Information Literacy
• 48% of students who have completed 45 units at Palomar College are proficient in information literacy.
• Over 50% of all students assessed scored either proficient or exemplary on each of the first four competencies (define, access, evaluate and use information).
• Less than half (42.5%) of the students assessed at proficiency on using information ethically (citing sources).

• 56% of those students earned an overall score of proficient or exemplary.
• Older students performed better than younger students
• Students scores improved with number of units completed up to 30 units. Then there was a slight decline.

• No difference in performance by gender• White, Non-Hispanic student group performed
better on average than Hispanic student group• Youngest students 18-19 did not perform as
well on average as older students

Quantitative Literacy
• Created workgroup to develop quantitative literacy resources for students and faculty.
• Group met in June and discussed some of the challenges facing students and faculty.
• John Harland presented an extensive list of resources that faculty could use in their classes.
• John is working with some of the faculty members to develop some tailored resources for their courses.

• 81.2% Competent / More than Competent• Results varied by subgroup• Women received more “Superior” ratings• 30+ students received more “Superior” ratings• White, Non Hispanic and multi-ethnic tended to
receive higher ratings• Students with more units had slightly higher ratings• Strengths -Context and purpose, critical thinking,
overall structure• Weaknesses - Grammar and punctuation

Ideas for Action:• Need to form a workgroup to develop ideas below• Every class should have a writing assignment• Encourage revisions• Sentence level problems - gather resources – web sites• Remind faculty to send students to writing center• Workshops on specific areas - weaknesses• Faculty forum – discussing areas of concern• Offer PD Workshops for faculty -- how to improve
writing in your classroom & writing a rubric

Intercultural Competency
• Assessments varied across the six factors.• 53.7%-60.5% of students rated “Proficient” /
“Exemplary”• Results varied across demographic categories • Gender – Overall women rated higher on “Empathy”• Age - 30+ students received proportionately more
“Exemplary” ratings• Units – All over the board, small trend for students
with higher units. Again use caution when interpreting results.

Intercultural Competency
Ideas for Action:• Rubric was difficult to use. Consider using e-portfolios in
the future.• Norming needs further refinement.• Expand a cultural awareness to an institutional awareness
– faculty, staff, administrators• PD training for faculty and staff, to model and teach
intercultural competence.• Investigate a resource center for undocumented students.• Align and promote the courses that meet the multi-
cultural requirement
