CIS Community News

The first “TED talks” event in Cay-man occurred yesterday at Harquail Theater, entitled Tedx Seven Mile Beach. The speeches will be seen round the world as these talks are posted through the TED network.

Our own Ms. Lisa was selected as a speaker for the event, and her per-formance yesterday was outstand-ing!! Her speech centered around the idea that children’s lives are transformed through the process of engaging in powerful literature cir-cles. When the video is posted, we will share the link.

Congratulations to Ms. Lisa for this great accomplishment and for repre-senting CIS at TEDx SMB!

Our IB learner profile characteristic for this month is ‘knowledgeable’. “IB students explore concepts, ideas and issues that have local and global sig-nificance. In so doing, they acquire in-depth knowledge and develop un-derstanding across a broad and balanced range of disciplines.” As an IB World School CIS is constantly encouraging and pushing students to in-crease their knowledge base; teaching them that knowledge is not an end in itself, but a tool which can enable them to continue growing and impact-ing the world around them. CIS students are able to apply their knowledge to a variety of situations and problems, which stands them in good stead for continuing on to their future studies and being valued members of their communities. From our youngest to our oldest students, CIS fosters a love of learning and knowledge, and encourages our students to apply their knowledge to improving their community and advancing their educational career. We provide them with the foundation to act wisely and the motiva-tion to act diligently: “Without knowledge action is useless, and knowledge without action is futile.” Abu Bakr

This year CIS is piloting an after school activity program (Grades 3-5) called Desti-nation Imagina-tion (DI). The pro-gram fosters crea-tive problem-solving, requires divergent and critical thinking, promotes risk-taking, and devel-ops teamwork. Three teams of students will trav-el to the Tennes-see in May for the DI Global Finals where they will represent the CIS and compete with teams from all around the world.

Please support the DI teams in their fund raising efforts by attend-ing the Premier of Rio2!

BIRTHDAY BOOKS FOR THE LIBRARY !

Thank you for your contributions!

Changing Diet &

Exercise for Kids

Good nutrition and getting

plenty of exercise are essential for

strong growth and health develop-

ment. Today, approximately 40 million of

our children worldwide are overweight, and

22% of Cayman’s school children are over-

weight. Children ages 6-17 are recommended to get

60 minutes of exercise per day. Here are a few benefits

of good nutrition and daily exercise:

Better academic performance

Improved coping strategies and emotional regulation

Higher self-esteem and lower anxiety

Protection from illness and reduces the risk of eating disor-

ders, cavities, malnutrition and iron deficiencies.

Parents are critical to establishing healthy behaviors in your kids

because you are a role model. You control the types of food your

children have access to in your home and can monitor diet, exer-

cise, and media consumption. Your behaviors can model healthy

attitudes toward food and exercise.

Statistics reported by World Health Organization (WHO) and Cayman Health

Minister.

Welcome New Student April Fools!!

Happy Birthday Dr. Jeremy!

Good Sports

CIS had a full week of volleyball! On Monday CIS1 took on Academy again. Unfortunately, the third time was not the charm as they beat CIS1 both sets with a score of 18-25 and 14-25. The team came back after a tough loss and was ready to play on Thursday with determination and enthusiasm as we took on St. Ignatius for the first time-and what a game it was! We found ourselves down by almost 10 points in the first set but that didn’t discourage the team at all. Meghan E. went back to serve and she served 10 points in a row to tie the game up and give the team enough energy and excitement to pull off a win in the end with a score of 26-24. Special thank you to Meghan for not only staying to play and help the high school team, but also for playing a major role in our victory with some tough over hand serving! Sarah P. was also vital to our win, as she dug a huge spike with her foot and tricked the other team to win a point! In the end, we had to go to a third game time breaker against St. Ignatius and we lost our momentum and lost 9-15. It was one of the most exciting games of the season with some fantastic rally’s and performances by all team members! CIS1 has one more game of the season left on Monday against Wes-leyan Christian Academy. See you there!

CIS2 had only one game this week against Wesleyan Christian Academy. The team had a great performance both sets, considering they were playing against a much more experienced and older team from Wesleyan. Leanna S. was a force at the net, scoring us many points in the first game by jumping and volley-ing the ball back over the net. Sofia and Julia also helped the team by serving tough to our opponents. Nicky G. was a strong passer in both games, passing some really tough serves with ease. In the end we lost 13-25 and 8-25. The team is excited to play their last game against CCC on Monday.
