Dear Reader,

Over the past several years, Daetwyler Cables hasevolved into a global provider of high-quality totalsolutionsfortheelectricalinfrastructureofcommercialbuildingsandFTTxnetworks.Notonlyisthenumberofourmarketsgrowing,butalsotheportfolioofourservices.Itnowrangesfromplanningandconsultingtoharnessingandlogisticstoturnkeyinstallationsandcross-bordermulti-siteprojects.

SometimesIamaskedwhichofourmarketsisthemostchallenging.Thisquestionisdifficulttoanswer.IcouldsayGermany,forinstance.Becausetherethecontractsfortotalsystemsareoftenbrokendownintomultiplesmallcontracts,andintheworstcaseweareleftwithcontending for mere meters of cable or kilogramsofcopper – inspiteofhaving provided engineeringservices.Dubaiwouldalsocometomind.Globalcom-petitionisstiffthere,andcontractsfortheprestigiousprojectsthattypifythecountryareoftenawardedatthevery lowestprices.Thailandalsocomestomind,anationinwhichpoliticalunrestisapartofdailylife,causingprojectdelaysagainandagain.

Complete solution from one sourceunilan®ModularSolution(MS)wasused.Thesystem,according to Keller, was chosen for its good con-nection technology and electrical and mechanicalproperties:“ShieldedCategory7AS/FTPcableofferssuchhighperformancethatthewholesystemcanberelativelyeasilyextendedtoClassFAifeverrequired.“Otheraspectswerealsoimportanttothelifesciencescompany:“Wewantacompletesolutionfromasinglesource.Thisincludes,forexample,mountingrailsandfastenersandIP67outletsandconnectors,“tellstheHeadofITOperation.“Andlastbutnotleast,wewerealsosatisfiedwiththeclearnamingconventionsanddescriptionsofallsystemcomponentsandtheshortdeliverytimesbythemanufacturer.“

Siegfriedhandledthedesignandengineeringofthesystem itself. Daetwyler Cables acted as a consul-tant, contributing its know-how to help define therequirements for the new system and produce theuserspecification.AlpiqInTecWestAGinstalledthenew network and was responsible for quality con-trol.The team led byThomas Bitterli specialises insolutionsinthefieldofbuildingsystemsandfacilitymanagementaswellasintransportationtechnologyandpower-supplysystems.

Siegfried Ltd relies on system solution by Daetwyler Cables for new laboratory building

In autumn 2009 the Siegfried Group put communi-cations cabling by Daetwyler Cables into service in the new laboratory building at its headquarters in Zofingen, Switzerland. The system provides Siegfried a long-term investment protection.

AttheheadquartersoftheSiegfriedGroupinZofingen,aglobalplayerinthelifesciencesindustry,thethree-storeyedglassvolumeofthenewlaboratorybuildingstandsoutprominently.SinceSeptember2009ithasbeenservingover100ofthe700-someemployeesatZofingenasastate-of-the-artenvironmentforanalyti-calandchemicalresearchanddevelopment.Siegfrieddescribesthenewbuildingas“asuccessfulsymbiosisofmoderntechnologyandcostefficiency”.

This description also applies to the new communi-cations infrastructure by Daetwyler Cables, which issopowerfulthatitrepresentsawell-protectedlong-terminvestmentforSiegfried.“Whenweplannedthecommunicationscablingforthenewlabbuilding,weadaptedthecurrentstandardtothestateoftheart,“saysRainerKeller,HeadofITOperationatSiegfriedLtd.

Like the previous standard, it prescribes a qualifiedinfrastructure for all new buildings and rehabilita-tion projects – meaning completely measured andrecorded–butonethatprovidesmuchhighertrans-missionrates.The20-yearunilan®systemguaranteeunderscoresthelong-termqualitystandard.Besidesthe high reserve capacity, the new cabling systemofferstheoptiontointegratevoiceoverIP(VoIP)andpoweroverEthernet(PoE).

An infrastructure for all applicationsTheAlpiqInTecteaminstalledfloordistributionracksfor thegenericcablingsystemontwofloorsof thebuilding.Liketheother36racklocationsontheSieg-friedsite,theseareconnectedtobothdatacentreswithredundant12-fibreOM3orOM/3+optoversal®fibreopticcable.1000MSCategory6Acopperportsareavailableforthenetworkinthelabbuilding.Ho-rizontalcablingwasexecuted, inconformancewiththe standard, with some 60 kilometres of uninet®7702 4P data cable, which offers reserves of up to1200megahertz.Workstationsareservedviaracewaysbeneaththewindowsills.Thetypicalworkstationhasthreeoutletboxes,someofwhicharebuiltintospeciallabequipment.

In the Crane House South, the developers offer tenants a modern communications infrastructure based on a unilan® system solution by Daetwyler Cables. The safety cabling also comes from the portfolio of the international manufacturer.

AtRheinauhafeninCologne,Germany,amodernbusinessandresidentialcentreistakingform.TheCraneHouses,visiblefromafarwiththeirglassfaçadesand”arms“cantileveringovertheriver,arealreadyconsideredanewlandmarkoftheRhinemetropolis.OwnerandoperatorofCraneHouseSouth,whichwascompletedin2009,isSüdlicheKranhausGmbH,ajointventurebetweenDeutscheImmobilienDevelopment GmbH and moderne stadt GmbH.The new building has a grossfloorareaofnearly20000squaremetreson16floors.Ninestandardfloors,withgalleryandgroundfloorbelow,formthe“tower”,crownedbythe“arm”formedbyfiveupperfloors–allwithflexiblepartitioninginaccordancewithtenants‘wishesandhigh-classinteriors.

Besides the spectacular architecture and thesustainableenergyconcept,thenewbuildingisremarkableforitsintelligent,high-qualitytechni-calequipmentanditsadvancedsecurityconcept.Thisincludesahigh-performanceClassFAcommu-nicationsnetworkandsafetycablingfullytestedforextendedintegrityincaseoffire.BothofthesesystemsweresuppliedbyDaetwylerCables.

State-of-the-art communications systemForthenetworktechnology,theteaminchargedeliberatelychoseasolutionwithareservecapaci-tyofupto1000megahertz,representingasecurelong-term investment. Horizontal cabling wasexecutedinunilan®PrimeSolution(PS),suitablefor multimedia.The installation comprises 100kilometresofuninet®71504Pcopperdatacable,7200PSGG45modules,about420patchpanelsandmanagementpanels,and800floorboxesintheoffices.1700metresofOM312-fibreopticalcableisbuiltintothebackbone,connectedtoatotalof56fibreopticboxesinthefloordistribu-tionracks.

“ThemoderninfrastructurewasdesignedtofollowtherequestsofthemaintenantanddevelopedinclosecoordinationbetweenourengineersandthetopITmanagersofthetenant,”reportsFriedhelmKörner,wholeadstechnicalprojectmanagementatmodernestadtalongwithhiscolleagueHans-JoachimFranken.Themaintenantisalargeinter-nationalsocietyoflawyers,whichmovedintotheentire“arm”inspring2009.Körnerexplainsthat

allcommunicationservicesandbuildingcontrolsystems, including regulation and surveillance,areintegratedintothenewcablingsystem:“Tobeabletorespondtotheneedsandwishesofothertenants regarding interiorsystems,we installedthesametechnologyinthestandardfloors.”Inthepatchcabinetsthecablingisprearrangedfor the patch arrays and already measured. Forbothcommunicationsandpowersupply,tenantshave plug-and-play floor boxes with cable re-servesintheoffices.Theexact locationscanbeadjustedatshortnoticetomeetanyneed.

Investment for the futureThecontractorElektroMeissnerIndustriemonta-genGmbHinstalledalltheelectricalequipmentinthebuildingforthegeneralcontractorZüblinAG. Dirk Erben, IT specialist hired by Meissner,gainedhisfirstexperienceworkingwithunilan®PrimeSolutionGG45byDaetwylerCablesonthisjob. He is particularly satisfied with the qualityof the connection technology, which can alsohandleconventionalRJ45plugs:“WiththeGG45module,youhavenointerferenceandthereforeno signal corruption at high frequencies.Thatmakes this connector type very interesting forfutureapplications.”

FriedhelmKörneremphasises,aboveall,thehighsecurity of the investment in the new cablingsystem:“Weofferourtenantsacommunicationsinfrastructurethatwillstillbeuptodateregardingperformanceandflexibilityinfiveyears.”

Fire safetyFor supplying power to the safety systems inCraneHouseSouth,ElektroMeissnerIndustrie-montagen exclusively used safety cable andfastenercomponentsfromthepyrosys®portfolioofDaetwylerCables,includingover18kilometresofceramic-insulatedlow-voltageandhigh-vol-tage cable with E30 to E90 extended integrityaswellassome1400SASandHermannclamps.Thissystemensuresreliablepowersupplytothefire-alarm,electro-acoustic,sprinkler,emergencylighting,andsmoke-evacuationsystemsandto

elevators for the building occupants and thefirebrigade.Thesystemistestedtoensurethatthese various safety systems will reliably sup-portevacuationofoccupantsandinterventionbythefirebrigadeforupto90minutes intheeventoffire.

The recently opened Designer Outlet Salzburg is a mecca for brand-conscious bargain hunters in the capital city. Even in terms of safety systems, the im-pressive shopping complex offers its visitors brand names only.

September 10, 2009, saw the opening of a newshoppingdestinationinSalzburg.The28000-square-metredesigneroutlet,developedbyMcArthurGlenandWienerStädtischeVersicherung,offersover100internationaltopdesignerlabelsatdiscountsof30to70percent.AmongthestoresarefamousbrandnamessuchasJilSander,St.Emile,andBurlington.A total of some 135 million euros was invested tobuildDesignerOutletSalzburg.

High safety standardsSafetyofshoppersandemployeeswasaprimecon-cernduringthedesignandconstructionofDesignerOutletSalzburg.Fortheinstallationoftheelectrical

systems in the building–includingtheinteriorsof the individual shops– the general contrac-tor, Swietelsky Bauge-sellschaft m.b.H., hiredSiemens Bacon GmbH& Co KG Linz (renamedELIN GmbH & Co KG in2009) and Siemens Ba-conGmbH&CoKGSalz-burg.SiemensBaconwasresponsible for severalinstallations includingemergency lighting, fire alarm, smoke and heatexpulsion, and electro-acoustic systems. For thecablingofthesesystemsSiemensBaconreliedoncertifiedsystemsolutionsbyDaetwylerCables.

The new Airrail Cen-teratFrankfurtAirport,a joint project of IVGImmobil ien AG andFraport AG, stretches660 metres across theentire ICE peripheralstation.Duetoitsfutu-ristic design, the newbuilding is considereda milestone of modernarchitecture. Brasil: São Paulo quadruples the rail transports with Subway quality

The current expansionof the metropolitantransportation in SãoPaulo, to be concludedbefore the World Cup2014,isthemajorpublictransportationprojectinBrazil.Until2011,theGo-vernment of São Paulointendtoinvestthroughthe MetropolitanTrans-portation Bureau, more

than7billioneurosintheSubwaynetworks,SãoPaulo’sMetro-politanTrains Company (CPTM) and Metropolitan Company ofUrbanTransportation (EMTU). China: New plant for BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd.

BMWBrillianceAutomotiveLtd.isbuildinganewplantwith30000squaremetresofproductionspaceatShenyanginLiaoningprovince.ThefirstvehicletobemanufacturedatthefactorywillbeabrandnewBMWmodelthatgoesunderthecodename“F18”andisdesignedprimarilyfortheChinesemarket.Thecompanyisinvesting200millioneurosinthenewplant,thebiggestautomobilefactoryinChina.

BMWBrillianceAutomotivechoseahigh-speedunilan® cabling system by Daetwyler Cablesbecauseof itshighqualityandgoodshielding.Thiscablingsystem,installedattheendof2009,provides transmission rates of up to 1000 me-gahertz and meets all requirements of 1- and10-gigabitEthernetstandards(1000base-T,10Gbase-T).Duetothedoublecableshieldingwithpairandbraidedscreens,thesysteminherentlyensures high stability of the network, provideseffective protection against interference fromexternalsignalsandbetweencables,andoffersgreatreservecapacity.

Inrecentyears,efficientbuildingmanagementhasbecomeamajortrendintherealestatesector.Thisincludes so-called technical facility managementsupported by intelligent building automation. In-tegrated building automation brings together allrelevantbuildingsystems,suchaslighting,shading,ventilation, temperature control, and air conditio-ning,andcontrolstheminaccordancewiththewea-therandseason.KNXisthepredominantstandardforbuildingautomation.

CurrentstudiesshowthatusingKNXtointegrateabuildinganditssystemscandeliverenergysavingsof up to 50 percent. KNX building automation is

therefore well suited to help meet the incre-asingly demanding standards for energy

consumptionofbuildings–andtohelpreach the ambitious targets for cli-

mateprotection.

Study shows energy savings of 50 percentA research project conducted at BremenTechnicalSchool shows the extent of the potential energy sa-vings.ThebuildingstudiedintheprojectistheCentreforComputerScienceandMediaTechnologies(ZIMT),which was equipped with controls and regulatingequipment for heating and lighting.The evaluationincludedacomparisonofdatameasuredbeforeandafterKNXwasinstalled.

Twoidenticalclassroomsservedastestrooms.Oneofthem was equipped with a conventional installationandtheotherwithKNXcontrol.Theresultsafterfouryearsofmeasurements:KNXcontrol reducesenergyconsumptionbyafull50percent.

Thustheinvestmentinabuildingautomationsystempaysoffquickly.BremenTechnicalSchoolcalculatedthatforannualconsumptionof230000kWh,theinstal-lationofKNXcontrolwillpayforitselfwithinayear.

The German Central Association of the ElectricalTechnology and Electronics Industry (ZVEI) con-ducted a study called ”Potential energy savingsthroughmodernelectricalsystems“.ThestudyshowsthatthefollowingenergysavingscanbeachievedwithKNX:

• upto45percentwithKNXshadingcontrol• upto50percentwithKNXindividualroomcontrol• upto60percentwithKNXventilationcontrol• upto80percentwithKNXlightingcontrol

Reducedenergyconsumptionbenefitsnotonlybuil-dingoperatorsandinvestors,butalsotheclimate.

Energy efficiency in office buildingsThebestwaytosaveenergyinofficebuildingsistocontrolandregulateelectricdevicesinaccordancewiththeiractualuse.Thedevicesshouldbeoperatedonlywhentheyareneeded.Forexample,lightingcanbeautomatedsothatthelightscomeononlywhenpeopleareintheroom.Thisistypicallyachievedbyusingproperlyplacedpresencesensorswithintegra-tedbrightnesscontrolandcentralswitching.

Today‘s presence sensors can do even more. Forexample,withanintegratedsensorforcontinuouslightingcontrolandoutputsfortemperaturecontrol,they can control the level of dimming of the lightfixture–inaccordancewithnaturallightlevels–aswellasthesettingforroomtemperature.Combinedwith automatic shading control, one can achieveglare-freeworkstations,constantlightingconditions,andapleasant indoorclimate.Throughthe intelli-gentnetworkingof lighting,shading,temperaturecontrol,andventilation,onecanrealiseevenfurthersavingswhenroomsareunoccupied.

Less complexityInrecentdecadesKNXmanufacturershaveoutdoneoneanotherwithproductsthatoffermoreandmorefunctions.Thisnotonlyaddstothecomplexitywhenstartingtousethesystem,italsoaddstothesalespriceofeachpieceofKNXequipment.
