Doña Ana County Head Start / Early Head Start is now recruiting families for enrollment into the program. Encourage your friends, family and neighbors to apply early and give their children a HEAD START! If you would like to help in the recruitment process call the Family Outreach Worker at your center or pick up some applications to give to friends. Remember the days of making paper airplanes as a kid and seeing how far you could make them fly? This month’s Father-And-Family activity takes you back to your childhood and asks you to break out the paper and fold some new airplanes into existence. And, while you’re at it, you’re invited to teach your kids something about the Four Forces of Flight. Who knows, one of them might want to be a pilot or build space shuttles some day. This information could come in handy, and if they don’t hear it from you now, there’s a chance they won’t hear it in time to discover that they really like flight studies!

The Four Forces of Flight…

In a nutshell, the four forces of flight are these: Lift, Thrust, Gravity, and Drag. Here’s how they work: LIFT is the force that pushes airplanes up. If the air flows well over the wings, the air-plane will have lift and it will rise. THRUST is the force that pushes an airplane forward (like a jet engine does for a jet and like a child does for a pa-per airplane), GRAVITY is the force that’s always pulling downward on all things, including airplanes in flight. Lastly, DRAG is the wind resistance that slows planes down and helps them land. If you like, you can build a paper airplane and demonstrate these things by holding the airplane up and going over each of the four forces of flight.

Getting Started…

Get some paper—small paper, large paper, you name it. Then, make some paper airplanes! You can remember how to make at least one basic style of paper airplane, and your kids probably know how to make some, too. Have a competition to see who can throw their airplane the farthest. You can both make one plane, or you can each make your own. The sky’s the limit!

¿Te acuerdas cuando eras niño y hacías aviones de papel, tratando de ver que tan lejos podrían volar? Este es el mes del Padre y las actividades en familia que te llevará a revivir tu niñez. Re-querirá que busques papel y comiences a doblar para dar vida a los aviones y al mismo tiempo, te invitamos a enseñar a tus hijos algo acerca de las Cuatro Fuerzas del Vuelo. Uno nunca sabe si uno de tus niños algún día será un piloto o diseñará transbordadores es-paciales. ¡Esta información le podría ser útil y si tu no se la cuentas, posible-mente no lo sabrán a tiempo para poder descubrir si realmente les gusta estudiar algo relacionado con el vuelo!

Las Cuatro Fuerzas del Vuelo…

En resumen, las cuatro fuerzas son: Des-pegue, Empuje, Gravedad, y Resistencia. Funcionan de la siguiente manera:

DESPEGUE es la fuerza que levanta los aviones.

Si el aire se desliza correctamente por so-bre las alas el avión despegará y se levanta-rá. EMPUJE es la fuerza que crea mo-vimiento hacia adelante (lo que el motor provee al avión, y lo que un niño al impul-sar su avión de papel), GRAVEDAD es la fuerza que está siempre jalando todas las cosas hacia abajo, incluyendo los aviones durante el vuelo. Y finalmente, RESISTEN-CIA es la fuerza del viento que hace que el avión vaya más lento, ayudándolos a ater-rizar. Si deseas, podrías construir un avión de papel y usar ese avión para explicar las cuatro fuerzas de vuelo.

Consigue papel—hojas pequeñas o grandes, lo que tu desees. Luego, ¡crea los aviones de papel! Seguramente te acuerdas como hacer al menos un tipo de avión de papel y probablemente tus niños saben hacer algunos modelos también. Crea una competencia para ver quien puede tirar más lejos su avión. Pueden trabajar juntos para hacer el mismo avión o cada uno puede realizar el suyo. ¡No hay límite algu-no!
