Palm trees, crashing waves, lazy beaches and sunsets. Hawaiian island life is paradise for most.

However, Goodfellow Bros., Inc. (GBI) takes it one day at a time – on the rocks – with its hardworking Hitachi fleet.

s a family-owned general contractor with more than 95 years of experience, Goodfellow Bros., Inc. (GBI) knows how to take on challenging terrain, whether working in Washington, Oregon, California or especially Hawaii. And the company relies on its Hitachi excavator fleet to tackle Hawaii’s tough lava rock environment.

The company first started using Hitachi excavators more than 20 years ago and hasn’t looked back.

“Cost-effectiveness and power – those are our top two things we look for, especially with excavators, so Hitachi is great for us,” said Shepherd Nelson, GBI equipment asset manager. “Our operators love them.”

Lately, GBI’s Hitachi fleet has been busy powering though several high-profile projects on the Big Island.

LONG TIME COMINGHawaii’s Queen Ka’ahumanu (Queen K) highway expansion is no ordinary project. GBI first won the bid for the project more than five years ago. However, after the discovery of artifacts and trails on the site, the project was halted, redesigned and went out for re-bid. Once again, GBI secured the project, which has grown into a $105 million job and is estimated for completion in summer 2018.

“The project is a 5.5-mile stretch of road, infrastructure and mass grading,” said Clifford Cox, GBI foreman. “We’re also completing five miles of waterline, four miles of sewer, reclaimed water line, force main sewer pipes and doing cuts up to 50 feet for dry well pits.”

Hitachi excavators ranging from a ZX245USLC-5 reduced-tail-swing model up to a ZX470LC-6 have been put to the test on the highway project and have garnered some attention.

e had about eight Hitachis working at one time on this project, and it was awesome to see those orange sticks moving back and forth, ripping,” Cox said. “We had a lot of compliments from people driving up on the

highway and seeing all the Hitachis. I even got calls from the mainland saying, ‘Wow, looks like you’ve got an orange show on that project.’ And we were really proud of that.”

As an island with a rich history, Hawaii comes with some cultural nuances. The existing archaeological sites in the area affected the project’s original timeline as well as its design. For example, a massive retaining wall was added to protect the archeological sites. As the project continues to move forward, GBI works with archaeologists and cultural monitors – one of each assigned to every working machine on the job.

“The history of the land is explained before anyone begins work on the job, and material is monitored as it is being excavated,” Nelson said. “Working in Hawaii, it’s important to us to be culturally responsible to meet the community

needs. Each of our jobs is blessed by a ‘kupuna,’ or spiritual elder or leader, before our Hitachi excavators go to work. We want to be the contractor of choice for the community and do right by the ‘aina,’ or land.”

Cox added that another part of doing right by the land and ensuring the project’s success is having the right equipment.

“I love this company because they take care of our employees and get us the right tools,” Cox said. “And the right tool is the Hitachi. For our region, all our operators request Hitachi. Having the right tool for the job is a good thing!”

MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR VIEWSAs GBI makes progress on the Queen K highway project, more of its Hitachi fleet is digging the way for multi-million dollar views in a new subdivision in the Manini’owali section of the exclusive Kuki’o Golf & Beach Club in Kona.

For the subdivision, GBI is building 20 housing pads ranging in size from 0.6 to 1.2 acres on 4- to 5-acre lots that will be worth approximately $2 million each. The lots will eventually hold homes estimated around $15 million with unbelievable ocean views.

Before those views can be enjoyed, Hitachi excavators ranging from a ZX135USLC-5 up to two ZX470LC-5 models are tackling approximately 100,000 cubic yards of rock excavation along with 3,500 lineal feet of roadway, potable water, irrigation, gravity sewer and underground electrical.

Several ZX350LC-6 excavators are the primary workhorses in the lineup. Because of the lava rock terrain and a no-blasting restriction, the machines must rip and hammer before digging. Sean Landers, GBI project manager, said the Hitachi excavators are a good match for the demanding work.

“The beauty about the Hitachi excavators is they’re super versatile,” Landers said. “We’ve got them hoe-ramming, ripping rock out of the ground, digging trenches, loading trucks and backfilling trenches.”

Greg Bennett, a GBI operator with 10 years of experience, enjoys running a ZX350LC-6 on site as well as other Hitachi equipment.

“Hitachis are the quickest and have the best power-to-speed ratio,” Bennett said. “The controls are sharper and more accurate than other kinds of machines. Overall, Hitachi always gets the job done.”

With GBI’s Hitachi fleet at work, Landers is not intimidated by the project’s tight timeline.

“Having the reliability of the Hitachi machines has helped us to essentially accelerate our schedule,” he said. “We’re on track to finish on time or even a little bit earlier right now.”

Along with relying on its equipment, GBI also depends on its local dealer to help keep jobs moving forward.

“The guys at American Machinery are amazing partners,” Nelson said. “We work with them and dial in on preventative maintenance.”

Landers agrees and experiences the support first-hand on projects.

“Out here we’re in rock on a Pacific Island, and we’re dealing with some pretty harsh conditions,” he said. “And the one thing we can always count on is for American Machinery to be there for us. They’re always there to help us keep moving.”

Q A

Tell us a little about your company and how you got started.

Hudbay is a Canadian mining company with 90 years of experience and mining operations in various parts of the American continent. In Peru, it operates the Constancia Mining Unit located 4,500 meters (14,764 ft.) above sea level in the province of Chumbivilcas in the department of Cusco.

Since 2013, I have been part of Hudbay Perú as superintendent of mine maintenance, in charge of the supervision of the maintenance of our equipment. This is why I had the experience of participating in the assembly of all the mine equipment, as well as in the beginning of the tests of the Hitachi equipment in our operations. Thanks to the good performance of these trucks, we made the decision to acquire the first three Hitachi EH4000 trucks in the country.

When and why did you start using Hitachi Mining Equipment?

We began to use the Hitachi EX5600 shovels from the beginning of our operations due to the good performance of the brand and the support to other operations in the country.

What type of work do you use Hitachi shovels and trucks for? How have they performed?

The three shovels we have at the Constancia mine site are for earth movement, both for ore movement and for overburden. The three Hitachi trucks along with the hauling fleet perform well.

Have you used other brands of shovels and trucks? How does Hitachi compare?

Yes, by comparing the Hitachi truck with its type (electric trucks), I consider that its brake system and descent control is very reliable and easier to control. The Hitachi brand is known for its high level of confidence.

Why do you continue to use Hitachi equipment?

We continue to use Hitachi equipment because it adapts to our operations. Hitachi focuses on the requirements of its customer, which in our case is safe and responsible production with the highest standards of safety, environmental and operational excellence in the Constancia Mining Unit. ■

A new Hitachi ZX300LC-6 is providing additional excavating power for subdivision and utility work at Joe Roberts Construction in Prince George, B.C.

The new production-class excavator joins an existing fleet of four Hitachi models. Joe Roberts, owner of Joe Roberts Construction, also owns three ZX245LC-5 excavators and one ZX50U-5.

“I’ve been in the construction industry for a long time and have always had good success with Hitachi models. I’m just a Hitachi guy,” Roberts said. “Overall the machines are just good machines.”

Roberts started his business four years ago to cut back on traveling and spend more time near his Prince George home. As his business grew, so did his equipment needs.

“I started off with one ZX245, and then bought another and another,” he said. “This year, projects continued to grow and I needed a bigger machine that had more power. The ZX300 really served that purpose.”

After a six-month rental contract, Roberts was ready to buy the machine.

“My operators really like it and I usually base my buying decisions on their input. They really like the machine a lot,” he said. “My local Wajax office has also provided great service and it’s just worked out really well.”

IF YOU ASK MATT FACCHINA, OWNER OF DELMARVA SITE DEVELOPMENT, WHAT HIS SECRET TO SUCCESS IS, HE’LL TELL YOU. IT’S ACTUALLY VERY SIMPLE AND INVOLVES A LOT OF ORANGE IRON.

12 | HitachiConstruction.com

eadquartered in Crofton, Md., Delmarva Site Development has specialized in full-service commercial and residential site development for the Mid-Atlantic region since 1999. The company takes

projects from concept to build out and finished design, and has about 145 employees.

“We have a simple business philosophy: we just outwork everyone,” said Matt Facchina, owner of Delmarva Site Development. “After 18 years, we’ve cultivated a group of customers and it’s

not because of me. My guys outwork everyone. We’re relentless.”

When it came to achieving his business philosophy, Facchina knew his guys needed equipment just as relentless as they were. He chose Hitachi excavators from the beginning and started building what he calls his “Orange Crush” fleet.

“I was familiar with Hitachi from previous employers,” he said. “So I started my own business with an understanding of the reliability of Hitachi excavators. It was an easy choice. We pride ourselves on the

‘Orange Crush’! Currently, we’re running about 42 Hitachi excavators ranging from a few mini excavators up to several 470s and a new 670. We still have a 450 that has about 19,000 hours on it!”

OUTWORKDelmarva has dedicated about a dozen of its Orange Crush fleet to an $85-million residential development project called Parkside at Westphalia in Prince George’s County, Md. The massive, multi-phase project covers 300 acres and will include 3,000 residential units.

“We started this project in 2012 and anticipate completion around 2022,” Facchina said. “We’re performing all the infrastructure, earthwork and underground utilities – sewer, water and storm drain. The project has over 3 million cubic yards of earthwork, and we’re putting in hundreds of thousands of feet of sewer and water line.”

Justin Martin, Delmarva project superintendent, said having Hitachi excavators on site makes a big difference.

“Hitachis are durable and reliable,” Martin said. “You know every morning your machine is going to do what you ask it to every day.”

OUTPERFORMWith 18 years of experience, Delmarva knows what it takes to successfully work in the area’s challenging soil conditions.

“In the Mid-Atlantic region, we’re forced to work in poor soil conditions,” Facchina said. “We joke that the competitors can come out and put their products on a dry site with hard ground and they all do good. But when we’re working in bad, soft soil conditions, Hitachi just really outperforms everything.”

Each Orange Crush excavator is a team player on Delmarva’s jobs. The ZX470LC-6, ZX350LC-6 and ZX210LC-6 are the primary workhorses on the Parkside at Westphalia project.

“The 350 – paired with a 210 and loader – is our sweet spot for our utility crews,” Facchina said. “We run the 210s as support machines. We use

The Wounded Warrior Project.

Matt Facchina, owner Delmarva Site Development

them for digging, installing and as a backfill tool on our waterline operations. We use the 470s as loading tools. Our whole earthwork crew is dependent on the 470. If it goes down, about six or seven other pieces stop. We need our excavators up and running, and Hitachi is very reliable.”

Delmarva has also equipped its fleet to be as efficient as possible.

“About 90 percent of our fleet is outfitted with couplers, and all our 470s are set up with Trimble systems,” Facchina said. “For all the grading, it’s stakeless construction using GPS.”

Along with the Orange Crush, another recognizable fixture on Delmarva’s sites are a pair of fuel trucks proudly displaying American flag and Wounded Warrior Project decals.

“We’re big supporters of The Wounded Warrior Project and of St. Jude’s,” Facchina said. “We like to give back. We hope to motivate other people to get involved and support organizations like these.”

OUTLASTAt the end of the day, for Delmarva, it’s about doing what you say and having the right guys and equipment to get the job done.

“Talk is cheap,” Facchina said. “It’s all about the delivery on jobs. I pride myself on not having a fleet with two of every brand; I’m real particular with having consistency within our fleet. I think our customers understand that we’ve got the best equipment in the industry and that we invest a lot in our spread. We’re here to produce and we need the best tools to work with.”

Facchina continues to build Delmarva’s Orange Crush with the help of his Hitachi dealer Elliott & Frantz.

“Elliott & Frantz is always there for me,” he said. “They’re a big reason we continue to choose Hitachi excavators. Bob Schaeffer and his team have been just phenomenal to work with throughout the years. The Hitachi organization has stood behind their product, and we just love our Hitachis.”

Delmarva has no plans to stop outworking the competition anytime soon. And Facchina is perfectly happy staying in his “sandbox.”

“I’m an operator by trade and I enjoy being outside,” he said. “It’s my sandbox. We’re very blessed to be able to do this every day.”
