NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen

10:30 A.M. PALM/PASSION SUNDAY LITURGY PRELUDE PALM/PASSION SUNDAY PSALM 31:9-16 (Congregation remains seated) 9Have mercy on me, O LORD, for I | am in trouble; my eye is consumed with sorrow, and also my throat | and my belly. 10For my life is wasted with grief, and my | years with sighing; my strength fails me because of affliction, and my bones | are consumed. 11I am the scorn of my enemies, a disgrace to my neighbors, a dismay to | my acquaintances; when they see me in the street | they avoid me. 12Like the dead I am forgotten, | out of mind; I am as useless as a | broken pot. 13For I have heard the whispering of the crowd; fear is | all around; they put their heads together against me; they plot to | take my life. 14But as for me, I have trusted in | you, O LORD. I have said, "You | are my God. 15My times are | in your hand; rescue me from the hand of my enemies, and from those who | persecute me. 16Let your face shine up- | on your servant; save me in your | steadfast love." (Gloria Patri) LET US PRAY: Mercifully assist us, O Lord God of our salvation, that we may

Passion/Palm Sunday April 5, 2020

PROCESSIONAL “All Glory, Laud and Honor” Theodulph of Orleans, John Mason Neale, Melchior Teschner

Refrain: All glory, laud and honor to you, redeemer king, To whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring.

You are the king of Israel and David's royal Son, now in the Lord's name coming, our King and Blessed One. refrain

The company of angels are praising you on high; creation and all mortals in chorus make reply. refrain

The multitude of pilgrims with palms before you went; our praise and prayer and anthems before you we present. refrain

To you, before your passion, they sang their hymns of praise. To you, now high exalted, our melody we raise. refrain

Their praises you accepted; accept the prayers we bring, great author of all goodness, O good and gracious King! refrain

LENTEN HYMN “Beneath the Cross of Jesus” Elizabeth C. Clephane, Frederick C. Maker

1 Beneath the cross of Jesus I long to take my stand; the shadow of a mighty rock within a weary land, a home within a wilderness, a rest upon the way, from the burning of the noontide heat and the burdens of the day.

2 Upon the cross of Jesus, my eye at times can see the very dying form of one who suffered there for me. And from my contrite heart, with tears, two wonders I confess: the wonder of his glorious love and my unworthiness.

3 I take, O cross, your shadow for my abiding place; I ask no other sunshine than the sunshine of his face; content to let the world go by, to know no gain nor loss, my sinful self my only shame, my glory all, the cross.

COMMUNION HYMN “O Sacred Head, Now Wounded” Paul Gerhardt, Arnulf of Louvain, Hans Leo Hassler

1 O sacred head, now wounded, with grief and shame weighed down, now scornfully surrounded with thorns, thine only crown; O sacred head, what glory, what bliss till now was thine! Yet, though despised and gory, I joy to call thee mine.

2 How pale thou art with anguish, with sore abuse and scorn; how does thy face now languish, which once was bright as morn! Thy grief and bitter passion were all for sinners' gain; mine, mine was the transgression, but thine the deadly pain.

3 What language shall I borrow to thank thee, dearest friend, for this thy dying sorrow, thy pity without end? Oh, make me thine forever, and should I fainting be, Lord, let me never, never outlive my love to thee.

4 Lord, be my consolation; shield me when I must die; remind me of thy passion when my last hour draws nigh. These eyes, new faith receiving, from thee shall never move; for all who die believing die safely in thy love.

SENDING HYMN “Jesus, Keep Me Near the Cross”

Fanny J. Crosby, William H. Doane 1 Jesus, keep me near the cross, there's a precious fountain; free to all, a healing stream flows from Calv'ry's mountain. In the cross, in the cross be my glory ever; till my ransomed soul shall find rest beyond the river. 3 Near the cross! O Lamb of God, bring its scenes before me; help me walk from day to day with its shadow o'er me. In the cross, in the cross be my glory ever; till my ransomed soul shall find rest beyond the river.

INVITATORY P: Christ has humbled himself and became obedient to death. C: EVEN TO DEATH ON A CROSS. P: Christ was wounded for our transgressions and bruised for our iniquities. C: AND ON CHRIST WAS THE CHASTISEMENT THAT MADE US WHOLE. P: Faithfulness to the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, C: OUR SALVATION, LIFE, AND HOPE.

“Ah, holy Jesus, how hast thou offended that we to judge thee have in hate pretended? By foes derided, by thine own rejected, O most afflicted.” (ELW 349)

SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINES: “As we enter the inner world of the Spiritual Disciplines there will always be the danger of turning them into laws. But we are not left to our own devices. Jesus Christ has promised to be our Teacher and Guide. His voice is not too hard to hear. His instruction is not too hard to understand. If we are beginning to calcify what should always remain alive and growing, Jesus will tell us. We can trust his teaching. If we are wandering off toward some wrong idea or unprofitable practice, Jesus will guide us back. If we are willing to listen to the Heavenly Monitor, we will receive the instruction we need. Our world is hungry for genuinely changed people. Leo Tolstoy observed, “everybody thinks of changing humanity and nobody thinks of changing self.” Let us be among those who believe that the inner transformation of our lives is a goal worthy of our best effort”. (Richard J. Foster) During the weeks of Lent the Christian community at Gethsemane Lutheran has been exploring the “abundant life” given by God as Jesus comes to us: baptism, eucharist, prayer, corporate worship, Bible reading, servanthood, family/friends the Christian grows into the life God intends for each one of us. ELCA GOOD GIFTS are a creative, meaningful way to support the ministries of the ELCA that means the most to you and your loved ones. Your donation will be used where it is needed most within the gift category selected. For example, a gift of vaccinations may be used to support other health care initiatives. This allows for flexibility and the ability to give where the need is the greatest. The ELCA is hard at work in nearly 80 countries around the world. What are some of the projects? Chickens, goats and other farm animals, global mission volunteers, scholarships for seminary students in the United States, blankets and supply kits to refugees, community fish farms, clinic visits for children, basic necessities and assistance following floods and wildfires, mosquito nets to families, bee keeping training, children vaccinated and school supplies.
