Updated August 12, 2020

Dear Amplus Families: Thank you for reviewing our student handbook. It is important that we have a common understanding of Amplus Academy’s procedures in an effort to ensure learning and consistent expectations. This secondary handbook is intended to give students and families a summary of Amplus Academy’s policies, guidelines, rules, and practices. It is not intended to be all-inclusive and is subject to change. We continually evaluate programs, activities, and procedures to make our school a safe, positive learning environment for all of our students. Please continue to check the school’s website, newsletters, etc. for updates and review this handbook annually. Once you have read this handbook, please review it with your child(ren). All first period/homeroom teachers and will review procedures from this handbook with all students at the start of school and throughout the year as necessary. We appreciate your cooperation and support to make Amplus Academy a great place to learn. Sincerely,

Our Mission, Vision, and Philosophy

Our Mission Amplus Academy operates as a free public charter school that welcomes and honors all. Our intent is that our students acquire knowledge and skills to become esteemed, distinguished and productive citizens who preserve the pillars of a free and just society.

Our Vision We will strive to ensure the academic, social/emotional and developmental needs of all learners with a data-driven focus that will afford students opportunities in college and career readiness.

Educational Philosophy Amplus Academy employs a classical education model incorporating the Direct Instruction teaching method. Additionally, we use external testing (SBAC, ACT, MAP, PSAT, EOC) and teacher collected data to assist in ensuring student success. Utilizing data to drive instructional practices allows for all our students to receive enrichment and intensive interventions, as appropriate. This “student first” approach allows us to help students achieve their academic goals to elevate their learning. All curriculum will be a direct reflection of Nevada Academic Content Standards (NVACS) and daily objectives and assessments will be aligned to NVACS. As a K-12 school we are ensuring that we meet the NVACS standards as well as scaffolding our curriculum to provide a successful growth model for students to build upon the standards in their grade level. In our efforts to provide a high-quality educational experience, the administration supports our grade level teams in Professional Learning Communities to review data, identify areas of need and align instructional practices. Administration also ensures that data drives instruction as well as professional development around best practices. Additionally, the administrative team regularly visits classrooms to provide teachers with consistent coaching and feedback to support professional growth. The school employs a continuous improvement model that focuses on principles and practices that are developed by research and data. The school supports researched-based practices by including the following in its daily operation of the school: Academic Excellence: Amplus Academy has invested significant financial resources in the development of a strong academic program that provides students with an excellent academic foundation. We have carefully selected the finest curriculum to be used by our teaching staff in order to accomplish our purpose. All of our curriculum meets or exceeds the Nevada Academic Content Standards (NVACS). College Readiness: The school’s focus on a liberal arts education provides the academic foundation necessary to succeed in an increasingly global and competitive society. Students focus much of their time on mastering the core subjects of English, history, mathematics, reading, and science. Furthermore, the school’s first priority is to bring students up to grade level in reading and math, so they will be able to master other subjects as well. Structured Discipline: Students are expected to follow a clearly defined and structured discipline program. This program encourages personal responsibility and respect for others.

Page 9: parent student handbook final secon€¦ · 23/11/2020  · This secondary handbook is intended to give students and families a summary of Amplus Academy’s policies, guidelines,

Amplus Academy Parent and Student Handbook 2020-2021 DRAFT

Student Responsibility: In addition to preparing our students for academic success, we seek to develop a strong sense of responsibility in each child. We want students to take personal ownership of their success or failure, regardless of their background or previous experiences. This includes sound decision-making, an ability that is becoming critical in our ever-changing, complex world. Students must meet high expectations both academically and behaviorally. Our teachers work with students and parents to promote the responsibility necessary for success both in and out of school. Student responsibility is taught and reinforced through our Archers In the Making (AIM) Program. The AIM curriculum comprehensively identifies the skills, behaviors, and virtues students will need for character growth and development to prepare them for success, both academically and throughout their lives. The AIM (Archers In the Making) program highlights and rewards Archers In the Making when they display distinguished, esteemed, and honorable behavior. Additionally, our Archer Academy supports the AIM program by providing a safe and structured after school program offering remediation and acceleration. This program espouses the following Archer principles:

Academic support Reward and recognition Character development Help and assistance Engagement of families Research opportunities

Civic Responsibility: It is appropriate to demonstrate a great deal of both pride in the history of the United States and gratitude for our unique roots by gifted men and women. We encourage our students to be informed and involved citizens. Parental Involvement: Research indicates that a leading predictor of student success is parental involvement; therefore, parents are included in many aspects of the education program. The school governance structure relies on significant parental input and cultivates a close working partnership between staff members and parents. In addition, parents are asked to volunteer and to commit to an active involvement in their child’s education. Parents are encouraged to use Infinite Campus to view their child’s grades and progress. This web-based information center provides parents with both school information and student academic data, thus promoting an increased accountability of all participants in the educational process—teachers, students, and parents. We encourage all stakeholders to regularly check infinite campus.

Attendance Regular attendance establishes good work habits and self-discipline. Our school records attendance every class period in Infinite Campus.

Arrival Students should arrive at school between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. Doors will be unlocked at 7:30 a.m. at which time students are expected to enter the school and proceed to their first period class. Morning supervision is not provided before 7:30 a.m. All student drop-offs should occur in the back (by the playground) as the front parking lot is reserved for senior parking and should not be used as a drop-off location. For the safety and security of all students, parents should not exit their vehicles when dropping off their student(s).

Dismissal School dismisses at 3:05/3:15 p.m. In the interest of students’ safety and teachers’ preparation time, parents are asked to pick up their children within 15 minutes of their dismissal time. Please see our website for detailed pick up instructions.

Late Student Check-in Procedure If a student needs to be checked-in during the school day, the student must be accompanied into the school by an adult and signed in at the office.

Early Student Check-out Procedure Parents who checkout their child early from school, for any reason, must sign the child out, at the front office with a picture identification. Parent/guardian picking up the child must be listed as a contact or emergency contact in Infinite Campus. Students will not be released from classroom instruction until the parent/guardian is in the front office. The office will be closed 30 minutes prior to first dismissal. Students may not be checked out after that time. Please plan appointments accordingly.

Absences All absences are to be verified by communication, preferably before 8:00 a.m. on the day of the absence, but no later than three days after the absence. All attendance is recorded in Infinite Campus and should be monitored regularly. School Phone Number: 702-970-6800. School attendance email: [email protected]

Pre-arranged Excused Absences If a student knows they are going to be absent, it is the responsibility of parents and/or students to:

● email the teacher and notify them of the planned absence ● check the student’s organizer and Google classroom for homework and schoolwork

assignments ● collect any books and materials needed to complete the work prior to the absence

Page 12: parent student handbook final secon€¦ · 23/11/2020  · This secondary handbook is intended to give students and families a summary of Amplus Academy’s policies, guidelines,

Amplus Academy Parent and Student Handbook 2020-2021 DRAFT

Unexcused Absences ● If a student is not present in a class, teachers will mark the student absent. If the student is

identified as absent without parent permission the attendance mark will be recorded as an unexcused absence.

● Students who leave campus without permission will automatically be recorded as an unexcused absence in any class period missed and may face disciplinary action for truancy.

Truancy Nevada is a compulsory education state. Students are required by law to attend school each day. If a student chronically fails to attend school, defined by Amplus Academy as missing more than three consecutive days per school year with no communication from the parent/guardian regarding the absence, Amplus Academy may report this information to a truancy officer.

Withdrawal Procedure To withdraw a student, a parent/guardian must complete a Student Withdrawal form available in the office.

Tardy Policy Secondary students are allowed appropriate time to transition between class periods. Students are given a one-minute warning bell before the tardy bell. By the second bell students are expected to be:

a. seated at their desks, b. with the necessary materials ready (pencil, book, binder), c. in full school uniform (name tag, shirt tucked in, etc.), and d. working on the opening activity

Transportation If your child’s mode of transportation needs to change, a written notice must be given to the main office for the school to release your student.

School Lunch Parents are expected to send a nutritious lunch with their child(ren) each day. The school does not provide lunch for students. If a student does not bring lunch to school, students will be permitted to call home from the student support office.

Field Trips/Extracurricular/Athletics When students travel away from school, they are subject to the same rules, regulations, and appropriate politeness observed at the school. Misbehavior or disregard of school policies can result in denial of field trip privileges and appropriate interventions either during the event and/or once the student returns to school. Signed permission slips must be on file with the school for each student on each field trip.

Celebrations at School ● Veteran’s Day ● Religious Holidays (Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Ramadan, Easter) ● Valentine’s Day ● Memorial Day ● AIM events ● Birthday Celebrations - If you have questions on what is acceptable, please contact secondary

administration. *Halloween: At Amplus Academy we do not celebrate Halloween.

Unity and Diversity: Religious or Other Opt-Out Policy Amplus Academy does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, disability or age in its programs and activities. We recognize the strength we have in our different cultures, nationalities, and religious faiths and we honor the diversity of our students and families. Parents should exercise their ability to opt-out of any activity they determine to be in conflict with their religious or cultural tenets. Please inform the classroom teacher(s) of any concerns.

Medical Information 1. A parent/guardian will complete the "Health" section in Infinite Campus for each student as part

of school enrollment. 2. Parents of students who have specific or special health concerns, chronic illness, or need of

medication during school hours will add that information to the “Health” form at the time of enrollment. This information will be given to the school nurse who will create a red “health alert” folder to be kept at the school office. This folder will contain information on procedures to follow in case of illness or emergency, as well as any necessary parental permission. Should changes occur that may affect the student’s care, it is the parent’s responsibility to notify the school and to update the student’s health information at the school office.

3. The school nurse will provide teachers with health files on students with health concerns, chronic illnesses, and/or identification of students who take daily medication during school hours.

Immunization Requirements By law, every student must be immunized before entering school. Prior to school, every student must have the following immunizations:

● 4 or 5 DPT vaccines ● 3 or 4 doses of polio vaccine ● 3 Hepatitis B ● 2 Varicella (K and First Grade) ● 2 MMR ● 2 Hepatitis A (K and First Grade) ● Tetanus Booster – Tdap (before 7th Grade) ● MCV4 or MenACWY (before 7th Grade) **see below ● meningococcal vaccination **see below

Parents can find out more about the vaccines required to attend school in Nevada at https://www.immunizenevada.org/NVSchoolRequirements. They can also check and print their child’s immunization records at https://izrecord.nv.gov. First-time users may need to contact the Nevada WebIZ help desk at 1-877-NV-WebIZ (877-689-3249) or email [email protected].

Seventh Grade Immunization Entry Requirements: ● 1 Tdap3 Hepatitis B ● 2 Varicella (Chickenpox) - history of disease is acceptable, parent must sign verification

statement on school immunization record ● 1 Meningococcal

The data is to be tabulated on a Nevada Certificate of Immunization form and signed by your physician. The parents are required to provide access to this information. This can be done by bringing the original records into the school, where a copy will be made for the student file, or parents can authorize Amplus Academy to access WebIZ **Beginning with the 2017-2018 school year, all Nevada public and private school students enrolling in 7th grade are required to receive one dose of the quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MCV4 or MenACWY). Additionally, all students enrolled as a freshman of a Nevada university, 23 years or younger, may not attend after September 1, 2017 without proof of meningococcal vaccination on or after age 16. This vaccine protects against four types of the bacteria that cause meningococcal disease (serogroups A, C, W, and Y).

Illness During the School Day In case of illness, students will come to the school office. School staff will contact parents if they deem it is necessary. Students who are ill (fever, vomiting, excessive productive coughing, runny nose and/or eyes) should be kept home; if illness commences at school, students must be picked up immediately from school. If a parent cannot be reached, the emergency contact listed on the student enrollment form will be notified to come and pick up the student.

Medications Students in need of prescription medication during the day will need a doctor’s note, the medication in the original container, and a signed release form. Office staff will dispense medications if they comply with this policy. Non-prescription medication will not be dispensed unless the parent brings the medication to school and signs a release form. Students with asthma may carry their inhaler to school in their backpacks only if the office has on file the above three items as well as a special, parent release form that may be obtained from the office. These documents must be on file with the office even if the student only occasionally carries the inhaler to school. It is vital that every inhaler is marked with the student's full name in permanent marker. Similarly, students may carry their Epi-pen in their backpacks only if the office has on file the doctor’s note and a signed release form.

Fees & Payments School Supply Fund Amplus works hard to provide the best learning environment for our students and give our teachers all the resources they require. To simplify the school supply process, we simply ask parents to contribute $20 for each child to the school supply fund. The school supply fund money will be used to buy all the necessary supplies for our classrooms.

Page 15: parent student handbook final secon€¦ · 23/11/2020  · This secondary handbook is intended to give students and families a summary of Amplus Academy’s policies, guidelines,

Amplus Academy Parent and Student Handbook 2020-2021 DRAFT

Class & Field Trip Fees Class fees and field trip fees will be assessed as needed throughout the year. It is our goal to make these fees as reasonable and cost effective as possible. All fees should be resolved by the end of the academic year. Payment plans are available upon request. Class fees will be published in the annual Course Catalog.

Unauthorized Solicitation of Funds It is not permitted for any individual (student, staff, or parent) to sell merchandise to students on school grounds, through school media sites, or during school functions, with the exception of approved school fundraisers.

Safety & Security For the safety of our students, no one is ever allowed to go directly to a classroom to pull a child out of class.

1. The designated entry doors will be unlocked by 7:30 a.m. each day for student arrival. 2. All other doors remain locked throughout the school day. 3. The school premises are monitored by both video and audio surveillance in most classrooms and

video surveillance in common areas.

Emergency School Procedures Emergency drills are held throughout the year. Safe areas inside and outside the building are designated for each classroom. Emergency procedures are posted in each classroom and parents may obtain a copy of these classroom procedures upon request.

Comprehensive Emergency Response Plan 1. In the event that the school premises must be evacuated, staff will escort students to a

safe location. 2. Once students are located to a safe location, staff members will contact guardians and/or

other approved adults through the Infinite Campus platform.

School Closures Parents are ultimately responsible for deciding if inclement weather is severe enough that they cannot drive to school. If school dismisses early, the media will air the announcement as soon as possible. One of the following messages will be aired by the media:

● "Schools Will Be Closed" (day and date) ● "Schools Will Start Two Hours Late" (day and date) ● "Schools Will Dismiss Early" (day and date)

Amplus Academy utilizes SafeVoice Nevada (www.safevoicenv.org) as a reporting mechanism for student concerns. This is an anonymous and voluntary platform for students, parents, and community members to report incidents. At Amplus Academy, we encourage parents and students to communicate with staff as frequently as possible either through the SafeVoice platform or to staff emails. Amplus Academy Administration will investigate all reports and incidents that violate the Behavior Expectations for all students. Administration will refer criminal activity to local law enforcement, as needed. The Office of Civil Rights office will be contacted when infractions infringe on the civil rights of our students and/or staff. Per the FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) regulations, all staff are prohibited from discussing the discipline and investigation of other students. FERPA is a federal privacy law that gives parents certain protections with regard to their own child(ren)'s education records, such as report cards, transcripts, disciplinary records, contact and family information, and class schedules. As a parent, you have the right to review your child's education records and to request changes under limited circumstances. To protect your child's privacy, the law generally requires schools to ask for written consent before disclosing your child's personally identifiable information to individuals other than you.

(c) Repeated or pervasive nonverbal threats or intimidation such as the use of aggressive, menacing or disrespectful gestures;

(d) Threats of harm to a person, to his or her possessions or to other persons, whether such threats are transmitted verbally, electronically or in writing;

(e) Blackmail, extortion or demands for protection money or involuntary loans or donations; (f) Blocking access to any property or facility of a school; (g) Stalking; and (h) Physically harmful contact with or injury to another person or his or her property.

Mandatory Expulsion Reviews In accordance with NRS 392.467, no student may be suspended or expelled until the pupil has been given notice of the charges against him or her, an explanation of the evidence and an opportunity for a hearing, except that a pupil who poses a continuing danger to persons or property or an ongoing threat of disrupting the academic process or who is selling or distributing any controlled substances or is found to be in possession of a dangerous weapon as provided by NRS 392.466 may be removed form the school immediately upon being given an explanation of the reasons for his or her removal and pending proceedings, to be conducted as soon as practicable after removal, for the pupil’s suspension or expulsion. All hearings concerning expulsion must be closed to the public. Truancy is not grounds for expulsion. A pupil who is participating in a program of special education, other than a pupil who is gifted or talented or who receives early intervening services, may not be suspended from school for more than 10 days and/or be permanently expelled from school should the review of the circumstances determine that the action is in compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Act, 20 U.S.C. 1400 et seq. At Amplus Academy, we reserve the right to automatically recommend for expulsion:

• Students who purposely and willingly intend harm to self, to other students, and/or to staff with the use and/or possession of any device or mechanism that could be interpreted as a weapon.

• Students who use and/or are in possession and/or distribute drugs and alcohol.

• Students who are found to be offenders in incidents of bullying (including cyber-bullying).

Secondary Academic Policies

Academic Success Amplus Academy recognizes the collective effort that students, teachers, and parents make to ensure student success. While working toward the common goal of student success, we recognize the inherent challenges and supports that are necessary. Amplus Academy is committed to addressing those challenges and providing those supports immediately and with fidelity. Parents are encouraged to actively participate in their child(ren)’s education by ensuring the student’s time is protected for studying. Providing a study space and checking the Google classrooms daily are additional ways to support our students. Parents communicating their questions, concerns, and feedback responsibly and respectfully with school staff is appreciated. Guaranteeing student(s) timeliness and attendance are also important ways to support student success.

Archer Organizer An important and vital component of academic achievement is that of organization of student work. Amplus Academy students will be given tools and training that will assist them in becoming independent students and in organizing their schoolwork, thus maximizing the potential for them to succeed. The Archer Organizer will be issued annually to secondary students. Parents (of grades 7-8 students) should review and sign the student’s organizer each night. Students (in grades 9-12) are encouraged to maintain the Archer Organizer or another calendaring and planning system daily.

Lockers Every secondary student is issued a locker. Amplus Academy will not be responsible for lost valuables kept in lockers. Secondary students are expected to keep backpacks, bags, purses, outerwear, and all belongings inside the locker. Backpacks, bags, and purses, and outerwear will not be allowed in classrooms or lying in the hallways. If needed, students will receive assistance in organizing lockers and backpacks. Students may not decorate the exterior of lockers for birthdays, holidays, etc. Approved locks for lockers can be obtained at the Secondary office and are the only locks permitted on the lockers. Administration has access to all student lockers for the safety and security of Amplus Academy.

Homework Homework is targeted and purposeful, based on material already taught in class; it is practice, reinforcement, and extensions of classroom content. Homework is differentiated based on age, developmental capacity, and academic needs. Research verifies that homework best accomplishes the goals of developing individual responsibility, independent study skills, organization, and time management when it is supported by family engagement. Should homework be assigned, it will be assessed for mastery of content, completion of content practice, and/or continuation of a longer-termed assessment. All homework will be connected to the NVACS. Homework will not be used as a punitive measure; the social emotional benefit will be evaluated prior to assigning homework by teachers.

Page 20: parent student handbook final secon€¦ · 23/11/2020  · This secondary handbook is intended to give students and families a summary of Amplus Academy’s policies, guidelines,

Amplus Academy Parent and Student Handbook 2020-2021 DRAFT

Late Work It is vital to the learning process that classwork/homework is completed by the date it is due. To encourage students to turn in work on time and keep pacing with the rest of the class, the consequence for late work is as follows: students will lose 10% of their earned score if an assignment is turned in one school day late; 20% of their earned score if assignments are turned in two school days late; 30% of their earned score if assignments are turned in three school days late; 40% of their earned score if assignments are turned in four school days late. If the assignment is turned in after four school days, the assignment score is an automatic 0 and the assignment will no longer be flagged as “missing” on Infinite Campus.

Make-up Work from Absences Students have an obligation to complete assignments missed during illness or during absence(s) from school. Students in the secondary school are encouraged to make initial and continual contact with the respective teachers when class has been missed. Within three days of returning from any absence students should have made that contact. Students, teachers, and parents can create effective timelines for student success that prohibits interruption of instruction in regards to make-up work. Students who miss assignments/test due dates because of an absence, when the assignment/test was previously announced will be expected to complete the assignment/test when they return to class.

Student Grade Placement, Acceleration, Promotion, or Retention The principal is authorized to make initial grade placement of a student and to promote, accelerate or retain students after initial grade placement. After initial grade placement, a student is expected to progress through the grades one year in each grade receiving the benefits of academic, social and physical growth usually accompanied with a full year of development. On occasion, it may be in the best interest of the student to have a new grade placement, be accelerated more than one grade, or be retained in the current grade. In this event, supporting documentation with interventions already offered to the student will be provided by the school. If a student’s parent or teacher believes one of these grade changes should be considered, a written request for consideration should be provided to the principal, including the reasons for such consideration. The final decision regarding placement, acceleration, promotion, or retention of a student rests solely with the principal. The goal of placing, accelerating, promoting or retaining a student is to ensure the opportunity for the student to achieve learning goals, meet state and school performance expectations, and to be prepared for high school, college, and career plans.

Promotion of Jr. High Students Jr. High Students must meet minimum criteria for promotion each year. Teachers may automatically recommend a student for promotion only if the student meets the following criteria:

1.Student passed all subjects three quarters of the year with at least a D grade. 2.Student attended school a minimum of 160 days (less than 21 absences). 3.Student has not been suspended during the year.

Page 21: parent student handbook final secon€¦ · 23/11/2020  · This secondary handbook is intended to give students and families a summary of Amplus Academy’s policies, guidelines,

Amplus Academy Parent and Student Handbook 2020-2021 DRAFT

Promotion of High School Students In order to assist students in their progress toward graduation and avoid having credits to recover during each high school year, the High School promotion policy requires students to complete core subject credits each year in order to automatically qualify for the next grade level of coursework. A list of core subjects for 9th, 10th, and 11th graders will be provided to students each fall. Students that do not receive credit for a class must complete external credit recovery or retake the course the following year before moving on to the next level of coursework.

Scheduling Schedules for the full academic year are released to students at orientation. Changes may be requested during the first 5 days of school with the student’s counselor for reasons that include mis-scheduling, credit matriculation, and/or leveling procedures. Beyond that, schedule changes will only be considered at the recommendation of the student’s teacher(s) or from administration.

Academic Plans According to Nevada Revised Statute 388.165 and 388.205, development of an academic plan is required in grades 7-9. This information is communicated with parents early in the school year, requiring students to identify educational goals. This document must be signed by both student and parent. The plan is a typical progression, but changes may be made depending on individual student ability and performance. Students who are eligible for acceleration of curriculum prior to 7th grade will have an individual meeting with the student, the parent/guardian, and our Director of Student Support and school counselor(s).

Academic Communication ● At the beginning of each class, secondary teachers will provide course expectations for the

class, explaining in some detail what standards and expectations will be established for the class.

● Infinite Campus will be the means by which secondary parents and students may check on the status of assignments and grades at any time. If they don’t have access, they must notify the school. It is not the responsibility of the teacher to send home reports or grades to the parents.

● Secondary classes utilize Google Classroom where assignments and daily schedules can be posted. Teachers will provide students with access codes for the safety and security of all students. Parents can have access to the Google Classroom by invitation with a parent code to protect student’s information and class communication.

● Quarter/Semester final grades will be available online the week following the end of each grading period;

● Year-end report cards will be mailed home the week following the end of school.

Post-Secondary Preparation Classes Amplus offers post-secondary preparation classes to prepare students for college and career readiness. Advanced Placement courses are offered in a variety of subjects. The annual course catalog provides an explanation of potential college credits that can be earned by participating and passing the course and any pursuant exams associated with the preparation classes.

Page 22: parent student handbook final secon€¦ · 23/11/2020  · This secondary handbook is intended to give students and families a summary of Amplus Academy’s policies, guidelines,

College Preparation General meetings for students transitioning to the Junior High School (from grade 6 to 7) and to the High School (from grade 8 to 9) for parents. The Director of Student Services will conduct these meetings. The counseling department strives to provide an opportunity for every parent and student to meet one-on-one with a counselor each year at a College and Career Readiness appointment for students 7-11. Information will be regularly communicated via email about scheduling these meetings throughout the year.

End of Course Exams End of Course (EOC) examinations measure how well a student understands the subject they are enrolled in. Currently, students take the EOC exam at the conclusion of the aligned course as an end of course final exam grade. The EOC exams are administered and scored at the school or district level with the Writing section of the test being hand-scored by the state’s assessment vendor. The EOC exams are aligned to the NVACS in ELA, mathematics, and science. EOCs are administered in the following subjects:

● Math I Emphasis on Algebra I ● Math II Emphasis on Geometry ● English Language Arts I, following grade 9 ● English Language Arts II, following grade 10

Nevada State Graduation Requirements http://www.doe.nv.gov/uploadedFiles/ndedoenvgov/content/High_School_Graduation/GRADREQ1920.pdf This link contains the graduation requirements for all Nevada State Diploma types. Amplus Academy creates student academic plans to achieve the CCR diploma, the most rigorous diploma type available.

Clubs/Sports/Activities Academic Requirements Students are expected to maintain academics as a priority before participation in any club/sport/or school activities. In order to participate, students must maintain a grade of 74% or better in every class and be in good standing for behavior. Eligibility will be evaluated every two weeks and dates will be posted by sport season. Ineligible students cannot participate in practices, games, club meetings, club events or any related activity until the student can establish eligibility. Grades will be pulled from Infinite Campus. Behavior Requirements Students who receive a “first” suspension during their respective sport season due to behavior issues, which includes, but is not limited to: disrespect, defiance or truancy, will not be allowed to participate in any activities during the suspension. If that same student receives a “second” suspension for any reason, they cannot participate in any activities for the remainder of that school year. If a student exhibits a pattern of misbehavior at any time during the year without requisite improvements, or is suspended for a safe school violation, that student will not be allowed to participate in Amplus Academy athletics.

Parent-School Communication Guidelines Communication at Amplus, as outlined in our school vision, will be positively framed and undertaken in good faith by all parties. Anyone with a question or concern is to take it to the person most able to address the issue. This allows for all members of the community to feel safe and valued and to have confidence that all concerns will be addressed.

Channels of Communication Members of the Amplus community who have a question, concern, feedback, or a need for information will identify the person best able to answer their question or concern or most logically to hear their feedback and will approach that person in a positive manner. We have established a clear communication list through which we invite you to bring any concerns or questions you may have. The persons listed are in order of who you should address your concern to first, next, etc. If, for some reason you are not comfortable taking your concern to the teacher first, you may take it to the next person on the communication list. If you are not satisfied with the resolution at any level, you may take it to the next person on the communication list. Parents should email the staff member and make an appointment.

Appendix A: Family Engagement Policy

Non-custodial parent/guardian Amplus abides by the provisions of the Buckley Amendment with respect to the rights of noncustodial parents. In the absence of a court order to the contrary, the school will provide the non-custodial parent access to the academic records and to other school-related information regarding the student. If there is a court order specifying that there is to be no information given, it is the responsibility of the custodial parent to provide the school with an official copy of the court order.

Likewise, non-custodial parents will have access to students during school hours in the same way that custodial parents do (including picking up the student from school) unless documentation to the contrary is presented to the school. It is the responsibility of the parents to provide the school with the appropriate documentation.

Caregivers (Temporary Guardian) If parents are going on vacation, over school days and will not be available in the case of an emergency or to pick up their student, the name of the temporary guardian and contact information must be provided to the front office and added to the Student Information System so the guardian can pick the student up from school, if necessary, while parents are away. Parents should also leave a completed medical permission to treat form with the guardian in case there is need for medical attention for the student while the parents are not available.

Volunteer Guidelines Amplus Academy asks families to provide 20 hours per year of volunteer service. Volunteers are expected to review and honor the following guidelines while visiting or volunteering for the school. Violation of these guidelines endangers the safety of students and the right to an safe and secure education. Those not abiding by these guidelines may be barred from the building and/or prevented from participating in future volunteer opportunities. Please contact the school’s office for information on becoming a volunteer.

General 1. Potential volunteers are required to complete the appropriate level of background check before a

volunteer assignment begins. Parents and guardians may complete the online Volunteer Authorization and Release form on the parents’ form site to begin the background check process. Individuals who do not have access to the parents’ form site may obtain a Volunteer Authorization and Release form in the school office.

2. All visitors and volunteers must be processed through the electronic visitor management system, using their driver’s license and must wear a form of identification provided by the school. They may also be required to submit to a criminal background check.

3. All visitors and volunteers must sign both in and out in the school office. They may not walk directly to any classroom unless given permission by the office staff.

communicating with the teacher and students. 3. Student infractions must be addressed by the classroom teacher. 4. Classroom issues regarding students are confidential. Visitors and volunteers may not talk with

others about the learning or disciplinary needs of any child other than their own. 5. Classroom visitors are allowed for a limited time and must have the principal’s permission.

Field Trips

Appendix B: Student Support Services & Special Education

It is the goal of the school to provide appropriate educational opportunities for all students. It is the school’s obligation to provide appropriate educational opportunity to all students with suspected disabilities or disabilities, as defined under the Individual with Disabilities Education Act (“IDEA”) and state special education rules and regulations. For additional specifics regarding a student’s special education rights, parents are encouraged to review the Procedural Safeguards that are available from a school administrator or special education provider.

Child Find The IDEA includes a Child Find Mandate. Child Find requires all school districts to locate, identify and evaluate all children with disabilities regardless of the severity of their disability. This obligation encompasses all children who are suspected of having a disability, including children receiving passing grades and “advancing from grade to grade…”. A parent who suspects that their child may have a disability and is in need of special education and related services may initiate a free evaluation of their child by contacting the school principal and providing a written request for an evaluation under IDEA and/or Section 504. The school must take the parents request into consideration and provide a response consistent with State and Federal special education requirements. If the school does not suspect a disability, it may refuse to conduct an evaluation. If the school refuses, it must give the parent written notice explaining the reason(s) why it is declining to initiate an evaluation, what data the decision was based upon, and other factors considered. The parents then have the right, if they choose, to request a due process hearing to seek a ruling to conduct an evaluation.

Rehabilitation Act of 1973 - Section 504 (General Education) Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, 29 USC 794, (sometimes referred to as “Section 504”) prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities solely on the basis of their disability. If you have Section 504 questions please contact the school’s principal who has been designated as the Section 504 Coordinator. The Section 504 Coordinator is responsible for investigating and resolving complaints. In addition, any individual who desires information related to the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, or the Americans with Disabilities Act, may contact the school’s principal or the Amplus Academy Special Education Department at (616) 222-1700. The school does not discriminate against individuals seeking to access a program or service of the school based on disability. Where an individual desires to participate in a program or service and needs a reasonable accommodation in order to do so, they should contact the school’s principal to request an accommodation. In addition, if you suspect that your child has a disability which may qualify him/her for support under Section 504, you should contact the school’s principal to begin the referral process. Upon initiation of the Section 504 referral process, parents will be provided with a copy of the Section 504 Procedural Safeguards and Parent/Student Rights which contains complaint and due process procedures.

The Individualized Education Program The school will comply with the IDEA and state regulations and every student identified as having a disability will be provided an Individualized Educational Program (IEP) designed to address their unique needs. All required components of the IEP will be addressed including but not limited to: a description of the student’s present level of academic achievement and functional performance including disability related needs, goals and objectives, supplementary aides and services, program services, ancillary services, extended school year, etc. All students with disabilities are considered general education students first. Each IEP is designed to assure that eligible students receive a free appropriate public education (FAPE) and specialized instruction delivered by highly qualified special education staff within the least restrictive environment (LRE). Prior to the opening of school, registration forms are reviewed to identify students with current IEPs from previous schools attended. The parents are informed of their rights, procedures, and responsibilities under special education law. Decisions regarding an IEP are made by the IEP Team. This team has required participant’s which minimally includes general and special education providers, administrators, and the parent(s). The IDEA includes specific rights for parents of children with disabilities. This information is contained in the document commonly referred to as the Procedural Safeguards. We encourage parents to review this document carefully so they are fully informed of their rights. Copies of this document are provided at a minimum of at least once per school year and can be obtained from your school office or by contacting the state’s Department of Education.

Educational Placement of Students with Disabilities The school is committed to educating students with disabilities in the least restrictive environment (LRE) in order to meet their educational needs as determined by the student’s IEP Team. This means that to the maximum extent appropriate, children who are disabled are educated with children who are nondisabled and special classes, separate schooling or other removal of children with disabilities from the regular educational environment occurs only if the nature or severity of the disability is such that education in regular classes with the use of supplementary aids and services cannot be achieved satisfactorily.

Parent Participation Parents are an important member of the school community and have the right to participate in all meetings involving the evaluation, identification, and educational placement of their student. Parents will be invited to participate and share information about their student prior to and during the IEPT meeting. Parents are encouraged to review the Procedural Safeguards so that they are fully informed of their rights.
