Social Studies Focus: Cold War Conflicts

The Cold War conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union led to their involvement in proxy wars.

On June 25, 1950, the North Korean army invaded South Korea. The Korean War had begun.

President Harry Truman sent troops to help the South Korean army.

On July 27, 1953, the war ended. Korea was divided into two nations at the 38th parallel.

The country of Vietnam was also split after World War II. North Vietnam started fighting South Vietnam to unite the country under a Communist government.

The Soviet Union and China helped North Vietnam arm guerrillas.

In 1964, President Lyndon Johnson ordered an attack on North Vietnam.

In 1968, the North Vietnam launched the Tet Offensive.

Peace talks led to a ceasefire in 1973 and the withdrawal of U.S. troops.

In April 1975, South Vietnam surrendered to North Vietnam.
