As always, the Condo 1 board wishes all unit owners and renters a safe and happy season.

The ballots for the unit owners have been sent out by the 13th Floor Developers. Please VOTE. The community needs to know your wishes for this enterprise and if you don’t vote, the result will be a NO Vote. The date for returning your ballot is April 15th. Things are looking up for our community. The ballots are flowing in and we hope that a positive result will bring us a new look and fantastic amenities.

A note about our President Susan Herman. She has been working diligently on the closing and future use of the golf course for over three years. She has spent thousands of hours going over every detail with Thirteen Floor, the lawyers, Tom Aldrich and Marilyn Diekmann, the other two members of the Palm Greens Community Association. Our controller, Audi Hartley, is always looking for ways to save money. One example is hiring a different phone company, Comcast, for our office phone system. It cut our phone bill in half. Audi also has changed the rental renewals to one page which streamlines the process.

EDITORIAL FROM THE MANAGING EDITOR

by Mel Clapman

It was bound to happen and you knew it…the final issue of The Pulse for this season. And quite a season it was. The 13th Floor and Golf Course Program. The endless repairs on our clubhouse elevator and swimming pools and structural foundations. And on and on.

So I decided to shift gears and take the high ground by closing our season with a series of “Thank You-s”

Following the tradition of “The Oscars”, I am sure I will leave somebody or a group out, so let me say up front, Sorry.

Thank you to the two Condo Boards and the Palm Greens Community Association who really put it out, working tirelessly on the 13th Floor-Golf Course Program. If you don’t understand what this project is about and the work they put in to keep us all informed, then you seriously missed the boat. Many meetings by the Boards, with and without people from the 13th Floor in attendance. Photos and layouts of the proposed new development (Delray Trails) and casual get-togethers in the clubhouse where residents with questions got accurate answers. All of this culminating during the first week in March, where volunteers were presented with a fabulous nosh along with the “history” of how the program got started and ending with the handouts of proxies and ballots. Yes, we are now officially “into it”…voting and helping to get the vote out. I will spare you the lecture on why your vote counts and what a “YES” vote can mean to the future of our beloved Palm Greens. If you don’t understand by now, please take a mental step back and think it out.

Thank you to the maintenance staff who fix our broken offices and keep them clean and assemble the

ALLIANCE OF DELRAY RESIDENTIAL

ASSOCIATIONSby Judy Goldberg

This is not an April Fools Joke. By now we have collected 100’s of votes for the 13th Floor Project. Don’t forget to vote.!!! No crystal ball available at this writing. We are winding down with our winter season and it has been busy and full of fun! Safe trip home for all of our Northern friends. Enjoy your summer.

The Alliance held a great meeting in March. We learned a lot about The Old School Square complex in Delray. Chairperson of the Board, Felice Johnson, introduced the Artistic Director, Matthew Farmer, and he gave us some history of the area. The Cornell building was originally (in 1913) an elementary school and the Crest Theater was both an elementary and high school. It was named a historical site by the Historical Society, thus saving the property from destruction. The site now serves as a cultural arts center, providing art, music and entertainment events for our community. Matthew gave a sample of the offerings of Old School Square by showing film clips then singing some selections. We can take art classes, as well as see great plays that tour. One event will be The Golden Girls in Puppet Parody. (Think Avenue Q), as well as the acrobatic team from Greatest Show on Earth. There will also be an “Italian Wedding” similar to the off Broadway show. Worth checking the programs out on line. So much talent to share. Memberships are available.

Captain Van Sandt again emphasized the importance of LOCKING OUR CARS!! This has become one of the most common crimes and most cars are not locked. Solution is simple enough. Also, do not leave valuables exposed in the car. He also said one of the big scams on seniors are medical offices. When going for tests, X-rays etc. Leave your valuables home or lock them up in the office lockers. Unfortunately, not all staff is honest, and items have been stolen. Credit cards are a big item. In addition, greater consideration to vetting of Home Health Workers is needed as not all are honest…seniors can be easy marks, especially when ill.

Fire Rescue Chief Kim Hude detailed her department’s efforts to rescue pets during a fire. She suggested that notice of a pet in the home should be posted in a prominent place. Call the Fire Department as they do have stickers available.

Volunteers are needed for the 2020 census. A lot is done online and it is important for funding of local

RECREATION BOARDby Shelly Cohen

I can’t believe it is April and the snow birds have started to fly up north. For those of you still here we’re still in full bloom and continuing to enjoy the weather.

I was hoping as of the printing of this article I could give you a final count of the proxy votes for the 13th Floor project. However, I can say that when I typed this it was very close to a YES vote. Thank you all for believing that it’s a good thing for Palm Greens and we look forward to the project proceeding.

Meanwhile we are continuing to maintain the recreation area including landscaping and repairs to things that crop up. The café is experiencing better than expected turnout and all positive feedback. Heather has been an asset to the dining room with everyone giving her accolades for her service.

For the card and mahjong players at the pool please note that we are aware of the seating complaints and are addressing the issue. Unfortunately, it’s not easy! It seems that the highest seat measurement we have found isn’t the best. But we’re not giving up.

The equipment in the fitness room is failing, we know, and we are doing our best to keep up with it. We have repaired some and replaced some as the problems arise. We thank you for your understanding. Please continue to keep us aware of any and all problems.

We’re continuing to work on next year’s needs and our staff, as always, is available to address your concerns.

For those of you returning to your summer home be safe and see you soon. And please, before you leave, VOTE!

Have you considered registering for membership in the Palm Greens Unit Owners Association? You can benefit from discounts with Pride Air Conditioning and Nozzle Nolen. Stop in at the UOAPG office in the clubhouse to find out more about this offer. Hours are Monday through Friday, 9:15 to 11am,

MEN’S CLUB by Morty Teisch

Leaving already? Hey! You just got here. Or at least it seems that way. Somehow, the seasons seemed to be longer. Ah yes, I remember it well. To all the snow birds who will be leaving, we wish you a safe trip, and with the Good Lord’s help, we will once again be reunited for the new season.

We concluded our season of entertainment with a terrific singer named Georgine Barger who displayed a voice range from baritone to soprano, and was much appreciated by the members. We also heard some coming attractions from next month’s speaker, dealing with a new and popular trend, genetic and DNA testing. Attend that meeting on April 7. It should be quite interesting.

Well, we finally got off the ground with our golf tournament against Emerald Pointe, showing up in all our Men’s Club finery.Q: How did you make out? A: We really looked good! Q: Yes, but how did you make out? A: The photo came out great!Q: Yes, but how did you make out? A: No more questions.

I look forward to seeing all remaining members at our meeting of April 7. Any further details will be posted on Channel 63.

TENNISCOMMITTEE

by Bob Krokus and Beverly Clapman

April has arrived, the time when year-rounders have mixed emotions. They say good- bye to good friends who they won’t see for a few months, but they regain the serenity of Delray Beach.....no worries about reservations at restaurants, no lines at the movies, the golf courses to themselves, tennis courts always available, but sadly, sometimes too available. Ultimately they make it all work. So those of you packing up to head north, we wish you safe travels, a good summer, and come back to us in good health, ready to start another tennis season at Palm Greens!

Your Tennis Committee accomplished a lot this season.......the rotation is up and running, the ball machine is being used on a regular basis, there are two new first-aid kits between courts 3 and 4, and also on court 7, and hopefully when you return we will have a new user-friendly sign-in sheet for the rotation program. In addition, we sponsored two successful events, both followed by brunches catered by our own Chris Sadej, in the Clubhouse.

The winners of the Mixed Doubles Round Robin were: 1st Place, Manon Heroux with a perfect score of 16-0, 2nd Place, Serge Lacharite and 3rd Place, Louise Watson. Congratulations to them all.

For those of you interested, the vote that was taken by all the players of the women’s inter-condo teams resulted in a 26 – 16 decision to keep the teams as they are. Hopefully some new players will become available to add to the rosters of the teams in need. And speaking of the women’s teams, we have a winner once again! Our Level 6 team, captained by Lynn Jacobson, with her co-captain Susan Wasserstein, took first place in their division and won their playoff match, sending them to Glen Eagles to participate in the championship round. We wish them well.

On a maintenance note, Har-Tru has been added to the courts and there should be new tape lines put down by the time you return, along with new windsocks where needed.

Rotation officially ends, Friday, April 26. Please continue to make use of the courts by making your own games. Balls will be provided throughout the off-season. They will be given out on Mondays. Use them for the

POI FOR PALM GREENERSby Mel Clapman

Before you leave us for the summer, pack a bag (beach and casualwear), jump in the car and head north for a 90-minute drive to Vero Beach, a small Florida city, with Atlantic-facing beaches on a barrier island across the Indian River Lagoon. South Beach Park offers wide sands and volleyball courts. Downtown’s South Beach Park chronicles the local citrus industry. On the outskirts, McKee Botanical Garden has tropical plants and water lily–filled streams. To the north, Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge shelters brown pelicans.

If you’re looking to “chill out”, try a quiet stroll on one of Vero Beach’s beaches. You might wind up encountering more wildlife than people, including pelicans, turtles and sandpipers. The Indian River Lagoon, which runs between the mainland and the barrier island, is the most biodiverse lagoon ecosystem in Earth’s Northern hemisphere. Home to more than 3,000 species of plants and animals, it’s best explored by kayak with Florida Outdoor Center’s nature guide Kristen Beck.

If you’re willing to put in the time, we suggest visiting the Environmental Learning Center – 255 Live Oak

MEDITATION CLASSby Tirtzah Israel

Have you wondered about the Meditation class at Palm Greens, or its benefits?

Generally speaking, meditation can help reduce stress and anxiety while boosting the creative mind, granting the practitioner a heightened sense of awareness.

Meditation is not a passive activity, but very dynamic, engaging practice while being actively quiet. Not surprising, the more meditation is practiced, the more efficacious it becomes for the practitioner.

No matter the tradition, there is no “one” type of meditation. Each can be cross pollenated into the other depending upon the desired goal and practice.

Meditation is an ancient spiritual practice while if practiced (or performed) correctly can improve the quality of one’s mind, emotion, body and spirit. The more common forms of meditation practiced in the United States, include, but not limited to:

Transcendental Meditation, a spiritual form where the goal is to transcend or raise one’s state on being.

Mindfulness Meditation, where the focus is on gaining awareness of “presence in the moment”.

Breathing Meditation that focuses on the rhythm of the breathing cycle.

Loving-Kindness Meditation that cultivates love and kindness for self and everything else.

The meditation class at Palm Greens is led by Tirtzah Israel who is trained in the Healing Arts of Meditation by Dr. Douglas Goldhamer, Ph.D., DD her teacher and mentor in Ancient Practice of Meditation.

I blend the benefits of various methods for meditation that raises our unique consciousness for love, balance and healing. By blending aspects of complimentary methods, the practitioner can activate the best of themselves.

FROM THE TENNIS PROby Jim Boardman (USTPA Pro)

ALWAYS LOOK AHEAD --In doubles, inexperienced

players often make the mistake of looking back if their partner is at the

baseline hitting the ball. Don’t do that!Instead, keep your eyes on your opponents. But,

which one should you focus on? Imagine two mean dogs live on your street. One is

in the house at the end of the block and the other is in the house next door.. When you walk down the street, which dog do you pay attention to first? The one next door. Always keep your eyes on the dog who is most likely to bite you…the opposing net player!

THE HEALTH ROOMby Mel Clapman

We offered a program to residents of Palm Greens on CPR.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, organized by Merle Nuelight. Here is a follow-up on CPR for those of you who would like something handy to have as a helpful reminder.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation is a lifesaving technique useful in many emergencies, including a heart attack or near drowning, in which someone’s breathing or heartbeat has stopped. The American Heart Association recommends that everyone — untrained bystanders and medical personnel alike — begin CPR with chest compressions.

It’s far better to do something than to do nothing at all if you’re fearful that your knowledge or abilities aren’t 100 percent complete. Remember, the difference between doing something and doing nothing could be someone’s life.

Here’s advice from the American Heart Association:• Untrained. If you’re not trained in CPR, then

provide hands-only CPR. That means uninterrupted chest compressions of 100 to 120 a minute until paramedics arrive. You don’t need to try rescue breathing.

• Trained and ready to go. If you’re well-trained and confident in your ability, check to see if there is a pulse and breathing. If there is no breathing or a pulse within 10 seconds, begin chest compressions. Start CPR with 30 chest compressions before giving two rescue breaths.

• Trained but rusty. If you’ve previously received CPR training but you’re not confident in your abilities, then just do chest compressions at a rate of 100 to 120 a minute. The above advice applies to adults, children and infants needing CPR, but not newborns (infants up to 4 weeks old).

CPR can keep oxygenated blood flowing to the brain and other vital organs until more definitive medical treatment can restore a normal heart rhythm.

When the heart stops, the lack of oxygenated blood can cause brain damage in only a few minutes. A person may die within eight to 10 minutes.

To learn CPR properly, take an accredited first-aid training course, including CPR and how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED). If you are

WE CAREAs the name of our organization implies we care for all

residents of Palm Greens. to make sure that all their needs for being healthy are being taken care of.

We transport them to medical facilities, and we provide walkers, canes, and wheelchairs when they are in need.

To be able to do all that we have to do for our resident and their guests, we always are in need of volunteers. Without volunteers, any organization would have to hire people to do the job that is done now in Palm Greens.

Palm Greens is very fortunate that there are many volunteers that staff all our clubs, and staff our boards and they do so without any compensation, otherwise if we have to pay for this kind of service that the volunteers do, our maintenance would be triple what it is today.

In case any residents are in need of our services, please call 495-0878 which is monitored by one of our volunteers who gives the information to another volunteer.

Please give us 24 hours and leave your name and a telephone number where we can reach you.

FRIDAY NIGHT MOVIE

Before we start, here is a piece of trivia to share with your friends.

For the movie, “Silence of the Lambs”, who was first considered for the role of Hannibal Lecter?

The answer: Gene Hackman! After the offer, his advisors sat him down and told him if he took the role, he would lose his fan base in a heartbeat. Don’t you just love it??

For the last 20 years we have been showing movies in our clubhouse. The Unit Owners Association are the sponsor of our movies, they pay for the movies that we receive from Netflix.

During the season our Friday Night Movies are very well attended. And we work hard to make these movies appealing to our residents. Just recently, we showed “The Green Book”. And it was still playing in local movie houses.

We advertise what movies are going to be shown on our channel 63 as well as on our bulletin board in the clubhouse.

If any resident would like to see a favorite movie, all they need to do is leave a note in our UOAPG box and we will try to get the movie if it is possible.

Lights. Camera. Action!

SCRABBLE CLUBby George Fitzgerald

As you’d expect, new words are a topic of high interest at the Scrabble Club. We think the publisher of the Official Scrabble Dictionary works to ensure repeat sales by changing the rules on common words from time to time. One example is the Irish word “Da,” meaning father or dad. It was an accepted Scrabble word in 1991, it was excluded in the mid 2000s, but it is now officially accepted again in the latest 2019 edition. Of course, new words constantly enter the lexicon from media, the Internet and young people. One example is the word “Dox.” Before the most recent dictionary, only “Doxy” and “Doxie” were accepted, both meaning doctrine. Dox is now an accepted term, and we hope it never happens to you. It means to have your private personal information published online without your consent. One thing we do hope is for you to join us at our next Scrabble Club meeting – every Monday at 1:00 by the pool. See you there!

removed while you are driving. You could get a ticket.New trash cans will be provided by the County

Waste Authority to each unit. They are the type that the truck can pick up without a person. They will be delivered to us during either August or September of this year. Collections will begin on October 1, 2019. Snow birds will need to ask their house sitters or neighbors to put them in the trash area when they are delivered. Old cans can be put out on the bulk service day, one of the regular collection days. There will be no change in recyclable pick-ups. Details will be available on the Condo 2 website.

The bridge on El Clair Ranch Road at the north end before Flavor Pict Road will be replaced by the State beginning in the fall of this year and will take approximately one year. You will have to use other routes to go north.

furniture we need to do our work. They are there when you need them.

Thank you Chris and Charles (in the Rec Office) who just “do it”. Need a room set up for a meeting? Done. Need a snack or a meal for a group or a team? Done. Need copies or faxes or legal documents taken care of? Done.

Thank you to the women who manage the front desks of Condos 1 and 2. If Happy Hour wasn’t invented for them, we wouldn’t have one.

Thank you to the people who make sure our tennis courts are well maintained. Lines and playing areas clean and neat. Nets ready for play. Seating available for spectators and players. Water available for tournament players. And thank you for keeping the 2 pools and surrounding areas clean and neat, along with those overhead fans and rest rooms.

We go on. Thank you to our Pulse writers. They come through for seven consecutive months with articles that are well-written, provocative and timely. And they never miss a deadline. Ever! Beth Villanova, our production manager, Rhoda Misikoff, our advertising manager and I appreciate all you do to help us do a good job.

And, finally, Thank You to the officers and managers of all of the Palm Greens Clubs. Not only do they keep it interesting, they are financial contributors to a number of charities and worthy causes. All this in addition to sponsoring book-reading sessions, Yoga, meditation, fashion shows, the Meet & Greet event, the singing and tap-dancing groups and – my personal favorite – social events, from Red, White and Blue to the hard-to-beat Benvenuto’s Final Party of the Season. None of this would happen if it wasn’t for a group of hard-working people who task themselves with the responsibility of giving our residents the opportunity to enjoy themselves and enjoy their lives while making new friends as an extra-added bonus.

WHOA…left out three people. Thank you to Tony DeNiro and Bob Villanova for contributing their paintings – and talents – we appreciate it. And thanks to our new librarian, Estelle Simard, who is putting our library back into shape. Pushing that rock up the hill is a good analogy.

I hear the background music starting up so I guess I’ll close by saying to everyone heading back to where they spend their summers, safe trip and maybe come back with a Pulse-worthy story.

And to those of us who remain in Palm Greens fulltime, take a step back, take a deep breath and give thanks for finding yourselves in Palm Greens. What could be better!

week, return them to us the following Monday and receive a fresh can.

As the season draws to an end, we would like to thank Jim Boardman, our Tennis Pro, for the productive clinics he provided. Joe Healy, our liaison to the Rec Board, Chris Sadej, our caterer extraordinaire, Terry, Ginny and Sue, our wonderful pastry ladies, and Elliott and Norman for being Elliott and Norman. And lastly, our terrific committee who made our position as Co-Chairs so much easier, Sydell, Beth, Mike, Jacques, Carole, Sue and Sara.

Once again, we wish you all a wonderful summer wherever your travels take you and to all our residents staying in Delray Beach.

Enjoy your time on the courts!Game-Set-Match!Bev and Bob, Co-Chairs

to 2 years old. FREE admission for Children under 2. Any shoppers in your crowd? Nearby Indian River

Mall has Dillard’s, Macy’s, and 70 specialty stores. The Vero Beach Outlets (1824 94th Drive - just west of Highway 95) features over 60 designer and brand name stores boasting big discounts.

The Ocean Drive Farmer’s Market happens each Saturday from 8am to 12 noon. Vendors offer a wide array of delicious food options, fresh produce, gift items, and baked goods.

And for you foodies…Vero’s restaurants hold special thrills for seafood lovers with fresh local fish that you might never have heard of - and won’t likely find in other parts of the country: pompano, cobia, unicorn filefish, tripletail, snook, fresh water crappie, or any one of the 15 species of Grouper.

The finest Grouper dish to be had in Vero is at The Tides (3103 Cardinal Drive), Chef Leanne Kelleher’s intimate, upscale dining destination. It’s no wonder they’ve collected dining awards for their pan-seared, potato- crusted local grouper - with jumbo lump crabmeat, roasted shiitake mushrooms, and shallots, If seafood’s not your thing, you cannot go wrong with any of the entrees at The Tides.

The wine list has received the Award of Excellence from The Wine Spectator for 15 consecutive years. Are

you a crab or lobster fan? Roll up your sleeves, get your bib on, and hit the no-frills The Crab Stop (2263 14th Ave) - a crab and lobster feast without peer.

There’s also a “virtual ton” of riches in Italian dining: Trattoria Dario, Amalfi Grille, and Avanzare. Or try Pomodoro (3055 Cardinal Drive) for the best eggplant parmigiana you’ll ever taste.

For Asian cuisine, Siam Orchid (762 21st Street) should handle your inner oriental diner. Sushi, Thai curries and soups, and Japanese dishes.

In need of a beer? Orchid Island Brewery (2855 Ocean Drive), Vero’s only microbrewery, is a small family-run pub offering delicious home-brewed ales infused with Indian River County citrus.

Just a bit north on Route 1 is the charming riverfront district of Sebastian, home to one of the area’s hot spots, Captain Hiram’s, featuring fresh local seafood and tasty cocktails all with a Caribbean flair. Not your average eatery, Captain Hiram’s (named for a real life soldier who perished at Normandy) is a hotel, gift shop, banquet hall with sweeping water views, outdoor concert venue, and even a wedding stage at water’s edge.

If Caribbean cuisine’s your thing, Mo-Bay Grill, also on the Sebastian riverfront, is the best Jamaican food in the area, which makes sense since Chef Wesley Campbell was trained on the island nation. Highlights include Jamaican Jerk chicken, oxtail stew, curried goat, plantains, conch or codfish fritters - all mouthwatering.

And, as always, we suggest you call ahead for up-to-date information on all of the above treats. We think you will love Vero Beach.

SAFETY TIPS FOR NIGHT DRIVING

Aim your headlights. And make sure they are not blinding oncoming traffic.

Wear the right glasses.Use prescription glasses that have an anti-reflective coating, which

keeps light from bouncing around inside your lenses.

schools and local government.Board member, John Gentithes discussed the

proposal of lowering the Lake O levels to 10.5’. Since this will negatively impact Alliance communities in Delray Beach and other southern Palm Beach County residents the Alliance is working to insure the levels will not be lowered to more than 12.5’ levels. Lower than that and flora and fauna in the lake areas could become endangered. The Lake Worth Drainage District is in agreement with the Alliance.

The next meeting of the Delray Alliance will be on Wed., April 3, 2019. The topic will be “Atlantic Avenue Design & Timeline Updates” including interchange/Widening & East/West Thoroughfare. The Florida Department of Transportation will be providing this presentation.

Meetings take place at the South County Civic Center Civic Center, 16700 Jog Road, Delray Beach, across from Morikami. Doors open at 9AM when refreshments are served. The meeting begins at 9:30 and always concludes by 11:30. All are welcome. See you there.

It is a wonderful evening out and you will meet many friendly people.

We would like to encourage each Palm Greens resident to support any of the events that are taking place at Palm Greens, including the monthly shows put on by the Entertainment Committee.

MEDITATION... (continued from page 7)

At the end of our meditative sessions, Tirtzah says, we sometimes check-in with one another. Those who choose, share their feelings of tranquility, having a lightness, soul-renewing peacefulness, feeling refocused, clarity, renewal and calmness; each unique to their individual meditative session.

We look forward to expanding our repertoire by considering moving our session out-doors to one of the grassy areas (once per month), or by inviting guest meditation instructors; or using mantras, even using lights of varying colors. We are open to doable suggestions.

All residents are invited to participate, and we look forward to meeting everyone interested, even if only casually.

We meet every Wednesday (unless otherwise noted), at 4:00pm in the Crafts Room, outside of the Ball Room area. The class is held all year around to accommodate both Winter residents and Summer residents.

For more information contact Tirtzah Israel at 773-727-6040 cell; or by email at [email protected].

HELPFUL KITCHEN TIPS:

• To get rid of fruit stains on your fingers, rub them with a fresh, peeled potato or white vinegar.

• If you’re looking to keep your milk fresh for longer periods, try adding a pinch of salt to the container when you first open it.

• To clean an electric kettle with calcium buildup on the heating element, boil a mixture of half white vinegar and half water, then empty.

• When storing Tupperware, throw in a pinch of salt to keep them from getting odorous.

PLEASERECYCLE

untrained and have immediate access to a phone, call 911 or your local emergency number before beginning CPR. The dispatcher can instruct you in the proper procedures until help arrives.

Before you beginBefore starting CPR, check:• Is the environment safe for the person?• Is the person conscious or unconscious?• If the person appears unconscious, tap or shake his

or her shoulder and ask loudly, “Are you OK?”• If the person doesn’t respond and two people

are available, have one person call 911 or the local emergency number and get the AED, if one is available, and have the other person begin CPR.

• If you are alone and have immediate access to a telephone, call 911 or your local emergency number before beginning CPR. Get the AED, if one is available.

• As soon as an AED is available, deliver one shock if instructed by the device, then begin CPR.

The American Heart Association uses the letters C-A-B — compressions, airway, breathing — to help people remember the order to perform the steps of CPR.

Compressions: Restore blood circulation1. Put the person on his or her back on a firm surface.2. Kneel next to the person’s neck and shoulders.3. Place the heel of one hand over the center of the

person’s chest, between the nipples. Place your other hand on top of the first hand. Keep your elbows straight and position your shoulders directly above your hands.

4. Use your upper body weight (not just your arms) as you push straight down on (compress) the chest at least 2 inches (approximately 5 centimeters) but not greater than 2.4 inches (approximately 6 centimeters). Push hard at a rate of 100 to 120 compressions a minute.

5. If you haven’t been trained in CPR, continue chest compressions until there are signs of movement or until emergency medical personnel take over. If you have been trained in CPR, go on to opening the airway and rescue breathing.

Airway: Open the airway• If you’re trained in CPR and you’ve performed

30 chest compressions, open the person’s airway using the head-tilt, chin-lift maneuver. Put your palm on the person’s forehead and gently tilt the head back. Then with the other hand, gently lift the chin forward to open the airway.

Breathing: Breathe for the personRescue breathing can be mouth-to-mouth breathing

or mouth-to-nose breathing if the mouth is seriously injured or can’t be opened.

1. With the airway open (using the head-tilt, chin-lift maneuver), pinch the nostrils shut for mouth-to-mouth breathing and cover the person’s mouth with yours, making a seal.

2. Prepare to give two rescue breaths. Give the first rescue breath — lasting one second — and watch to see if the chest rises. If it does rise, give the second breath. If the chest doesn’t rise, repeat the head-tilt, chin-lift maneuver and then give the second breath. Thirty chest compressions followed by two rescue breaths is considered one cycle. Be careful not to provide too many breaths or to breathe with too much force.

3. Resume chest compressions to restore circulation.4. As soon as an automated external defibrillator

(AED) is available, apply it and follow the prompts. Administer one shock, then resume CPR — starting with chest compressions — for two more minutes before administering a second shock. If you’re not trained to use an AED, a 911 or other emergency medical operator may be able to guide you in its use. If an AED isn’t available, go to step 5 below.

5. Continue CPR until there are signs of movement or emergency medical personnel take over.

Applying CPR is serious business. If you are not sure about doing this or feel you might do more damage than good, GET HELP! If you know you can perform this possible life-saving function, know that you are making a major contribution to helping save someone’s life.
