1.Welcome to the Careers Convention 2015
Welcome to the Lady Manners School Careers Convention and Skills Fair! This event is an exciting and inspirational event where all students, parents and carers can explore the world of work and the many different pathways to get there. A number of prominent universities, colleges, companies and other organisations to represent as broad a range of careers as possible. We thank them all for their interest and participation.
How is the convention organised?
There are a range of careers talks for students and parents to attend and find out more about specific careers. These are held at different stages of the evening.
There are a number of delegate stands across school for students and parents to consult -employers, universities, colleges and organisations who can offer voluntary work opportunities.
MAKE USE OF THE INFORMATION IN THIS BOOKLET TO PLAN YOUR JOURNEY! Who is the convention aimed at? Year 8 Students and their parents – you will benefit from the experience of being in a careers focused environment, with the opportunity to explore many different careers paths that may inspire you to think about your dream job, You will be able to identify with the subjects you are currently studying and recognise the connection with jobs and careers in the real world. Year 9 Students and their parents – this event will give you a head start in decision making ahead of choosing your GCSE subjects .Ask employers, colleges and universities about subjects that you should be taking for GCSE. Year 10 & 11 Students and their Parents –Will you stay at school to do A levels after year 11, go to college or apply for an apprenticeship? What qualifications are needed for that dream job? Will you need to go to university? This is a great chance to explore all of these options under one roof. Why not use this opportunity to impress local employers and talk about potential work experience placements? You can find out more by finding out which universities, colleges and apprenticeships which offer courses in subjects or careers that you are interested in and getting more information about them. Some of the companies present may be able to offer work experience placements. Year 12 and 13 students Year 12 students will soon be thinking about university options .What work experience will I need? Are there any volunteering opportunities which may help my application? What are the alternatives to higher education? Perhaps an apprenticeship?, taking a GAP Year, a Year in Industry? Are there any sponsorship on offer in a career area that you are interested in? Do the universities offer any bursaries? Is an apprenticeship a viable option? Some of the training providers have taken 6th forms students in the past. Year 13 students may still be considering GAP year opportunities, further work experience or voluntary work or considering advanced/higher apprenticeships? You may still have questions about

2.CAREERS INFORMATION TALKS
A series of information talks run throughout the evening. All information talks are aimed at students of
all year groups and their parents.
What do I need to do to attend a talk? Just turn up at the correct time!
All talks last approximately 40 minutes. Please arrive on time and leave promptly. I have asked Speakers to build in time for questions.
What if there are no seats available at the venue? Some venues are smaller than others.
If you find all seats are taken, you are welcome to stand and listen to the talk if there are no spare chairs available.
Can I attend more than 1 talk? Yes. You will able to attend up to 3 talks if you so wish.
Will I be able to contact speakers after the event? I have published speakers e-mail addresses and you will be able to contact them if you have any
follow up questions. Some speakers will also be available in the main convention locations as part of a university or college team or at a separate table.

Use theses to plan your contacts Courses have been categorised into subject areas many of which you will recognise from the school subjects that you are taking or the career area that you are considering. Full Time Courses and Apprenticeships at a Further Education College Students start studying at a College at any time after Year 11. If you start a course before you are 19, then the course is free. Courses are offered at all Levels and the level you start at will depend on the qualifications that you achieve at the end of Year 11 or Year 12 or Year 13. The colleges also offer Apprenticeship opportunities in many of their course areas. The Colleges that are represented this evening are; Chesterfield College The college has two main sites on Infirmary Road and at Tapton House. The College provides a wide range of foundation courses, A Levels, Apprenticeships and Vocational (work related) qualifications. The college, in partnership with Stagecoach, operate a large network of bus routes to bring students to college. Students will have to apply for a bus pass. The college also offer a number of Higher Education courses (see section on Higher Education). The college is affiliated to Learning Unlimited, an organisation that offers apprenticeship opportunities (see the section on apprenticeships for more details). Buxton & Leek College Buxton and Leek College is based on two main campuses at the Dome in Buxton and in Leek. There is college transport between the 2 sites The College offers Vocational/Job related courses, A Levels (at Leek) and apprenticeships and has strong links with the full range of Higher Education course at the University of Derby. Sheffield College The College is made up of four campuses across Sheffield. These are Sheffield City College, Hillsborough College, Peaks College and Olive Grove Engineering Centre. The College offers Vocational/Job related courses, A Levels and Apprenticeships and Higher Education Courses. A subsidised bus pass is available to help with travel costs. Derby College-Broomfield Site Broomfield Hall is situated four miles North East of Derby. It offers a wide range of courses connected to farming, horticulture, floristry and all kinds of allied rural activities- including animal management and equine studies.
