LINDA ROARK USES SUCCULENTS, TURNING GARDENING INTO AN ART FORM

Creating a WREATH that lasts

by by Cristina Wong

When people think of art, they think of man-made mediums

— paintings, prints and sculp-tures — but Linda Roark’s art form is focused on water-retaining plants called succu-lents.

Much of Roark’s career was spent as a molecular-biology assistant, but after her chil-dren left for college in 2009 she began seriously developing her interest in succulents. Ul-timately, she started Artistic Succulents, a container garden business, out of her Los Altos home. Her business involves planting succulents in pots that can enhance a patio setting, a home garden or a front/back-yard.

She also volunteers at Gamble Garden, taking succulents that are grown there and arranging them in containers that are distributed around the public garden, or creating arrangements that are sold during the annual spring tour.

And Roark teaches classes, including how to make a succulent wreath on Saturday, Feb. 4. In this hands-on class, she will talk about size and color, as well how to maintain the wreaths once at home. All materials are pro-vided, and participants are asked to bring a small pair of tweezers.

Teaching at Gamble Garden is a way to support the horticultural foundation, she said, adding that she hopes more people will come to volunteer.

“I like to volunteer because it’s really nice to express your art, but at the same time you’re also helping your community,” Roark said.

“Succulents are ideal to make wreaths be-cause they do not require too much attention, and still can be nice, very textural and have a lot of colors,” she said. They also last a long time, staying tidy and “nice,” she added.

In the class, Roark will give step-by-step instructions on how to make the wreath, as well as show examples of previous succulent wreaths she has created.

“I hope people will appreciate it — you’re going to learn how to do it, and you’re going home with a wreath you can use at your own home, and it’ll be something that will last you for quite a long time,” she said.

The succulents Roark uses are “non-cactus” plants. When people think of succulents, they normally think of the prickly cactuses, but that isn’t the case here. These succulents are soft and smooth, and grow in flower-like shapes

on their own. Their colors are not the typi-cal green of a cactus. Rather, succulents have vibrant hues of yellow, pink, red and purple. Though they are slow growers, they thrive outdoors, and are easy to maintain.

“I’ve always loved colors and textures,” she said, adding that she likes those better than the actual flowers. “If you have color and tex-ture with your succulents, it will last you much longer than if you only had flowers. ... With flowers of course you have colors, but they’ll go away pretty soon.”

Succulents are ideal for Roark’s artistic cre-ations because they last a long time. A type of plant that is meant for the outdoors, they

prefer hot sun and dry soil. Though they are slow growers, the end result is satisfactory be-cause their colors and textures remain intact for months.

“They take a lot of neglect,” she said. “They don’t like to be over-watered, need lots of light, and not so much water. ... (They’re) very easy to grow.”

Much of Roark’s inspiration to create a gardening-container business came from her parents, who were farmers and gardeners in Brazil where she was born. They exposed her to the gardening skills that she has perfected ever since.

“I have taken classes at Foothill College but

most of what I know has come from teachings from my parents and my own experience in working with succulents,” Roark said.

She used to think of gardening as just a hobby, and never thought it could be some-thing more.

“I decided I really, really loved gardening and I wanted it to be something I could turn into a business. ... It’s nice to be able to do what you love, and also make money doing it,” she said.

She also got her artistic background from her parents, who are artists as well — her fa-ther a painter, and her mother, who practices Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arrang-ing.

“I think I got my artistic side from both of them,” Roark said. “Someone pointed out to me that a lot of my containers that I make have an Ikebana style to it.”

Roark said that anyone can make succulent wreaths and urged anyone interested to learn how.

“It doesn’t require any special skills, maybe just a bit of patience.”

Q I own a four-plex in an area where rental rates have recently begun to in-crease. I have not been able to raise

the rents on my property for several years, so I recently gave a 30-day notice of an 8 percent increase to all four of my tenants. One of the tenants told me he could not af-ford the increase and he gave me a written 30-day notice that he was vacating.

About a week later he contacted me to tell me that he changed his mind and has de-cided to stay, and accept the increase. This tenant has been occasionally late paying his rent in the past and I am worried that he really won’t be able to afford the additional rental rate.

Now that he has cancelled his notice of termination, what are my options? I am thinking about requiring him to agree to a new credit check so that I can tell whether he will be able to pay the new rental amount. Can I do that?

A When a tenant serves a written notice of termination, that notice is binding on the tenant. The tenant does not

have a right to unilaterally revoke the ter-mination. A tenant who gives notice and then remains in the property beyond the time frame of the 30-day notice is no lon-ger a lawful tenant and can be named in an unlawful detainer eviction case on the

31st day. Of course, you

can always agree to allow your tenant to revoke his no-tice, but that means you have the right to place conditions on your agreement to allow the tenant to remain. A new credit check is a

reasonable condition, and not a violation of the tenant’s right to privacy because you are essentially creating a new tenancy and you have a reasonable concern about his finan-cial stability.

Based on the concept that he is re-apply-ing to become a tenant, you can charge the customary fee for a credit check, and you can deny his request to continue his tenancy if the check raises red flags. All of these points should be set out in a written agree-ment with this tenant setting the terms of your offer to allow him to stay. That way, both sides understand the conditions and the options available to them as you process your final decision.

Children take to gardening like they take to play. After all what is more fun than

playing in the dirt, pulling things out of the ground, breaking sticks, planting seeds, playing with the hose and picking and smelling flowers?

The following tips will be about supporting this play, directing it a bit and encouraging learning from it. At any age there is always more to learn when it comes to plants and how to grow them. I will start with the beginning, how to start seeds and write about planting, cultivating (continue to grow), planning and identifying easy-to-grow plants that all children love. Here are the tips:

1. Start some radish, lettuce

and Swiss chard seeds in a paper towel folded in half and d a m p e n e d with a little water. Keep it warm but not hot, and keep it moist. In a

few days to a couple of weeks the seeds will sprout. This is an op-portunity to teach your children about how seeds hold the life of the plant in them, sending down roots to reach the soil and leaves, up to find the light.

2. Once you have seedlings it is time to learn about soil. Buy some potting soil or compost and sift it

with a colander or wire basket. This will create a medium about the texture of rice that is ideal for new seedlings. Fill small paper cups or used milk cartons with this mix and punch three holes in the bottom for water to drain out. Plant one seedling in each cup by holding the leaf and lifting it care-fully off of the paper towel. Try not to touch the stem of the seed-ling because it is so fragile it will crush with the slightest touch.

3. Water the seedlings ev-ery other day until they are big enough to transplant into the ground (about 4 inches high with plenty of roots).

4. Dig up a garden plot in a sun-ny place adding about 4 inches of compost. Demonstrate with adult tools but provide smaller tools for young people. If this is a new gar-den plot try to dig at least 8 inches down. If it is easier to dig then go 12 inches. This gives new roots plenty of room to grow. If kids get

bored that is OK. They can bring compost, plants and the hose to the site while you finish digging. I like to start the first plot at about 6 feet by 6 feet.

5. Plant in a somewhat system-atic way (rows, circles, clusters or your design). This lets you know where to weed when it comes time for that.

6. Plant and or transplant your seedlings at the same depth they grew in their containers. Too deep and they will die, too shallow and they will fall over.

7. Turn everything into a learn-ing experience. For younger chil-dren learn the names common and Latin of the plants. As they get older learn more about the history of that plant like where it came from originally, who first cultivated it, how is it different from the original mother plant.

8. Include botany into science studies in school. Learn and share with children how roots grow,

how cells divide, the difference between root and trunk cells and how leaves do photo synthesis.

9. Learn and share about hy-bridization — how fragrance was lost when roses were bred for flower size and color, how corn went from being a simple grass to a super crop that depends on man to reproduce it. Hint, read “The Omnivore’s Dilemma” by Michael Pollan.

10. Visit arboretums to learn about the thousands of genus and species of plants. Continue study-ing and learning with your chil-dren by traveling the world and visiting countries with rich botan-ical history, such as China, India, England and South America.
