Message from the Principal

Dear Camp Hill Middle School Families and Students,

The reopening of schools in Pennsylvania after the prolonged closure due to the COVID 19 pandemic is a very difficult process. Our district Leadership Team, Pandemic Planning Task Force, Building Pandemic Planning Task Force and School Board of Directors have been working tirelessly over the past several months to plan for a safe reopening for our staff and students. While no reopening is without risk, contained in these pages are the mitigating strategies and protocols that will be in place when we reopen Camp Hill Middle School to in person learning, whether it be in the blended 3 days a week model or the full 5 days a week reopening.

You will see that we require all students and staff to wear face coverings. Remember this phrase: Face coverings are the rule, not the exception. Staff will scan each student’s temperature upon arrival to the building in the morning. Students will be scheduled in cohorts and will rotate together as a group from class to class. We are encouraging students to take advantage of open lunch so that they may return home to eat, get some fresh air and take a face-covering break. You will read the district defined protocols followed by the middle school implementation details for arrival, social distancing, classroom activities, transitions, cleaning and dismissal. We have done our best to outline the broad concepts of the school day so that you may make the best choice for the education of your student.

I encourage you to read this document and the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) carefully as you consider your options to return via the blended, fully remote with CHSD teachers or the CAOLA option. I understand that this is a very difficult and emotional decision for every family and that no two family situations are alike. In creating this plan, we have done our very best to offer safety, flexibility and choice to our families. Please keep in mind that a choice to send your student to a cyber charter school comes at a great financial expense to our district and does not offer the flexibility or the possibility of remaining a Camp Hill student, like the other options we are providing.

If you have any questions regarding this plan or your student, please do not hesitate to contact me. I am happy to discuss your questions and concerns as we work together for the education of your child.

Yours in Education,

Leslee DeLong

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: How will I notify the school district of the learning option I am choosing for my child(ren)?

A: The district has developed an electronic form that you will submit indicating the learning option you are choosing for each of your children. A link to that form can be found here.

Q: How will the instruction during the 2020-2021 school year be different than the Spring of 2020?

A: In the spring, for a variety of reasons, our focus when we were quickly forced into a virtual model, was on flexibility. Our teachers tweaked their curriculum to focus on “essential content only” (the information that is absolutely necessary to be successful in subsequent courses). The state was very flexible with attendance requirements and instructional hour requirements. As we enter the 2020-2021 school year, the expectations from the State of Pennsylvania are very different. In response, the district has trained teachers in the use of the Schoology platform. This learning platform will allow teachers to provide more in-depth lessons that will adhere to the Camp Hill School District’s curriculum in a more stringent manner. Students will be required to log in daily and complete work as part of attendance and assignments will have due dates and will be graded. The expectations and level of rigor that you expect from Camp Hill School District will be maintained. Student accountability will be prioritized, and the students will need to maintain pace to be successful in the blended and remote learning options.

Q: If I decide to attend the Camp Hill’s blended or remote learning option, is that decision for the entire 2020-2021 school year?

A: No. The decision you make through the parent form will be your choice for the start of the school year. If you choose an option that allows your child to remain enrolled in Camp Hill School District, (blended, remote or CAOLA), the counselor and principal at your child’s school will work with you about what the best timing for switching options would be, if necessary.

Q: If I decide to attend CAOLA, is that decision for the entire 2020-2021 school year?

A: No. The decision to enter CAOLA means that your child is still enrolled in Camp Hill School District. If you would decide that option is not the best fit for your child, you may work with your child’s school counselor and building principal to create a timeline to change that would best meet your child’s needs.

Q: If I select to utilize the CAOLA option, how will that process work?

A: If you select the CAOLA option, you will be contacted by your child’s school counselor. The school counselor will coordinate a meeting with you and any other staff that may be needed, (i.e. your child’s case manager if they receive special education services), to facilitate course selection that will meet your child’s needs as a learner as well as requirements for graduation if your child is a high school student.

10

Q: If the Governor closes schools again, what will the plan be for our students?

A: Students enrolled in the CAOLA option could continue in the CAOLA option without interruption. Students in blended or remote options would begin to receive instruction remotely from Camp Hill staff on a daily basis. Daily attendance will be taken and students will be required to attend all synchronous lessons when they are provided and complete assignments according to given due dates.

Q: What is the cleaning protocol going to be for classrooms?

A: General disinfecting will begin before staff and students arrive and continue throughout the day using an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved disinfectant. Custodial staff will disinfect all high touch surfaces frequently during the day, including but not limited to, door handles, light switches, stair railings and sink handles. Bathrooms will be cleaned at least twice daily. All teaching staff will be provided with disinfecting materials in their classroom, including but not limited to: hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes and a spray bottle with our EPA approved disinfectant for spot cleaning. Use of the District’s Clorox360 electrostatic spray machine will occur daily throughout each building daily whenever possible. In the event that urgent deep-cleaning is necessary, the Director of Buildings & Grounds will close down the area for at least 24 hours if possible and begin deep cleaning.

Q: Will students and staff be wearing masks/face coverings?

A: Yes, we will be following Governor Wolf’s order. Additional disposable face coverings will be available in every building, should they be needed. Our expectation is full compliance from all students. Other than medical exceptions, students are required to wear face coverings in school.

Q: What do I do when my child is sick?

A: Symptom screening should be completed by all parents/guardians at home each morning before the school day. Students with symptoms and/or a fever of 100.4 or higher should not come to school. Keep children at home if they have a fever or are sick with any illness. Please alert the school of your child’s absence by calling the school attendance line at 717- 901-2450, and follow up with a written excuse for the absence. Parents/guardians are strongly encouraged to communicate their student’s COVID-19 symptoms and direct exposure to someone with COVID-19 when reporting an absence. Families and caregivers are encouraged to practice and reinforce good prevention habits at home and within their families.

Q: What is the communication plan if someone in a school tests positive for COVID 19? A: Protocols:

o The Department of Health (DOH) will be notified. DOH will assist the District with risk assessment, isolation and quarantine recommendations. A communication will be sent to families via the Blackboard Alert Messaging System. Contact tracing will be done by the school/DOH to determine who needs to be quarantined. Measures to maintain confidentiality of the affected individuals will be followed. School nurses will follow up with students and staff who are quarantined to ensure they are following the protocols outlined in the Public Health Guidance for Pre-K to 12 Schools.

11

Q: How will students be socially distanced in classrooms? A: Student desks will be spaced minimally 3 ft. or more apart. All desks will be facing the same

direction. If a student needs to be seated at a table, all students will be on the same side of the table for instruction.

Q: Can students stay in the same classrooms and teachers move?

A: We are scheduling students as cohorts in the middle school, as much as possible, to allow the same students to be together for most of their classes.

Q: How will the traffic flow in the hallways be managed?

A: We will have tape and directional arrows in the hallways, as well as social distancing reminders, to encourage orderly traffic flow. Additionally, teachers will accompany their classes to their next destination. Students will not be permitted to access their lockers in between classes.

Q: What will lunch look like for students who attend school?

A: Students will be encouraged to go home for lunch. Middle school students will have the option to continue to utilize open lunch, outside spaces, as well as the cafeteria and some classrooms as needed for lunch. Students and staff will be required to wear face coverings when getting and receiving lunches. Students will indicate their lunch choice period 1 daily: open lunch, staying in the building with a bagged lunch or purchasing a school lunch. Students who are staying for lunch will be dismissed to wash their hands and then proceed to the cafeteria to pick up their lunch. Students may eat in the cafeteria, in the cafeteria courtyard or at the outdoor picnic tables, weather permitting. Students who leave the building for open lunch must have a signed parent permission form on file with the office, or a handwritten note from a parent giving the student permission to leave the building for open lunch. When leaving the building, students may use the MS Office doors or the cafeteria doors. Classrooms that were used for eating will be cleaned at the end of the lunch period. At the conclusion of the lunch period, students will return to the building thorough the MS Office entrance or Cafeteria Doors.

Q: Will students’ temperatures be taken at school?

A: Yes, students’ temperatures will be taken as they enter the buildings. We are asking families (and staff) to pre-screen for symptoms every morning to ensure no one is coming to school with any COVID 19 symptoms. Guidance from our nurses will be provided to assist in this area.

Q: Will students have access to water fountains?

A: All water fountains will be closed to students and staff. Students are encouraged to bring water bottles to school. Water bottle fillers are available to students to refill their water bottles as needed.

Q: Will the district restrict visitors from entering the school? A: Only essential visitors will be allowed to enter the school building. All essential visitors will be

required to follow the same safety guidelines as all other school personnel. The district will offer virtual meetings whenever possible.

12

Q: What is the procedure for picking up my child early for an appointment?

A: Parents are asked to send an early dismissal note into the school with their child in the morning. At pick up time, students will be dismissed from class to the MS office. Parents will be required to wear a face covering prior to being allowed to enter the building. Parents must come to the secure MS Office entrance and check in with the secretary to pick up their child.

Q: Will students be able to participate in chorus?

A: As Chorus is a curricular course, the students will still meet in the Auditorium during the scheduled Chorus period. Large group indoor singing rehearsals will not occur. However, small group instruction or ensembles may continue. Additionally, the students will be utilizing a virtual form of instruction and practice.

Q: Will students be able to participate in band?

A: As Band is also a curricular course, the students will still meet in the Auditorium during the scheduled Band period. Large group rehearsals will not occur. However, small group lessons or ensembles may continue. Additionally, the students may be utilizing a virtual form of instruction and practice.

Q: How will special education services be implemented in the blended and remote models?

A: The IEP team will determine how services will be implemented for students who require special education and related services. Services can be delivered in person in Levels 1 and 2 of the Camp Hill School District’s opening plan. If the district is closed for reasons related to COVID 19, services will be delivered remotely utilizing a combination of synchronous learning and asynchronous assignments. Decisions about SDIs will be made on an individual basis, with input from the family.

Q. If my child’s evaluation report stated that further testing was needed once school reopened, when and how will the testing be conducted?

A: Testing will resume once we are back in school. The psychologist will contact you with dates and times for you to bring your child in for testing. Please know we are following CDC guidelines during testing. Your child will need to wear a face covering. The parent will not be allowed in the building to wait for the student. The testing room will be disinfected, there will be table shields between the evaluator and student, and the evaluator will wear a face covering/shield during testing.

Q. What will remote learning days look like for my student?

A: Teachers will post all daily lessons and activities in Schoology. Lessons may include recorded instruction. Students are expected to log in daily to complete the lessons and activities. Login and completion of activities will count as attendance in the class for that day. Remote learning days will also include scheduled office hours/zoom lessons with their teachers. A schedule for these live sessions will be provided via Blackboard prior to the start of school on September 8.

Students who have opted for the blending learning model must log on to Schoology and complete the lessons provided by their teachers on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students have the option to participate in the live remote lessons offered by teachers on Tuesdays and Thursdays as well. Attendance at these sessions is not mandatory, but highly encouraged. Completion of the daily assignments is required. If students do not log on to Schoology on remote learning days and do not complete the assignments, they are considered absent and will not receive credit for the work assigned.

Students who have opted for the fully remote learning plan will follow along with the blended learners M-W F using Schoology. Students are expected to log on daily and complete all assignments and activities. Login and completion of activities will count as attendance in the class for that day. Tuesdays and Thursdays, teachers will provide live remote lessons for the remote learners. These live sessions are mandatory for the remote learners, and count as attendance for the day. A schedule for these live sessions will be provided via Blackboard prior to the start of school on September 8.

Q. When will my student receive his/her district issued Chromebook and other instructional materials?

A: The leadership team is developing a plan for the distribution of Chromebooks and instructional materials that it will communicate to families via Blackboard prior to the start of the school year on September 8.
