CAPPADOCIAGöreme is a town in Cappadocia,ahistorical regionof Turkeywhichis a spectacular example of theeffects of erosion of the volcanictuff sedimentsbywindandwater.Typicalfeaturesarepillars,columns,towers, obelisks and needlesthat reach heights of 40m. Themajor remnant of erosion, Akdağ(1,325m), is the dominant featurein the valley. The nearby Erciyasvolcanoisstillactivewithoccasionalminoreruptions.Withintheserockformations people have excavateda network of caves which servedasrefuges,residences,storageandplaces of worship dating from the4thcentury.

In the ruin-like landscape of theCappadociaPlateauwherenaturalerosion has sculpted the tuff intoshapeswhichareeerilyreminiscentof towers, spires, domes andpyramids, man has added to theworkmanship of the elements bydiggingcells,churchesandveritablesubterraneancitieswhichtogethermakeuponeoftheworld’slargestcave dwelling complexes! Thisphenomenal site excels especiallyfor the beauty of the decor ofthe Christian sanctuaries whosefeatures make Cappadocia oneof the leading examples of post-iconoclastByzantineart.

day 11 | Myra – Finike – KalkanDepartinthemorningforMyra.VisitthehomechurchofSt.Nicholas(SantaClaus)where the floor of the church is madeof opus sectile, a mosaic of colouredmarble,and therearesomeremainsoffrescoes on the walls. Because of theplague that swept through Anatolia(Myralostone-thirdofitspopulationtoit in 542-3 AD), Muslim raids, floodingandearthquakes,Myrawasabandonedby the 11th century. What remains isvery impressive - a large theatre withthe backdrop of Myra’s famous rock-cut tombs. The sight of these is quitestriking.DinnerandovernightinKalkan.
