Core Units of Study

Apprentices study on a specialist pathway linked to their job role. Pathways currently offered are:

• General Litigation • Personal Injury • Conveyancing

Unit 1 - Introduction to Law and Practice: this unit provides a broad introduction to the study of law, laying the foundation stones for the rest of your legal training. It is a wide-ranging unit, covering the workings, history and quirks of our legal system.

Unit 16 - Client Care Skills: this unit covers the importance of client care and The Solicitors Regulation Authority Code of Conduct. It is one of two compulsory professional skills units, the other being Legal Research Skills.

Unit 17 - Legal Research Skills: this unit allows you to practice legal research, a vital skill you will need throughout your career. Along with Client Care Skills, it is one of two compulsory professional skills units.

Apprentices will also study additional units relevant to the pathway they have selected.

- General Litigation Pathway: Unit 2 Contract Law and Unit 9 Civil Litigation Practice - Personal Injury Pathway: Unit 5 The Law of Tort and Unit 9 Civil Litigation Practice - Conveyancing Pathway: Unit 4 Land Law and Unit 10 Conveyancing Practice

Available Pathways

All apprentices will study three core CILEx Level 3 units: Introduction to Law and Practice, Client Care Skills and Legal Research Skills. Apprentices will study additional units relevant to the pathway they have selected. These units comprise the knowledge element of the apprenticeship.

What will they learn?

We have partnered with Mindful Education to deliver this apprenticeship through our Online and On Campus model. Apprentices will attend college regularly and will study online materials during allotted time at work.

Online lessons can be accessed at any time, using a mobile, tablet or desktop - meaning apprentices can fit their study around work commitments, minimising disruption in the workplace. Each lesson lasts around 45 minutes and is accompanied by animations and motion graphics to bring concepts to life. Exercises, interactive case studies and analytical tools help to enhance the learning experience further.

On campus, apprentices benefit from face-to-face classes at college with an experienced tutor. A combination of classroom-based lessons, group exercises and discussion encourage apprentices to apply theory to real-life workplace situations.

This modern, flexible approach to apprenticeship training empowers learners, minimises disruption to employers, and delivers tangible results in the workplace.

Study Method – Online and On Campus

How will they be assessed?

• The CILEx Level 3 introductory law and practice unit is assessed through a central CILEx exam. There are two exam sessions per year• The client care and legal research professional skills are assessed by coursework marked by the college and moderated by CILEx• The areas of law and legal practice are assessed through two end-of-unit written exams and two open book timed assessments of 90 minutes each.• The portfolio: evidence gathered during the apprenticeship to demonstrate knowledge and competence is compiled into a portfolio during the final four months of the apprenticeship, which is used to form the basis of the interview is conducted• An end-point interview, during which apprentices are asked questions to demonstrate their competence.

The Paralegal Apprenticeship contributes to the CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and to the Chartered Lgal Executive Qualification.

Those completing a Paralegal Apprenticeship can also move on to a Chartered Legal Executive Apprenticeship. Apprentices with suitable aptitude can be developed further using either of these routes. This makes the Paralegal Apprenticeship an ideal recruitment and selection tool for the next generation of fee earners.

The Paralegal Apprenticeship may also contribute to part of the competence element of the Solicitor Apprenticeship.
