A. Read the article about Mother Earth. List five direct quotations based on it and
then write them.
As human beings we will have to make some decisions, fast if we want to protect our
future. We all have basic needs and those needs include more than food, clothing and shelter.
Truth is, we cannot allow our desire for economic growth to blind us to the fact that global
warming is happening. It’s important that we take action to stop it before we destroy ourselves.
Global Warming is not New
Detractors love to remind us that global warming is not new--- it has been happening for
thousands of years—it happened before, when humans were not even around, and it will happen
again. That does not change the fact that we are responsible for accelerating in this time, and
we can undo the damage if we work hard enough. Recently, Time Magazine deemed the rapid
overall temperature incrase to be an emergency condition. Action needs to be taken. Now!
There is much that we as individuals can do to stop global warming. For one thing, we can
stop global warming by conserving energy. How can you conserve energy? Just join the office
car pool, walk or cycle instead of using your car for short journeys. Use public tansport. Fit low
energy bulbs in every room. Turn off appliances when they are not in use and turn the
thermostat one degree--- you probably won’t even notice it , but overtime, that one degree
difference will amount to allot of energy saved. Just imagine this. What if every single person
made changes like those? The result will be that the savings will be huge.
Another simple way to do your bit is to recycle—instead of letting rubbish end up in land
fill sites, or worse, be in incenerated , if you recycle it you reduce waste, and save on the
energy that wouyld have been needed to produce whatever the product was from raw materials.
Also, using eco –friendly fuels and vehicles will help .prevent global warming---at the
moment some eco-friendly options are more expensive than standard fuel, but in the long run
you will be saving immensely.
Think about it. If we actually used more solar wind and hydro power, the result would be
that we would greatly reduce our emissions. Some people dislike the idea of wind turbines, as
they look unsightly---but surely it is worth that cost, compared to what could happen if we
continue on the path we ar on.
There is no time like the present and the best time for action is now! We can still reduce
the damage, and maybe even repair some of it. There may still be hope.
B. Read the ff. excerpt from “Global Warming” in the Earth Observatoty
(http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/) and paraphrase the text.
1. Throughout its long history, Earth has warmed and cooled time and again. Climate has
changed when the planet received more or less sunlight due to subtle shifts in its orbit,
as the atmosphere or surface change, or when the Sun’s energy varied. But in the past
century, another force has started to influence Earth’s climate: humanity.
2. Global warming is the unusually rapid increase in Earth’s average surface temperature
over the past century primarily due to the greenhouse gases released by peopleburning fossil fuels.
3. In Earth’s history before the Industrial Revolution, Earth’s climate changed due to
natural causes unrelated to human activity. These natural causes are still in play
today, but their influence is too small or they occur too slowly to explain the rapid
warming seen in recent decades.

C. Read the ff. paragraph and make a summary.
Climate change to make 2010 the warmest year in record?
(An excerpt)
Posted by Ned Haluzan in Climate Change
Many climate change scientist predict that 2012 would be the hottest year in recorded
history. Many people will see that this will not be the case, especially given the very cold
winter in Europe and North America, but we must not forget that climate change is global
phenomenon, and therefore if we look at the global data we can see that period from January
to March was one of the seven warmest starts to the year on record.
The data gathered from NASA also shows that global temperatures, averaged over the
past 12 months, were the warmest 130 years. And the warming trend looks very likely to
continue for the rest of the year. According to Vicky Poe, head of climate change advice at
the Met Office, the year 2010 has therefore more than a 50% change of being the warmest
on record.
