NAMING THE ROOMS OF A HOUSE
OBJECTIVESNaming the rooms of a houseDescribing the location of the rooms within the house
VOCABULARY
MATERIALS
* Draw a large outline of a three level house on the board, and place the picture of "la cocina", "el comedor" and "el salón" on various levels. Say, for example, "La cocina está en el primer piso." Introduce the remaining rooms, "el baño", "el vestíbulo" and "la habitación." Have students place these room pictures elsewhere in the house drawing. After each picture is placed, model a sentence in Spanish, such as, "Mira, el baño está en el tercer piso." When all pictures are in place, ask questions of the class, such as, "¿Dónde está el baño / la cocina / la sala?"* Use Activity Sheets.
* Ask students to predict what will happen next.
POST-VIEWING ACTIVITIES* Place pictures of the kitchen, dining room and living room on the board (magnetic tape helps.) Review the words in Spanish.
* Point to the house, or a picture of a house, and say, for example, "Esta es mi casa." Display the "room" pictures, and pronounce them in Spanish. Ask class to repeat.
VIEWING ACTIVITIES* Show the video. Tell students that they are going to see the inside of Sylvia's house ("el palacio"). The entire scene is a song about the Sylvia replicas, and what they are doing in various rooms of "al palacio." Ask students to listen for the following words: "cocina", "entrada" and "ducha."
Pictures of the rooms listed in VocabularyActivity Masters/Sheets 34a, 34b and 34c.

* The names of some rooms vary in Spanish, according to country. The word for "bedroom" can be "habitación" or "dormitorio."
ADDITIONAL SUGGESTIONS* Other useful rooms to know are "el garaje" and "el ático."
CULTURAL NOTE
POST-VIEWING ACTIVITIES (ctd)* Use MUZZY Vocabulary Builder: House and Home.
* "Shoebox Room Project." This works well in conjunction with MUZZY Online Level I - Unit 5 - Vocabulary - House and Home. Ask students to bring in shoeboxes. Working individually, or in groups of two, students decide on a room for their shoebox. They then "furnish" it by drawing windows, curtains, etc. with markers, or creating furniture out of cardboard. The art teacher may be able to help with this project. These rooms, when finished, can be stacked to make a kind of "block" which can then be described in Spanish.

* For fourth grade and up, it is usually better to have small same sex teams taking turns. Once the students master this game, the teacher converts it from a palace to the school the students attend. Teachers' names take the place of MUZZY characters. Use "Señor", "Señora", or "Señorita" in the titles.* Write out "el primer piso, el segundo piso, el tercer piso" etc.
* Have students guess where each character is by making statements like:* " Muzzy está en el primer piso de la izquierda." " La Reina está en la planta baja del centro.."* The teacher reveals what is under the card. The class responds "Correcto" or "Incorrecto". If the student is correct, s/he gets another turn. If not, it goes to another.
* Now there are three empty middle columns.
* Make index cards with names of all the MUZZY characters. Make enough other cards with objects ("el gato, las plantas, las flores, las frutas, la computadora, la moto, el bolso, etc.) to fill in any empty spots in the twelve remaining empty spots. Put Corvax card somewhere on the highest floor as in the video.* Cover all index cards of characters and objects with another index card.
* Below there will be four rows and five or six columns:
Index Card Lables for the left column:la planta bajael primer pisoel segundo pisoel tercer piso
Index Card Labels for the right column:first floorsecond floorthird floorfourth floor
ENRICHMENT PROJECT
* Turn an extra large pocket chart into "el palacio de Gondoland." Make a label for the top of the pocket chart.
