"Building Champions with a Future and a Hope"
Dear Advantage Academy North Duncanville Families, I hope that you had a restful and rejuvenating summer. As we begin another school
year, I am reminded of an African proverb; “it takes an entire village to raise a child”
seems fitting when I consider the accomplishments achieved and those to come! Your
commitment to your child’s education past and present is a good example of what is
required of that village to achieve success. Therefore, one of the goals of this school
year is to help build and support an even stronger village by relying on you the families
who are our most important partners to ensure a quality education for every student! As the Principal, I am thrilled to be a part of a school community where family
members are visible and actively engaged, as well as an integral component of
Advantage Academy. I am honored and privileged to lead a dynamic community where
teachers and staff cultivate an environment where students achieve and believe in
themselves and their school. Together let’s honor our school’s history!
With our school’s aim of having a greater emphasis on improving academic outcomes
and high student achievement school-wide, Advantage Academy North Duncanville will
continue to incorporate the core values of the school: Respectful
Individuals, Responsible Leaders, and Reflective Achievers. Using these as our
guiding principles, each child will be encouraged and supported in working to his/her
full potential academically, socially, and emotionally. In order to achieve these things, I
have included several ways that family members of our school community can work
together with Advantage Academy staff:
Send your child to school every day on time.
Establish a daily routine for studying.
Keep in touch with your child’s teacher via e-mail, telephone, notes, or letters.
Attend all school-wide events, classroom events, and conferences.
Celebrate your child’s success (giving verbal praise), no matter how small it may
seem.
Remember it does take a village to raise a child; and also it takes a very special school
like Advantage Academy North Duncanville to educate them. Please know that I
welcome and encourage your participation, support, and efforts as they are greatly
valued and appreciated. Wishing you a wonderful upcoming year filled with success! I
look forward to seeing you and your student(s) bright and early for our first day of
school, Wednesday, August 17th!
Sincerely,
Darketsha Williams
Principal

Tardy/Early Checkout It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to get the
child to school on time. Students are required to be in
attendance the entire time a class or a course is being
offered. Promptness is important to reduce interruption of
the learning process.
A student who arrives late to school or must check-out
early must check in with the School Office before
proceeding to class or leaving the campus. A written,
approved excuse including the parent’s signature must be
presented or the student’s tardy or early check-out will be
documented as unexcused. If a student is late to any class
during the regular school day, he/she will be reported
tardy regardless.

Curriculum & Instruction
Advantage Academy Curriculum
Advantage Academy uses the TEKS Resource System™ (TRS™) of curriculum management for
implementation of core content curriculum. Other content areas are required to use
the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills documents provided by the state and other system
programs and developed tools. All parents can visit their website: www.teksresourcesystem.net
Advantage Academy Instructional Programs The Advantage Academy academic program is built on its mission and vision with emphasis on
"Revolutionizing American Education" and strong character. We believe that these values will
assist each and every student in becoming a true "CHAMPION."
English /Language Arts programs focus on a rigorous curriculum of grammar, writing, and
literacy skills. Through these components students are expected to build knowledge, gain insights,
explore possibilities, and broaden their perspectives.
Mathematics/ Science programs target skill development and growth in independent thinking and
reasoning. These classrooms are equipped with various materials to enrich student learning and
encourage discovery. The latest research indicates that future workers in our country must become
skilled in the "STEM" areas (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) as most businesses
and industries are creating increasing demands for quality technology skills, problem solving, and
higher level thinking.
Social Studies/History programs promote student understanding of historical concepts and
important details about history and culture by allowing students to discover connections between
the truth in history and their lives today. Through inquiry, it is our goal to challenge students to
establish a foundation of knowledge that created “One Nation Under God.”

College & Career Readiness
Students at every level should work toward keeping college as a real, viable option when graduation from high school is
achieved. None of us today knows what any student’s future holds, and we want to take steps now to make it possible for
every student to enter into a university, college, or career training program when the time arrives. We want each student
to be well prepared to succeed in the first year of continuing his or her education after high school. Success in college is a
journey that a family should commit to traveling together, and we are here to support our Advantage Academy families as
they travel this journey. College and Career Readiness is the focus at Advantage Academy. Being prepared with the skills
that you need to succeed in college and career begins with success in high school.
Success in high school involves developing good habits as a (K-8) student and meeting the requirements to graduate from
high school on time and with the grades, test scores, skills, experiences, and character needed for the next steps in life.
We do not want our students to find themselves with limited choices as they graduate from Advantage Academy. We
want our students at Advantage Academy to graduate prepared to move smoothly into the college, university, or training
program of their choice and our academic programs are designed with this goal in mind.
To help students plan and stay on track toward college readiness, Advantage Academy participates in a program of
college readiness assessments. Assessments begin in 8th grade and one or two assessments are taken every year. Some of
these assessments require fees to be paid directly to the testing agency. Details will be provided to students as the date for
their specific assessment approaches.
State Assessments 2016-2017
STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness) Grades 3–8 and End of Course (EOC) In addition to routine tests and other measures of achievement, students at certain grade levels will take state-mandated
assessments, such as the STAAR, in the following subjects:
Mathematics, annually in grades 3–8
Reading, annually in grades 3–8
Writing, including spelling and grammar, in grades 4 and 7
Science in grades 5 and 8
Social Studies in grade 8 End of Course (EOC) English 1, English 2, Biology, Algebra I and U.S. History
Any other subject and grade required by federal/state law, such as TELPAS for Grades K - 12.
Successful performance on the reading and math assessments in grades 5 and 8 and EOC are required by law in order for the
student to be promoted to the next grade level or graduate.
Investing In the Future of Our Children
The Whole Student philosophy is based on a broad concept that, in order for a child to be educated successfully,
he/she must be healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged. It asks that the school community as a team
look at the whole picture and work together to ensure that each student:
Enters school healthy and learns about and practices a healthy lifestyle.
Learns in an environment that is physically and emotionally safe for students and adults.
Is actively engaged in learning and is connected to the school and broader community.
Has access to personalized learning and is supported by qualified, caring adults.
Is challenged academically and prepared for success in college or further study and for employment and
participation in a global environment.
Whole student education requires that all the components work together, not in isolation, for each student, in
each school, and in each community. Advantage Academy supports a comprehensive approach to teaching,
learning, and community involvement which must collaboratively shift the way we think and must integrate and
coordinate the whole student approach.

Building Champions
Through Mentors
At Advantage Academy we believe that
mentoring students has a great impact on a
students future. When a student is
mentored, they begin to believe in
themselves, which creates positive change
and promotes a happy and successful life.
Over the past seven years, we have seen
adults and students influenced through
mentoring partnerships.
Mentoring creates a caring connection
through positive relationships with a
person who inspires and sustains hope.
The mentor’s role is to make sure that
students know we believe in them, which
encourages their own beliefs in
themselves.
We have a variety of mentoring programs,
including:
Partnering Pals
Peer Assisted Leadership (PALS)
AIM (Attendance & Motivation)

Character & Leadership Education
Advantage Academy’s commitment to character and leadership education is at the heart
of our mission. Character and leadership will enable students to set aspirations high and to
obtain personal goals while living a champion’s life.
It is the schools belief that a student and their parent’s commitment to character and
leadership education will play an essential part in the success of the student. Advantage
Academy has adopted character and leadership programs which embody traits which we
believe help in the building of a Champion. Administrators and teachers will strive to create
positive character and leadership qualities in all students for the betterment of the community.
Advantage Academy will involve all students in character and leadership programs on a
weekly or bi-weekly basis.
Athletics All Advantage Academy
campuses offer an athletic
program. Each campus features
its own respective athletic
program representing the

Exemptions Texas law allows (a) physicians to write medical exemption statements that the vaccine(s) required would be medically harmful or injurious to the health and well-being of the child or household member, and (b) parents/guardians to choose an exemption from immunization requirements for reasons of conscience, including a religious belief. The law does not allow parents/guardians to elect an exemption simply because of inconvenience (for example, a record is lost or incomplete and it is too much trouble to go to a physician or clinic to correct the problem). Schools and child-care facilities should maintain an up-to-date list of students with exemptions, so they may be excluded in times of emergency or epidemic declared by the commissioner of public health. Instructions for requesting the official exemption affidavit that must be signed by parents/guardians choosing the exemption for reasons of conscience, including a religious belief, can be found at www.ImmunizeTexas.com under “School & Child-Care.” Original Exemption Affidavit must be completed and submitted to the school or child-care facility. For children claiming medical exemptions, a written statement by the physician must be submitted to the school or child-care facility. Unless it is written in the statement that a lifelong condition exists, the exemption statement is valid for only one year from the date signed by the physician. Provisional Enrollment All immunizations should be completed by the first date of attendance. The law requires that students be fully vaccinated against the specified diseases. A student may be enrolled provisionally if the student has an immunization record that indicates the student has received at least one dose of each specified age-appropriate vaccine required by this rule. To remain enrolled, the student must complete the required subsequent doses in each vaccine series on schedule and as rapidly as is medically feasible and provide acceptable evidence of vaccination to the school. A school nurse or school administrator shall review the immunization status of a provisionally enrolled student every 30 days to ensure continued compliance in completing the required doses of vaccination. If, at the end of the 30-day period, a student has not received a subsequent dose of vaccine, the student is not in compliance and the school shall exclude the student from school attendance until the required dose is administered. Additional guidelines for provisional enrollment of students transferring from one Texas public or private school to another, students who are dependents of active duty military, and students who are homeless can be found in the TAC, Title 25 Health Services, Sections 97.66 and 97.69. Documentation Since many types of personal immunization records are in use, any document will be acceptable provided a physician or public health personnel has validated it. The month, day, and year that the vaccination was received must be recorded on all school immunization records created or updated after September 1, 1991.
