BWF Launches FirstCPD Scheme In UK ForThe Joinery AndWoodworking Industry

The first CPD (continuing professional

development) scheme for the joinery and

woodworking industry was launched at

W12 (October 2012) by the British

Woodworking Federation (BWF).

Run by the BWF’s Woodworking

Industry Training Forum (WITForum), the

CPD programme offers all those working

within the joinery and woodworking

industry the opportunity to develop new

skills and to gain recognition for training

and personal development.

Sign Up For FIRA’sNew EU TimberRegulation AwarenessCourse

On 3rd March 2013, a new EU Timber

Regulation, which will affect the entire

furniture supply chain, comes into force.

The EU Timber Regulation (EUTR) was

initiated due to increasing concerns over

unsustainable forest management practices

and illegal logging. Studies have suggested

that approximately 20% of timber and

timber products, entering the European

market, originate from an illegal source

(WWF 2012:

http://barometer.wwf.org.uk/what_we_do/

government_barometer/the_eu_timber_fo

otprint/eu_wood_imports/).

Essentially, the EU Timber Regulation

(EUTR) prohibits the sale of illegally

harvested timber and wooden products

such as certain items of furniture on to the

European market. The Regulation defines

companies who first place timber and

timber products on the European market

as ‘Operators’ and requires them to

implement a robust, due diligence system

in order to identify, manage and mitigate

the risk of sourcing illegally harvested

timber or timber products. The EUTR also

establishes obligations for ‘Traders’, who

buy and sell timber and timber products

within the European market, to maintain

sufficient records to enable supply chain

traceability.

FIRA plans to hold a series of training

sessions, aimed at those within the UK

furniture industry. These courses will cover

important issues such as:

• The roles of organisations within the

furniture supply chain

• Obligations of ‘Operators’ and ‘Traders’

• Measures and procedures for

performing satisfactory due diligence

• Maintaining records and other

documentation for supply chain

traceability

• Responsible timber purchasing best

practice

• The roles of ‘Monitoring

Organisations’ and ‘Competent

Authorities’

• The role of Chain of Custody

certification schemes

FIRA’s one-day EU Timber Regulation

Awareness course is specifically designed

for importers, compliance managers,

quality managers and procurement.

Upcoming EU Timber Regulation

Awareness course dates

• 24 January 2013

• 14 February 2013

T.M. Machinery Sales, best known as

UK agents for the Striebig range of

vertical panel saws, have entered into a

distribution agreement with Biesse UK

to sell, service and provide spare parts

for the artisan range of Viet S1 and S2

wide belt sanders.

The move will give Viet, which became

part of the Biesse Group in 2011, access to

the large number of small and medium size

manufacturers who make up T.M

Machinery’s core customer base. This is an

important market sector for the Viet range.

Matthew Pearce, a director of T.M.

Machinery, said: “The agreement with

Biesse makes excellent sense. Viet has been

synonymous with high quality wide belt

sanding and materials finishing since 1953

and leads the market in technological

development.

“We will be able to give Biesse access to

small and medium size manufacturers,

while our service division, T.M. Services,

has extensive experience of servicing,

refurbishing and providing spare parts for

wide belt sanders.”

Steve Bulmer, managing director MD of

Biesse UK said: “Viet’s attention to design

detail and build quality has made it a

market leader in wide belt sanding, with

some 380 machines already sold in the UK

and Ireland.

“Our agreement with T.M. Machinery

will allow us entry to a market sector in

which they are specialists, while their

service division’s long involvement with

wide belt sanders will give existing and

potential Viet users added confidence.”

Biesse UK and T.M. Machinery are

holding a joint workshop exhibition, a

hands-on event giving customers the

opportunity to experience the Viet range at

first hand and speak to sanding experts.

The event will be held at Biesse’s Daventry

Tech Centre from February 26 to March 1.

On show will be the versatile Viet S1 and

S2 models. The S1 machine will feature a

combination head with two rollers for

calibration and pre-sanding plus a full

electronic sanding pad followed by a Tynex

brush for maximum finishing capability. It

also features inverter control of the abrasive

belt and conveyor belt speeds for maximum

flexibility. Touch screen controls are

provided for operator ease and

speed of use.

The Viet S2 is a

highly sophisticated

machine, described

as the ultimate in

surface finishing. The

machine on show

combines a fully

electronic cross belt

sanding head

followed by a

combination head

with roller and

electronic segmented

pad for delicate

finishing, and a

further electronic

segmented pad head

for final finishing. Belt

blowers, finishing

brushes and turbo panel

cleaners are incorporated

for the complete panel finishing solution.

Program storage and retrieval along with

intuitive controls are provided via the use of

a 15” touch screen.

The Italian manufacturer leads the

market in technological development in

wide belt sanding and has many patents,

ensuring its machines continue to rise to

the challenge of the ever-more demanding

requirements of material finishing.

Recent accolades include the Sequoia

Awards for Technological Development,

given for Viet’s patented HP (high

performance) pad at the Atlanta Show in

2011.

For those unable to attend the February

workshop event, Viet demonstration

machines will continue to be available at

Biesse UK’s Daventry Tech Centre.

Open days Tuesday February 26 to March 1.

“20 years ago Biesse Group UK Ltd

started trading in January 1993; within

a few weeks we had sold a “BIESSE

ROVER 335”, to Moores Furniture

Group Ltd based in Wetherby. 20 years

on, this machine is still installed and

working alongside a number of other

Biesse group machines; the latest being

a “Biesse Skipper 130” installed in the

early part of 2012. We estimate that to

date, the Rover 335 at Moores has

probably processed in excess of

3,000,000 panels! Not a bad investment.

The average price of a machine from

Biesse back in 1993 was approx. £65,000;

which in today’s terms would be £106,000;

but in reality because of the improvements

in manufacture, design and standardisation

across the broad portfolio and the huge

investment Biesse SPA has made in its

plant in Pesaro, our average machine price

in 2013 is still £65,000; even though we

produce machines closer to £40,000 for

processing Kitchen carcases and doors!

(*BiesseFact – a tailor made Biesse CNC

can come off our production line every 2

hours)

So what else has changed in 20 years?

Well for a start I had hair then! But

seriously Biesse UK started with three

employees, of whom two are still here, me

and John; our turnover in the first year was

approximately £2 million, while in 2012 we

finished the year close to £20 Million

turnover with 37 employees.

The Biesse Group Spa has been in

business for more than 40 years now, while

present in the UK with the subsidiary for

the last 20 of those and things have

changed dramatically during that time; but

innovation has always been at the forefront

of the Biesse mission, in fact you could say

we are game changers, not just the

machines, because that’s not the whole

story, but let’s start there;

When you think of Beam saws of today,

“Selco” were the company that set the scene

with the ground breaking WN series. New

on a market which was already crowded,

they launched the first fully CNC beam saw.

Today we are still setting the standards,

moving high technology concepts into

everyday life, with the introduction of the

“Twin Pusher” onto even the smallest of

our range the “SEKTOR” Series. This really

starts to bring “one-

off”

production

back to the

beam saw.

Selco haven’t stopped

there, with the Twin

Pusher now evolving

into the “Multi

Pusher” for our

angle plants, this

brings even greater

benefits of increased

productivity with

complex patterns.

The “SKIPPER”

was the first CNC drilling machine to

process two panels simultaneously with

zero set up time; now a format embraced by

other machine manufacturers. While

imitation is the best form of flattery, they

are yet to match the simplicity and

reliability of the Biesse patents used in this

type of machine.

The “UNIWIN” is another game changer,

bringing a complete window factory into

one machine, and making windows

component by component in a truly batch

one process.

The “STREAM” edgebanding machine

with a unique patented gluing section

addressing known industry issues with glue

application. Ask us

why it was the

bestselling double-

sided edgebander in

the UK in 2012.

“BREMA” the first

vertical through feed

processing centre, again ideal

for batch-one production and with an

unrivalled ability for the automated

insertion of hardware.

“VIET” premium sanders with game

changing patents for finish and lacquer

sanding. Consider that Viet have been

making high gloss polishing system since

1953, shows the kind of expertise that is

available at this award winning company.

(See page 3)

This is just a short list that quickly came

to mind, but the list goes on and on!

Biesse’s First 20 Years In The UK –Promoting Innovation Steve Bulmer MD of Biesse UK looks back to when Biesse Group set up in the UK.

So high quality and innovation comes as

standard with Biesse products, when you

then build in exceptional

price/performance ratio, it is no wonder

that more than 60% of our business each

year comes from customers with existing

Biesse products.

Having been with the Biesse subsidiary

since day one, it’s nice to look back with

nostalgia over the 20 years, but let’s be

blunt what’s of interest for us all is the

future. We all have to face that we live in

difficult trading conditions, where

consumers have a huge choice of where to

buy products and services. What excites me

is this is great news for us all; we are all

demanding value for money products with

great customer service; that’s why

everything we do here is with you in our

focus. We ask what you want, listen and are

striving every day to provide this. Proof

that we are moving in the right direction

is the increase in orders since

incorporating our “TOTAL CARE”

program. If you don’t know what this

is, it’s a customer care package created by

Biesse incorporating a 5-year warranty & a

5-year service program on all Biesse

machines. We also help you to tie up a few

of the loose ends you don’t want to think

about when buying a machine. Such as

organising the crane and offloading.

There are many companies with Biesse

machines still working after many years of

service just like Moores Furniture, which

demonstrate the reliability of our machines

and our confidence to offer a 5 year

warranty as standard on all new Biesse

machines, so feel free to ask more about

Total Care.

So what do you think?

• Does innovation improve productivity?

• Would a more reliable machine

improve your margins?

• Is performance at least as important as

the price?

If you would answer “YES” to any of

these questions then it’s likely you already

do business with Biesse; if not, you should

be giving us call now.

Don’t be mistaken we are not perfect and

we are certainly not arrogant, we do still

sometimes get it wrong; but it’s how we

react when something goes wrong, we are

decisive and proactive to your needs. We

have not yet met the standards we are

setting ourselves, but we are changing the

nature of machinery supply for the better in

the UK market. We still stock more spares

that any other machinery supplier in the

UK, approximately £2.5 million! Ask us

what it means for you?

Like I said earlier “innovation has always

been at the forefront of the Biesse mission”.

We innovate and it’s good news for you. “

S & I Manufacturing of Corby,

Northamptonshire, has recently

installed another two new

innovative Holz-Her machines – Pro-

Master 7223, CNC machining centre,

and a Cut 6120 Dynamic beam saw,

linked to a Barbaric 14 stack position

CSF storage system. It’s an indication

of their trust in Holz-Her

technology and backup service over

several years.

With 60 working hours a week

averaged over the last 10 years from their

existing Holz-Her CNC’s and

edgebanders, it is no wonder the decision

to invest again in Holz-Her was reached,

especially coupled with the highly

regarded Weinig service.

S & I Manufacturing is a very

successful and highly reputed bespoke

contractor, particularly focusing on top

quality shopfitting. The company was

established 21 years ago and has 20

employees, and operate from modern

premises in Corby. They believe in

providing personal, prompt and flexible

customer service, and aim to deliver high

quality, precision products – for which

they have gained customer repute. The

Company address the requirements of

contract shopfitting services, point of

sales displays, library and educational

furniture. They work with major design

houses, local authorities and large

retailers and they have a growing

customer list.

Their belief in delivering quality and

precision, bespoke

products is proven

by their large

continuous

investment in the

best brands of

German engineered

flexible panel

machines. They see

it as the guaranteed

way to achieve

customer

satisfaction. With the

Holz-Her Pro-

Master, for instance,

the new technology

bristles with innovative and unique

features: higher processing rates;

providing the ability to respond more

quickly to customer orders; extraordinary

precision to guarantee product finish;

concentration on practical requirements

for companies requiring a high degree of

flexible manufacturing of all shapes and

sizes they wish; and much more.

The Pro-Master has a Vario table

offering fully automatic table

positioning. The Vario head is a 5-axis

automatic positioning aggregate,

uniquely capable of automatic tool

changing. These features return super

fast, simplified setup and production.

The new Cut 6120 beam saw is linked

to a Barbaric 14-pack CSF storage system.

The new CNC storage system has been a

step-up in efficiency. As the panel leaves

the beam saw, a bar code label is applied

which is then swiped by a corresponding

bar code reader at the machine - within

seconds the machine will set itself and

run the program automatically.

Greater efficiency and productivity

growth is also achieved by the Barbaric

CSF Chaotic Storage System integration

with the Holz-Her 6120 Dynamic beam

saw. All in-store and out-of-store panels

are managed and optimised, resulting in

a three-fold increase in productivity, far

easier and more accurate stock

management, and vastly improved waste

optimisation of each panel. Says MD,

Ian Huggins, “Holz-Her’s optimisation

software is the best I’ve used, it has been

a ‘Godsend’, and impacts positively to the

whole production process, saving money

and increasing productivity at the same

time”.

Up to 65% of a panel cutting process

can be taken up by panel handling. The

advanced technology Barbaric system

removes this down time. It is capable of

reading the complete cutting job list and

facilitates the loading of the beam saw in

the most productive manner for

maximum efficiency. For example,

should the beam saw need to cut in book

heights, the Barbaric will stack a book

behind the pusher arm whilst the beam

saw is cutting. Once the beam saw has

completed its current job, the pusher

arm will lift and collect the awaiting

book. Whilst this is happening, the

Barbaric will continue to optimise its

storage area for the next job. As soon as

the pusher arm has cleared the loading

area it will start loading the next job. In

essence, the saw never has to wait for

panel loading, returning up to three

times greater productivity.

Should the panel stock run low the

CSF system will send an email to advise

more panels need to be ordered. Even

when the factory is closed, the Barbaric

will analyse the job list and organise the

most efficient way for the following day’s

production.

“The system has streamlined the

operation at S & I and made panel

production much more efficient and

price competitive”, says Ian Huggins,

“and the Weinig brand name has helped

massively to increase continued

confidence in our investment, guarantees

a prompt after-sales service, provides

technical solutions, and decreases

downtime”.

Speciality door manufacturer Enfield

Doors prides itself on delivering

exceptional and consistent quality,

both in service and product delivered

for its entire range of fire resistant

doors. When recent business growth

proved the need for the introduction

of new woodworking machinery, the

company expected the same values and

service from its chosen supplier.

Nigel Sill, managing director of Enfield

Doors, explains the process, “We are a very

traditional company who, in the past, have

always tried to use British suppliers and

manufacturers. Recently, business has

bloomed, we have been producing and

receiving orders for more door sets than

ever before. It became clear, therefore, that

we needed to be much more productive and

efficient. Essentially, this boiled down to

investing in advanced machinery which

would give us an edge over our

competitors.”

Partnering with the best in the market

“Working with fire resistant

doors is not the same as

working with your average

kitchen door. Our doors

can weigh anything up to around 100 kilos

each and so we have to invest in heavy duty

machines. They must be well engineered –

cheaper lightweight equipment just won’t

stand the test of time in our work

environment.

“Having been in this industry for a long

time it’s not a surprise that we already

knew of HOMAG. They have a trusted

name and a good reputation for providing

robust machines that can cope with heavy

use day in day out. After studying the

machinery on the market, we became more

and more confident that if anyone could

help us, HOMAG could.

“After making an initial enquiry with

HOMAG, we travelled to one of their

customers’ sites to see the machines we

were considering in action. This was a

valuable trip for us, not only to get a better

understanding of the equipment, but also

to discover first-hand what it was like to

deal with HOMAG UK.

“Following this, we went to HOMAG

UK’s headquarters in Castle

Donington where we saw the

machines in action again

and discussed our options

with our local salesman,

Roger Wilks and their

showroom

technicians. The two

machines we were

evaluating were the

HOMAG Venture

316 five axis CNC processing centre and a

HOMAG KAL 310 edgebander with a PUR

adhesive system.

“Their sales advice was very good, they

understood exactly what we wanted. It was

very clear that not only did they know what

they were talking about, but also that they

understood our business.

“Sophisticated machinery comes with

lots of options and there were quite a few

permutations available to us. They helped

us to decide which ones we would need

without trying to sell us things that we

wouldn’t – this helped build a real trust

between us.”

A clockwork installation“The machines arrived exactly on time in

early spring 2012. Obviously, we had to

clear a space in our factory, but other than

that there was very little disruption to our

work. HOMAG’s engineering experts

worked around us and the installation went

like clockwork without the loss of any

significant production time.

“Four of our staff went on a training

course at HOMAG UK to learn how to

operate the machinery to its maximum.

They came back feeling well informed and

ready to make the most of our new

equipment.”

Attracting new business“Since having HOMAG equipment in

our factory we have been able to confidently

quote for work with larger construction

companies. Previously, we couldn’t

approach them, because we just didn’t have

the capacity. Now we can now carry out

orders in much less time and to a higher

quality. Originally we had to create the door

sets by hand, with the Venture 316 we can

make them in a fraction of the time it used

to take and with a better quality finish.

“The five axis head on the Venture 316

works really well for us. It's extremely

powerful and allows us to run the machine

at high speeds without any issues which

has dramatically reduced our processing

time. HOMAG's woodWOP software

makes the machine easy to operate whether

it’s for large or one off orders.

“When it came to edgebanding, our

doors used to be done via traditional lipping

machines. The KAL 310 now handles our

larger orders in a quicker and more

effective way to a much higher standard of

finish. The PUR adhesive system supplied

by HOMAG provides a fantastic bond

between the door edge and the lipping with

an almost invisible glue line. The units on

the machine are more than capable of

coping with our heavy duty application.

“With our new equipment, we are

confident we will be able to double our

production rate whilst maintaining

exceptional quality standards. Once this is

achieved we estimate the equipment will

have paid for itself in under three years.

“Overall we’ve been delighted with

HOMAG. The service from them has been

very efficient and we are more than pleased

with the machines. In particular we are

impressed with how much thought has

gone into their design. HOMAG’s

engineers really know about wood and

understand what works best in a factory

environment. Whoever designed them, I

admire,” concludes Sill.

the AXYZ 4010 and 6010 machines

already installed. The AXYZ 8010 now

in operation has an impressive 2635mm

processing width that is capable of

handling over-size eight feed-wide and

similarly awkward sheet sizes with a

superior cut finish considered by this

company not to be achievable with

other smaller routing solutions.

Established in 2005, CNC Routing has

experienced rapid growth and

commensurate profitability in the ensuing

years, occupying five rather than the

original one production unit and employing

20 people in place of the original three.

Today, the company offers

customers an all-

embracing service

capability encompassing

in-house design,

manufacturing, assembly and

peripheral facilities like edge banding

and spraying.

At CNC Routing, the AXYZ 8010 router

is used primarily for long-run work

involving difficult or Jumbo-sized panels

that hitherto were unable to be processed

by companies with their own in-house

routing and cutting facilities. Materials

processed range from plywood and

composite woods to acrylic that can be cut

simultaneously by the three AXYZ routers

now installed. CNC Routing’s co-director

Julian Howl commented: ‘Since installation

in August of this year, the 8010 machine

has performed with consummate ease and

has helped reduce daily production time

from 24 to 16 hours whilst providing

output that equates to the capacity of four

machines rather than the three currently

installed.’

The AXYZ 8010 router in operation at

CNC Routing has a number of additional

production enhancements. These include

two carriages on the gantry, servo motors,

the latest AXYZ helical rack and pinion

drive system that employs multiple ‘teeth’

to spread the work load and consequently

significantly reduces machine wear and an

expanded 21-station ATC (Automatic Tool

Change) facility. According to Julian Howl,

‘the drive motors in particular give a

superior cutting capability to that

achievable with other

machines’.

AXYZ International has

the capacity to build

customised machines in specific sizes,

tooling configurations and material hold-

down options. Sizes of the customised

machines range from 1524mm (width) x

1219mm (length) in the 4000 Series up to

2635mm (width) x 15m (length) in the

8000 Series. All of the routers come with a

host of both standard and optional

production enhancements, including as

standard the latest AXYZ A2MC machine

control system, the AVS (AXYZ Vision

System) for optimum material alignment

and precise cutting and the enlarged multi-

station ATC (Automatic Tool Change)

facility.

Co-director at CNC Routing, Greg

McPhail added: ‘The fact that we now have

three AXYZ routers operating reflects the

confidence we have in both the machines

and the knowledge base of the AXYZ team

that ensured the smooth installation of the

latest router with minimal disruption to our

production. We are a company that is

“AXYZ through and through” and it is our

intention to purchase another 8010

machine in 2013.’

Leading supplier of high-

performance routing, cutting and

engraving solutions to the

furniture production, industrial

woodworking, joinery and panel

processing industries, AXYZ

International has expanded its

CNCRoutershop division.

The stock of CNC routing tools,

consumables and accessories held by this

division, all of which are available on

next-day delivery was already one of the

largest and most competitively priced

available. Now, following wider sourcing

of additional products from leading

quality suppliers in the UK and

Continental Europe, the division can

meet the requirements not only of AXYZ

machine owners but also those

companies which have other machines in

operation, regardless of their make or

source of supply. In addition, the division

is now advertising online a range of used

routing systems that will appeal to those

companies wishing to engage with

routing, cutting and engraving

technology but cannot at present invest

in new machinery.

Furthermore, for companies where the

volume and nature of the work

undertaken may now require higher

productivity levels, improved quality or

more flexible programming that cannot

effectively be met by the routing

technology already installed, the

expanded capabilities of the AXYZ

CNCRoutershop division can now

provide a much wider choice of tooling,

consumables and machine upgrade

options that could avoid the need for

companies to make such an investment,

particularly in view of the current

economic climate.

Supporting the expanded division is a

raft of service support facilities. These

include 24-hour online ordering and

technical advice, wall charts to assist

tooling specification and to determine

the correct cutting speeds for

specific materials and, as

required, printed

catalogues. The AXYZ

International team

of specialist

engineers lends

further support by

providing tailored

solutions to keep machines running

continuously and to avoid potentially

damaging and costly breakdowns.

Standard or bespoke training courses

that are conducted either at the

customer’s own facility or at the AXYZ

Training Centre complete the

CNCRoutershop division offering.

When Thames Valley was established by

two friends in 1973 to service bandsaw

blades, circular saws and plate saws,

their 'quality' philosophy entailed the

acquisition of Vollmer manual hand

grinding machines. Despite approaching

40 years of age, these machines are still

in operation, a clear indication of the

build quality and relevance to the

modern day business. As a saw service

and supplier of quality saws and tooling

to many industries it is imperative that

Thames Valley Saw Service invests in the

most up to date and highest

specification machinery available to

maintain its position and continued

growth in the marketplace. Over the

years new machinery has been

predominantly supplied by Vollmer

machine tools.

With over 35 years service at Thames

Valley Saw Service, Workshop Director Mr

Nigel Muttram discusses the evolution of the

company and industry in general: "Since I

have been at Thames Valley Saw Service, the

landscape of the industry has changed

beyond recognition. We used to have a fume

filled workshop with staff manually grinding

cutters, bandsaws and circular saw blades day

in, day out. To move with the times, we have

invested in automated machine tools that can

process our saw blades. With the evolution of

materials and the demand for ever faster

cycle times from the saw blades; the saw

blade tips and geometries have changed

drastically."

To emphasise this point, Mr Muttram

highlights the company's position as the

UK's only distributer for the full range of

Kanefusa products: "As a supplier and

service agent for the high quality range of

Japanese manufactured Kanefusa tools for

the wood and metal industries, we have to be

capable of machining all geometries on all

their cutting tools and saw blades. As

Kanefusa develops new geometries to

improve the performance of their saw blades,

we have to be capable of re-grinding these

geometries. So, when Kanefusa developed its

3DX, 6DX and 10DX range of TCT blades

with 3, 6 and 10 different tooth

geometries on each blade, our

Vollmer CHD270 was more than

up to the task of grinding the

complicated multiple geometries."

Since the Drayton based

company's inception, it has always

invested in high quality machine

tools and the 21 employee

business now has a complement

of Vollmer machines that includes

a CX100 for sharpening carbide

tipped saws, an ND230 robot

loaded CHD270 and a CHD250

for re-sharpening industrial

application TCT saws with more

demanding geometries, plus a

KRD710 for processing HSS saw

blades. The acquisition of the

KRD710 in 2000, signaled the end

of the manual machining era for

Thames Valley and its first step

toward automated CNC re-

sharpening. As Mr Muttram recalls: "We had

seven old Vollmer manual grinders for

sharpening HSS saws. They became

redundant following the arrival of the

KRD710 as it improved the quality whilst

providing productivity beyond that of our

seven older machines combined. By taking

these old machines out, we also had

considerably more floor space and our staff

could be freed up to conduct alternate tasks."

The arrival of the KRD710 also enabled

Thames Valley Saw Service to machine a

HSS blade in 10 minutes whereas the

previous time with the manual machine was

25 minutes per blade, the set-up times were

also drastically reduced along with the

benefits of wet grinding and CBN wheels to

generate a very accurate tooth geometry and

consistency in the quality of sharpening.

The success of the KRD710 paved the way

for further Vollmer investments and in 2004,

Thames Valley Saw Service acquired its first

large Vollmer machine, a CHD250. The

CHD250 replaced two ageing Vollmer CHP

machines, one was tasked with grinding the

face of tipped saw blades whilst the second

was grinding the tops. With two grinding

wheels in one machine, the CHD250

removed the two previous machines, and in

doing so, improved productivity and

workflow by eliminating excessive set-ups.

The benefits were more far fetching as Mr

Muttram states: "The CHD250 benefits were

certainly worth the investment. Beside

improved workflow and productivity, the

CHD gives us advanced programming, so we

can deliver improved tooth geometries to the

customer. Furthermore, the enclosed unit

made a significant difference to the

workshop environment that was previously

filled with coolant mist. This has benefitted

the visual impact of the workshop and offers

a cleaner working environment.

An additional two CHP machines were

removed in 2006 for the arrival of a Vollmer

CX100. Purchased specifically for sharpening

small TCT saws to maximum diameter of

500mm in small batches, the CX100 offers

rapid turnaround times with fast set-ups.

This enables Thames Valley Saw Service to

service up to 400 TCT blades each week for

customers with low frequency, one-off

orders.

The company's reward for providing saw

blades of impeccable quality, has been an

exceptional level of growth over the last 10

years. As well as employing Vollmer grinding

centres, Thames Valley Saw Service has

invested in alternate machine tools with

particular technical attributes over the last

decade. As Mr Muttram continues: "Despite

the exceptional quality, service and longevity

of the Vollmer machines, we have on

occasions acquired machines from alternate

suppliers. In hindsight, this has proven a

mistake. Some of our machines were

acquired over Vollmer on price, but you get

what you pay for, and the quality and

reliability of lesser machines had an impact

on our business. As we were going through a

period of growth, a machine we believed

would be an integral part of our business

became extremely unreliable and this was

compounded by poor service support."

The result was Thames Valley Saw

Services acquisition of a Vollmer CHD270

with a three station ND230 robotic loading

system in 2007 to replace a competitor

machine. As Mr Muttram recalls: "We had

the previous machine for nine years and in

that period, it proved expensive to repair,

unreliable, unproductive and time

consuming to set-up. It would only hold

certain saw blade bore sizes, which resulted

in additional setting times or the transfer of

blades to other machines. With regards to

productivity, the automatic loader could only

hold 20 saw blades, so we could only

machine 20 blades unmanned overnight."

From the offset, the Vollmer CHD270

eliminated all these issues. The machine

could cope easily with any bore size. The

reliability has been exceptional and the

ND230 robotic loader has a capacity for up to

100 blades, resulting in overnight

productivity increasing five-fold. "The

technology behind the CHD270 is

outstanding. It has two touch probes for

automatic measurement of each tooth. The

probes measure the diameter, kerf and the

face of the blades. By measuring the face and

gullet, the probe tells the machine how far

the wheel has to go into each gullet. This

removes any possibility of grinding thin air

beyond the carbide tip, which results in

improved cycle times."

"With automatic wheel compensation that

continually measures the grinding wheels,

our consistency and quality has improved.

Furthermore, the Vollmer is a more rigid

machine with a heavier base and this has

improved the surface finishes of our blades.

From a productivity standpoint, the Vollmer

is at least 20% faster than our previous

grinding centre. On average, we are

machining a 300mm diameter TCT blade

with 96 teeth in 17 minutes. Despite the

machine being capable of machining at

higher speeds, this consumes more grinding

wheels, more power and puts unnecessary

stress on the machine. The high level of

automation with the CHD270 enables an

operator to spend an hour each evening

loading and programming the machine and

then starting the next shift with a robotic

loader with 80 to 100 completed TCT blades.

With this remarkable automation, there is

little need to push the cycle times to shave

seconds of a blade. This method also ensures

our blades are finished to a remarkably high

standard. I would like to add that it’s not

only the investment in machinery over the

years that has aided our growth but also the

loyal, dedicated and highly skilled workforce

here at Thames Valley Saw Service,”

concludes Mr Muttram.

The revolutionary CoJet 2612

industrial inkjet printer made its UK

exhibition debut on the RW Machines

stand at last year’s W12. Enabling high

definition flatbed printing of

anything from woodgrains to colour

photo images or complex graphic

artworks onto a wide range of flat 8 ft

x 4 ft panels. CoJet

will also print batches or random smaller

panel components - like cabinet doors, for

example. CoJet not only prints with inks

that are warranted UV stable for eight

years, it can even add texture to the printed

surface.

The generously proportioned table (2600

x 1200mm printable area) takes individual

workpieces up to 500 kilos in weight and

CoJet 2612 will also print several different

designs bi-directionally at a single pass and

with a print definition of 720dpi. A new

1440dpi ultra high speed printing option

was also launched at the last Atlanta

exhibition; for comparison, the images on

this page were printed at or below 300dpi

using a coarser screen.

The inkjet heads will return to overprint

an image up to eight times, building a

surface with real depth and covering

around 20sq metres per hour in normal

production mode. The resulting image of a

natural woodgrain like oak, or other deep-

pored timbers, is convincing to both eye

and touch. And in addition to wood-based

panels, CoJet will also print onto almost any

other material - metal, ceramics, glass,

foam boards, acrylics and even concrete.

A well engineered UV lamp system to

both sides of the print head means inks

cure almost immediately making CoJet a

seriously productive machine for any

manufacturer requiring just-in-time,

custom-designed décors. The table of the

machine will handle materials of up to

100mm in thickness and will even print

down into routered patterns, such as on

Specialist distributors and converters

of wood based panel products,

Decorpanel, was in need of reliable

machinery to cope with its continuing

rapid business growth. The company

required quality machinery capable of

high throughput rates for long

periods of time.

Based in Tyne and Wear, Decorpanel

operates an 80,000 sq. ft. facility

employing 55 people. The company

supplies wood based panels to blue chip

customers such as DFS, Egger, Marks and

Spencer, Premier Inn and New Look.

Ian Ling, managing director of

Decorpanel explains, “Originally we had

Italian machines in our factory, however,

they proved to be unreliable. Over time we

found they were causing us more problems

and it just wasn’t a good experience.

“Our business had grown rapidly and

was showing no signs of slowing down. It

became clear to us that in order to keep

pace with this growth we could no longer

rely on our old machines. We needed to

upgrade and make serious investments in

reliable, technically advanced equipment.”

Investing in a quality manufacturer

“John Shepherd, a HOMAG UK

representative, had been paying us visits for

a while. We had established a good working

relationship with him as he sold us one of

our press machines some time ago.

“In 1993, during discussions regarding

the possibility of investing in a new saw,

John was really helpful. He understood the

needs of our business and was extremely

knowledgeable about HOMAG equipment.

This meant, when it came to suggesting

machines that were right for our company,

he knew exactly which models were capable

of keeping up with our ever increasing

production demands.

“He recommended we looked at a new

saw from HOLZMA, a HOMAG Group

company. After seeing the saw in operation

we agreed that it was the right solution for

us and invested in the HOLZMA HPP

380/43/43. The installation process ran

smoothly and we were up and running in

no time at all. The HOLZMA immediately

impressed us with its speed, accuracy and

overall performance.”

Investing in the HOMAG Group“As our business continued to grow, we

recognised a need for more technically

advanced and reliable edgebanders.

Initially, we invested in second hand

machines however, it soon became clear

that they couldn’t handle our high levels of

productivity. To address the problem we

bought another low cost brand of

edgebander, but unfortunately this ended

INSTALLATION

up causing us nothing but problems too. At

this point we realised we needed to bite the

bullet and invest in a top quality brand and

so, once again, I called John Shepherd for

his advice.

“After careful consideration, we

purchased two BRANDT edgebanders from

HOMAG UK to handle our edging work.

These were incredibly reliable and they

produced a better quality of finish in less

time than our old machines. Investing in

the market leading brand gave us the

reassurance that regular breakdowns would

be a thing of the past.

The HOMAG Experience“Experiencing HOMAG’s aftersales

service and owning our first HOLZMA saw

made us realise how important it was to

partner with a reliable and trustworthy

company, one we could continue to invest

with into the future. We now have a total of

six different HOLZMA saws, each of which

has been carefully chosen in conjunction

with HOMAG UK, to carry out specific

functions in our production process.

“Recently, with our production demands

continuing to grow, we decided to upgrade

one of the BRANDT edgebanders to a more

technically advanced machine. HOMAG

UK were really helpful in working with us

to specify a new HOMAG edgebander

coupled to a LIGMATECH return system

all at an attractive price.

“Along with our HOLZMA saws and

BRANDT and HOMAG edgebanders we’ve

invested in a WEEKE CNC router. We’ve

had this machine for a long time now and it

really does prove how reliable HOMAG

Group equipment is. It has a high

throughput and despite the fact we work it

for long hours, it continues to produce top

quality results day in, day out.”

Excellent service from a trustworthy company

“With each machine we have purchased

from HOMAG, we have experienced a slick

installation process carried out with typical

German efficiency. As with any technical

installation, there is always the chance of

the odd hiccup, but on the rare occasion

such issues have occurred, HOMAG has

always handled these promptly and

professionally.

“The level of after sales service and

support we receive from HOMAG is exactly

what you’d expect from a global market

leader. Not surprisingly, with the number of

machines we have, a HOMAG engineer is

on site regularly whether it’s to carry out

twice yearly machine services or in

response to a call out. The good thing is, if

we ever have an issue with another

machine whilst they’re on site, they will

always take a look for us and fix it quickly,

keeping machine downtime to a minimum.

“We find HOMAG an extremely

professional company to deal with.

Consequently, if someone asks me for

advice on woodworking machinery, I’ll

almost certainly send them to HOMAG.

Although their machines aren’t the

cheapest on the market, at the end of the

day, you get what you pay for. They know

our business well and when it comes to the

technical specification of bed sizes, drilling

configurations and other such important

details, we trust them to give us honest,

accurate advice.

“At the rate we work our equipment we

need the extra quality and support that you

get from HOMAG. For us, it’s good

technologically advanced machinery at a

sensible price. We believe their machines

are the best out there and, of course, they

come with a comprehensive support

package. Overall it makes total sense for us

to continue down the HOMAG route and

we certainly plan to do so,” concludes Ling.

After postponing the purchase of a

Striebig vertical panel saw due to the

recession, a Gloucestershire joinery is

now talking full advantage of its

benefits.

The Compact 4164 bought by R.A. White &

Sons of Stonehouse replaced a second-hand

vertical panel saw acquired several years ago.

The family-run kitchen and bespoke joinery

manufacturer was established in 1971 by Bob

White. He runs the company with the help of

his sons, Chris and Mark, both joiners.

Over a 40 year period White’s has built up

an enviable reputation for making high-quality

work – ranging from kitchens to shop fittings

– for domestic and commercial clients.

“I was going to replace the old saw about

four years ago,” said Bob White. “I knew of

Striebig’s reputation from what I had read in

the trade press and heard from colleagues in

the business, so I gave them a call.”

Striebig’s exclusive UK agent, T.M.

Machinery Sales, then sent someone along to

talk to Mr White.

“After learning exactly what we needed to

do with the saw, the type and size of sheets

we cut and our budget, he suggested the

most appropriate model and size of

machine for our needs.”

After being all set to buy the Compact

model that had been recommended, the

recession hit and the purchase was put on

hold.

“Now that business is much better I

thought the time was now right to go ahead,

so I phoned T.M. to place the order. I was

pleasantly surprised to find that they had all

my details on file from their visit over four

years ago.”

Their Compact 4164 cuts mainly standard

size plywood, MFC and MDF panels, as well

as kitchen worktops, up to 30mm thick.

“It’s a brilliant saw which is spot on when it

comes to cutting completely square every

time,” said Mr White. “It’s well built with a

nicely balanced saw head that can be changed

from horizontal to vertical in seconds, and its

built-in extraction means there is now far less

dust in the air.”

His son Chris is also a big fan. “We do an

incredible amount of work on the Striebig,

sizing panels for everything from kitchen to

shop fittings, as well as sawing worktops we

produce for builders.

“I particularly like the way the saw blade

does not cut into the machine’s backing

panels, and the totally accurate cut we get

every time.”

Everyone at R.A. White has been impressed

with the friendliness and high level of

professionalism shown by T.M. Machinery’s

staff.

Said Bob White: “Right from my first

telephone enquiry up to when the engineer

installed the machine and carried out the

training, nothing has been too much for them.

They are great people to deal with.”

Striebig’s Compact 4164 is one of nine

models in the Compact series with a cutting

range from 3100 x 1644mm up to 5350 x

2200mm. They are all based on a single, fully

welded sawing frame to give decades of

reliable service whilst maintaining cutting

precision.

The saws can be wall-mounted or

freestanding. They can cut practically all wood-

based sheet materials as well as timber, plaster

board, plastics, composites and aluminium

panels. They guarantee impressive dust limit

values well below 1mg/m3.

SAWS

The Sigma Prima Automatic Panel Beam

Saw is the perfect solution for small

and medium-size companies requiring

the cutting and breakdown of all types

of panels including chipboard, MDF,

MFC, plywood, etc., with a perfect cut

finish.

Blade projection on the Prima 50 and 67

is 50 and 67mm respectively, with a 3300,

3800 and 4300mm rip cutting capacity and

a choice of 2100, 3200, 3800 and 4300mm

cutting depths. A variable saw carriage

speed of 6 to 30metres/min., and

24metres/min. for the rear pusher and

clamps.

Long-life high performance and quality is

due to the use of THK guides instead of

round bars for the raising and lowering of

the saw carriage and the base derived from

the top of the range models. Strong “H”

shaped beams and rack and pinion for the

rear pusher movement with very high

positioning precision due to the reading

system utilising a magnetic band.

The automatic side aligner, included as

standard, slides on THK guides ensuring

maximum precision when cross cutting

panels, therefore reducing cutting times.

The saw carriage, driven by rack and

pinion, ensures top finishing quality and

long-life performance, which are typical

features of much larger industrial

machines.

Waste reduction is ensured by special

openings in the pressure beam, which

eliminates all interferences with the panel

grippers and ensures that the entire panel

is utilised. Two rack and pinion systems

connected by a torsion bar ensure that the

vertical pressure beam movements are

perfectly aligned.

The beam saw is controlled by the latest

PC/PLC control system, with several

Software options available, such as Wincut

(PC/PLC operator's interface) and graphic

Spending a little more on a quality product with a long product guaranteeand life expectancy is often more cost effective in the long term

It’s a fact that quality always sells and

that the best form of recommendation

is word of mouth. Without the first

you don’t get the latter. Put the two

together and you have an unbeatable

combination that spells successful

business, writes David Newton of Brio

UK, one of the leading bi-folding door

hardware manufacturers

Bi-folding doors are the must-have

design feature in both domestic and

commercial settings where the craze to let

the outside in and the inside out is rapidly

gaining momentum. The inhabitants of the

British Isles, with our uncertain weather,

have embraced the idea with enthusiasm

seeing it as a way of enjoying the benefits of

outdoor living with the added bonus of

being able to easily close out the cold and

rain behind secure doors while still

enjoying panoramic views.

However, the market is fast expanding

beyond the domestic setting into the

commercial sector where hotels,

restaurants and cafes are also benefiting

form the current al fresco trend. For

manufacturers of doors and windows this

trend offers an opportunity to cash in on

the trend with high spec, high end products

to satisfy current demand in this luxury

niche. In general sliding and folding

solutions are also becoming more popular,

as they offer flexible options to architects,

specifiers and end users on both internal

and external applications.

Windows and doors are a huge

investment and a purchase that should last

a long time so it is really important to

ensure the best possible quality hardware is

sourced, offering peace of mind that the

product will stand the test of time.

Manufacturers/fabricators should be very

wary of buying hardware solely on price as

in so many cases this is a false economy.

Spending a little more on a quality product

with a long product guarantee and life

expectancy is often more cost effective in

the long term.

When selecting hardware it is important

to consider the specification of the materials

used in its production. Often substandard

product contains a lot of plastic components

and these can have an adverse effect on the

life expectancy of the product, which can

lead to expensive remedial work in the

medium and long term.

Another important consideration when

specifying door and window hardware is

security. Doors and windows are the most

likely area of attack for any would-be

burglar, so it is therefore vital that good

security is offered when it comes to door

and window hardware. It’s important to

choose products that have been tested for

years of safe and consistent operation.

Product really does need to act the part and

not only look good.

It is also fundamental that the product is

easy to use right down the line from

manufacturer/fabricator to the installer and

ultimately the end user. Any quality

hardware manufacturer will have

considered the chain of use when designing

their products.

The best form of marketing is word of

mouth and recommendation. Using good

quality components and therefore

producing a high standard end product will

without doubt lead to more work.

David J Haddock has been a cabinet maker

for over 30 years, working on everything

from small jewellery boxes to the

recently completed library at Wadham

College, University of Oxford. He has

never advertised, building his success on

word of mouth recommendations.

David recently invested in a Brilliant-2 1350

REd-L sander which, he says, is “worth its

weight in gold”.

His existing Taiwanese sander was good,

but could only cope with solid timber. With

projects on the horizon including the

Wadham College library and a marquetry

dressing room, David investigated the market

for a quality sander that could cope with large

quantities of panels.

Seeking personal recommendations from

his local contacts, David shortlisted two

sanders: Kündig, and a German competitor.

First, he visited Switzerland to see the Kündig

factory and very much liked what he saw: this

was followed by a visit to Germany, shortly

after which he committed to the German

machine, the deciding factors being the

large number of extras it offered and a better

financial package.

Following the delivery of the German

machine, David identified three key problems.

David reports that it was too complex for the

workshop, could not cope with small timber

components and, in David’s words, “did not

do the job it was meant to.”

He comments: “It was

over engineered. It would

have been fantastic if we

had just been doing

panels, but our work is

incredibly diverse,

including both small

timber components and

large panels.”

With the marquetry

dressing room and then

the University library

coming up fast, David

urgently contacted Carl

O’Meara of Kündig UK to

see what was available.

Time was short, so

David took what was in stock, a machine with

the option of lacquer finishing. David says: “It

was more money, but it has proved it is worth

its weight in gold. I never would have believed

a sander could sand lacquered panels so well!”

David is delighted with the finish achieved

with the Kündig Brilliant-2 sander which, he

says, is spot on. He continues: “It is so easy to

use, any of my lads can use it without really

thinking about it.” He has found that the

sander has significantly speeded up

production in the workshop.

The Brilliant-2 1350 REd-L sander has a first

contact roller for accurate calibration of the

material and a second head, which is an

electronic segmental sanding pad, which can

be used for sanding veneer and, on the

“-L” series, also lacquer.

It also has a vacuum bed, belt blowers for

cleaning the abrasive and variable speed to the

abrasive, which is electronic inverter

controlled, the segments in the pad are 22

mm. The “1350” in the machine’s title refers

to the width of the sanding belt, 1,350 mm.

Although the machine has only been in

place for a few months, it has already proved

its worth, having been used in the University

library project, not one but two marquetry

dressing rooms, and special projects such as

the new inlaid BA logo for Gatwick Airport

which took advantage of the ability of the

Brilliant to sand lacquered panels.

With lacquer sanding, the amount removed

can be as little as 0.01 mm. The precision of

the Kündig Brilliant range allows a result to be

achieved at a depth often invisible to the

unaided human eye.

When asked if he would recommend the

sander, David’s response was: “100%, yes. In

fact, I have recommended it to a colleague also

looking around at machines, who took

delivery of a Kündig sander on Monday. He is

a local chap who I work with, and on my

recommendation has gone with the Kündig.”

Dust Control Systems recently

commissioned a new dust extraction

plant which required its engineers to

devise an unusual, yet cost-effective

scheme to best fulfil its customers’

needs.

Integral Surface Designs Ltd, based in

Skelmersdale, Lancashire, is a newly-

established company specialising in the

manufacture of acrylic, vinyl-wrapped, and

MFC pvc-edged doors. Over £750,000 has

been invested in the new venture which is led

by Deralam Laminates Ltd, a nationwide

distributor of High Pressure Laminates,

Kitchen Worktops and Melamine-Faced

Products. Investment included the complete

refurbishment and fit-out of a 12,000 sq. ft.

workshop facility, along with the acquisition

of an impressive array of advanced CNC-

technology nesting machines. The

machinery was purchased with the aid of

funding under the Government’s Regional

Growth Fund (RGF) and financed through

NatWest and Lombard.

Heading up the new operation is Jeff

Green, who has 27 years experience in the

woodworking industry, and considerable

production management expertise in the

manufacture of vinyl doors and wrapped

mouldings. The management team also

includes Clare Hartley-Montrone and Diane

Williams; both of whom operate at director

level, with responsibility for sales of Integral’s

extensive range of doors, panels and

mouldings.

After finding suitable premises, Jeff Green

project-managed the refurbishment and

sourced the necessary machines and

equipment required to design and engineer a

range of high quality doors. Jeff was also

determined from the outset that the facility

should incorporate a Waste-to-Energy system

– utilising woodwaste generated during

production as a fuel to provide heat for the

workshops.

“I had no hesitation in contacting both

Dust Control Systems and Ranheat

Engineering to put forward proposals for

dealing with our MDF waste”, says Jeff

Green. “I had experience of working with

both these companies in the past and they

had always performed well.” Working in

close co-operation with Ranheat Engineering,

DCS engineers devised a filter system that

could directly feed the silo of the new 300kW

heating system, without the need for costly

transfer fans and conveying systems. Melvyn

Bathgate, sales director at DCS explains: “We

designed the system whereby the filter unit

could be mounted on a hopper section and

directly coupled to the 4 metre diameter silo

roof. In this way, extracted wood dust and

chips could be gravity fed straight into the

hopper. It meant that the whole system

would only require just one main fan,

resulting in considerable cost savings for

Integral Surface Designs.”

The completed structure, at almost 11

metres high, incorporates a high-efficiency

modular filter which is fitted with tubular

‘Superbag’ polyester filter media, and is

designed to handle an airflow capacity of

23,000m3/hr. The system provides extraction

to a total of nine machines and has enough

capacity to accommodate additional

machines in the future.

In addition to the installation of ducting

runs throughout the facility, DCS also

supplied and installed a waste wood

Shredder and a Dry Back Spray Booth. The

robust Schuko shredder is capable of

handling MDF, chipboard and hardwood

offcuts at a rate of 22-300kg/hr, and the 4.4m

wide galvanised spray booth incorporates two

axial flow fans and disposable double-layer

paper-type filter media.

A new manufacturing business has

prepared for the cold winter months,

with two new wood waste heaters from

Wood Waste Technology.

Manzana Contracts was set up in April

2012, to provide specialist manufacturing

services for the leisure, commercial and elite

domestic market, from its 20,000 square foot

workshop in Huddersfield.

Being environmentally conscious, business

owners Chris and Gill Heleine spent time

researching eco-friendly ways to dispose of

their wood off-cuts, liking the idea of

converting wood waste into free energy rather

than it going to landfill. Having calculated

that it was going to cost around £26,000 for

the existing gas heaters to warm the

workshop for the 12 employees every winter,

investing in wood waste heaters no longer

just made good environmental sense, but

good business sense too – and they started

stock-piling their wood waste over the

summer in anticipation.

Wood Waste Technology was

recommended to them by a supplier. Gill

says: “Whilst we appreciated the quality and

durability of the heaters, and were pleased

they were manufactured by the company in

the UK, we also liked Wood Waste

Technology’s company values, as they seemed

to match our own. Just like us, Kurt Cockroft

and Mick Evans believe in good old fashioned

quality and service, with a modern approach.”

The WT15 heaters were installed by Wood

Waste Technology’s specialist team and

everyone at Manzana Contracts is thrilled

with the outcome. As Gill says: “We’re

delighted with both the heaters and the

service we’ve received from Wood Waste

Technology – they’ve delivered everything

they promised. Chris and I are especially

affected by the cold as we only moved back to

the UK from Minorca last year – but it’s nice

to see the guys in their short sleeves, rather

than them having to wear their thermals in

the workshop!”

MD of Wood Waste Technology, Kurt

Cockroft says: “Gill and Chris are benefiting

from taking an organised approach to their

business. By doing the business calculations

in advance, they’ve been able to save a

substantial amount of money on skip bills

and heating costs, and they’ll get a good

return from their investment.”

Wood Waste Technology offers a full range

of wood waste heaters, from small hand fired

units to larger fully automatic systems, and

offers site survey and design, as well as

manufacture, installation and on-going

maintenance. The company also services all

types of wood waste heaters and supplies

genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other

suppliers.

In addition, partner organisation Gross UK

supplies a wide range of economical and

heavy duty dependable German shredders

and briquetters, which come in various sizes

and specifications to enable businesses to buy

a machine suitable to requirements.

Used as part of a timber frame system

or within traditional masonry

construction, suspended timber floors

remain the preferred option for first

storey and above amongst most volume

housebuilders.

The most commonly used decking

material for these floors is a system of

tongue-and-groove particleboard panels of

which Norbord’s Caberdek is one of the

UK’s leading brands.

Made from moisture-resistant P5 grade

particleboard, Caberdek has a tough non-

slip plastic coating on its upper surface to

protect the board from damage or dirt

resulting from following trades, such as

plastering.

The protective film is also capable of

protecting boards which are exposed to the

elements up to 42 days following

installation. Once the building is finished,

the film is simply peeled off to reveal a

pristine surface ready for carpeting or other

floor finishes.

Caberdek comprises easy-to-handle

2400mm x 600mm panels produced in

thicknesses of 18mm and 22 mm. Suitable

for fixing to traditional sawn timber or

engineered-timber joists, including metal-

web joists, Caberdek can be

fixed with nails, screws or, for

the best results, with Norbord’s

own specially-formulated

adhesives.

Many leading housebuilders

now routinely employ the

Caberfix Pro Kit, a powerful

sealing and fixing system for

installing Caberdek flooring.

This system consists of

Caberfix T&G adhesive,

Caberfix Joint&Joist adhesive

and Caberfix Tape.

Caberfix T&G is specially

formulated to produce strong

bonds between adjacent panels

along the tongue-and-groove joint. Caberfix

Joint&Joist is a high-strength polymer

adhesive which remains flexible after

curing and is designed to fix a Caberdek

floor to the supporting joists.

Replacing mechanical fixings, Caberfix

Joint&Joist speeds up installation and

produces a floor which is guaranteed free of

squeaks and creaks. Its flexibility also

contributes to noise attenuation, thus

aiding in the floor’s conformity with Part E

of the Building Regulations governing the

passage of noise.

Caberfix Tape seals the joints to prevent

moisture degrading the T&G adhesives. For

floors which are likely to be exposed to the

elements during freezing conditions,

Norbord’s special Xtreme tape is

recommended.

BOARDS & PANELS

Ever the pace-setter in surface

materials, IDS is now offering a

dedicated range of Compact Density

Fibreboard (CDF) from Kronoswiss. The

material opens up new market

opportunities for furniture

applications. It combines first class

performanc e at a more competitive price

point and is an ideal product for heavy

duty furniture, laboratories and

prisons.

CDF is the next generation of traditional

MDF where, during the manufacturing

process, the fibres are mixed with resins

and compressed to a far higher level,

producing a much denser board. IDS offers

CDF in both melamine or pre-laminated

finishes in a choice of 15 decors in plain

colours and woodgrains ex-stock for

delivery in 48 hours. Customers can also

access the full choice of 300 decors with a

minimum order quantity of just 10 panels

opening up unprecedented design flexibility

for furniture manufacturers in a wide range

of projects. The panels are available in a

sheet size of 2800 x 2070mm.

Andy Ransom, Purchasing Manager for

Panel Products at IDS says:

“CDF is genuine innovation from a

manufacturer who is smartly reading the

market trends for cost engineering and

using manufacturing expertise to push out

the product boundaries. Manufacturing the

finished product in a single process drives

cost down, while also guaranteeing a high

performance panel that’s entirely fit for

purpose. The industry hasn’t seen this type

of innovation in years and IDS is delighted

to be bringing benefits and opportunities to

customers in this way.”

The new CDF range is available from all

12 of IDS’s branches nationwide.

The For(u)m has made new Kronospan

decors a virtual reality after stylists,

designers, manufacturers and

distributors were brought together to

shape future surface trends.

Held annually in November and hosted by

Kronospan at its Centre for Design

Excellence in North Wales, the For(u)m is a

design event aimed at inspiring the next

generation of surface decors.

This year the For(u)m used the digital

magic of an augmented reality to allow more

than 60 guests over two nights to explore

proposed decors across four trend concepts

– Iridescent, Undone, Purist and Forager.

By viewing what were at first empty

spaces using an iPad, the Forum audience

discovered virtual rooms where they could

change surface designs on a whim. With

physical samples of each decor also

available to touch and feel, the guests were

then asked to vote for their preferred

surfaces using the tablet.

Paul Duddle, product development and

marketing manager for Kronospan, says:

“It’s our third For(u)m event and arguably

our most successful. We’ve had great

feedback from guests about the use of virtual

reality. It really seemed to help guests

interact, explore, mix and choose the

different decors in the context of a room

environment.

“The data collected from our industry

guests through the iPad software will give us

a vital insight into how the market will

receive these decor trends. There ‘on-the-

ground’ expertise will help decide what new

decors will feature in Kronospan’s FRESH

range, which will give our collection an

important commercial edge.”

Head of design at Impress, Daniele Merla,

also addressed the For(u)m audience about

sources of inspiration for the development of

future trend concepts and especially

emotional responses.

Daniele said: “We're not here to tell you

what the next trends are. We're here to share

experience, knowledge and ideas. We want

to inspire our customers and inspire the

market. Products should have an emotional

effect and we need to discover the

customer’s emotions before we get to any

concepts. So, we don't talk about what you

do in a kitchen, it's about how you want to

feel in the kitchen.”

The leading decor designer also drew on

the concept of time as an indicator of

customer needs and aspirations. Where are

people in their lives and experience? Time

should drive design and Daniele went on to

highlighting two key markets to consider in

2013/14, children growing up and the

mature over 60s.

The climax to Kronospan’s design team's

collective expertise, months of tireless

research, thousands of air miles and the

outcome of For(u)m will be seen in

Kronospan's update of its FRESH collection

of surface decors in the spring.

Nothing stands still at Decorative

Panels – hot on the heels of the massive

investments the group has made in

opening a state of the art new

manufacturing facility for Decorative

Panels Components comes the latest and

most innovative set of marketing and

sales literature the company has ever

produced.

With so much to offer throughout the

group it was decided that separate

brochures should be produced for each

company as well as a technical brochure on

the company’s hollowcore product, dp-lite,

and two extremely comprehensive and wide

ranging swatch guides.

The swatch guides are presented under

the brands dp-decor and dp-specialist. The

decor range comprises the latest paper foil

woodgrain, unicolour and fantasy designs

that when coupled with the enormous

range of substrates available becomes an

offer unrivalled in the industry.

The dp-specialist swatch includes

probably the largest stock gloss offer

available in the market. Included in the

200+ designs are high gloss Acrylic

Senoplast products, a huge selection from

LG of high gloss PVC unicolour,

woodgrain, and fantasy designs, high gloss

PP unicolour and PET woodgrains, a range

of PET high scratch resistant gloss papers,

matt paint effect PVC designs and over 100

Kaindl laminates.

To enable easy storage and retrieval the

full brochure set is presented as a boxed set

with individual brochures available for

specific market segments.

Brochures are available to request now by

calling 01484 658341or visiting

packs the new Decorative Panels website

sets a benchmark of simplicity of

navigation that allows the user access to all

aspects of the Group activity as well as a

multitude of downloads and video

presentations of the Group facilities

One of the most innovative features

available to designers who use the site will

be the dp-lightbox tool. This feature enables

users to select decors from the dp-decor

and dp-specialist swatches and effectively

build a pallet of product to access

compatibility in a mix and match

environment.

The process of sample ordering has been

radically simplified, in fact the system is

now called “...as easy as 1 2 3.” This system,

available through the web or by telephone,

sees any decors selected from the swatch

guides followed up with A4 samples of the

actual material that will be despatched

within 24 hours of the initial request. After

the customer has received these

presentation samples, and is ready to make

prototypes, full sized laminated sheet

material can be ordered through the same

sample hotline number shown in the

swatch guides and on the web. From the

first browse of the swatch to the receipt of

sheet material can take as little as 1 week.
