Activity Ideas A1: Papa Titioning Children use digit cards or the printable Number Cards to create or randomly choose a number to partition into tens and ones. For example, if a player created the number 62, they will win 7 points if they can points for each partition they can demonstrate and articulate (i.e. 6 tens and 2 ones, 5 tens and 12 ones, 4 tens and 22 ones, 3 tens and 32 ones, 2 tens and 42 ones, 1 ten and 52 ones, 0 tens and 62 ones). Children win a counter for each partition they create - the child with the most counters after 5 rounds wins that game.A2: Papa Titioning’s Target Board Aim: To be the first player to link three hexagons in any direction. You need: A set of counters and either a set of digit cards (including digits 0 to 9) or a set of 1 - 100 Number Cards. Rules: Children use digit cards or the printable Number Cards to create or randomly choose a number to partition into tens and ones. Children can put a counter on the board if they can partition the number they have been given in a way that means one part of that partition matches a number on the Target Board. For example, if 62 had been chosen and the number 40 was available on the board, the player could partition 62 into 40 and 22, saying, ‘I can partition 62 into 40 and 22, so I claim the number 40!’ Equally if 22 was available, they could use the same partition to claim that number. The first player to place three counters in a row wins that round.

Song OverviewThis song helps children understand and practice how to partition 2-digit numbers into combinations of tens and ones. (e.g. 42 = 3 tens and 12 ones). Papa Titioning is a lumberjack with big stacks of 10 logs and loose logs.

Did You Know?Partitioning 2-digit numbers into different combinations of 10s and 1s is the foundation for many calculation strategies. Here are two examples that feature partitioning. In the subtraction calculation, 75 is partitioned into 6 tens and 15 ones. In the mental strategy for calculation (sometimes known as ‘Find the Hunk’), 72 is partitioned into the Hunk and the Chunk. The Hunk is defined as being 10 times the divisor of 4, so in this case 72 is partitioned into 4 tens and 32 ones. This partitioning makes calculating the quotient (the answer in a division calculation) relative easy.Partitioning into different combinations of tens and ones relies on another important piece of mathematics - the understanding that 1 ten is 10 ones, and that 2 tens is 20 ones etc. The extends to the understanding that 1 hundred = 10 tens = 100 ones. (As modelled in the song ‘One Hundred’)

Top Tips (using online Video Presentation or Full Track mp3)

T1: Use a Resource Provide each child with a resource to use whilst singing the song and following the video presentation. You can print out and cut up the Base 10 images or you could use 10p and 1p coins to represent the stacks of 10 logs and the loose logs in the story.T2: Papa Titioning! Pause the video at 0:37. Papa Titioning has 74 logs. How many different ways can we partition 74, into different combinations of tens and ones? Jump to 1:00. The video shows us 4 options. Are there any more? How many in partitions in total? How many would there be if we had 84 or 54? Is there a pattern?

1 ten = 10 ones

I love to see him chopping wood I love to hear him sing So *Monday I went down to see Old Papa Titioning. When he laid his axe to rest, He said the words that I like best, “Child, would you move these logs with Papa Titioning?

(Said) There’s AB today!”

“Child, if you take (AB-B), I will carry B! Child if you take (AB-B-10), I’ll take 10 and B! Child if you take (AB-B-20), I’ll take (B+20)! Child if you take (AB-B-30) logs, I’ll take (B+30)!

(Said) “Thank you child, that’s Papa Titioning!”
