Safety• School
Secure Building & Check-In/Out Background Checks for Volunteers Practice Drills
• Fire, Tornado, Lockdown, Evacuation HOOT – How Oakland Operated Together
• Classroom Students are taught routines and expectations
for movement and use of community spaces. We use the Talk-It-Out method for conflict
resolution as well as “I” messages. A social skill lesson is taught weekly. Our “First Aid Center” includes band-aids, mints,
ice packs, crackers, and lotion.

Students need gym shoes and socks on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
• Library Media Center Students can check out two library books for up to two
weeks every Tuesday. Students can renew them if necessary.
One book should be within his/her Lexile range (100 points below and above his/her Lexile score). The other book can be a free choice.
• Nurse Release forms are needed for students to have/take
medicine at school. This includes inhalers, cough drops, medicated lip balm, etc.

Portfolios
• Students collect reading, writing and speaking, and math samples in a binder. They review and reflect on their progress throughout the year.
• Students and parents create an action plan to meet the state standards for first semester and revise it second semester.
• The February conference is led by your child as he/she shares his/her portfolio.
• In late May we invite parents to an end-of-the-year portfolio sharing picnic in the garden area.

Absences and Transportation
• Absences Notify the office when your child will be absent. Work will NOT be gathered in advance of an
absence, such as when families take a vacation.
Extra copies and updated lists of incomplete work will not be provided.
• Transportation If your after school plans must change, the
classroom teacher must be notified. If I am not made aware of the change, your child will be sent home the normal way. Don’t assume I will see my e-mail. I may be absent that day.

Book Orders, Toys, Clothing• Book Orders
Flyers are passed out monthly. Ordering online is a great option!
• Toys and Games Please leave these at home. If taken by a teacher,
a parent will need to pick them up. This includes trading cards, electronics, jewelry/watches, etc.
• Clothing Students need gym shoes for P.E. (and recess). A sweatshirt can be stored in his/her cubby. See the Oakland Handbook for appropriate dress.

Birthdays• Students with summer birthdays will be
recognized on their half birthdays.
• The class will sing “Happy Birthday,” and I give the birthday student a certificate, pencil, and sticker.
• Students can stop by the office to pick a birthday book.
• Please do not send in treats or goodie bags.
• Invitations CANNOT be passed out at school.
