Dear Editor I would be grateful if any of your readers could tell me what is the correct way to dispose of out-of-date or otherwise unwanted medicines.

In the UK I take, as instructed, such items to the pharmacist who disposes of them free of charge. My pharmacist here tells me that pharmacists do not offer this service. In the UK there is concern even about the amount of paracetamol which is now being found in the soil and we are asked not to flush it down the toilet.

If there is no 'correct' way, perhaps someone could suggest the safest way. I am sure this must be a common problem and that many people wish to act responsibly.
