WELCOME TO THE COMMUNITY

Dear Parents and Guardians

On behalf of our staff and students, I warmly welcome you and your family into the Sacred Heart

Community and hope that the experiences ahead will be enriching and positive ones.

We recognise that our school continues the education begun in the home and I invite you to become

involved in the education of your child at Sacred Heart School.

It is important for a child to see that parents and teachers work harmoniously in his or her education

and development. This will assist to satisfy his or her need for security and consistency.

I invite you to be an active participant in your child’s and other children’s learning. There are many

ways that you can do this. Please feel free to discuss ways we can utilise your gifts in the community.

As a Catholic school, we strive to continue to develop your child’s faith through instruction, example

and participation in liturgy and traditions of the Catholic Church.

We are committed to values of trust, honesty, equality, love, respect and justice permeating all areas

of our curriculum.

We aim for our students to develop a sense of belonging within a community based upon trust and

mutual respect. It is important that this is modelled for the children by staff and parents.

At Sacred Heart, your child will be educated in a caring, Christian environment where each child is

valued for his or her own abilities and will be encouraged and challenged to strive to reach his or her

highest potential.

This handbook has been designed to assist you as being a full member of our school community.

Please let the school know if there is any other information that you would find helpful that could be

included in this booklet by sending an email to [email protected]

I trust that this will be the first of many happy and productive years at Sacred Heart School.

Yours sincerely,

Mr Brian Martin

Principal

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS

As a Catholic school we work in partnership with parents to incorporate and model Gospel values into all life

situations and to achieve excellent academic outcomes.

Therefore, we:

o provide opportunity for parents to be involved in their child’s faith development and sacramental

preparation through faith development sessions;

o encourage and value parental participation in many activities including classroom activities,

excursions, Education Board , Parent Association or other ways that we will create together;

o listen to ideas, suggestions and concerns of parents and, where possible, act upon their

recommendations;

o conduct regular parent teacher interviews and reporting opportunities;

o provide assistance and referral suggestions for specialist assistance;

o communicate through fortnightly online newsletters, children’s diaries and informal and formal

meetings.

We endeavour to create a community where Christian values are encouraged – by being lived.

This means we:

o treat the people in our school with gentleness and courtesy;

o welcome newcomers;

o encourage creativity;

o look for non-violent solutions to our problems and endeavour to create peace in school;

o develop in the children, a respect for each other, for property, school buildings, equipment, etc.

o are happy to celebrate our thanks to God for our world and our people publicly – through Masses,

paraliturgies and prayer;

o develop the skills children need to contribute meaningfully to their rapidly changing society;

o provide excellence in the teaching we offer and the effort we expect from the children;

o Give children knowledge of, and pride in their heritage.

o

TEACHING AND LEARNING

Children learn best when:

o their basic needs and rights are being met

THEREFORE we provide active pastoral care.

o they are valued as individuals

THEREFORE as teachers we are approachable and we welcome

children’s questions and conversation by recognizing, accepting and

supporting their differences.

o they are in a supportive environment

THEREFORE we provide opportunities for them to learn co-

operatively, e.g. taking turns, listening.

o they have opportunities to experience success

THEREFORE –

o we provide activities and opportunities which match their abilities

o we support and encourage

o we set attainable goals and encourage students to set their goals

o we endeavour to build a ‘success’ component into learning experiences.

o they are expected to learn

THEREFORE we create an atmosphere where they are encouraged to achieve ‘realistic’ levels of skills and

understanding and are guided to achieve their potential and experience intrinsic rewards for their efforts.

o there is respect for teachers

THEREFORE teachers need to act in the manner that promotes and values mutual respect.

o they are taught explicitly

THEREFORE teachers provide explicit teaching, clearly stated learning outcomes, demonstrations,

explanations, revision and feedback (when and where appropriate).

o they are realistically challenged and motivated by age and interest appropriate activities, taking into

account what they already know, including their home and cultural environment

THEREFORE we will question and converse to establish previous knowledge, experiences and misconceptions.

Teachers will provide opportunities to confront and discuss alternatives by –

o careful and regular planning at grade levels within Foundation to 6 curriculum

o allowing time for students to absorb information and reflect on these insights

o visiting and revisiting learning situations until understandings are established

o provide a variety of stimulating teaching approaches and resources across the curriculum to engage

and challenge students in line with Contemporary Learning philosophy.

o their various learning styles are recognized and they are involved in and exposed to a wide variety of

learning experiences

THEREFORE teachers will provide opportunities for them to be actively involved in problem solving, decision-

making, analysing and evaluating, within a range of curriculum areas.

Through a broad, effective curriculum using innovative, challenging approaches students are stimulated to

become independent thinkers who are able to listen critically and justify their own opinion with confidence.

Self-belief and emotional wellbeing are valued in the school community. These learning areas are based on

the Australian Curriculum / AusVELS.

Our Religious Education Program informs children of Gospel values and leads them in the integration of these

values in their life experiences.

SACRAMENTAL PROGRAMS

The school staff and Parish Priest work with parents to prepare children to

receive the sacraments of Reconciliation Year 3, Eucharist (First

Communion) Year 4 and Confirmation Year 6.

CLASS MASSES and PARALITURGIES

Masses

Each year, students attend one Mass with their class group and also one

Mass with their level, the Foundation students have a Welcome Mass (on

a Sunday) at the end of the year to which the new Foundation students are

invited. Students also attend whole school Masses on special occasions

such as the Feast of the Sacred Heart

Paralitugies

Class Paralitugies are held twice a year – one per semester, in the child’s

classroom. This paraliturgy usually reflect the RE topic being covered in the

class. The Paraliturgy is put together by the children, they decide on the

theme, the music, readings and setting up of the Sacred space, they invite their parents and send a welcome

committee to bring the parents to the classroom.

The CLaSS (Children’s Learning and Success Strategy) model is followed for literacy development. This consists

of a two hour learning block each day for reading and writing. There is focused teaching in small groups and

co-operative learning groups to ensure developmental learning to meet specific individual needs. Trained

parent helpers and teacher aides support teachers in the classroom for this program.

One of the fundamental beliefs is that all children can succeed if given the appropriate support, experiences

and opportunities.

The Reading Recovery Program provides carefully planned assistance for students who do not meet reading

standards by the end of Foundation.

Student progress in all areas of the curriculum is very carefully monitored and assessed from Foundation

through to Level 6.

Of prime importance in the education of students at Sacred Heart school is the development of skills and

competency in language, literacy and numeracy and technology. Children have access to internet, email and

many global learning resources through our computer lab, Multimedia room and classrooms.

Children work in co-operative groups where they support each other in their learning as they develop skills to

take responsibility for their own learning.

Page 11: PARENT HANDBOOK · 2017. 2. 25. · THEREFORE we create an atmosphere where they are encouraged to achieve Zrealistic levels of skills and understanding and are guided to achieve

Physical Education, Visual Arts, Performing Arts, and LOTE/Italian are taught by specialist teachers or level

rotational programs.

Physical Education skill development sessions are conducted each week followed by a further session where

these skills are practised in team games. In addition to the skill development program Foundation children

participate in a Perceptual Motor Program, years 1 and 2 in a Swimming program, years 3 and 4 in a

Gymnastics program and years 5 and 6 in a mixture of major games against house teams, interschool

competition and specialist coaches conducting lessons in badminton, volley ball, hip hop dance, Tae Bo and

Karate.

The house teams compete against each other in our Annual Sports Days.

SOCIAL SKILLS PROGRAM

It is widely recognised that children learn best when they are happy. Good peer relationships and social

acceptance are important for the well-being and academic success of the children. Growing and learning

involves taking “safe” risks. Through the Social Skills Programs we teach children in our school how to make

choices and act responsibly. They develop self-esteem, resilience and the ability to try new things confidently.

In a safe and supportive environment across the school, we foster the values of care and compassion, doing

your best, freedom, honesty and trustworthiness, integrity, respect, responsibility, understanding, tolerance

and inclusion, as well as a fair go, as identified in the National Values for Australian Schooling Framework. We

relate this to our Gospel values.

Sacred Heart is a KidsMatter school. KidsMatter is an Australian Primary Schools Mental Health Initiative. It

aims, in conjunction with other government initiatives, to improve the mental health and wellbeing of primary

school students. At Sacred Heart our main program that works alongside the KidsMatter initiative is 'Bounce

Back' – A Wellbeing and Resilience Program which is a preventative, whole school social and emotional

learning program.

We also use “Friendly Kids, Friendly Classrooms” by Helen McGrath, as a social skills program which develops

ways of behaving which aim to provide strategies which promote successful classroom and playground

interaction.

The above programs will be evaluated this year through the continuing development of ‘Kidsmatter’.

In order to create a safe and supportive learning environment we have Assertive Discipline Plans in our

classrooms and in our play areas. We have the same rules across the school, in the classrooms and in the yard

so that children are clear about their expectations / consequences / rewards.

SPECIALIST TEACHER PROGRAMS Visual Arts Specialist Teacher Program

Each week all students F - 6 are part of an extensive skill development program.

The main areas of art education are Masks, Drawing, collage, Painting, Threads and Textiles, Construction and

Modelling. The elements of art (line, shape, colour, pattern and texture) are explored and applied to all the

areas of art. A bi-annual Art Show is held where every child exhibits several pieces of work. 2015 IS THE NEXT

YEAR FOR THE Art Show

L O T E – Italian Specialist Teacher Program

Italian is taught from F - 6 in a one hour lesson per week. The program develops an awareness and appreciation

of another culture through drama, story-telling, poetry, rhymes, songs, dances and cultural activities.

The aims of the Languages Pathway program at Sacred Heart Primary School are:

to provide instruction to develop broad communication skills such as listening, speaking, reading and

writing

to develop cognitive skills and literacy skills in the Languages Pathway to promote intercultural

awareness and an understanding of different cultures and how they have enriched our lives in

Australia today

Physical Education Specialist Teacher Program

Across the school the physical education program consists of two sections. Each week there is an hour session

focusing on fundamental skill development and classroom teachers take a second hour focusing on the

application of these skills in minor and major games.

There is a special focus at each level:

Foundation: Perceptual Motor Program

Year 1 & 2: Swimming, daily program for a fortnight

Year 3 & 4: gymnastics weekly program over a term

Year 5 & 6: Interschool sport program weekly over two terms

CAMP PROGRAM

An annual camp is a part of the Grade 5 / 6 program and is related to the integrated curriculum units, personal

development and outdoor education aspects of the curriculum. This is not to be regarded as an optional extra

but is part of the year 5 &6 curriculum.

The focus for the camp alternates on a 2 year cycle. Year 1: Outdoor Education Skills and team building/co-

operative skills, Year 2: An aspect of Australian History and Civics and Citizenship.

CIRCLE TIME

Circle Time is a restorative practice that aims to assist children to resolve problems and celebrate success. The

children ae given the opportunity to work on friendship building, cooperation and self-esteem in a supportive,

positive atmosphere where their feelings, thoughts and opinions are sought and respected.

EXCURSIONS AND VISITING GROUPS

As an integral and enriching part of the curriculum, children are

involved in excursions and incursions (visiting groups) during the

year. Notice is given and written permission is required for all

excursions. Excursion costs are kept to a minimum and are included

in the levies. Parents are at times required to accompany classes on

excursions, teachers will inform you when this is necessary.

For safety reasons toddlers are unable to accompany the groups on

excursions. Children are not placed in a group with their parent as

supervisor.

INTER SCHOOL SPORT

Students in Year 5 & 6 are involved in interschool sport with local Catholic and public schools during the year.

This is organised by the school staff and again we seek the assistance of parents for the program. This program

allows the children to develop good sportsmanship and to challenge their skills with a wider variety of

competitors in the various sports that are played.

INFORMATION COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY

We offer a well-equipped Technology/Multimedia Centre with contemporary hardware and software so that

our children are prepared for technological changes and know how to access learning through a variety of

tools. A network of laptops, Ipads and a computer lab. A range of filming and recording equipment is available

for classroom use as well as a multimedia room with green screen and lights for film making.

Page 14: PARENT HANDBOOK · 2017. 2. 25. · THEREFORE we create an atmosphere where they are encouraged to achieve Zrealistic levels of skills and understanding and are guided to achieve

P.M.P. (PERCEPTUAL MOTOR PROGRAM)

Foundation children are taken through sequentially designed developmental activities which greatly assist fine

and gross motor skills in the development and promote language skills. Assistance from parents is vital for the

effective implementation of the program. Parents are involved in setting up the equipment and assisting the

class teachers with small groups. This program operates each week in the hall and parents from all levels are

invited to assist the foundation teachers with this program.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR EXPECTATIONS

Students are expected to:

o Recognise that behaviour is a personal choice and each individual is responsible for their own

behaviour.

o recognise that everyone is accountable for their own actions

o Follow directions

o Treat all property with care

o Listen to the designated speaker

o Communicate appropriately

o Move around safely

Teachers / Significant Adults are expected to:

o model appropriate behaviour

o follow the procedures set out in this document

o not show aggression through action or voice

o never use corporal punishment

Parents are expected to:

o support the school in its endeavour to promote the wellbeing of all

o approach the school staff if they have a concern

In order to create a safe and supportive learning environment we have Positive Behaviour Plans in our

classrooms. These are consistent across the school and are clearly displayed and referred to often. They consist

of three parts:

o rules that children must follow at all times to ensure safety and harmony;

o positive recognition that children will receive for following the rules;

o consequences which result when children choose to not follow the rules.

Discipline Plans are a fair and consistent way of establishing a positive environment.

SPECIALIST SUPPORT STAFF

Professional staff work within our school to provide additional support in the areas of counselling and

assessment which assists us in developing the best possible program for all students.

If required, your child may access the services of:

o psychologists

o speech pathologists

o visiting teachers (hearing impairment, vision impairment, physical/chronic health impairment)

o English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D)/New arrivals school advisers.

Please discuss with your child’s teacher if there is a need for you to access these services.

SCHOOL RULES

The school rules are based on the premise that everyone has the

right to be ‘Safe, Happy and to Learn’ and each person must

behave in a manner which allows this right to happen for everyone

GENERAL INFORMATION

ABSENTEEISM

Students are expected to attend school unless

o The child is unwell

o The child has an infectious disease

o The child has an injury preventing movement around school.

o The child is going with his or her parents on a family holiday which cannot be arranged in school

vacations. This should be arranged with the Principal prior to the absence.

Regular school attendance has a significant role in shaping both school-related and later life outcomes. While

attending school, children gain academic and social skills that are essential for ongoing academic and social

success. If they do not attain these skills, they require extra help to catch up and are at higher risk of poor

academic performance and of dropping out of secondary school (Lamdin, 1996; Myers, 2000; National

Centre for Education Statistics (NCES), 2003; Rumberger & Thomas, 2000).

ABSENCE NOTES. It is a legal requirement that a written explanation for a child’s absence for a day or any part

thereof is sent to the class teacher. This needs to follow even if a phone call has been made. The written reason

needs to be kept on record for seven years.

ACCEPTABLE USE OF TECHNOLOGY

Acceptable use of technology including internet, intranet computers and Ipads. All children and families are

required to sign an agreement that outlines the responsible use of digital devices. Anyone who breaches these

guidelines lose their Technology privileges for a limited time.

AFTER SCHOOL

Children are NOT to play in the playground after school.

Children are to be collected from the class teacher and they are then to remain with their parents so that the

teacher on duty can supervise adequately. Any parents who wish to remain after 3:30pm and supervise their

children in the playground and on the play equipment are welcome to do so.

Any children who are not collected by 3:30pm will be sent to the office. Parents are contacted by the teacher

on duty and taken to the Out of School Hours Care Program.

AFTER SCHOOL MUSIC PROGRAM

Creative Music School conducts a music program on school premises weekly. The after school program offers

hands-on tuition in keyboard, guitar, violin and other instruments.

ASSEMBLY

Assembly is on Monday afternoons at 2:30 pm. See calendar for the assembly timetable. Each class takes turns

to lead the school in prayer and showcase their learning. Parents are most welcome to attend any assemblies.

Assemblies include:

o Celebration of birthdays

o Learning from presenting class

o Achievement awards

o Special messages

BICYCLES

The National Safety Council recommends that children under nine years of age ride their bikes only when

accompanied by an adult. Basic bicycle safety is the responsibility of parents.

Children must wear their helmets. Bicycle racks are provided and bicycles need to be locked while on the

premises

Further information: http://www.kidsafevic.com.au

BOOK CLUB

This is an optional, regular feature of the school program. Children are issued with Scholastic Book Club forms,

from which students make their own purchases. The completed form and money must be enclosed in an

addressed envelope and handed to the school office.

CAR PARKING

Please be aware of parking restrictions around the school. There are permit parking only areas for teachers in

both Davey and Mora Avenue. Monash Council parking officers patrol the surrounding streets of the school

on a regular basis and will book any vehicles incorrectly parked.

The parking of cars and other vehicles in and around the school grounds is a daily necessity, but also raises a

number of safety and traffic issues that must be well managed. Please be patient and mindful of the safety of

all children over small inconvenience to time. Consider parking further and walking a short distance.

CHESS

A Lunchtime chess club at Sacred Heart is offered for students in Years 4 - 6.

Playing chess in school helps students achieve many learning outcomes faster and more effectively.

Not only is chess fun and exciting it develops skills such as; problem solving, forward planning, lateral, logical

and sequential thinking as well as memory, visualisation and verbalisation.

CLASS PLACEMENT

Towards the end of the school year staff make initial placements of students in classes for the coming year,

according to a set of clear and fairly managed criteria. Please note that the school is well aware of the

individual needs of each child and will consider these accordingly in class placement.

Classes are re-grouped each year and students are mixed carefully taking into account a fair distribution of

gender, academic ability, individual, social, emotional and behavioural needs and students who would benefit

by being kept together or separated. Concerns already presented to teachers and the principal will also be

taken into consideration. If parents have any concerns regarding the class placement of their child for the next

year these should be made in writing addressed to the Principal. It is not appropriate to approach teachers or

any other staff member regarding these matters.

Requests should only be made in exceptional circumstances and not on an annual basis. Parents must provide

sound educational reasons to support their request. Personal requests for specific teachers will not normally

be considered. While any requests will be seriously considered, they may not be able to be granted. There is

a long, arduous, professional, non-emotive process to make this selection so as to ensure the best learning

environment for each child. Ultimately the final decision for placement of students rests with the principal.

Class lists are initially developed independent of who specific teachers may be. Thank you for your

understanding in this matter, and please be assured that we have your child’s interests at heart in all such

decisions.

COMMUNICATION

Effective communication helps us to better understand a person or situation and enables us to resolve differences, build trust and respect, and create environments where creative ideas, problem solving, affection, and caring can flourish. Communication is not a one way street; it requires nurturing and takes many forms. Both parties need to be proactive and be prepared to engage with each other. We invite parents to share their concerns with the principal, deputy or class teachers.

Diaries

Diaries are a major means of communication for all children from Years 3 to 6.

Parent’s signature and comments on work is seen as a valuable link between home and school.

Requirements of each class teacher regarding the use of diaries will be outlined in each level Information

Booklet.

Newsletter

The fortnightly Newsletter, containing information about school events, is posted on the school website on

alternate Fridays. This is the main means of communication from school to home. An email is sent to remind

parents once the newsletter has been uploaded.

Parent Forums

One initiative to aid in building communication is ‘parent forums’. Parent forums give parents the opportunity

to have input into key issues and look for potential solutions to problems. These forums are advertised in the

newsletter and are on the calendar. All parents are welcome to contribute to these sessions. Other ways the

school communicates with you is through newsletters and year level booklets.

Parent/Teacher/Student Meetings

o Parent/Teacher Information sharing sessions are held in the first few weeks of term one where

parents meet with the teacher to share information with the teacher about their child.

o Parent/Teacher/Student Meetings are held Term 2 where all parents are expected to attend.

o Term 4 meetings are optional and held for those parents who have specific issues to discuss

or vice versa.

Parent Association Newsletter

o The Parent Association produce a newsletter twice a term and it is available on the school

website. An email is sent to remind parents once the newsletter has been uploaded.

http://www.shoakleigh.catholic.edu.au/parents_association.html

Reports

Reports are sent home in JUNE and DECEMBER. The report represents a well-considered evaluation of the

progress and development your child has made during the year. The report is used in conjunction with the

Student Portfolio which contains a snapshot of the work that the student has covered, along with the

Parent/Teacher/Student Meetings conducted throughout the year.

EARLY DISMISSAL

A parent wishing to collect a child before the end of the school day, must first report to the office and sign the

“Early Dismissal Book”, before collecting the child from the classroom. This should be kept to a minimum and

only leave early for medical appointments or important family events.

It would be appreciated if a child is collected or returned at the beginning or end of the break.

Recess 10:55 to 11:30am and Lunch 1:40 to 2:20pm

If children are to be collected by people other than their parents, the school must be notified of this

arrangement to the classroom teacher and the school office please.

Parents wishing to access school buildings after 8:45 am and before 3:20 pm will need to collect a key from

the office. Access is only via the single gate in Mora Avenue as all other gates are locked.

HARASSMENT/BULLYING

At Sacred Heart, Oakleigh, we live by Jesus’ commandment to ‘Love one another as I have loved you’. We

believe each person has the right to be safe respected, valued and nurtured at all times. In addition, each

person has the right to feel listened to and to be treated with dignity. Bullying in any form will not be tolerated.

Our Anti-Bullying Policy outlines reporting strategies for bullying behaviour. If you believe bullying is taking

place, please report it to the teacher. The school adopts a no-blame approach to encourage early reporting

of bullying, deal with bullying incidents and support both the bullied and the bully.

http://www.bullyingnoway.gov.au/

LATE ARRIVAL

If you arrive after 8:45am, you must report to the office and complete the “Late Arrivals “form before

delivering your child to class.

LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SERVICES

All children have the opportunity to borrow books from the library during regular class sessions. Please

encourage your children to become regular library users as this will have a big influence on their language

development. Please supply a bag to protect their library book when carrying it to and from school. A plastic

shopping bag is not suitable. Books lost or damaged through negligence will need to be replaced by the

parents.

LUNCHES

Healthy School lunches

At Sacred Heart we have an emphasis on Healthy School lunches

Morning recess - children may have fruit, vegetables, a sandwich or plain

biscuits and cheese (or similar healthy food).

Second lunch - children may have sandwiches or dry biscuits, salad (or

similar healthy food), fruit and a healthy treat.

It is important for their development and concentration that children

have a healthy breakfast and an appropriate, nutritious diet during the

school day.

LOLLIES, CHIPS, SALTY BISCUIT SHAPES AND CHOCOLATE COATED BISCUITS ARE NOT PERMITTED AT SCHOOL

Perishable foods are not suitable for lunch as refrigeration is not available. Yoghurt containers with twist tops

can be brought to school but must be kept next to an icepack. Other types of yoghurt are not to be brought

to school due to the potential spillage.

For the safety of children who may have severe nut allergies (anaphylaxis) please ensure that nuts and nut

products are not brought into the school. This includes peanut butter, nuts, Nutella etc.

Children are encouraged to have plastic pop top water bottles.

Tuckshop - Classroom Cuisine

This ‘online tuckshop’ service is available on Mondays and Thursday and is ordered online. Orders are taken

until 8:30am on the day. The lunches are delivered to the school by 10:45am.

lunches are in the calendar

MEDICAL

Anaphylactic or Severe Allergies

Medication / Auto injector e.g. Epipen must be given to the school and marked clearly with student name and

directions. An Allergy treatment form must be completed and signed by doctor regularly and uploaded to

CAREMONKEY, or given to the school office.

Parents are responsible to ensure that the Epipen or medication is not out of date.

Children, who are asthmatic and use inhalers must bring them to school, know how to use them correctly and

have them accessible at all times. Please clearly label the inhaler with the student’s name and include any

specific instructions

CareMonkey

CareMonkey is an innovative parent controlled electronic medical form for schools, clubs and other groups

with a duty of care. It’s an electronic version of the paper based forms you’re always having to fill in for

excursions, camps, enrolments, etc. It provides parent’s the opportunity to update medical information

promptly and accurately while providing the school with instant access to the emergency information provided

by you. The CareMonkey app is used in the best interest of the children whilst also reducing the burden on

parents to fill out the same information on multiple forms throughout the year.

Parents can use a PC, laptop, tablet or smart phone to enter the details including:

o Emergency contacts

o Medical contacts

o Medical checklist including asthma, allergies, seizures, diabetes

o Health and ambulance insurance details

o Notes and other care instructions from parents

As a parent we will send you an email from the CareMonkey system inviting you to enter the details for your

child in an electronic medical form. From the schools perspective, this information will only be accessible by

the relevant staff for your child. However, if you choose, you will also be able to share this information with

anyone else you trust with your child's care - their grandparents, their child-minder, their sports club, etc.

In 2015 the school will move towards using CareMonkey for permission forms for excursions and events

Head Lice

It is extremely important that the class teacher or office is notified if lice are present so other parents can be

alerted to check children’s hair. Without combined, immediate action head lice will spread very quickly.

Parents are informed only at the level at which they exist. Should you discover lice or eggs in your child’s hair

please inform the teacher immediately and begin treatment. Should head lice be found in your child‘s hair at

school you will be asked to start treatment immediately.

Children will be excluded from school until head lice have been treated.

Illness/ Injuries

*SICK CHILDREN SHOULD NOT BE AT SCHOOL

If your child is ill, he/ she should be kept at home for quick recovery and to avoid spreading the illness.

Minor injuries or illnesses which occur during the day are normally attended to at school.

In more serious situations every endeavour is made to contact either parent or the emergency contact to

arrange for the child to be collected from the school. It is imperative that all phone numbers are kept up to

date in CareMonkey.

Medical notes are given to students to inform you of any injuries.

For all head injuries, even minor ones, parents are notified as soon as possible

IN AN EMERGENCY AN AMBULANCE WILL BE CALLED

TENNIS LESSONS

Tennis lessons are offered once a week before school by MlC Hot Shots Tennis. It is a fun way for kids to learn

how to play tennis. Smaller courts, nets, racquets and low compression balls make learning easy and gives

younger players the chance to serve, rally and score right from the first time they play.

More information is available from the office.

UNIFORMS - NEW

Uniforms are purchased from Primary School Wear, 15 Mills St Cheltenham. Check with your classroom

Information Booklet in 2015 so that you know the physical education and sports day for your child. We ask

that you support the school in setting expectations of your child that they will wear the school uniform.

UNIFORMS - SECOND HAND

The Second Hand Uniform Shop is operated by parent volunteers. Families are able to either donate, have

their uniforms sold on consignment or swap ‘like for like’. Clothing that is not on consignment is made

available for pastoral care when the Principal deems necessary.

The shop provides families within the school community a viable and affordable alternative to purchasing new

clothing and teaches our children that clothing is ‘reusable’ and that we are a Green alternative.

Donations

o All donated clothing is to be left at either the school office or the Uniform Shop during hours of

operation.

o All clothing should be laundered and in good condition.

o Items will be priced based on quality and like items. (Larger sized clothing will not be more expensive

than smaller sizes).

o Shop Volunteers will give shoppers a price guideline. For example, short sleeved polo shirts are

between $5.00 and $8.00.

See shop hours in the school calendar. If a parent/carer is unable to attend during this time, contact can be

made directly with the Uniform Shop Volunteer(s) to enquire about stock availability and a suitable time to

meet.

VISITORS TO THE SCHOOL

All visitors including parents who come onto school grounds between the hours of 8:40am and 3.20pm MUST

report to the office, sign the Visitors Book and wear the Visitors Pass whilst on the school premises.

WET / EXTREME WEATHER

Extreme weather is generally defined as extreme heat, rain, lightning, dust, wind, cold or any other condition

that is considered to be unsuitable for students and staff to take part in outdoor activities.

An announcement is made after a decision by the Principal or the person in charge as to whether there will be

a WET / EXTREME WEATHER program. Children will be engaged in indoor activities during an EXTREME

WEATHER day timetable.

Excursions, camps, scheduled sport, physical education or other outside activities may need to be reorganised

or rescheduled should EXTREME weather be predicted.

PARENTS AND SCHOOL–WORKING TOGETHER

School Education Board

The School Education Board is an elected body of parents and teacher representatives who act in an advisory

capacity to assist the parish priest and principal on matters related to the operation of the school and

development of policies.

The Sacred Heart School Education Board is made up of interested parents and teachers who review and

discuss the issues that affect the life of our school.

Parents’ Association

All parents at Sacred Heart are automatically members and are warmly invited to attend meetings. Watch out

for the monthly Newsletters online. These detail meetings, social events and when assistance needed. We

have a dedicated group of parents who take on executive roles in the P.A. (Parent Association)

This group meets each term in the evenings to organize social events for students, families and parents.

Generally the aims of the parents Association are to:

o develop a sense of community within the school

o to plan and coordinate parent run events and activities to be held throughout the school year

o to raise funds, as requested by the Board

o to support and assist with school functions and activities as requested

A representative of the Parents Association is elected as a member of the School Education Board. This ensures

a consistency in approach between the School Education Board and the Parents Association.

Classroom Co-Ordinators

Each class has two parents who volunteer to liaise between the class teacher and class parents to facilitate

communication, clarify activities and organise class social functions. Classroom Co-ordinators also take

responsibility for Pastoral Care which includes welcoming new families, new babies and supporting families if

to wait to be asked - there are always things you can do.

A notice goes out first week of term for parents to register an interest.

Parent Helpers/ Volunteers

We greatly appreciate any time you can give to help out in the classroom, library, office, school excursions and

in other ways. Volunteers are actively encouraged to take part in school activities, and will be invited to do so

through the newsletter, written invitations and personal approaches, as well as informally through

conversation and opportunity.

Volunteers will not be required to carry out tasks with which they are uncomfortable or untrained.

A WORKING WITH CHILDREN check is required for all volunteers who assist as a helper in the school

community. Please feel free to discuss with the Principal or Deputy ways or new ways you can be a volunteer.

WORKING WITH CHILDREN CARD

As part of Catholic Education Commission Victoria (CECV) policy and Victorian Government requirements:

All Catholic school employees and contractors (other than qualified teaching staff, who are exempt as this is

part of VIT registration) are required to have a Working with Children Check (WWCC).

All parents who work with students, accompany students on excursions and camp will need to have this card

which determines these parents have no criminal records.

Please go online for details. http://www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au/

PREPARING YOUR CHILD FOR SCHOOL Skills that children need so they can learn and be happy at school can be divided into four areas:

Physical Development → Concerned with use and control of the body

Social Development → Getting along with others

Emotional Development → Concerned with feelings

Intellectual Development → Concerned with knowing and learning.

SKILLS NEEDED HOW TO ASSIST

Eating: Feed themselves, unwrap glad wrap, unscrew and screw drink lids, peel a piece of fruit, get drink from tap.

Have 'practice school lunches" at home. Let children get used to containers you have bought before bringing them to school.

Nose Wiping: For health reasons, it is important that children know when they need to blow their nose.

Teach children when and how to use a handkerchief and make sure they are in the habit of taking one to school.

Hand/Eye Co-ordination: This is the ability to direct hand and eye to work together. It is necessary for writing, cutting, ball handling, and drawing.

Encourage outdoor play and encourage children to try these ways of moving.

Basic Movements: Skills of walking, running, hopping and jumping will be needed for many activities.

Encourage children to pour water into containers, stack containers inside each other, draw with pencils, crayons, chalk, build with construction kits; throw and catch balls, hit balls with bats.

Toileting: Children will need to go to the toilet by themselves and undo buttons, zips, etc., flush toilet, wash hands and manage taps.

Encourage children to do these automatically. However, be prepared for the occasional accident when first at school. Alert teacher to any particular needs your child may have.

Dressing: Jumpers, shoes and socks will sometimes need to be removed.

Encourage children to dress themselves. If children cannot tie shoe laces, look for buckles or Velcro as alternative fasteners.

Sleep Children who are growing rapidly need plenty of sleep. Bedtime routines are necessary. Starting school is a tiring experience.

Choose a bedtime and discuss this with your child. Be firm about the regular bedtime and develop a routine e.g. Bath, story, bed, glass of milk. Allow at least half an hour between last T. V, program and lights out to allow child to settle. Take a few minutes each night for a story or cuddle and chat.
