The Blair Basketball Club is a Nonprofit, 100% Volunteer Organization, with all board members & coaches doing their best to provide a positive experience

for all members of our club and to support our community. The BBC Board consists of twenty-two Voting Board Members, two High

School Coach Advisors, and other non-voting Member Volunteers.

BBC Board Objectives

• To place each athlete on a team through an evaluation process every year; with the essential mission to build basketball fundamentals and give a basketball experience to every player.

• To give the players a positive environment to learn and develop a love for the game.

• To learn the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship

• To increase the skillset in our local athletes and serve as a feeder program for our High School teams.

BBC Board Responsibilities

• To ensure the safety of all players in our club.• To evaluate all registered players and place them on a team

the we feel gives them the best opportunity to learn and have an enjoyable experience.

• To vet all coaches and select the best fit for each age group from the list of volunteers we receive.

• To give our coaches the necessary resources to help them with skill development for their teams.

• To manage facilities and schedules in an effort to give all teams two 90-minute practices per week.

• To be available to answer any questions or concerns that a player or parent may have throughout the season.

Parent Responsibilities

• To ensure players are at all practices, on time, ready to play. Do not use missing practices as punishment to players; this hurts the entire team. Speak with your coach and have them hold back playing time in games.

• To support the skills and philosophy’s being coached. Coaches have a plan for their team and they need all players to adhere to that plan to work together functionally.

• To NOT coach your player from the sidelines in games. Again, the coach has a plan in place. Let him run the team on the floor to avoid confusion with players. Players who listen to parents coaching can lose playing time.

• NOT to fixate on wins or losses and encourage this mentality in your player. While this is a competitive sport, at this level we are far more concerned with seeing the players skills progress. The medal they get as a 2nd-8th grader means far less than achieving success at the High School level and beyond.

• To encourage good sportsmanship in your player by supporting all players and coaches on the team.

• NOT to address officials or opposing coaches or players before, during, or after a game. Your coach will handle all issues on the floor.

• NEVER to, unless there is an immediate safety concern, approach your players bench, team huddle, or your coach during or immediately following a game.

• To communicate any safety concerns to your coach and the BBC Board immediately. Players safety is our number one concern. Please let us know if it is in jeopardy.

• To fulfill 3 volunteer hours for each registered player. If you choose to donate your $150 deposit, please let us know.

Player Responsibilities

• To attend practices and games and always give 100%. This is not social time.

• To be respectful to coaches and teammates.• To be respectful to officials and all opposing team coaches

and players.• To be a good teammate and a good sport.• To be respectful of all facilities used for practices and

games. Leave the facilities better than you found them.• To be responsible for all uniforms, gear, balls, water bottles

etc.• To report any safety concerns to their coach.

NBA/USA Basketball GuidelinesUpdated 3/20/18

The NBA and USA Basketball announced a set of age-specific rules and guidelines aimed at improving fundamentals and fostering long-term development.

The recommendations include:• No 3-point shooting or zone defenses for ages 7-8 and 9-11• When possible, players ages 7-8 should play on an 8-foot

basket, and players ages 9-11 should play on a 9-foot basket• Equal playing time throughout the game for ages 7-8 and

throughout the first three periods for ages 9-11 (coach's discretion after the third period)

Blair Basketball Club agrees with these guidelines and encourages our coaches to follow.

Playing Time & Attendance

• All Players get equal playing time the first three quarters of the game.

• The last quarter is to be used at the coach’s discretion.

• Missing practice puts a player behind and can stall the entire teams progress.

• Showing up late to games cuts into coaches pregame and hurts the entire team.

• Coaches can cut playing time to discipline players.

BBC Offense & Defense

• All BBC Teams will play Man to Man Defense– Learning M to M fundamentals will make players

effective with all types of Defenses – Zone Defenses in any form are not allowed without

the permission of the BBC Board. This will be determined on a case by case basis.

• All BBC Teams will play Motion Offenses– Learning Offensive fundamentals will make players

effective with all types of Offenses– Set plays do not help develop a players Basketball IQ

How To Address Concerns

• When a situation occurs that is not an immediate threat or safety concern to the player then we ask that you follow the process below.

• The 24-hour rule. At the moment an issue arises emotions are at their highest and people have not completely thought through the situation. We ask that if you have a concern please think it over for 24 hours prior to contacting your coach or the BBC Board. This should go for parents and players.

• If the concern is regarding playing time, position, or practice or game issues then the player must first discuss this with the coach.

• The parents may call, email, or set up a time to meet outside of practices or games to discuss concerns with coaches. Coaches are volunteers with busy schedule and may not be immediately available. Please respect their time.

• If a meeting with the coach does not resolve the parents and players concerns, then you can contact the BBC Executive Committee or another Voting Board Member. They will schedule a time to meet with a BBC Board member, the parents, and the coach/coaches. This will be a worst-case scenario, as we typically trust and will support the decisions of our coaches.

Team Placement

• Our goal to have at least 2 teams in every grade for boys & girls.

• Ideally, we would have 8 Players on Purple teams and 10 Players on White teams.

• Players are evaluated using objective and subjective data collected from evaluations.

• Previous years coaches provide feedback on players as well.• High School Coaches aid in player evaluations and team

placement• Team Formation Committee consists of 7 board members,

all of which will be present at evaluations.

Coach Selection

• Head Coaches are selected from parents that volunteered when registering their player

• Assistant Coaches are selected by the Head Coach, giving first consideration to those who volunteered when registering their player

• Coaches are always in short supply. Please volunteer if you are able. The BBC does an exceptional job of giving coaches the resources necessary to be successful.

League & Tourney Selection

• We work with each coach to determine placement in a competitive division in their league.

• Coaches select which tournaments their team will attend. BBC Board offers guidance as needed to help coaches with this.

• While we may do our best to place teams in the appropriate skill level, we cannot control when other teams “sandbag” to a lower division; or if a tournament is struggling to fill divisions.

• We do our best and adjust year to year as necessary.

• BBC and team correspondence will be communicated through Sports Engine. All players contact information must be updated in your SportsEngine user account. It is recommended to include your phone number and allow texting. Our Mission

• The objective of the program is to place each athlete on a team through an evaluation process every year; with the essential mission to build basketball fundamentals and give a basketball experience to every player. Evaluations are held in late March to early April and again in late August. Every player is assessed to ensure they are set on a team that is ideal for them in their present basketball skill level. We plan to have groups that play in silver, bronze and rec levels.
