Puma Softball Coaching Staff

Nick Candrea enters his 15th season as PVCC Softball’s Head Coach. Prior to taking the helm at Softball in 2005, he was the Men’s Golf Head Coach for PVCC. Candrea was born in White Plains, NY, and then moved to New Orleans, LA where he lived until 1960 when he then made his new home in Phoenix. Upon graduation from Sunnyslope High School, he went to Glendale Community College on a baseball scholarship. After two years at GCC he spent four years in the United States Air Force. He then attended Arizona

State University and completed his degree in education. His first high school teaching job was at Moon Valley High School where he spent one year as a member of the Physical Education Department as well as coaching football and baseball. Candrea spent 30 years at Washington High School where he was Head of the Physical Education Department. He was the head baseball coach for 28 of those years and he coached football, softball and golf. He coached two State Championship teams: 1986 Baseball and 1988 Golf. During his tenure teaching and coaching Candrea accomplished the following: Skyline Region Coach of the Year in baseball, softball and golf; 1986 Arizona Baseball Coach of the Year; four time North All-Star Baseball coach. He was inducted into the Arizona Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2008. Candrea currently lives in Peoria, AZ with his wife Staci. He has six children: Scott, Christy, Jeff, Whitney, Kelsey, and Cody. He is an avid golfer and New York Yankee fan.

Jimmy Gutierrez joined the Puma Softball coaching staff in 2017. Gutierrez was born and raised in Mesa, AZ and is the oldest sibling of four, with three younger sisters. He is a graduate of Mesa High School. Immediately following high school graduation Gutierrez joined the U.S Army and served through Desert Storm. After active duty, he attended both Phoenix College and Arizona State University. He played all sports growing up including baseball, football and wrestling. He also had a 10 year amateur boxing career during which time he was interviewed for the 2006 ESPN television series, “The Contender.” Gutierrez has been coaching and working with at risk youth for 18 years. He has worked with such organizations as: the Arizona Boys Ranch, Deer Valley and Mesa Public School Districts and Chicanos Por La Causa, where he provided underage drinking and substance abuse prevention courses to youth in the Phoenix Elementary School District. Gutierrez recently acquired his 300th win as a head coach by coaching the Arizona Outlaws Gold to a perfect 5-0 mark and the only team out of 32 in the San Diego AFCS Showcase to leave undefeated. Gutierrez has coached a state championship, state runner-up, western regional qualifier championship, a 4th place world series finish and 15 other TCS, USSSA and ASA top three finishes in five years of competitive club softball coaching. Gutierrez is currently a Program Coordinator with Family Support Resources, where he oversees the care of CPS and juvenile probationary youth placed in their care. He is dedicated to helping change the lives of Arizona’s youth both at work and on the softball field.
