PARENTAL WEEKLY UPDATE – 16th March 2017 (available on our website)
Dear Parents and Carers
You will be aware that school funding has received a large amount of press exposure recently. Every school in the
country is feeling the pinch and the Perfect Storm that has been brewing for many years is reaching its peak. KTS is
no different to other schools in having to manage an ever reducing budget. I work closely with all the other
headteachers in North Herts to look at ways that we can be more efficient and reduce costs and increase revenue. I
am therefore very grateful to parents who contribute to the running of the school through contributions to The
Friends of Knights Templar parent body. I have sent a joint letter from the other school secondary schools in Letch-
worth to Sir Oliver Heald and the Secretary of State for Education. The schools in Hitchin have done the same, as
have all secondary schools in Hertfordshire. It is important to keep you informed of the impact of our reducing
budget on your child and their education, so I will work closely with our governors to share information over the
next few months. Please do be assured that we have a brilliant finance department and business manager and we
work closely together to minimise impact on the education of the students.
You will have received an email from Mrs Sue Welch, chair of the governing body and I earlier in the week, asking
for some feedback on the school. I am meeting with the governors to review our vision for the school and our de-
velopment over the next few years. I would really appreciate your feedback on the following two questions:
1. What is important about the school to you? 2. What should the school be like in 5 years’ time
These are very open questions, so please do send your responses to [email protected] by Monday 20th March. You will recall that we lost all our chickens recently (please see press release below). We are looking for a new team to buy, run and develop the small business that Luke Mills (Year 12) so successfully ran for many years. If you feel that your son or daughter would like to be involved, please do let me know by emailing Fiona Roper ([email protected]). I am looking for a student to take the lead as well, so there will be a role for all to play. I am looking forward to meeting with all our year 10 parents next week (Wednesday 22nd March) at the final Par-
ents’ Information Evening of the year. Students should attend in full school uniform.
Kind Regards,
Tim Litchfield

PE News:
Year 7 netball update On Tuesday 14th March, the year 7 netball team took part in the North Herts District Tournament at Marriotts School, Stevenage. In a tough first game, the girls unfortunately lost against Nobel, followed by another close game against Hitchin Girls. Despite this rough start, the girls fought back and won their next game against Barnwell 3-2. Another unlucky defeat against St Francis came next but undeterred by this, the girls battled to a convincing 4-0 win in their next game against St Chris! Although not making it through to the next round, Miss Olden, Katie Allerton and I would like to congratulate the girls on some excellent play and team spirit- we look forward to improving on this at training! Well done to every-one who played! Team: Amy Gonis, Elouise Worcester, Ella Holm, Berri Clarke, Jessica Ashley, Jacey Rice, Kira Dhesi and Shakirah Rashid. Written by Assistant Coach Rosie Muge (year 12)
Year 8 netball news Last week, the year 8 girls’ netball team competed in the North Herts District Tournament.
The girls demonstrated high levels of effort and intensity throughout the tournament and won 2 of their group games. However, a couple of losses later in the tournament meant that the girls were unable to accumulate enough points to qualify for the knockout rounds. Despite this initial disappointment, it was incredibly positive to see the girls improve so much within each game of the tournament and play with such tenacity and competitive-ness. We look forward to seeing improvements made in training this year and next.
Well done to all of the girls involved. Year 8 District 5 a-side Last night the year 8 boys’ football team travelled to Marriotts School in Stevenage for the North Herts District 5 a-side competition. KTS took 2 teams to this competition and both groups of boys performed brilliantly through-out the tournament, demonstrating excellent skill, passing and movement in very fast paced and intense games.
Although one of the KTS teams were unable to qualify for the knock out rounds of the competition, the other group of KTS representatives made it all the way to the final. KTS faced John Henry Newman in a fiercely contested final but were beaten by a piece of individual brilliance which resulted in a well-taken goal for the opposition. Sadly, this goal was enough to clinch the victory for the Stevenage School but the year 8 boys can be pleased with their excel-lent effort throughout the tournament and their place as runners-up in the District.
Year 9 hockey update Last week, the year 9 hockey team faced St Francis School in a very competitive County Cup clash. As ever, the girls played with real passion and intensity and matched their Independent School opponents in all areas of the pitch. KTS eventually managed to get their noses in front with a well worked goal and held on to their slender advantage for a crucial 1-0 win! After the game, Miss Olden was quoted as saying ‘I couldn’t be prouder of the girls’ perfor-mance on the night’. This really does sum up just how well KTS played in terms of their skill level and willingness to work hard for each other as a team! Well done to all involved!
Year 10 Hockey On Wednesday the Year 10 Hockey Squad (featuring girls and boys!) had a friendly against Hitchin Girls School. Thanks to a clinical (and not lucky at all!) finish from Charlotte Phillips, the game finished 1-0 to KTS and it was an exhibition of some wonderful free-flowing hockey. Player of the match was voted as Connor Robin-son, who, along with Peter Iliev and Joe Warren, have been the pioneers of boys hockey at KTS. Big credit as well to Niamh Wase who volunteered to defect to HGS when they were short a player.
Saracens v Harlequins @ Wembley The PE Department are pleased to be able to offer KTS families the chance to buy tickets for Wembley on 8th April. Saracens will host Harlequins at the national stadium in a high profile clash which will include all the England stars from both clubs. Sarries will put on a great spectacle at Wembley and Louisa Johnson (from X-Factor) will be per-forming pre-match. For further details have a look on Saracens website www.saracens.com If you are interested please complete and return the letter on the school website, making your payment via Wisepay. Age no barrier as Staff show the way with Fitness Club As we move into spring and then summer many of the staff are taking care of their own well-being and fitness, with an eye on the beach this summer. Mr Matthews and Mr Raymen have been delivering a staff fitness club on Friday afternoons in the sports hall. Thus far this has been very well attended by a range of staff from a range of departments. The staff see this session as a chance to unwind and finish the week on a high whilst maintaining a good level of physical fitness. Mr Matthews and Mr Raymen, through personal experience, understand the profound personal benefit from exercising and have the aim to share this with as many staff at KTS as possible. So far the staff have completed a spinning class and two circuit sessions, with as many as 15 staff attending.
So here is the challenge…..If your staff can do it…. So can you! So get active and get involved in all the amazing
sporting opportunities offered by the PE department here at KTS. There really is no excuse…. Just remember the
hardest part of exercising is getting started……. the rest is easy!

Year 10 Mock Exams
Please note that the Year 10 Mock timetable is now on the website.
Individual timetables will be sent out via intouch in the next couple of days.
Year 10 Parents’ Evening—Reminder
The Year 10 Parents’ Evening will be taking place on Wednesday 22nd March. The booking system is now open and
can be accessed on the website.
EST dig and plant 50 tree whips in a nursery area.
These trees will be nurtured in school and in about three years time will be planted out into the community.
This is the second time we have joined this project to plant more trees around the country. We worked with
Friends of Baldock Green Spaces in the spring and planted out our first batch of trees at Ivel Springs last April.
Thanks to the help of Jason Harley, Callum Medland, Jack, Chloe and Mrs Connolly and Miss Staines.
Spring Music Concert Thank you to everyone who came along to Tuesday’s Spring Concert; It was lovely to have a full house and the audi-ence were rewarded with a fantastic evening of music.
Congratulations to all the students who took part, you were a credit to the Music Department and the School.
The collection raised £598.00 which will be used to support our extra-curricular groups and ensembles. Food Technology We would like to congratulate Year 11 food student Remy Sharman who has completed a stunning final product for her GCSE controlled assessment in Food Technology. A ‘gluten free, deconstructed tropical mini trifle’ Mrs Sharman uploaded a photo of it on her social media accounts and is a member of a ‘Free From Gluten’ Group. The photo had over 480 likes. From this, Mrs Sharman was contacted by the head of Graduate & Apprenticeship Schemes at Marks & Spencer. She said she loved Remy’s amazing creation and talent. She asked if Remy would be interested in joining them as she enters Year 13 (post completion of college) as a Food Product Developer and in the meantime has offered her work experience opportunities.
Remy has applied for a Catering course at Hitchin College and has her interview this week. We wish her the best of luck!

Year 8 - Work shadowing day. Please return completed forms to student services by Thursday 23rd March. The aim of the day is to enable all year 8 students to be given the opportunity to shadow their parent/guardian or another close relative at work to enable them to see what happens in the workplace on a regular day. We ask that you please discuss with your child who they might be able to shadow and make a decision with them as to which opportunity would be most beneficial for them. We then ask that you approach your employer to obtain permis-sion before completing both the Parental Consent and Placement Agreement forms. We do appreciate that this could be a challenging request. Please ask your son / daughter to discuss any issues with their form tutor. Students have been given regular information with regard to this day over the past few weeks. We look forward to working with you on the Work Shadowing Project which we are sure will be a rewarding and valuable experience for your child. In the meantime, should you have any queries, please do not hesitate to con-tact us.
Yours sincerely

North Herts Librarian Book Review & Author Visit
On the 15th March 12 pupils from Y7-9 attended the North Herts Librarian Author event, hosted this year at St. Christopher School, Letchworth. Our pupils have been reading and reviewing six publications, selected by North Herts School Librarians. The day offered an opportunity to discuss the titles with representatives from other schools, and ended with pupils voting for their favourite book. The winner of our younger category was ‘Jessica’s Ghost’ by Andrew Norriss, and in our older category ‘Girl on a Plane’ by Miriam Moss. Both books were clear winners and we would highly recommend them to anyone looking for good quality YA books to inspire reluctant readers.
Winner of the younger reader category Winner of the older reader category The day concluded with an inspiring lecture by Kim Slater, author of last year’s winning title ‘Smart’. Kim inspired potential writers, and told the students that whatever they hoped for in the future, it can be achieved - with hard work, faith in your ability and determination.
Year 7 BCG Vaccine All eligible year 7 pupils are offered the BCG vaccine which is to protect against tuberculosis (TB). There was a change to the National BCG Vaccination Programme in 2005 when it was decided that the vaccine would only be offered to only those within a certain criteria. The vaccine is now targeted at those children who are at a higher risk of developing TB, and the incidence in Hertfordshire is low. Only return the consent form if you come into any of these categories:
You, your spouse/partner, your child or your child’s grandparents were born in a country outside the UK or Western Europe
Your child has never received a BCG vaccination and has arrived recently (in the last 10 years) from a country where TB is more common
Your child has never received a BCG vaccination and has lived for a period of three months or longer in a country outside the UK or Western Europe
Anyone in your family or household has been treated for TB in the past 5 years
The consent forms need to be returned to me by Easter please. Students can return them to my RED Drop Box, which is outside the Medical Room. If you haven’t had the form and can access a printer, please copy the form from our website. If you are unable to copy and return the form do let me know. I will send forms to those who I know do not have this facility.

Bronze DofE Visit to Letchworth and Baldock Food BankOn the 10th of March I visited The Letchworth and Baldock food bank depot with Logan Sibley, Lorimer Jenkins and James Naufal-Power. We met Paddy, Ursula and the other volunteers. We went to find out more about food bank and what they do there. They showed us around and we got to ask questions. They organise food donated by schools, churches and companies such as Tesco. The volunteers weigh the food and organise food into boxes accord-ing to the expiration date. They put together nutritionally balanced food in bags, which lasts for 3 days. So it’s ready to be delivered and given to cli-ents. But they also give out items for babies, hygiene items and pet food. I thought the food bank was very well organised and everyone was really friendly. They have to pay a lot of money for the rent, which we found surprising. For our Duke of Edinburgh volun-teering section, we are going to be working out ways to help the food bank. Meet your new Head Boy and Head Girl
We are very pleased to introduce Matthew Inman and Emma
Cole as our new Head Boy and Head Girl team for the academ-
ic year 2017/18.
Despite a very competitive and talented field of applicants,
both Emma and Matthew really stood out throughout the
presentations and in particular, the interview process.
We look forward to seeing these two very talented individuals
lead our Senior Prefect Team with excellent organisational
skills and innovative ideas, to continually improve our school
and sixth form community.
We would also like to congratulate all of the applicants who
applied for this coveted position. This year’s field of applicants
was particular strong and we hope that the process has been
a beneficial one for all involved.
Senior football update
What a season it has been so far for the senior boys’ football team!
On Wednesday 8th March, the KTS boys hosted the highly talented and respected Parmiters
School (Watford) in the semi-final of the County Cup.
The boys were energised by the occasion and came out firing, with Elliot Powell scoring an
excellent goal from a well worked corner in the opening 10 minutes of the game.
The goal seemed to wake-up the school from Watford who then put the KTS defence under a lot of pressure for the
next 10-15 minutes. However, the KTS boys stood up to the task and repelled wave after wave of attacks with a
physical and robust defensive display from Marcus Crowther, Jamie Allen and Owen Marvell.
The rest of the 1st half saw both teams have their chances- Parmiters created a number of opportunities from well
worked build-up play, while KTS used their pace and athleticism to cause their opponents serious problems on the
counter-attack.
At half-time the score-line remained 1-0 to KTS.
The 2nd half was a very different affair all together! KTS continued to demonstrate their physical superiority and
withstood the intense pressure applied by the Parmiters attacking players but this time, the counter-attack that
looked so dangerous in the 1st half finally paid off for the KTS boys!
In an enthralling 15-minute period of the match, KTS scored 3 goals from electric counter-attacking play to kill the
game off.
The large crowd of students in attendance cheered the boys home to victory and a final goal 10 minutes from full-
time helped the KTS boys secure their place in the County Final with a very impressive 5-0 win!
We would like to congratulate the boys on this epic performance and wish them good luck for their County Final
and the North Herts District Final, for which they qualified last week.
Details of the 2 finals are shown below:
It would be great to see lots of staff, students, parents and friends of the school in attendance at these 2 finals to
support the boys.
Senior basketball update
The senior basketball team, like all of our senior sports teams, have
had a very impressive season and the last couple of weeks have
provided some incredibly crucial and exciting fixtures for the school
to enjoy. The first of two big challenges for the KTS boys took place
last Monday when we hosted Highfield School in the North Herts
District Final.
After last year’s disappointing defeat in the final, the KTS boys were
eager to set the record straight and secure the District title against
their local rivals. From the very start of the game, it was clear that
this was going to be a very closely fought contest.
The KTS boys managed to take the lead relatively early on in the game and while they appeared comfortable in
maintaining the lead, Highfield proved to be a very tenacious team and refused to let the KTS lead grow to a com-
fortable margin.
Despite the attacking exploits of Jim Acquaah, Elliot Powell, Joe Croker and Ibukunoluwa Odumade, KTS were una-
ble to extend their lead beyond the single digit mark and as the game wore on, the atmosphere became more and
more tense.
The last quarter of play had it all- ferocious defence, strong attacking inside play, precision 3-point shooting and
even a bit of controversy with the match officials! However, we are very pleased to say that the KTS boys held firm
and maintained a slender 3-point lead at the final buzzer to ensure that the North Herts District Championship re-
turned to Baldock!
Event North Herts District Final County Cup Final
Date Tuesday 21st March Thursday 30th March
Fixture KTS vs. John Henry Newman KTS vs. Dame Alice Owens
Time/ Location 4pm KO at The Knights Templar School (astro) 7pm KO at The County Ground, Letchworth
Unfortunately, on this occasion the boys were unable to clinch the win and missed out on securing their place in
the County Final by an agonising 3-point loss.
After an energy sapping encounter on Monday, all attentions then turned to the County Cup semi-final clash with
Sandringham School on Friday.
Once again, the boys performed brilliantly and showed their experience to effectively deal with the tense, big-
match atmosphere.
Despite the disappointment, the boys must be commended on another wonderful demonstration of skill, athleti-
cism and commitment in very intense circumstances. At the end of the game, KTS Head Coach Mr White was quot-
ed as saying ‘….I am incredibly proud of the boys. That is by far the best game of basketball I have been involved
with in my many years experience of the sport.’
We would like to congratulate the senior basketball team on yet another very successful season and in addition, we
would like to thank Mr White and Mr Chantrell for the time, effort and expertise that they have invested in our sen-
ior basketball squad. Well done to all involved!
Senior rugby update
On a glorious spring afternoon, Mr Matthews and Mr Smith travelled to Bishops Stortford with a young and enthu-siastic KTS Senior Rugby XV ready to take on Birchwood School in the County Cup semi-final. Following two weeks of intense preparation, the team were quietly confident of causing an upset.
The team had a tough start to the game and were trapped inside their own 22 and under severe pressure at the set
piece, thanks to three powerful opposition front rowers. The KTS front row of Tom Baxter, Adam Orton and Joss
King were not intimidated and stood firm under the onslaught, knowing that with time, their opponents would
begin to tire and this proved to be the case.
Following a magnificent goal line stand, KTS were able to clear their lines and started to threaten the Birchwood 22.
Josh Parkhouse at 10 was thriving from some quick ball and sharp delivery from scrum half Matthew Inman. How-
ever, KTS were still struggling to come to terms with the power and pace of the Birchwood players. In the end, the
pressure told and Birchwood scored two good tries before half time, failing to covert both efforts.
In the huddle Mr Matthews and Mr Smith refocused the team and with the slope and breeze in the favour of KTS,
the boys were confident of getting back on terms in the 2nd half- this proved the case. The forwards began to get
some real ‘go forward’, attacking wider from the ruck and with front foot ball Josh Parkhouse was able to carve
open the defence at will. Our first try was a blistering attack up the middle of the pitch with forwards and backs
combining well and the move was rounded off by the team captain and talisman, Danny Burns. With the kick this
made the score 10-7, GAME ON!
The KTS boys continued to press and search for another score, however the Birchwood 10 and 12 showed their
class and experience and cut us open for a well taken try down the left wing. Bill Bowkett bravely attempted to stop
the play but came up short. However, with the conversion again going wide, all was not lost.
The KTS lads went back on the attack and threw everything they had at Birchwood. Arandeep Bisla was everywhere
on the pitch having come off the bench to great effect akin to one of Eddie Jones’ England finishers. With the clock
running down, Man of the Match Josh Parkhouse took the ball to the line, showed it to Anil Sidhu and swept
through the defence to score at the posts. He added the extras taking the score to 17-14.
With time running out Birchwood regained possession and kicked the ball dead to deservedly win the game. All the
KTS squad can be proud of their efforts and when considering that much of this team are only year 11, the future
looks bright. There is no reason this group of players should not go on to win the county cup over the next two sea-
sons. Congratulations to those year 13 boys playing their final game for KTS, namely; James Cook, Joe Croker, Dan-
ny Burns, Adam Orton, Bill Bowkett and Tom Baxter.
Another thank you to Danny Burns who has been an excellent captain throughout the season.

New Gold Award holders
Congratulations also to the following Year 13 students who have now achieved their Gold Award: Sophie Fairburn Annie Ferrari Bethany Mance Thomas Smith
Annie’s choice of activity for her Skills section was a really good example of how DofE can support career aspira-tions and add value to university applications. ‘For 12 months, my chosen skill was to learn more about the care of cats at a shelter/cattery in Stevenage. As well as providing a skills section for my Gold DofE, it was also a valuable addition to my university application for veteri-nary medicine. From this experience, I have developed my team working and communication skills. I frequently gave updates on the cats. I also gained confidence into the treatment of cats with severe illness such as Feline Im-munodeficiency virus. I also became more adaptable to the cats and their individual needs. The most interesting and rewarding aspect of my role was returning each week and observing the stray cats become domesticated and more confident around people.’ Annie Ferrari
The Big Sixth Form Quiz
Tonight, ‘The Big Sixth Form Quiz’ is back!
Approximately 70+ students will return to the sixth form common room for a
prompt 7pm start this evening as the teams will pit their wits against one an-
other in a battle of general knowledge to claim the title of Biq Quiz Champi-
ons!
We look forward to an entertaining and enjoyable evening for all, led by the enigmatic Dr Hadley as ‘quizmaster’!
