Because YouKnow WhatMatters Most

Welcome to Pearson Homeschool!

PreparationIt is always an exciting time when you get to open the box with your new curriculum. All of the books and materials are colorful, the pages are crisp and they are fi lled with the possibilities of the coming year. The anticipation of using the books and teaching your child is new and fresh. Like the air after a spring shower, it is invigorating. You can’t wait until you can get started.

Open the bundle of materials, fl ip through the pages of each book, take in how they look and feel. Get familiar with all of the components. Let your child share in the excitement and catch the enthusiasm you have for starting this new adventure. These will be your companions over the course of the next year.

Once you get familiar with the material, you may experience the overwhelming feeling that is common to homeschool parents: “How will I ever cover all of this material?” You may be fl ooded with insecurities that you don’t know or remember the subject or content. All of these are normal thoughts and experiences for anyone who has homeschooled.

Remember the value of the journey you are on. Focus on the reasons you chose to homeschool in the fi rst place, the daily interaction with your child, and teaching them how to learn. As the tutor, you as the parent don’t have to know all of the material. It’s fi ne to learn it with your child as you go through the material together. You are the guide for your child as you journey with them through the learning process.

Prentice Hall Writing and Grammar helps develop and reinforce skills through aneasy-to-follow, three-part chapter organization:

Writing – Walks your child through each step of the writing process with guided writing instruction

Grammar, Usage, and Mechanics – Ensures mastery with comprehensive instruction, practice, and application.

Academic and Workplace Skills – Helps your child develop real-world workplace competencies.

OverviewThe Prentice Hall Writing and Grammar homeschoolbundle includes the following components: • Student Handbook • Teacher’s Edition

Using the MaterialsPearson curriculum materials are thoughtfully planned to present the subject in a way that is engaging. Each lesson builds upon itself, while providing you with the fl exibility to make it your own.

Using the Teacher’s EditionThe Teacher’s Edition corresponds to the Student Handbook. To help guide you, refer to the page numbers next to the red “H” at the bottom of each page. This displays the corresponding page in your child’s text. The Teacher’s Edition also supports the regular student edition, but you should follow along with the Handbook Alignment references by looking for the “H” icon.

Using the Student HandbookThe Student Handbook provides guided instruction that covers hands-on strategies for every step of the writing process, and comprehensive support in areas where additional help is needed. It is organized into three sections. First, your child will learn Writing through guided instruction of the writing process. Next, your child moves on to instruction and practice of Grammar, Usage, and Mechanics. Finally, Academic and Workplace Skills allows your child to apply their skills to real-world scenarios.

The beginning of the text has additional features you should review to help your child throughout the course, including:

• Go Online – web codes for direct access to online videos, quizzes, tests, and other material. Simply: • Go to: www.phschool.com • Enter the Web Code • Click Go!

Each chapter presents new ideas with supporting examples, along with targeted exercises, to help drive your child’s understanding. To further enrich learning, the margins of the text provide Learn More opportunities for the current objectives, as well as Critical Viewing for visual, targeted support of the current skill.

Lesson PlansLesson plans are important to a successful homeschool environment. They help keep you on track, progress through the material and provide a steady structure for teaching your child. It is important to plan out your lessons but remember, lesson plans are a guide. You should leave room to adapt to your child and adjust the plan to ensure he or she understands the material. The objective is to have a tool you can use to watch your child progress and master the material you present over the school year.

Before you begin your lesson plan, review the Student Handbook and Teacher’s Edition to see how the material is structured. There are a number of items to consider when preparing your plan. How many days per week will you have school? Do you plan to have extended breaks for the holidays or vacations? The number of children you have and their ages will affect how and what you can do as well.

Lesson plans in general should have certain vital components. A suggested list would include some or all of the following: • the portion of text covered during the lesson • main ideas of the lesson • key concepts • questions to ask • activities to do • potential fi eld trip ideas • assignments given • materials and resources needed

Each chapter of the Teacher’s Edition gives you multiple lesson plan options. Depending on your child’s grasp of the material you can follow the In-Depth Lesson Plan, the Accelerated Lesson Plan, or create your own lesson plan by following the Options for Adapting Lesson Plan. Each plan will outline the time required for the lesson and the focus of the lesson. Throughout each chapter, refer to the margins in your Teacher’s Edition to review the lesson objectives, student engagement ideas, and step-by-step teaching guide. You will also fi ndon-going assessment to measure your child’s understanding of the material to ensure skills are learned.

In the Grammar, Usage, and Mechanics section of the course, administer the Diagnostic Test prior to beginning each chapter. This allows you to identify any areas where extra instruction will be benefi cial, and to direct your child to the relevant pages in the text for additional exercises for practice and review.

Review the chapter objectives and teaching guide prior to beginning instruction. By familiarizing yourself with the section you can identify relevant and engaging examplesthat will resonate with your child as you progress through the course.

Adapt the Curriculumto Fit your SituationOne of the great benefi ts of homeschooling is that everything you teach can be personalized to fi t your child. Prentice Hall Writing and Grammar makes it easy to personalize instruction with lessons relevant to your child and tailored to their individual learning style.

PacingWhether your child needs in-depth instruction or learns at an advanced pace, Prentice Hall Writing and Grammar fi ts their style. With 30-34 lessons per text, your child will cover about one chapter per week including review and assessment. This allows time for supplemental language arts instruction as well as fi eld trips to further your child’s education.

Teaching is EverywhereEach unit has several ideas for engaging your child. You can include favorite activities and interests into the lessons. Relate them to your child’s favorite sports, toys, and interests to keep them engaged. Incorporate favorite novels, magazines, and newspaper articles into the curriculum and build in writing exercises. By combining writing and grammar with other subjects, you demonstrate to your child how subjects are integrated.

As you progress along the journey, you will have moments of frustration and moments that make it all worthwhile. Remember to keep it in perspective. Homeschool parents live for those moments when their children are most teachable. You will know when those moments happen as you can see the light go on, they really get it. Cherish those times and use them as the fuel to motivate you through the tough times.
