Paperless Maintenance – Still a Challenge

Records Records

Before After (few real changes)

Status A number of quick wins currently available using RFID tags

• Oxygen generators: $25M annual savings • Life vests checks: $30M annual savings

Lack of standards and harmonization

Regulatory involvement

RFID @ Austrian

• Aviationbusiness has no common rulemaking all over the world for RFID-technology

– EASA Area has no rulemaking for the use of RFID – RFID only applicable as an additional part-marking. – EASA Part-21 Design Change of tagged components must be performed

• SAE AS5678 / CS 25.853 /RTCA DO-160 compliant tags • where to place, primary part-markings must not be covered • which tags may be used • which part-numbers are effected

– Project in accordance ARINC 673 • Which parts will be selected?

– Cash cows are labour intense parts life vest, oxygen generator – Quickest ROI Business Case was setup on labour reduction (time)

• Internal processes – How fast can the change to the new technology be done? – How many employees will be trained – all or some?

• Readrange – Different cabin layouts deliver different read ranges – Positioning of tags on parts essential (heatshields, wiring)

• Variation between some cm up to 10 meters

The Challenges

www.austrian.com Austrian Airlines | RFID – OPS-Conference 2013 | Roland Scherbaum | April 16, 2013 12

Benefits • ROI less than two years, with the selected system • Revisions of Taskcards

– Revsion of certain labour-intense tasks became possible – Merging of tasks possible, due to multiple data are read during scanning

• Assurance that no parts are due at any time • Selection of an „easy-to-use“ system

– Administration becomes easier – Serverbased application makes datahandling easier

Future Perspective • Tagging other parts

– LLP Parts like squibs – Fire-bottles – Oxy-bottles – Tires

• Interfaces between RFID (Stand alone) and mainenance system AMOS®

• Use RFID for locating and tracking certain serialized parts and GSE

The pitch

2004 Born of MAINtag (MAINtenance with tags) 2005 1st flyable RFID tag onboard Rafale with Dassault Aviation 2009 A350XWB RFID multi-year AIRBUS contract winner. 2011 EN9100 certification. 2012 MAINtag signed its 55th customer for FLYtag® range. GIFAS; Pacte PME, ATA e-business RTT member, IATA contributor.

One step ahead, RFID & Paperless

RFID is a key to generates benefits : better / faster / cheaper. Cabin rotables inventory = ROI : 7 to 12 months Benefits from AUTO ID accuracy ATA RFID parts marking program : 1,2 billion USD 2011 – 2030. A multi-stage rocket :

Stage 1 Cabin inventory Stage 2 Maintenance Stage 3 Connected Aircraft
