and other villages in the Negev claimownership of the land on the basis of residency stretching back more than140 years and the payment of taxesduring the Ottoman period and theBritish mandate But Israel took overthe land shortly after declaring itsstate in 1948 saying the inhabitantsfailed to produce deeds proving theirownership It was then designated amilitary zone
