I dont think that sourceA is very useful aboutthe American West

because it is just adescription of theIndians, and how theyact, its not really aboutthe American West. Also

I think it is the opinion ofa journalist who had justtravelled across theplains, he hadnt livedthere or stayed there fora long period of time he

just went and saw a bitof it.

I dont think it is a very usefulsource about the AmericaWest. It is only an opinion of ajournalist. The journalist

shows that he does notunderstand the Indian way oflife when he says Thesepeople must die out.Because the Native American

culture is very different to hisown he writes negativelyabout it. However there issome fact in the sourcebecause he said I saw the

owners sitting around thedoors of their lodges at theheight of the planting season.From the source it seems likehe did not spend a lot of time

observing the Indians..

I think that Source A is a useful source of evidence.Horace Greeley wrote the description and said that

they just sat around and did nothing. This is not truebecause they had to keep themselves alive and lookafter each other. They did this by hunting for therefood and cooking it. They also made essential items

out of anything for everyday living. Horace Greeleysaid there is no hope for the Indians but there was.They helped themselves but to other people theycouldnt see this. They thought they were uselessand could not live in there habitat properly so they

wanted them to die out.

No this source does not prove that the

Plains Indians were cruel as in the eyes ofthe uneducated white man I suppose hesaw it as a form of torture. But this Indiancustom was kinder than any as it allowed

the old person to die outside with theelements and return to their mother (theearth). And it allowed the families to saygoodbye without the burden of lookingafter someone that was slowing thefamilies down from surviving.

Source C and D do show that the Plains Indians

and the white Americans had the same attitude

towards the buffalos. The Indians and Americansare both killing the buffalos. The Indians need the

buffalo for a number of things such as: tongue

hairbrush, skin - tipi, etc. The Americans are

shooting the buffalos whereas the Indians are

spearing them. The Americans didnt like the

buffalos they thought they should become extinct.

Sources C and D both show different attitudestowards hunting buffalo. Source C showsIndians hunting buffalo. They used the buffalo

for as much as they could find such as using thetongue for a hairbrush, using the fur and hide forclothes and their tipis and using buffalo dung inspecial ceremonies which they smoked. Buffalowas their main type of food and was very

important to the Indian way of life. This wasdestroyed by acts of government by ordering themassacre of the Plains buffalo. Source D showsa train going through the Plains with gunmen onboard. The gunmen shot at and killed most

buffalo insight leaving the Indians with nothing.When the Indians moved to reservations theironly source of food was either crops which theyfarmed or food which they bought with the credit

they received from the government.

The way of life of the Egyptians helped them a lot tomake advances in medicine. Firstly before dead bodieswere to be mummified one ritual was to take out certainorgans to preserve them in jars this was calledembalming. This helped the Egyptians because it gavethem an idea of what the human body looked like inside.Secondly the Egyptians believed that a person becameill because the channels in their body were blocked. This

idea was thought of because the river Nile. Irrigationchannels were dug to bring water to crops and whenthese channels became blocked the crops died. This is areason why they thought this about the channels in thehuman body. Thirdly the priests in the temples

encouraged people to keep clean. This of courseprevented dirt and germs infecting the body to causeillness. Finally the Egyptians were a very rich society andtraded with other countries often. This allowed new ideasof treatment of different herbs to be used.

In the middle ages people

were still using Greekideas such as Galen. Theyfollowed Galen becausehe studied the body andquoted that it wasbeautifully designed andmust have been createdby God. This would havegreatly supported religiousbeliefs at the time. Greekideas were accepted quitefar into the middle agesbecause they alsobelieved their ideas werelogical such as the fourhumours being out ofbalance.

Greek ideas were used alittle in the middle ages.The Greeks believed thatyour body had fourhumours and when theywere unbalanced you gotill this idea was used inthe middle ages to. Therewasnt that many Greekideas around much

though because medicinehad advanced quite a lotand lots of the Greekideas had been forgotten.

The Greek ideas about medicine were acceptedin the middle ages but the most accepted onewas the four humours and bleeding. The four

humours wereIf any of these were out ofbalance you would get ill. In Greek timesbleeding was used as a last resort but inmedieval times it was commonly used. Butpeople aslo believed in different causes for

example God, planets and bad air were just afew. They believed that if they were ill God waspunishing them. If the planets were aligned in acertain way they would become ill from that. Andbad air was used because they thought thesmell of rotting food would make them ill. Theybelieved that bad things lived in and causes thesmell and if they breathed it in they wouldbecome ill.
