Then they can “go viral”, using their CC’s to forward your note to thou-sands of additional folks… in the same way diseases spread from one to many. I don’t know about you, but I’ve never really had anything that important to say, eh? Yikes-squared! A “cam” was once the part of your automobile engine which caused the little valves to open and close at the precise instant they were re-quired to move. Today a “cam” is a hidden (or not so hidden) observa-tion camera, usually a security item but occasionally a covert eye with sometimes less than honorable intentions. You will be photographed by dozens of such devices (maybe many times that) in your trip to Ralphs or Albertsons or the bank this afternoon, or even just your constitutional walk around the block! They can be monitored over the internet from anywhere if you have the correct password. Cams and covert-cams are now easily available in clocks, desk accessories, pocket pens, exit signs, eye-glasses, even those that look like tiny Phillips screw-heads on a wall or bracket. Generally they are an advantage to you, a re-source for proving you or someone else was or was not a certain place at a critical time. Ask Abby Sciuto and Tim McGee about them! They call that progress – evolution – or perhaps de-volution is more accurate. Anyway, if you find yourself resisting all that, better step aside lest you be trampled by the new age. I gave in a long time ago, and except for this constant twitch and bleary mental state, I’m no worse for the wear. …I think… maybe. -fhs

Any of us who have ever read ancient documents like scripture or great literature are aware that words evolve over time, sometimes at an accelerated rate. Some mean things entirely different than they did earlier. The change is usually triggered by some event or discovery. Today that’s the information age. There is little doubt that our language has taken a huge turn, and simultaneously suffered a sucker punch from the digital revolution. You can add dozens of examples if you’ll just take few minutes to carefully listen to your teenagers (even middle agers now-a-days), but here are some of the more glaring changes: “Go To” or “Go There” used to mean “get in the car, or up on the horse, and travel to a destination.” Today they mean click on a link with a mouse, or tap a “touch screen.” Imagine Great Grandma if you told her in order to get the information she needed she would have to pick up her mouse and slide it around on a mouse-pad! “Drill Down” used to refer to a search for oil or perhaps water. Today that phrase means continue clicking on subsequent links till the desired “page” appears on a screen. (Not really a page at all, just an electronic reaction to a lot of 1’s and 0’s… but then…)“Google” was the onamanapia in a sound a baby made. Today it’s the thing that put the encyclopedia salesman out of business. Twitter was what a young girl did or was on the first date. Now it’s the place to find millions of people who wait anxiously everyday to discover what you ate for lunch. Google was once a noun, now it’s a noun, a verb, and a necessity. The web was once a creation of a spider, a bug catcher for his lunch. Now it’s how we communicate, publish, search, quiz, study, view, plan and find our mate! (Come to think of it, the black-widow spider used her web for two of those functions, finding her mate – who then became lunch, I understand!) Maids and Sweepers used to hate webs, today we couldn’t do without them! I submitted this article to your editor Phyllis Harkins on the web. My goodness! No more typed paper submissions, no more little 3-1/2” diskettes dropped by the Association office. “X it down” didn’t have a meaning at all in our day, or maybe it was a mis-spelling of “exit down” which was the stairway you used to avoid the elevator during a fire drill. Today X it down means turn off a display of a certain page. And then there’s “Yahoo”. Yahoo is what Grampa called the local alderman back home. Today it’s where you go to get your mail. “Text” used to be the end product of your time at the type-writer (remember those?). Now it’s a message that prints itself on the glass part of your telephone. And that does not consider terms like ‘sexting” and “text-sting” which take you to even deeper drill downs in our linguistic distortion. Yikes!!“CC” was a little annotation at the bottom of a letter which meant that the document you were reading was also committed as a fuzzy mushy impression of the original, to a file or some special person. Today “CC” is an entry window at the top of your e-mail, which is the way you send a copy of your missive to 3800 of your closest friends (BFF’s).

Letter to the EditorWhat an amazing winter we’ve had so far. About two weeks of winter temperatures and now temps are back to the mid to high 80s. Although it’s great weather for all, the lack of rain is critical in our State. It’s discouraging when water is running down our streets, due to overspray of yard sprinklers. Please check your sprinklers weekly, and adjust as needed. And consider converting your grass yard to desertscape. There have been many attractive, and water saving desertscapes installed in our community during the past year.

Lots of events are occurring the week of March 3rd. First the regu-lar monthly Association board meeting at 5pm on Tuesday, March 4th; immediately following the board meeting, the PDCCA annual owners’ meeting will be held in Alice Marble Hall. The agenda for the annual meeting is included in this edition. The board will be speaking with PDCCA owners regarding the four proposed Bylaw Amendments. The board encourages owners to attend both the open board meeting at 5 pm and the annual meeting at 6pm. And, if you are an owner and have not voted, please do so now. Every year it is costly for the Association to achieve voting quorum. The Association needs your vote!! Please contact the Association office for instructions on how to obtain a missing voting packet.

On Saturday March 7th, we host our 8th annual Neighborhood Watch pancake breakfast in the Association’s Alice Marble Hall. We have received confirmation that the M.A.D.D. crash car exhibit will be present; the Police and Fire Departments, along with C.O.P.S. have also confirmed their attendance at our event. So bring your appetite and come to our breakfast, hosted at no charge by the As-sociation board of directors. Breakfast starts at 8:30am; presenta-tions will begin at 9:15am. All residents of the Palm Desert Country Club community are invited to this no-charge breakfast.

Last month’s edition was a very full one, with many new ads. The advertisers help to offset the cost of printing and mailing this newsletter. Please continue to support them.

See you next month,Phyllis Harkins, Editor

We’re smack dab in the middle of the winter season and you’ve just gotten settled in – surely we don’t want to be thinking about planning our departure? Do we? Well, yes.

Owning a vacation home is one of the luxuries many people aspire to most. The idea of leaving a cold climate for one that is warm and pleasant is just so appealing. But that second home is a huge investment and one that shouldn’t be taken lightly.

The care of it, especially in an environment that endures an extremely harsh summer climate, can be confusing and sometimes downright intimidating. Old wives tales and bad information abound. Some people turn off their air conditioner, shut off the water, set out buckets of water, cover their windows, put chlorine in the toilets, cover them with saran wrap and call it a day. Nothing could be worse for your home.

Here are some things that could happen when you’re gone:

• No AC means dried out woods and fabrics – which shortens their life. It also means no one is home, which encourages vandalism.

• Shutting off the water nearly guarantees your home won’t flood, but it also means drain traps will dry out which can allow bugs and rodents to access your home. Gaskets and o’rings in your appliances can shrink, become brittle, or break which will eventually lead to leaks.

• Chlorine in a toilet tank will ultimately erode the rubber pieces in the tank, leading to a ‘running’ condition and/or leaking. No water flushing through fixtures also means the hot water tank can become stagnant. Bacteria can develop in as little as a week.

The best thing you can do is engage someone to monitor your home on a weekly basis in your absence. Someone who can look for potential problems and make sure the proper preventative maintenance measures are followed. Someone who cleans off the walkways and patios and knocks down cobwebs or picks up errant debris so your home looks occupied in order to help deter vandals.

If you’re reading this and thinking, “well I turn off the AC and water every year and nothing bad has happened yet”, please knock on wood and know that you’ve been very fortunate so far. Eventually, there WILL be a problem.

The bottom line is this: You need someone to make your home a priority and some-one who will care for it in your absence as you would if you were here. Someone who knows what to do in an emergency, who is dedicated to your home and who has experience taking care of empty properties. Someone who will monitor your other services to be sure they are being done properly too. Check credentials and references and, please, hire a company who is properly insured for this type of work.Make sure you know who is going to be in your home and that you feel you can trust them. It’s YOUR home and it’s a major investment. Don’t turn it over to just anyone.
