What is known about the site background and/or history?

DeForest Park - Research

1. It has been estimated that the area known as DeForest Park, along with the surrounding community, has been home to varied indigenous people for up to 10, 000 years.

2. In the 16th

Century, Spanish explorer, Juan Rodrigues Cabrillo, arrived in 1542. The Spaniards working their way north, discovered the “Tongva Tribe” (People of Earth) who lived in populated areas in the Southern California

area. Two communities of the “Tevaaxaanga City”, the “Ahaugna” and the “Tibagna”, lived in the direct area now

known as DeForest Park. 3. Due to Spanish influence, tribal people became brutalized and enslaved in order to conform to Spanish cultural

and religious beliefs. Many killed due to disobedience and non-conformity. 4. Known for their peaceful ways the Gabrielino/Tongva Tribe continued to be subservient to their conquerors. But

as atrocities continued, they prayed to their god’s for help in vanquishing their invaders. Prayers to “Quador” (god of creation) and “Tolmalock” (goddess of the underworld) availed to no assistance.

5. A 25-year-old tribal medicine woman, “Toypurina”, had prayed and cursed the land and those who conquered it. On the night of October 25th, 1785, Toypurina led her force and attacked the San Gabriel Mission. But because a corporal of the guard had been informed of the revolt ahead of time, the Spanish mounted an ambush. When Toypurina arrived, she and some of her warriors were arrested. She was then subjected to a sham trial at the mission where no less than the governor of Alta California, Pedro Fages, sat in judgment. As punishments, she was exiled, baptized into Christianity, forced to divorce her Native husband and remarry a Spanish soldier and then eventually was buried at Mission San Juan Bautista."

6. Under Mexican control of the 18th

Century, the area again became subjected and murder, death, theft, and rape continued against those living and occupying the area.

7. Over the next two centuries, the area remained a wetlands area and remained undeveloped. 8. During the later part of the 1800’s into the 1900’s, interest in the area became evident. Planes for development of

residential and community business had begun. The Los Angeles River was diverted fro it’s original path and was deflected to where it is today. During this period, the Los Angeles Flood Control District, owned the wetlands area until 1976.

9. In 1976, the City of Long Beach acquired possession of the land and converted it into DeForest Park.

Paranormal Claims

1. Reports of cold wind gusts from no definable source. 2. Paranormal entity – Female ghoul or zombie – face and skin appear slouching over eyes while hands appear to

have skin stretched over boney hands. Entity wears raggy clothing and walks with a sideways “gant” through tree line. Has reputed chasing people during evening hours while growling and hissing.

3. Reports of “phantom voices” both individual and in groups. 4. Awful and strange isolated smells. 5. Sittings of “Shadow People” around buildings, trees and nature area. 6. Murders and rape in area. In 1992 Tayde Vasquez was raped and murdered in park. Jose Vardar Jr. allegedly

killed in trailer park north of park (unconfirmed). Findings in:

Conclusion: What are the preliminary findings & hypothesis of the investigation? How did you feel about the entire investigation? And please offer an explanation why you feel this way, if necessary. (Use another sheet of paper if necessary.) DIRECTORS REPORT: Although limited on time, the DeForest Park Investigation resulted in some interesting results. Five teams of neighborhood residents were given no information on the alleged paranormal activity reported in the area. However that is not to state that no prior information may have been obtained prior to the investigation. The teams were instructed in use of APRO equipment and proper process of handling an investigation. Once completed, teams were sent to varied locations within the park area. Upon reviewing photo and audible evidence, some anomalies did occur. Photo’s in general contained no real photographic anomalies (See EVIDENCE APPENDIX A), save three (See EVIDENCE APPENDIX B).

1. ORB – An orb that appears self laminated with basic structure. Photo examined using various processors to look at complexity, depth, and illumination factors. Orb also appeared to contain a “face”. Orb not consistent with dust, rain, or insect.

2. MIST/SMOKE – An unknown mist/smoke that was not seen during photography session. Humidity factors would dismiss ground fog. At time of photograph, no person(s) were smoking or in vicinity.

3. NIGHT VISION ANOMALY – Photo taken with night vision aperture in vicinity of sports complex which shows anomalies image of what appears to be an “entity”. Image appears to be half animal with human like head. Photo analysis shows structure, depth and physicality.

Photos could be result of Pareidolia. Pareidolia is a psychological phenomenon involving a stimulus (an image or a sound) wherein the mind perceives a familiar pattern of something where none actually exists. Upon reviewing EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomenon) recordings using the “P-387 Spirit Box”, several apparent responses were recorded to direct questions by team members (See EVIDENCE APPENDIX C). The recordings, using a radio scanning system, is believed to abilitiate entitles to draw power and to produce words using the devise. Analysis indicates a difference in tone and sound compared to background static and word fragments. Upon completion of the investigation, all groups reported some type of phenomenon taking place. Be it battery drain of varied equipment (phones, recorders, flashlights) and experiencing tactile occurrences such as cold spots and aromas (vanilla) in centralized location. CONCLUSION As the investigation was staged outdoors, the investigative teams being novices were subject to varied activity. Often as is the case, evidence can be corrupted by outside influences such as street noise, random talking, animals, and other undetermined factors. In the aspect of the photographic evidence, three anomalies were recorded. In most cases, this type of photographic evidence can be dismissed as dust, pollen, rain, mist, or insects. Temperature can also be a determining factor when it comes to mists (breath or smoke for those whom indulge in this activity). In regard to audio evidence, the “P-387 SPIRIT BOX” is one of the newest tools utilized by the paranormal community. The process requires scanning of multi radio channels at an accelerated rate. The process does and often, delivers responses that can be direct in nature to the question (as we believe we have in this case). The voice is often similar in sound, and or responds in a “tinny” fashion (again in this case). Is it proof positive? No. All research is done with variable points of accuracy. Regretfully, one team that was to use a recorder failed to follow the process as required or was unwilling. Three snippets were reordered with no results. It appeared to be “test” recordings. EVP’s are very important in this field of research. Questions are asked, and a limited amount of time is given for a response. Teams must remain quiet at all times during the response.

It is therefore the Anubis Paranormal Research Organization’s determination that more time must be given in the research of this site. Anomalies were reported but none as described by prior reports (with the exception of cold spots and scents and a photo of a possible entity). DeForest Park does appear to have paranormal activity attached to it. It could be as a result of the varied tragedies it has witnessed over time or through the act of indigenous peoples calling out to the spirit world for help and assistance through pleas and curses. Darker energy may and can manifest itself under conjuring or occult practices that may have or continue to take place throughout the park. These practices can allow entities such as spirit, demon, or entity, to pass through a portal that may have been opened and never closed. The paranormal encounters may come and go and may only manifest themselves to certain people whom may be “sensitive” to the area. This location also offers entities the ability to charge themselves through hydrodynamic properties such as the Los Angeles River sitting adjacent to the park. This along with a heave sedimentary ground (often containing crystal) can also be utilized as a conduit of energy for entities. We therefore recommend further investigations and research of the DeForest Park property. Also, any residents of the local area should take note and monitor any activity in and or around their personal properties or contact APRO or another paranormal research group for assistance.
