Q: Is there any celeb-

rity Giada De Lauren-

tiis would love to

cook a meal for?

—JoAnn F., Cary, N.C.

A: “I’ve always thought it would’ve

been fun to cook dinner for Marilyn Monroe,” says De Laurentiis, 42, one of the judges of Food Network Star (pre-miering tonight). “She seemed like a blast and probably had some great

stories to tell.” What would be on the menu? “I’d make my Chianti beef stew. It’s comfort food with a sophis-ticated fl air. For dessert, my chocolate-hazelnut ravioli.” Get both recipes at parade.com/giada.

WALTER SCOTT’S

The holistic health guru, 65, has wri en a memoir, Brotherhood,

with his brother, Sanjiv Chopra, a medical professor at Harvard.

What inspired this

book? It was a chance

for us to look back at

our lives. We were brought up in the same environ-

ment and trained in medicine, yet we went in differ-

ent directions. Every encounter shapes our identity.

As an immigrant, how do you react to something

like the Boston bombings? The suspects in that

case were immigrants, too. If that incident infl u-

ences our policy on immigration, then we’ll miss

all the other people who have come from all

over and are contributing to the greatness of the

United States. You just have to look at the list of

U.S. Nobel prizes to see that a lot of the winners

are immigrants.

Do you like connecting with your audience via

Twitter? I do. It gives me the chance to interact

with people from all over the world. It’s hard to

make a contribution in 140 characters, but I try!

Q: Has Vanna

White ever tripped

while wearing one

of her evening

gowns?

—Emilee R., Ozark, Mo.

A: “Many times! I’ve always caught myself, though, so I’ve never actually fallen down,” says the Wheel of Fortune cohost. “Straps break or a button pops off every now and then, but the show must go on.” In 31 years on the air, White, 56, has worn more than 6,000 outfi ts, never once repeating a dress. “We tape 12 shows at a time. To fi nd those dresses, I try on 100,” she says. See her fashions through the years at pinterest.com/parademag.

Q: George Jones’s funeral

was at the Grand Ole

Opry House. Have other

funerals been held there?

—Mack P., Miami

A: The country icon, who passed away in April at the age of 81, was the fi fth member of the Opry to have a funeral at the Nashville institution. Memorial shows have been held at the Opryland complex since 1992, when Roy Acuff, “the King of Country Music,” was honored, but it wasn’t until 1998 that the fi rst funeral took place there, for Grandpa Jones of Hee Haw fame. “It may seem strange, but to so many people who are country music artists or fans, this is their second home,” says Brenda Colladay, the Opry’s curator.

SUMMERThrills and adventures, crowd-pleasing shows, delicious treats, and endless possibilities

Cover and opening photographs by PETER YANG

Best MORNING PICK-ME-UP Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan go together like lemonade and a hot summer day. As they climb aboard a tandem bike for their photo shoot, laughing and teasing each other, it’s easy to see why the former New York Giants defensive lineman sacked 58 (!) other candidates for the gig as Ripa’s cohost on Live, permanently replacing the departing Regis Philbin eight months ago. ● Live With Kelly and Michael has been going strong ever since, with new episodes continuing into August. But this summer the duo is also looking forward to a season fi lled with fun, family, and … soup? ● “I want to get my clamming license, so I can make chowder,” says Ripa, 42. ● “Really?” asks Strahan, 41. ● “My boys love it. I’ll invite you all over,” replies Ripa, who lives in Manhattan with husband Mark Consuelos and their three children and has enjoyed watching her family get to know Strahan’s this year. “It’s a cool moment as parents to see all the kids huddled together,” adds her cohost, a father of four who splits his time between continued on page 9

Best ADRENALINE

RUSHThis summer, it can be found in Sandusky, Ohio: The brand-new GateKeeper, a $30 mil-lion roller coaster at the Cedar Point amusement park, sends suspended passengers (your torso gets strapped in; your legs dangle) careen-ing at 67 mph along a track designed to mimic stunt pilot maneuvers such as the Immelman, a half-loop followed by a 180-degree roll. The coaster breaks seven world records, including highest vertical plunge (164 feet). In other words, buckle up. Strahan: I started working

summer I was 13, which was

incredible for our relationship.

Those were my summers:

working out with my dad,

hanging out with my brothers,

I really think we are! We don’t

Best Reasons toHIT THE BALLPARKThe 2013 season is your last chance to see pitch-ing great Mariano Rivera, who says he’ll call it quits in the fall. The New York Yankees closer is also the last active player to wear Jackie Robinson’s No. 42, which was retired from baseball in 1997. (For the team’s sched-ule, visit yankees.com.) And Rivera isn’t the only amazing pitcher you can catch this summer. Sports Illustrated’s Tom Verducci is predicting a big year for no-hitters, thanks to the abundance of dominating hurlers like Justin Verlander (Detroit Tigers), Yu Darvish (Texas Rangers), Matt Harvey (New York Mets), Matt Cain (San Fran-cisco Giants), Stephen Strasburg (Washington Nationals), and Clayton Kershaw (Los Angeles Dodgers).

BANGFOR YOUR BUCKTwenty bucks doesn’t go too far these days, but this summer it’ll buy you a chance to see Kid Rock on his 34-date “Best Night Ever” tour. In addition to the $20 ticket prices (with no service charges), the tour will also feature reduced rates on park-ing and arena eats—even $4 beers. Plus, in some cities, Kid will be joined by opening acts such as Kool & the Gang and ZZ Top. We spoke with the “All Summer Long” singer about what inspired him to launch the low-cost concert series.

When did you come up with this idea?Around 2011. That year, I lowered my T-shirt prices to $20 and $25 from $35 and $40, and we sold twice as many at the lower price. You can’t sing songs about and for working-class folks and expect them to be able to afford sky-high concert tickets.

Are you going to jam onstage with ZZ Top or Kool & the Gang?I am always open to jam, especially with friends like ZZ. And Kool & the Gang’s “Celebration” is a song I wish I wrote. I mean, really, if it comes on and you don’t join in on the “WOO HOO,” you need your head examined.

What was the last thing you bought with $20?A Zebco fi shing pole.

Hit the rapids in Oregon. The Chetco River, tucked into a mountainous corner of the state, has been closed

Take a trip down under ... Indiana. Though explorers have been poking around the Binkley Cave system for decades, it wasn’t until last year that they discovered just how mas-sive it really is: It stretches 36 miles. On a guided tour, you’ll gape at rare subterranean species (like the eye-less cave crayfi sh) and Big Bone Mountain, which is literally a mound of Ice Age fossils. The tour’s topped off with a fl oat down an underground river. (indiana caverns.com)

PEOPLE WILL TALK.

“PLEASE tell me whereyou found that ring! ”

- Waitress at lunch

“I LOVE your ring!”

- Bank teller

“I want one.”

- Your best friend

“Wow. That color is unbelievable!”

- Your hairdresser

“How much?... seriously?”

- Your husband

“There is NO WAYthis ring cost you

only $79!”

- Linda from accounting

This is not the ring to wear if you want to blend in. Two carats of

genuine tanzanite attracts attention. Lots of it. People will talk. That’s

just what happens when you wear the passionate purple stone experts

have called “the most beautiful gem discovered in generations.” Put it on

your finger and you’ll understand why the Stauer Sunburst Tanzanite

Ring is a spectacular piece of jewelry that refuses to be ignored.

Tanzanite is 1,000 times rarer than diamond. It became a sensation

when it was first discovered in 1967 in Tanzania’s Merelani Hills (in the

shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro). It is found nowhere else on Earth and

experts say supplies will not last forever.

Don’t miss your chance to make gem history. Nobody knows

exactly how much remains to be found, but Fifth Avenue is more than

happy to charge you as if the mines were nearly empty. One of the largest

jewelry retailers is selling genuine tanzanite rings online for well over $2,000

each. That’s ridiculous. Order now and we’ll send you an elegant .925

sterling-silver setting loaded with 2 carats of marquise-cut tanzanite for

only $79!

Other jewelry stores hate us because we don't play by their

rules. We took the Sunburst Tanzanite Ring to an independent appraiser

who works with auction houses, estate sales and insurance companies. He

valued it at $590.* We thanked him for his professional opinion and then

ignored it. Because even if a graduate gemologist tells us that this

tanzanite ring is valued at nearly $600, we want you to have it for ONLY

$79. I know it sounds ridiculous, but we're absolutely serious. For this

exclusive offer, we’ve actually lowered our price for one of the world’s most

endangered gemstones.

Your satisfaction is 100% guaranteed. If for any reason you don’t

completely adore your 2-carat Sunburst Tanzanite Ring, just send it back

within 30 days for a full refund of your purchase price. Yes, it’s really that

simple. And yes… it really is that beautiful. Mention ring size: 5-10

I’ve read that one cannot fold a standard sheet of copy paper in half repeatedly more than seven times. If this is so, would using a much larger piece of paper (say, the size of a foot-ball fi eld) make any differ-ence? —Larry Pearson, Pittsburgh

It’s almost impossible to fold a sheet of paper more than seven times, especially if the result must be fl at, or nearly so, to qualify. (Go ahead and try it, readers!) Using larger and thinner paper allows a few more folds, but not nearly as many as you might expect because the paper’s surface area still diminishes by more than half with each fold, so it grows small and dense quickly. A record set by a high school student, who started with about three-quarters of a mile of bath tissue, was only 12 folds.
