The period May 24-27 will see the staging of Australia’s largest ever manufacturing industry event when the entire 30,000 square meter exhibition area of the Melbourne Exhibition Centre will be occupied by three major trade shows being presented side by side. They are Ausplas, Austech and National Manufacturing Week.

Ausplas–Australia’s national event for the plastics industry brings the latest advances in plastics processing and ancillary equipment shown alongside presentations of materials and masterbatches and processing technology.

There will be more exhibitors showing equipment in operation, particularly injection moulding and robotics than was the case in 2008 and the showing by suppliers of ancillary has almost doubled. Many companies which stood out from 2008 due to the onslaught of the GFC have returned in 2011.

The scope of the show has been broadened by the inclusion of new exhibitors such as Hemingstone from Taiwan who will show bag and pouch-making machinery and materials handling equipment will also feature heavily.

New to Ausplas this year is the involvement from the plastics fabrication sector with a number of companies demonstrating welding techniques and applications for plastics in manufacturing, mining, building and construction. The use of fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites plays an integral role in the challenging but highly rewarding task of replacing various costly metal fabrication techniques such as Die Casting. Long Fibre Thermoplastic (LFT) composites coupled with best moulding practices and parts engineering can close the performance gap between the more traditional Short Fibre Thermoplastic (SFT) composites and their metal counterparts.Complex part geometries make continuous fibre reinforcement or placement difficult or near impossible in all but simple, rectilinear, part geometries. Therefore, the reinforcing fibres used are chopped and randomly distributed in the polymer matrix to fill the part shape. However, these SFT’s offer only a fraction of the strength of continuous reinforcement. LFT composites are a means to approach the original promise of continuous fiber-reinforcement. Since fibre-reinforcement is inherently anisotropic, fibre-orientation must be tailored to match load direction. Furthermore, the process of LFT injection moulding differs from standard SFT techniques and, if considered correctly, allows LFT composites to reach their potential. Several examples of real parts and designs in various industrial sectors are shared to highlight these considerations. Since manufacturability is often the first and last concern, the successful injection-moulding of LFT composite parts is described, including modern tools for part and mold design.

Another Lindner for shredding post consumer plasticse introduction of state-of-the-art Universo 2200 shredders from one of the world’s leading manufacturers of industrial waste shredding machines, Austrian based Lindner Recyclingtech, continues to introduce a raised level of productivity in plastics recovery for a major Australian plastics company.e Martogg group have recently ordered their third Universo 2200 Lindner Power Shredders for the shredding plastic film; mixed plastics, and post industrial recycling.

e slow running single sha Universo shredders have a throughput capacity of up to 7 tonne per hour with output granulation of approximately 13mm upto 80mm.

Flight PlasticsFor over 30 years Flight Plastics have been supplying rigid sheet and rollstock into the Australasian market, initially from their production facility in Rongotai, Wellington, NZ where they started with one sheet line.

In the 1990s they ventured into the European market and established a factory in Winchester UK where today they have 5 rollstock lines including a state of the art APET line producing foodgrade product from post consumer waste.

In 2005 Flight purchased Extruded Plastics in Adelaide and have since moved the operation into a 10000m2 facility and expanded their sheet extrusion capability from 2 to 4 extruders from which they can produce sheet over 2000mm in width and rollstock down to 0.25mm.

Geoff Pearce has been the GM of Flight’s Extrusion Division for the majority of these 30 years and it is due to his leadership that Flight Plastics finds itself the leading custom extruder in the ANZ market.
