our life, and they just aren't measuring up. Let today's Gospel be a gentle nudge for mercy.
As Lent continues to unfold, be patient with yourself and those around you. Wait for God to provide the growth.

PARISH NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
LENTEN PRAYER
O God, bless us during this season
of spiritual renewal. Fill our minds
and our hearts with love, that we
may be a sign of Jesus to all those
living in our midst. Amen.
LENT— GUIDELINES FOR FASTING AND ABSTINENCE
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are both days of fasting and abstinence. We are also obliged to observe abstinence
(but not fasting) on all Fridays during Lent. According to Canon Law, the law of fasting binds all Catholics from the
completion of their 18th birthday to the day after their 59th birthday.
The law of fasting allows only one full meal a day, but does not prohibit taking some food in the morning and eve-
ning, or the full meal may be taken in the evening instead of midday. The quantity of food taken at the two lighter
meals should not exceed the quantity at the full meal. The drinking of ordinary liquids does not break the fast.
The law of abstinence binds persons from the completion of their 14th year, so the law of abstinence applies to Catho-
lics from the day after their 14th birthday and onward throughout life.
The law of abstinence forbids the consumption of meat, but not of eggs, milk products or condiments made of animal
fat. Abstinence does NOT include meat juices and liquid foods made from meat. Thus, such foods as chicken broth,
consommé, soups cooked or flavored with meat, meat gravies or sauces, as well as seasonings or condiments made
from animal fat are NOT forbidden. So it is permissible to use margarine and lard. Even bacon drippings which con-
tain little bits of meat may be poured over lettuce as seasoning.
For further information see sections 1250-1253 of Canon Law.

PARISH NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
NEW MULTI-PURPOSE SPORTS HALL
Building and Growing Together for Our Future!
Plans are well underway for this spectacular
new addition for our School and Parish, with
the goal to have it open by September 2020,
the 50th anniversary year of our school! The
two-storey facility will provide the school with
over 23,000 square feet of much-needed added
space. It will feature a large basketball court,
which can be used for other activities such as
netball, volleyball, badminton, discos and
gymnastics. The building will also add ten
classrooms, one of which will be utilized for
drama classes. Other features include new changing rooms, a concession stand, PE and security offices, and separate
bathrooms for adults, staff and children. A large cistern will be included, so that water in the building can be recycled.
It will also have an elevator, providing easy access to the second floor for persons who have special needs. MJM has
also designed the facility to serve as a hurricane shelter. The exterior of the building will feature a covered drop-off
lane, landscaping, and more than twenty additional parking spaces.
Any individuals, families, or corporations who wish to support this project may contact the St. Ignatius School or
Church offices for further information and to obtain a donor packet. We are accepting one-time donations, or
monthly payments over the next 18 months. The lobby of the new building will feature a spectacular donor tree,
so that all of the top contributors to the project will be on permanent display. Thank you for your support!

PARISH NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
ST. IGNATIUS/DOROTHY RICE SCHOLARSHIP FUND —
NOW IN OUR 22ND YEAR ASSISTING FAMILIES WITH SCHOOL TUITION!
The St. Ignatius/Dorothy Rice Memorial Scholarship Fund assists families who are not able to
afford the full tuition at St. Ignatius School (which averages about $9500 per year). Each year
we help to keep children in our school who otherwise couldn’t afford a Catholic Education.
Over the past 21 years we have assisted nearly 180 children from over 120 families!
The average child in this programme receives about $200-$300 per month off the fees, paid by
the scholarship fund (directly to the school bursar), while the child’s family pays the rest.
In return for the help, the families actively contribute to the school and parish in a variety of ways (helping out with
fundraisers, chaperoning school trips, cleaning the grounds, assisting at sports days, serving on committees, etc.).
How you can help:
Donation envelopes are available at the front entrance of St. Ignatius Church or in the church office. Donations can
be dropped in the collection, sent in by mail or dropped off at the church office. If paying by cheque, please make
your donations payable to: ST. IGNATIUS, and in the memo, please indicate “Scholarship Fund”.
On-line transfers can be done through Butterfield Bank… contact May in the parish office for details.
Perhaps your company would like to assist with regular contributions OR a one-off donation?
Please consider the Scholarship Fund from time to time when doing your charitable work throughout the year!
Many thanks to all those who have contributed to the fund during recent months and during the past several years!
For further information, please contact Jeremy Rice in the Parish Office or via e-mail: [email protected].
