es™(ARA) - Whether you want to prepare your outdoor spaces for entertaining or you’re trying to make a great fi rst impression on home buyers, now is the time to get the outside looking great. From fi xing up the deck on the front porch to adding some colorful fl owers to the landscaping, there are plenty of elements to make your home look more inviting.
Start by determining your home’s best exterior features, and then assess some improvements that you can tackle on your own and get the biggest bang for your buck. Here are some simple ways to help boost your curb appeal:
• Clean up clutterGetting rid of clutter and scrubbing down grime should be the fi rst steps in giving your home’s exterior a fresh new glow. Start by removing any unused items or dead plants from the yard. Clean out the gutters and
consider power washing the front of the house. It might not look dirty, but you’d be amazed at how much dirt can accumulate and cause a dingy, dull appearance.
• Spruce up landscapingTake pride in your front yard and make sure to keep up with regular lawn maintenance. This could mean adding some new shrubs, plants or fl owers to the house, but start by fi xing up and trimming down all existing yard features. Consider lining walkways with an attractive fence or adding a splash of color with potted plants or bright fl owers. A few garden fi x-ups can go a long way to improve an outsider’s fi rst impression of your home.
• Add fresh features If it’s in the budget, hit up a local home and garden store to fi nd some simple products to

(ARA) - Across the nation, both building professionals and consumers are embracing the idea of sustainable building practices. This practice follows a process that is environmentally responsible and resource effi cient throughout a building’s life cycle: from design to construction, operation to mai ntenance and renovation, to eventually, demolition. This practice expands and complements the classical building design concerns of economy, utility, durability and comfort.
Green building brings together a vast array of practices and techniques to reduce and ultimately eliminate the impacts of buildings on the environment and human health. It often emphasizes taking advantage of renewable resources, such as using sunlight to generate solar power and using plants to reduce rainwater run-off.
According to the Energy Information Administration, the demand for green homes is expected to rise 900 percent in
the next fi ve years.
In the home, using energy effi cient appliances can dramatically reduce energy waste and cut costs. Companies like Miele offer a wide range of Energy Star rated appliances for every room in the house from the kitchen to the laundry room.
For example, Miele offers induction cooktops, which use a non-contact method of heating using magnetic fi elds to transfer energy directly to cookware. The induction element stays cool, while the target object heats up rapidly for extremely effi cient cooking. Like gas, induction is exceptionally easy and quick to control. The ability to precisely control the power makes induction perfect for all types of cooking. It is highly reactive and exceedingly safe. The cooking surface is cool in operation and only generates heat where the pan sits on it. As soon as the pan is

Give Your Home An Annual Checkup To Help Save Energy, Money(ARA) - Clean out the gutters. Put away the deck furniture and grill. Have the furnace checked. Sound familiar? Fall home improvement projects can help protect your home from cold weather and help save money on costly repairs down the road.
“An annual walk-around is a great way to check for potential maintenance needs for your home,” says Kathy Krafka Harkema, spokesperson for Pella Windows and Doors. “Check major systems that help protect your house - the roof, gutters, siding, exterior fi nish, windows, doors, foundation and steps, plus interior components like heating, cooling, chimney and electrical systems.”
Look for obvious signs of deterioration, damage or potential problems, Krafka Harkema advises. Replace or repair worn or broken items before they cause potential
problems. Start with new storm doorOne quick project is to install a new energy-effi cient storm door. A storm door brings natural light into the home, while helping to keep the cold, wet weather out.
“Adding a new storm door is a quick, affordable way to boost your home’s energy effi ciency, improve the curb appeal and help protect the entry door from the weather,” Krafka Harkema says.
Inspect windows, doorsWhen checking your home’s windows and doors, inspect the interior and exterior fi nishes around them. Is the paint or stain in good condition? Signs of fl aking and peeling or water stains may mean that it’s time to refi nish or replace the unit.

Fun, Surprising Cost-Saving Home Improvements(ARA) - Who wouldn’t like to save money on utility bills this winter? But have you ever considered some of the more common energy-effi cient home improvements - like insulating your hot water heater or replacing incandescent bulbs with compact fl uorescents - and thought “dullsville”?
Sometimes the act of saving money just isn’t fun enough on its own. Fortunately, you can make home improvements that will trim your utility bills and boost your home’s appeal at the same time. Here are four fun home improvements that are surprisingly energy effi cient as well:
1. Buy a new dishwasher - Or clothes washer. Older appliances were not only built to be less energy effi cient, they can lose what little effi ciency they had as they age. If your appliances are more than 10 years old, they likely use more energy and water than newer models, especially new models that are Energy Star qualifi ed.
Dishwashers purchased before 1994 use an additional 10 gallons or more of water per cycle than a new Energy Star qualifi ed model, according to EnergyStar.gov. And if you
don’t have a dishwasher at all, don’t think of buying one as just a luxury. Energy Star says you’ll save 5,000 gallons of water and knock $40 per year off your utility bills if you give up washing dishes by hand - not to mention 230 hours of your time.
2. Beautify your bathroom - Kitchens and baths sell homes, but they’re also the rooms where the most water gets used and wasted. Old fi xtures and faucets are among the top water-wasting culprits in a home. You can conserve water by turning off the tap when you brush your teeth, but that water savings goes down the drain if the toilet runs constantly when you leave the room.
Replacing leaky fi xtures can reap signifi cant water savings. Energy Star says a leaky faucet can waste gallons of water. Just one drip per second can waste up to 1,661 gallons of water in a year, according to EnergyStar.gov. You can also conserve water by installing a low-fl ow showerhead,
which can save you as much as 5 gallons of water during a 10-minute shower. Many manufacturers now offer stylish, water-effi cient faucets and showerheads.
Venting skylights provide decorating air with providing natural light and passive ventilation.

removed, the flow of heat stops immediately.
For more information on the various types of energy efficient appliances available, visit www.mieleusa.com.
Young, savvy, environmentally-conscious consumers are at the forefront of the green movement. Programs like the Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon allow this demographic to create and design an energy efficient home.
The Solar Decathlon is a program that challenges collegiate teams to design, build, and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient, and attractive. The winner of the
competition is the team that best blends affordability, consumer appeal, and design excellence with optimal energy production and maximum efficiency. This year’s winner was the University of Maryland Team WaterShed.
“We are extremely pleased to be partnering with Miele on our entry into the 2011 Solar Decathlon competition,” says Brian Grieb, University of Maryland Team WaterShed’s faculty project manager. “Miele has a reputation for providing elegantly designed, environmentally conscious, cost-efficient products that are constructed with longevity in mind. These attributes are exactly the qualities we were seeking to include in the WaterShed home.”
Increase Your Home Value, Enhance Your Curb Appeal
Green Living Plus Green Savings: An Efficient Equation For Today’s Homeownersenhance existing elements.
Maybe it’s a new mailbox, trendy yard decor, or even a shiny new fixture for the front door. You can also add a couple pieces of furniture to create a more welcoming atmosphere to the front porch. Consider a visit to second-hand shops or garage sales; you never know when a fresh coat of paint can make one man’s trash another man’s treasure.• Prep your deckThe exterior of your home doesn’t stop at the front yard - make sure it looks inviting all the way around. Start by prepping the deck and applying a new coat of wood stain to enhance and
beautify, while protecting your investment for the future. The Flood brand of wood care products provides a complete line - from prepping and cleaning to staining and sealing - to help you get the job done and make your deck the place to be.
There are plenty of projects that can make a huge difference to improve the look of your home without requiring you to spend a fortune on remodeling. Get a head start on a few of these weekend projects. Your home just might be the envy of all your neighbors this summer.

Give your home an annual checkup to help save energy, money
Next, check windowsills and tracks for dirt and debris like sand, leaves, insects or pine needles. Open windows and doors to clean out the area with a soft brush. Debris can hamper the airtight effectiveness and overall performance of doors and windows.
“An easy, effective winterizing tip is to look at the weather stripping around doors and windows,” Krafka Harkema says. “Reattach loose pieces and replace those that are ripped or torn.”
Finally, feel for uneven sliding and sticking when you open and close a window. Try using a non-oily lubricant, like paraffi n wax, on the opposing fi nishes.
Replace for safety’s sake
Windows and doors that do not open and close easily could be a safety risk, especially in the event of a fi re. Replace broken or inoperable windows and doors with safer, more energy-effi cient ones.
Ten signs it’s time to replace your windowsTo help save energy, look for these signs that it’s time to replace your windows:
• Overall poor performance of the window - Opening or closing is a diffi cult task and air leaks in, out or around the window.
• In a fog - Condensation or fogging occurs between panes of glass.
• Chipping away - Chipping, peeling or deterioration on the
fi nish on or around the window.
• Singled out - You have a home with single-pane windows, much less energy-effi cient than double or triple-pane options.
• Water logged - telltale water stains remain on the leaky window or the area around the window (inside or out).
• Out-of-date - Replacement parts are hard to fi nd or even non-existent.
• Energy hog - Energy bills are on the rise, so it’s time to help increase your home’s energy
effi ciency.
• Draft dodger - You can feel cold air or drafts when sitting near the window ... and it’s closed.
• Shut in - Windows are painted or nailed shut.
• Simply put - The window won’t open easily or won’t stay in place once you do get it open.

3. Let the sun shine in - A venting skylight is a fun way to fi ll your home with nourishing natural light and passive ventilation, but did you know it’s also energy effi cient? Installing a venting skylight can help you lower your electric bill by reducing your dependency on artifi cial light and electric fans. Natural light has been tied to a host of health benefi ts, including improving mood. A skylight not only enhances the energy effi ciency of your home, it adds decorating fl air and could make you feel better about living there.
They’re also relatively low-cost when it comes to “luxury” home improvements. You can get an Energy Star qualifi ed “No Leak Skylight” from Velux for about $1,000 per unit for a remote-controlled electric venting model that closes automatically should it rain. Log on to www.veluxusa.com to fi nd a local installer for a
customized cost estimate.
4. Install a fi replace - Zone heating the areas of your home where you spend the most time can reduce your home heating bill by 20 to 40 percent, according to the Hearth, Patio and Barbecue Association. Installing an energy-effi cient fi replace or a stove is a great, appealing way to zone heat the rooms you use the most.
What’s more, this type of heating can be “greener,” if you use renewable fuels like cord wood, pellets or other plant-derived materials in your high-effi ciency stove or fi replace. As for the fun quotient, it’s hard to top a fi replace for a home improvement that adds warmth and appeal to a room.Saving money can be doubly exciting, when you opt for energy-effi cient home improvements that also enhance enjoyment of your home.
A venting skylight in the bath not only provides natural light and passive ventilation but a ords privacy.
