• Principal meets with all 3er grade level teachers and Parent Involvement District Coordinator

• Developing a plan: calendar of parent meetings, workshops, resources and funding, presenters, outreach plan, support with logistics.

• Director/a se reúne con los todos los maestros del 3er grado y el/la coordinador/a del distrito escolar.

• Desarrollo de un plan: calendario de reuniones y talleres para padres, recursos y fondos, presentadores, plan para contactar a los padres, apoyo logístico.

• 2009-2010: 186 (district) 2,132 (county) 34,209 (State)

• Struggle with the high academic standards• Lack of motivation• Lack of responsibility• If a student does not read at grade level by 3rd grade,

he/she will be a candidate to abandon his/her studies, UNLESS PARENTS and SCHOOL intervene TOGETHER to help him/her improve until he reaches grade level.

• 2009-2010:186 (district) 2,132 (county) 34,209 (State)• “Batallan” con los estudios que requieren estándares altos

para estar a nivel de lo que deben saber en la escuela preparatoria.

• Pierden la motivación• Falta de reponsabilidad• Si un estudiante en 3er año, no lee al nivel que el Estado de

California pide, será candidato para abandonar sus estudios, A NO SER, que los PADRES y la ESCUELA intervengan trabajando juntos para lograr que estos estudiantes mejoren y se desempeñen al nivel que deben cada año.

SM Current Facts• 42% of 3rd graders are not

performing at grade level in Language Arts, meaning that:

• 69 students are having serious problems in reading (decoding) reading comprehension and writing in English and in Spanish.

• If these students do not improve by the end of May, some will qualify to be retained and others will struggle even worse in 4th and next grade levels.

• 42% de los estudiantes del 3er año escolar no están desempeñándose al nivel que debería. Esto significa que:

• 69 estudiantes entre 163 tienen serios problemas en la lectura (fluidez), comprensión de lectura y escritura.

• Si para fines de Mayo, estos estudiantes no mejoran, estarán en alto riesgo de repetir el año escolar o seguir en 4° año escolar con problemas aún más graves.

• At this point, there is nothing else that we can do IF PARENTS do not support, monitor and motivate their children at home.

• En este momento, no hay nada más que los maestros puedan hacer, si LOS PADRES no apoyan, supervisan y motivan a sus hijos en casa.

What are we going to do to help them?

Practically- En la práctica…

• Parents will attend 8 meetings to receive the tools and strategies to help their children.

• The only thing that parents need to bring is the positive attitude to help their children.

• Like visiting the doctor, parents will receive “medicine” that they need to provide at home in order to help their children succeed in school.

• Los padres asistirán a 8 reuniones donde se les entregarán las herramientas y estrategias para ayudar a su hijo/a.

• La única cosa que necesitan traer los padres es su actitud positiva para ayudar a sus hijos.

• Igual que cuando visitan al doctor, los padres recibirán “medicina”que se debe proveer en casa para mejorar el rendimiento escolar de sus hijos.
