A WELCOMING COMMUNITY, SAFE STREETS AND ‘SMALL-TOWN ENVIRONMENT’

Duveneck / St. Francisby Martin Sanchez

Barbara Wolfe and her husband Elliott wanted to settle down after moving around the country for many years, and

after one visit to Palo Alto in 1970, she remem-bers thinking, “This is it. ... This is home.”

Forty years, three re-models and many mem-ories later, they still live in their home on Madi-son Avenue.

Margot Lockwood-Stein and her husband

Tom Stein came to Duveneck in 2007 in search of a neighborhood where their children Ben and Katherine could safely play outside. They were attracted to the canopy of trees that surrounded their eventual home on Walter Hays Drive and appreciate how the neighborhood gives their children access to “great schools all the way ’til

high school,” Lockwood-Stein said.“We had bid on a similar (house) a year be-

fore, so I knew Margot would love it,” Stein said.

These two families’ experiences provide in-sight into daily life in Duveneck and the shared experiences that bring its residents together.

Socializing on Duveneck’s streets and side-walks is very important to both families. The

houses in the Steins’ corner of the neighborhood are “really attractive” and well-kept, Lockwood-Stein said, and minimal traffic makes their street a safe, active so-cial hub.

“We’ll take a walk around the loop and the kids will all be playing, and we’ll be hanging out with the grown-ups,” Lockwood-Stein said.

The Steins also enjoy wan-dering slightly further afield. Their children spend a lot of time at Eleanor Pardee Park, and Stein, an avid ten-nis player, appreciates Du-veneck’s proximity to the courts at Rinconada Park.

Wolfe described “Eleanor” Park as an especial “delight.” Palo Alto’s abundance of child-friendly facilities — including the Children’s Library and the Junior Mu-seum & Zoo, both of which are within walking distance from Duveneck — impressed her during her first visit to the city, she said.

However, frequent traf-fic on her street discourages many of her neighbors from walking around the neigh-borhood and socializing, she said. Turning nearby Edge-wood Plaza shopping cen-

ter into a “community hub” would help solve this prob-lem, she said.

For now, she walks her dog daily and enjoys meeting people who are out with their own pets. She and her friends also take weekly walks to University Avenue and Town & Country shopping center —Duveneck’s closest com-mercial districts.

The Steins wanted to move to Palo Alto because of its excellent school system, Lockwood-Stein said. She and her husband are thankful that five of their neighbors

have children in the same grade at Duveneck Elemen-tary as their son.

“Both of us grew up in the same group of kids through high school, and we knew how beneficial that could be,” he said.

Wolfe’s memories of Green Gables, as Duveneck Elementary was called until 1982, are more colorful.

“In the ’70s, everything was, you know, hanging loose,” she said.

Wolfe’s daughter Laura, who started attending Green Gables as a first grader, said

that she and her classmates were seated in a circle by their teacher — “with all the heads pressed together” — and taught the principles of group meditation.

She also recalled a teacher who lived in the neighbor-hood and often sat outside in his car — a large convertible with a steer’s horns mounted on the hood — to greet pass-ing students.

“It was nice to go over there and say hi,” she said.

Laura Wolfe moved back to Duveneck with her husband Daniel Cher in 1998 after leaving for college years be-

fore. The couple bid on many Palo Alto houses but ended up on Iris Lane — a street about five blocks from Bar-bara Wolfe’s — where they now live with their daughters Emma and Clara.

“The school is better since I was here. ... There are teacher’s aides and more par-ent involvement,” she said.

Moving to Duveneck can be difficult. Lockwood-Stein said that Duveneck’s high real estate prices make liv-ing there “a very big finan-cial decision” and that their current house is significantly smaller than the San Mateo

house they lived in before-hand.

But “the neighborhood is so great, it was worth it,” Stein said.

Barbara Wolfe is just glad to have found a quiet neigh-borhood with “tight com-munity bonds (and) friendly neighbors,” she said.

“The beauty is we have created a small-town envi-ronment in the larger envi-ronment of the Peninsula,” she said.

I think it is time to cross a line. So far in my writing I have kept the

subject gardening. It is time to talk about archi-tecture.

The difference is scale, level of responsibility and money. Architecture determines the cities, parks and corridors we use every day. We all make the decisions where we live and how they look and work. This month’s tips will be on taking part in that.

1. Our cities have the best land, the best wa-ter and the best climates around. This is why people are attracted to them. They can always use improvement in the realm of landscape architecture. Choices are made by elected officials as to how these improvements are made. Participate in these decisions, learn what is going on and stay appraised.

2. Many homeowners are changing their landscapes to drought-tolerant, sustainable and productive use. Big lawns are perfect first steps in this conversion. Participate in encouraging park conversions and public ar-eas to these new types of use.

3. Money is a big reason why landscape architecture is low on the priority list of city improvements. Encourage city governments to develop volunteer programs, consolidate resources, utilize recycled materials and plan in longer-term incremental changes.

4. Encourage professionals to participate in design, construction and maintenance pro-grams.

5. Educate yourself in landscape architec-ture. The Internet is a great resource. Look into the American Society of Landscape

Architects, www.asla.org/. They can refer architects to talk to about changing on a big scale.

6. When you travel, notice the parks, streets, city centers and landscape architecture and take notes, photos and videos of what works for you. I found the Jardin de Plants in Paris an inspiration although there is way too much turf for our water situation to allow.

7. Encourage more plantscape and less hardscape in landscape architecture. What this means is less concrete and more plants, less paving and more flowers, less question-able sculpture and more plant sculpture.

8. Community gardens are becoming more popular as the slow food and eat lo-cally movements are developing. The quality of community gardens and their programs can always use improvement. It is no longer a hippie thing; it is to everyone’s benefit.

9. Redesign your own garden to comple-ment the whole. I don’t mean have every yard identical. Be creative, innovative, expansive in your ideas and at the same time be intel-ligent and subtle. Blend in plant choices that complement the neighbors while showing off your design talents.

10. Design your yard to be an example. Ev-erybody is watching everybody else. Good design gets copied and bad design ignored. If you have an idea for an innovative landscape use, try it. Who knows? It may make a better place for all of us to live.

The Palo Alto Weekly publishes obituaries about people who lived in, or played a prominent role in, the community.

Obituaries are written by staff writers, based on information provided by mortuaries and/or family members. Due to space limits and other reasons, we may not include all the information a family wishes. Some families choose to write their own memorial announcements, then purchase space to publish it.

The Palo Alto Weekly handles funeral announcements for a small fee based on length of text. Photos may also be included.
