MAJOR OPERATION

Did you see the concrete trucks lined up at Blacktown

on Thursday?

It took 75 truckloads of concrete to create the first

part of our level 3 floor slab. All up, we poured 430

cubic metres of concrete or enough to fill 16,000 milk

crates (if they didn’t have holes in them).

In the new acute services building, this level will

include the new main entry and theatres, and it was

the theatre slab that was going in this week.

Needless to say it was a major operation…

theatre.

DIGITAL FUTURE BEHIND THE SCENES

READ ALL ABOUT IT

THEATRE GOERS: Mount Druitt Hospital stage 2 includes a

new digital theatre, now handed over to the hospital team

for commissioning,

It’s part of the surgical expansion which includes the pre-

admission clinic and recovery ward.

We think it scrubs up pretty well.

POWER SOURCE: Commissioning continues on our

new MRI machine at Mount Druitt.

Team members Fotini and Patrick discuss the next

steps with specialist technician Sandeep ahead of its

opening later this year.

DRUG HEALTH NEWS: Our

Centre for Addiction Medicine

at Mount Druitt will be a

standalone facility dedicated

to treatment, counselling and

support for drug, alcohol and

other clients.

Services will start to open in

the new facility from early

September and clients can

read all about it in the patient

information flier now

available from the CAMs

team, or on the project

website.

MAROONED

CHOOSE LIFE

HOPE LIVES HERE: The Relay for Life team from NSW

Cancer Council were drumming up support in Hospital Street

this week, with some help from Dougal the Bear. They will be

back for another Purple Day on 18 October. For more info,

and details about the Blacktown relay, visit relayforlife.org.au

FLYING THE FLAG: Our car park crane has a new name

flag and, true to our word, it’s maroon.

You may remember that we lost a State of Origin bet with

our Queensland-mad colleagues on who would take out

the coveted trophy this year, so we have dutifully supplied

and installed the maroon flag.

As far as we’re concerned, it’s just dark pink, Very, very

dark pink.

Katherine from NSW Ambulance with Alix, Suzanne, Luke and Steve in ED

Despite a massive spike in gastro, flu and winter

presentations, our Blacktown Hospital Emergency

Department managed to discharge 100% of

non-admitted patients within four hours on

Saturday 19 August.

Emergency head A/Prof Reza Ali said it was a

significant achievement on one of the year’s

busiest days, and proved that Project RED

initiatives are making a real difference to patients.

“A 100% score would not have been achievable

without the changes we’ve made through Project

RED,” Reza said.

“This is a direct result of the team approach, and

the hard work of all staff in embracing changes like

the morning huddle, in and out flow roles, and our

new SAU and EDSSU.”

Project RED sponsor Luke Elias said the numbers

demonstrate that Project RED is really influencing

the amount of time patients spend in ED, and how

efficiently they are triaged, treated and

discharged, or transferred.

Luke said the numbers were important, but only

because they validate the improvements to the

patient experience.

“People can get focused on the emergency

treatment performance numbers, and they are

important to monitor and evaluate our

performance, but when we look at the data we’re

really looking for improvements in patient

experience,” Luke said.

“This week we’ve clearly seen that improvement.

“The stats indicate we are continuing to head in

the right direction, even taking into account the

winter factors, and that’s hands down due to the

efforts of our staff.

“We are grateful to the medical leadership of Dr

Reza Ali, our nursing leaders Bronwyn Merritt,

Joanne Scullion and Aileen Tadiaman, and to all

our ED and hospital staff for rising to the

challenge,” Luke said.

Congratulations team - job well done!
