Palm Sunday (Cycle A) A Sunday Reflection Holy Week begins. The Lord enters Jerusalem amid shouts of

Hosanna. And yet, in a few days these same people will turn against Him and cry: “Crucify him!” As the liturgy tells us, our King goes to His crucifixion like a gentle lamb.

Two thousand years later, our Lord is still mocked and crucified in His little ones: the poor, the persecuted, the imprisoned, the sick. Even we, His followers, sometimes forget and offend Him.

This Holy Week we will not be able to gather as usual to observe the Lord’s Passion due to the coronavirus pandemic. I invite you to join us in this week’s celebrations through our live streams, which are listed in this bulletin. Let us not succumb to fear and anxiety. The prophet Isaiah tells us in the Fourth Song of the Suffering Servant, that “it was our infirmities that [Christ] bore, our sufferings that he endured” (Is 53:4). We are assured of victory by the Blood of His cross. Let us sacrifice and make reparation for our sins and for all the offenses Jesus receives, uniting our sufferings to His for the salvation of the world.

Reflexión Dominical Comienza la Semana Santa. El Señor entra en Jerusalén entre gritos

de Hosanna. Y sin embargo, dentro de pocos días estos mismos que hoy lo alaban se volverán contra Él gritando: “¡Crucifícalo!” Como nos dice la liturgia, nuestro Rey va a la crucifixión como manso cordero.

Dos mil años más tarde, nuestro Señor sigue siendo objeto de burlas y crucificado en Sus pobres, los perseguidos, los que sufren prisión, los enfermos. Hasta Sus seguidores lo olvidamos y lo ofendemos.

Esta Semana Santa no podremos reunirnos como otros años para conmemorar la Pasión del Señor a causa de la pandemia del coronavirus. Los invito a que estemos unidos en estas celebraciones a través de nuestras transmisiones en línea. El horario aparece en este boletín. No nos dejemos vencer por el temor y la ansiedad. El profeta Isaías nos dice, en el Cuarto Canto del Siervo Doliente, que Cristo “soportó nuestros sufrimientos y aguantó nuestros dolores” (Is 53,4) Tenemos asegurada la victoria por la Sangre de Su cruz. Hagamos sacrificio y reparación por nuestros pecados y por todas las ofensas que recibe Jesús, uniendo nuestros sacrificios al Suyo por la salvación del mundo.

The Easter Triduum

WITH THE MASS OF THE LORD’S SUPPER, we will begin the Easter Triduum of Christ’s passion, death and resurrection, which is the culmination of the whole liturgical year and the pinnacle of our Christian life as well. The Triduum begins with the commemoration of the Last Supper. Jesus, on the eve of his passion, offered his body and blood to the Father under the species of bread and wine and, which he gave to the Apostles as nourishment with the command that they perpetuate the offering in his memory. The Gospel of this celebration, recalling the washing of the feet, expresses the same meaning of the Eucharist under another perspective…. as service to God and to his brothers.

IN THE LITURGY OF GOOD FRIDAY we shall meditate on the mystery of Christ’s death and adore the Cross. In the final moments of his life, before giving up his spirit to the Father, Jesus said: “It is finished” (Jn 19:30). What do these words mean?... It means that the work of salvation is finished, that all of the Scriptures have found their total fulfillment in the love of Christ, the immolated Lamb. Jesus, by his Sacrifice, has transformed the greatest iniquity into the greatest love.

AND ON THE GREAT EASTER VIGIL, in which the Alleluia resounds once more, we celebrate Christ Risen, the centre and the purpose of the cosmos and of history; we keep vigil filled with hope in expectation of his coming return, when Easter will be fully manifest…. Christ has conquered death, and we are with Him. Our life does not end at the stone of the sepulchre, our life goes beyond with hope in Christ who is Risen from that very tomb. As Christians we are called to be sentinels of the dawn, who can discern the signs of the Risen One.

El Triduo Pascual CON LA SANTA MISA «DE LA CENA DEL SEÑOR», tendrá inicio el Triduo pascual de la

pasión, muerte y resurrección de Cristo, que es el ápice de todo el año litúrgico y también el ápice de nuestra vida cristiana. El Triduo se abre con la conmemoración de la última Cena. Jesús, la víspera de su pasión, ofreció al Padre su cuerpo y su sangre bajo las especies del pan y del vino y, entregándolo como alimento a los Apóstoles, les mandó perpetuar esta entrega en su memoria. El Evangelio de esta celebración, al recordar el lavatorio de los pies, expresa el mismo significado de la Eucaristía bajo otra perspectiva (…) como servicio a Dios y a los hermanos.

EN LA LITURGIA DEL VIERNES SANTO meditamos el misterio de la muerte de Cristo y adoramos la Cruz. En los últimos instantes de vida, antes de entregar el espíritu al Padre, Jesús dijo: «Está cumplido» (Jn 19, 30). ¿Qué significan estas palabras?, (…) Significa que la obra de la salvación está cumplida, que todas las Escrituras encuentran su plena realización en el amor del Cristo, Cordero inmolado. Jesús, con su Sacrificio, transformó la más grande iniquidad en el más grande amor.

Y EN LA GRAN VIGILIA PASCUAL, donde resuena nuevamente el Alleluia, celebramos a Cristo Resucitado, centro y fin del cosmos y de la historia; velamos llenos de esperanza mientras aguardamos su regreso, cuando la Pascua tendrá su plena manifestación. (…) Cristo venció la muerte, y nosotros con Él. Nuestra vida no acaba ante la piedra de un sepulcro, nuestra vida va más allá con la esperanza en Cristo que resucitó precisamente de ese sepulcro. Como cristianos estamos llamados a ser centinelas de la mañana, que saben distinguir los signos del Resucitado.

Holy Lives / Vidas Santas SERVANT OF GOD RAFAEL GARCÍA-HERREROS (1909

-1992) — Colombian priest, member of the Congregation of Jesus and Mary, founded by St. John Eudes, he was ordained to the priesthood in 1944. Between 1934 and 1954, he formed seminarians in various seminaries around the country. In 1946 he began his work with the media, first on the radio and later, starting January 1955 on television, where he appeared for 37 years in the well-known show El Minuto de Dios (God’s Minute). At the same time, he started a low-cost neighborhood for the poor in Cali and later, in 1957, in Bogotá, known as Barrio El Minuto de Dios.

In 1961 he organized El Banquete del Millón (the Million-Dollar Banquet) in which the participants paid a large sum for a simple dinner of broth and bread to support the charitable works of El Minuto de Dios Foundation. The TV program is still broadcast after his

death, with a simple wooden cross behind the current conductor. After 65 years of uninterrupted broadcasting, it is the longest running show on Colombian television.

Fr. García Herreros passed away in 1992 at the age of 83.

SIERVO DE DIOS RAFAEL GARCÍA-HERREROS (1909-1992) — Sacerdote colombiano, Miembro de la Congregación de Jesús y María, fundada por San Juan Eudes, se ordenó sacerdote en 1944. Entre 1934 y 1954 se dedicó a formar seminaristas en diferentes centros del país. En 1946 comenzó una carrera vinculada a los medios de comunicación: primero en la radio y luego, desde el 10 de enero de 1955 y durante 37 años continuos, en televisión, con su conocido programa El Minuto de Dios. Al mismo tiempo, comenzó la construcción de un barrio popular en Cali y después, a partir de 1957, al occidente de Bogotá, el barrio El Minuto de Dios.

Desde noviembre de 1961, por iniciativa de García-Herreros se realiza el Banquete del Millón un evento en el que los participantes pagan una costosa entrada a una sencilla cena en la que se sirve caldo y pan para sostener las obras de la Fundación Minuto de Dios. El Minuto de Dios ha seguido transmitiéndose tras la muerte del P. García-Herreros, con la sencilla escenografía de una cruz de madera con el travesaño inclinado, detrás de la imagen del conductor actual del programa y con la misma oración al final. El programa, el más antiguo de la televisión colombiana, lleva 65 años de transmisión ininterrumpida.

El P. García-Herreros falleció el 24 de noviembre de 1992 a los 83 años de edad.

The Pope Speaks / Habla el Papa

General Audience, Wednesday of Holy Week, 2014 Jesus attains complete humiliation through “death on the

Cross”. It was the worst form of death, that reserved for slaves and criminals. Jesus was considered a prophet but

he died like a criminal. As we contemplate Jesus in his Passion, we see reflected the suffering of humanity, and

we discover the divine answer to the mystery of evil, suffering and death. Many times we feel horror at the evil

and suffering that surrounds us and we ask ourselves: “Why does God allow it?”. It deeply wounds us to see

suffering and death, especially that of the innocent! When we see children suffer it wounds our hearts: it is the mystery of evil. And Jesus

takes all of this evil, all of this suffering upon himself. This week it would benefit all of us to look at the crucifix, to kiss the wounds of Jesus, to kiss them on the

crucifix. He took upon himself all human suffering, he clothed himself in this suffering.

Audiencia General, Miércoles Santo de 2014 Jesús alcanza la completa humillación con la «muerte de cruz». Se trata de la

peor muerte, la que se reservaba a los esclavos y a los delincuentes. Jesús era considerado un profeta, pero muere como un delincuente. Contemplando a Jesús en su pasión, vemos como en un espejo los sufrimientos de la humanidad y encontramos la respuesta divina al misterio del mal, del dolor, de la muerte. Muchas veces sentimos horror por el mal y el dolor que nos rodea y nos preguntamos: «¿Por qué Dios lo permite?». Es una profunda herida para nosotros ver el sufrimiento y la muerte, especialmente de los inocentes. Cuando vemos sufrir a los niños se nos hace una herida en el corazón: es el misterio del mal. Y Jesús carga sobre sí todo este mal, todo este sufrimiento. Esta semana nos hará bien a todos nosotros mirar el crucifijo, besar las llagas de Jesús, besarlas en el crucifijo. Él cargó sobre sí todo el sufrimiento humano, se revistió con este sufrimiento.

ASH WEDNESDAY AND GOOD FRIDAY are days of fast for all Catholics between 18 and 59 years of age. One full meal and two smaller,

meatless meals are permitted. Abstinence is to be observed on all Fridays of Lent as well as Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Catholics

14 years and older are bound to abstain from meat.

This year, the St. Hugh Parish Sr. Kathleen Donnelly Scholarship Committee

will select one or more award recipients who will receive or share up to $10,000 of scholarship funding, covering up to 95% of annual tuition, books, and school

related fees for one school year. The scholarship is need based and the exact amount awarded will be determined by the Scholarship Committee.

Deadline is May 1, 2020.
