stalling them oneself is prohibited by the landlord. Still, there are a variety of easy and cost-effective ways to organize a small space.

“The principles are the same in organizing re-gardless of the size of your space,” said Christine Palen, an organizing consultant and coach since 1991 and instructor of “Chaos Control — Simpli-fy Your Life” at Palo Alto Adult School. Having a small space gives you an advantage, she said, because you have less room for clutter.

Palen recommends taking stock of your be-longings and paring down what you have. Asking yourself “What do I need?” can be difficult, so a better question to use is: “Does this need me?”

“I give this perspective because I traveled around the world for 12 months with a carry-on suitcase and that was all I needed,” she said.

Going through your stuff and sorting it out once every year is a good idea, said Sandra Devol, a professional organizer based in Mountain View. “Some things I like to say when helping a client are: Why do you want this? What does it have, what memories?” If you don’t need something but are having trouble letting it go, maybe leave it aside and check back in another six months, she suggested. “If you haven’t used it, I’d encourage them to let it go.”

Donating something to an in-need nonprofit can make the process easier. Books can go to the library and clothing can go to a woman’s shelter rather than Goodwill, she said.

If you need to store things away such as books and CDs that you’re no longer using, keep them in a big see-through plastic tub, she said. “Moisture won’t get to them and you can see through the plastic. “Remember to put a label on the side to keep track of what you have,” she added.

When buying furniture, don’t limit yourself to the space you have now, Palen said. “Think about how you can use it in future apartments and homes,” she said. “If it’s a piece you want in your life and it fits through the door and it makes sense, it works,” she added.

Palen has kept a gigantic desk for 10 years — an item that wouldn’t normally make sense in a small space. “I make it work because I want it,” she said.

But you need to stay realistic, said Rosalie Ban-ta, a professional organizer based in Mountain View. “Know the shape of the room and the mea-surements. The shape and space can offer some constraints,” she said. If you don’t have room for a long sofa, use a couple of big chairs, she said.

Modular furniture is a good idea too because you can rearrange it in different ways. “I bought a solid-oak modular shelving unit that fits in differ-ent shapes, allowing me to build up or laterally,” she said.

When deciding on furniture, pick pieces with dual purpose, Palen said. A coffee table with a two-shelf system leaves room for magazines and remote controls. A file cabinet can double as an end table, a couch can convert into a bed for guests and an ottoman with storage saves space. “Ask yourself: How much duty can this piece do for me? You need to look critically at furniture,” Banta said. When organizing a room, “Try to be very vertical,” she said. For example, a TV stand with built-in storage makes the most of its “foot-print” in the room.

Another way to make storage easier is by stor-ing “like with like,” said Palen. Or, even nesting — storing things within things. “You can stack pots and pans together. You don’t have to keep the pot and lid together,” Banta said.

“Keep functions together,” said Devol. “If you have furniture, you have to visualize how you will set it up. It’s instinct and common sense for me

when I do it,” she said. Set things up so there’s an easy, natural traffic flow in the room, said Banta. But keep “like with like,” Devol said. If you want to read in a corner, try keeping a magazine rack or end table nearby to support that function, she said.

Another principle in organizing is doing things differently, Palen said. “I have clients rethink how something is used. You buy a utensil organizer for the kitchen and place it vertically in the drawer, but maybe horizontally items are easier to ac-cess,” she said. For a freezer without a second shelf, Palen used a shelf from a closet to create more space.

Thinking differently applies to all rooms: In the bedroom closet, folding rather than hanging shirts might make more sense. “Do things best for that space. Not everything will be ideal or be the way it was,” Palen said.

But above all, it’s important to make a space your own, even if you’re living there only a short while, said Palen. “Bring your own style,” she said, adding that if your apartment has an ugly carpet, invest in a nice rug. A bamboo rug is easy to find and evokes the sense of a hardwood floor.

Sources for low-cost decorations abound in more places than you think, Banta said. “People can use old pictures or just go to a garage sale or flea market and find things that appeal to them,” she said. And what you hang on the wall doesn’t have to be painting, she added. “It could just be something you hang on the wall.”

Hanging new things on the wall is an idea apart-ment mover Amy Blasberg is exploring. “I don’t plan on spending money on new art. I just plan on framing things,” she said.

“I’ve been teaching preschool for the past cou-ple of years and I’m hoping to put some of the kids’ work up.” ■Editorial Intern Lila Razzaqui can be reached at [email protected].
