IUTRODUcTIONThis fun book shows you how to make simple paper planes that fly brilliantly, every time. Ihey are all quick to fold, asy to remember and can be madeanr, rhere, any time, with ordinary paper.

Learn how to make your favorite planes we ll, then teach them to your friendsand playgames with them or have competitions -there are some ideas at theback of the book. Sharing paper planes is the best way to enjoy them. But, a paper plane will only flywll if it is carefully made and proeerlythrown. So, before folding your first plane, read the next two pages to see whatyou mustdo, and howandwhy. Agood paperplane rs notonlygood fun, butalso good science .

REa.D TntsNere ar some important tips to help make your planes fly we ll.. Fold slowly and neatly A plane will not fly if it is badly made. Try folding aplane twice to learn how to make it we ll.. Press every crease firnly Sharp creases hlp a plane to cut through the airsmoothly. Soft creases do not.. Fold on a table Don't fold on your lap, in the air or on a soft surface such as acarpet.. Follow the drawtngs carefully llhen folding, keep checking that your mode Ilooks like the step-by-step drawings. lf it doesn't. . . don't panic Just unfoldone or two of the new creases until your model looks like an earlier drawing, then try again.. Read the "Throwtng" tnstructtons, A carefully made plane will not flywell if it isthrown incorrectly. Some need to b thrown hard, others gently. Some are held anthrown in strange ways.

Adjusting the Wings1 , lf your plane flies quickly upwards, stops and drops like a stone (called"stalling') . , . curl the back of the wingsgently downwards. This will maketheplane fly level.2. lf your plane flies quickly downwards(called "nose diving') . . , curl the back ofthe wings gently upwards. This will makethe plane fly level.3. lf your plane still doesn't fly . . . adjustthe angle across the wings (called the"dihedral').Try these dihedral shapes tosee which is best for your plane'

Who would eyer guess that this weird design was a plane? ltis only two creases, but thrown properly this amazing gliderflies we ll. Lock the paper to make a ring at th front, thenadjust it to make a neat ctrcle. Use a square of paper, prefzraly thin. Airmail paper is good.

ThrowingHold by placing your middle flngeron top of the paper. Raise your armhigh above your head and releasegently forward with a slight flick. ltwill never fly if it is thrown hard orlaunched at the wrong angle, sopractice differenlways to throw it.5

Flat plan es are usually very unstable, but the Flat Flye r willfly a long way at high speed. lts strange shape means thatit must be held and thrown in a strange way, so read theThrowing rnstructions carefully. Use European A4 paper orAmerican 8 Uzx 1 1 paper, creased into quarters.
