About the Author René Frazee has been teaching Spanish since 2004.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in French and international studies. She also holds a master’s degree in natural re-source management from Colorado State University. Her thesis entailed working on conserving a neotropical bird sanctuary in Guatemala and building sustainable econo-mic capacity for the local people.

René loves teaching students Spanish. She believes in creating captivating, fun, culturally rich, and compre-hensible lessons. Likewise, she is passionate about bring-ing engaging reading materials into the classroom. As a fourth generation Colorado resident, René Frazee has al-ways been fascinated with Colorado’s history and beauty. Prólogo

En un año normal las montañas de Colorado –las ‘Rockies’– reciben 10 pies de nieve, pero cuando las condiciones son perfectas pueden recibir mucha más nieve, hasta 30 o 40 pies. En los años 1800 no existía la tecnología para calcular la acumulación de nieve ni había meteorólogos. Solo había exploradores que obser-vaban las condiciones y reportaban sus observaciones.

John C. Frémont era uno de esos exploradores. Fa-moso por controlar California durante la guerra entre Mé-xico y Estados Unidos, él es considerado un héroe militar. Los historiadores también le dieron el nombre de

«The Pioneer» porque fue famoso por el descubrimiento de varias rutas entre el medio oeste1 y California.

Frémont ya había explorado varias rutas hacia Cali-fornia y, en octubre de 1848, tuvo un plan para explorar la ruta más directa de Missouri a California. El plan era seguir el paralelo 38 hasta llegar a California. En 1848, el paralelo 38 tenía dos características: 1) dividía las na-ciones de México y Estados Unidos; 2) incluía 300 millas de las montañas Rockies, unas montañas enormes.

Frémont buscaba fama y dinero, pero lo que encon-tró fue una tormenta enorme. Como resultado de la tor-menta, ¡había 30 o 40 pies de nieve en las montañas de Colorado!

Esta es la historia de esa increíble expedición.

Capítulo 1 Búfalos

El 21 de octubre del año 1848, Ted McNabb co-menzó la aventura más importante de su vida. No tenía ni idea de que también sería la más difícil. Ted solo tenía 14 años y ya era parte de una expedición de gran impor-tancia: encontrar la ruta más directa de Missouri a Cali-fornia. Ted estaba emocionado por tener la increíble oportunidad de formar parte de la 4.a expedición del fa-moso explorador John C. Frémont.

El tío de Ted también era explorador. Se llamaba Ale-xis Goodey. Alexis tenía mucha experiencia y había par-ticipado en varias expediciones. Alexis quería que Ted también tuviera la oportunidad de participar en una ex-pedición. Su tío era amigo de Frémont. Así que Frémont permitió que Ted participara en la expedición. ¡Ted es-taba emocionado! Ser parte de la expedición era una oportunidad increíble para él.

Ted era un chico responsable y aventurero como su tío. Le gustaba imaginarse cazando1 búfalos y otros ani-males, pero en realidad Ted solo cuidaba animales. En la expedición, llevaban mulas y Ted era el responsable de cuidarlas. Las mulas eran obstinadas y difíciles de con-trolar.

La mula no se movió. Poche era la mula más obsti-nada y a Ted no le gustaba.

En ese momento, Ted vio unos animales enormes e impresionantes. ¡Vio unos búfalos! Unos cazadores se-guían a los búfalos. Ted miraba a los cazadores. ¡Quería cazar con ellos!

De repente, hubo una estampida. Los búfalos corrie-ron en dirección a las mulas. Ted reaccionó rápidamente.

– ¡Corran, mulas! ¡Corran! –gritó Ted con voz de pánico.

Ted ya no pensaba en cazar. Solo pensaba en esca-par y en salvar a las mulas. ¡Tenía miedo!

– ¡Corre! –le gritó su tío y se fue rápidamente para ayudar a los cazadores.

Los cazadores intentaban guiar a los búfalos hacia el llano2. Ted observaba la situación y ¡realmente tenía miedo! Los búfalos continuaron corriendo hacia donde estaban Ted y las mulas. Ted corría con las mulas y ¡es-taba exhausto! Ya no podía correr más. Pero de repente, los búfalos corrieron en otra dirección y Ted se escapó de la estampida.

Unas horas después, Ted llegó al campamento con las mulas. Cuidó de las mulas y, después, comió. En ese momento, Ted tenía que estar de guardia, pero ¡no quería hacerlo! A Ted no le gustaba estar de guardia. Circulaban muchos rumores sobre los indígenas y también sobre los animales feroces, y ¡Ted les tenía miedo!

La mañana del 9 de noviembre de 1848, Ted se des-pertó y se preparó para continuar con la expedición. Ted cuidaba de las mulas y otros hombres se preparaban para seguir el río Arkansas hacia el oeste. Dos miembros del

grupo ya se habían ido1 para investigar el área.

Buscaban evidencia de indígenas, criminales, ani-males y otros posibles problemas para proteger al resto de la expedición. Después de una hora, uno de los in-vestigadores regresó al campamento.

– Hay comanches en el área –anunció el hom-bre.

Ted pensó en los rumores... Ted no quería encon-trarse con los indígenas porque no quería tener un con-flicto violento con ellos. Nervioso, le preguntó a su tío Alexis:

– ¿Los comanches nos causarán problemas?

– Depende.

– ¡¿Depende?! –exclamó Ted–. ¿Depende de qué?

– Depende de si cuestionan nuestras intenciones. Los comanches quieren proteger su territorio y a sus familias. Con nosotros, por lo general, solo quieren hacer comercio o intercambios.

Ted tenía miedo. No quería encontrarse con los co-manches. No quería una confrontación con ellos. Ted continuaba con las mulas cuando de repente, vio a unos indígenas. Ellos gritaban y corrían en todas direcciones. Nervioso, Ted le preguntó a su tío Alexis.

– Tío, ¿ellos son comanches?

– Sí –le respondió su tío con un tono serio.

Ted observó a los comanches por unos minutos. Notó que los comanches seguían a la expedición.

– Los comanches están siguiéndonos –dijo Ted nervioso.

– Sí, ellos también van a Big Timbers –le respon-dió su tío.

Ted se sorprendió. No le gustó la situación.

– Tranquilo, Ted. Es normal. En Big Timbers hace-mos intercambios con los comanches y tam-bién con otros grupos indígenas.

Cuando llegaron a Big Timbers, Ted fue a cuidar de las mulas. Después de darles comida, Ted cubrió las mulas con unas mantas2. Entonces, nervioso, fue a ob-servar los intercambios con los indígenas.
