BEFORE PARISTECH, INDIVIDUAL “GRANDES ECOLES” IN PARIS
Several prestigious French “Grandes écoles” of Paris were founded in the 18th century
They recruit students following a highly selective process according to academic records, therefore each promotion has a limited number of students (300 on average per promotion)
The students are trained for top positions in Industry, Research and Management, mainly at the national level

In the 1990s, 9 schools were federated into an Association, ParisTech, and started developing inter-school activities in a limited range
In 2007, ParisTech became a Public Institute for Scientific Cooperation with 10 schools
The PRES/EPCS status awarded by the government to ParisTech in 2007 allowed to award ParisTech degrees and to get its own budget
A permanent core structure (20 people) proposes and implements initiatives adopted by the Board of Governors and delegated by member schools
