or many parents, nothing takes precedent over the quality of their children’s education. It is essential that for a child to suc-ceed in contemporary America, they must be equipped with sig-nificant knowledge and the confidence to utilize it. More to it, a

child’s education should take into account more than simply knowledge, but also the values and environment in which such knowledge is to be obtained. Privatized education offers some distinct advantages when it comes to these types of issues.

Every child is unique and possesses their own intellectual idiosyncrasies. They all learn differently, develop differently, and interact differently. Consequently, a one size fits all solution to a child’s education constrains their ability to fully realize the individual gifts with which they have been given. Private education allows parents to shop around for the best school that suits their child’s abilities and interests. For example, many private schools offer entrepreneurial programs, international programs, sports or clubs not typically offered at public schools, amongst other notable advantages. Why settle for whatever school is in your district when there are so many others that could give your child the unique opportunity to utilize their individual gifts, and pursue their individual passions? Parents take great care when shopping for a home, car, or even non-essential items such as clothing or utilities. It only makes sense that with something as potentially life altering as the education a child re-ceives should demand the same amount of customization.

Academic programs are a fundamental part of the education a child will receive and to that end, what makes each program effective will vary on the individual child. For a child that is interested in business, entrepreneurial programs give them a chance to enjoy learning valuable skills that generalized approach could not. In contrast, children inter-ested in science programs, which allow them to learn through experi-mentation and research, provide a much more efficient way to learn than if their institution embraced a one size fits all approach to subjects and programs. It is essential to understand that nothing can suppress the will of a child to learn more significantly than forcing them to learn in a way not conducive to their natural personality or interest. It may be that your child is not so incapable of understanding the material as it seems, but rather they feel like a fish out of water in the bureaucratic public system.

The smaller class sizes typically offered at private institutions also provide a significant advantage in terms of a child’s ability to process information, while blocking out distractions from other students in the

class. More to it, smaller class sizes will provide the child with special-ized attention from the instructor, which will in turn give them a more significant chance of processing and retaining the information desired. In large classes offered at public institutions, children become distract-ed and are unable to develop that personal connection with both their instructor, as well as the material itself. Parents are also able to speak more often with the instructor about the material and values being taught at their child’s institution, which gives them greater autonomy and peace of mind over the educational process.

Values - Another aspect of education that is often overlooked includes the values of the school delivering such education. Children are like sponges, and soak up information at a remarkable rate. On a typical day, a child spends more time at school than they do with their parents. That is a shocking fact most don’t pause to consider when determining which institution is best for their child. All too often, parents become worried when their child comes home from school expressing views or using language they would never have anticipated. It is essential to question to the highest degree what exactly is that particular child going to be learning, and who exactly are they going to be learning it from on a day to day basis. For many, the emotional cost parents often suffer when their children are taught values inconsistent with their own, far out-weighs the financial cost of customized education.

Safety - Of all the reasons to consider private education, there is per-haps none more pertinent than safety. If a child doesn’t feel safe in the environment they’re attempting to learn in, they will never be able to fully concentrate on their studies. Bullying is an epidemic that psychol-ogists are only now beginning to uncover the true emotional cost of. So heartbreaking it is for a child to have to suffer emotional or physical damage on a daily basis, simply because of the school district in which they reside. Drug use is also a particularly relevant factor to consider, given how life altering its effects are. Synthetic heroin has become a rampant issue for teenagers in the past decade, leading to tragic death and incalculable heartache for families. Investigating more thoroughly the environment in which a child will be receiving their education be-comes all the more critical as a consequence of these truths.

Of all the things we customize in our everyday lives, school choice is all too often over looked. With an issue as paramount to success in life as education, this is regrettable. Privatized education provides both par-ents and students with the tools and options they deserve to ensure success at the highest level. n

Miami Children’s Museum’s Early Childhood Institute (ECI) is a NAEYC accredited preschool where your child will play, learn, imagine and

create while developing a lifelong love of learning.

The Innovation Center at St. Brendan High Schoolrecently opened its doors to provide students with a new way of Catholic Education. The Innovation Center provides a facility for the school’s Academy Programs (STEM, Medical Sciences, Visual & Performing Arts, and Law & Global Business) to thrive and for the vision of the school to be fulfilled. St. Brendan encourages students to learn how to think, so they can understand their lives and the complex world. Learning how to think implies creativity, ingenuity, inquiry, group collaboration, and project based learning. The new classrooms are open spaces through which hands-on activities, group thinking, real life applications, and inventions flow. The hallways and stairs are learning accelerators where students are engaged and find creative ways to collaborate and think outside the box. New technology, media, and even the furniture help students feel at home and give them the desire to learn. This new type of 21st Century Catholic education results in mature and innovative students who are college and career ready.

When your child views foundational concepts through the lens of their own unique interests and talents, a love of learning is born. Each day is then fueled by an eagerness to explore new ideas, master complex subjects, and gain insights from their context and implications. As Miami’s premier college preparatory school, we bring innovation into the classroom through experiential education with relevance to the world outside.

Grounded in a commitment to academic depth and cultivation of whole child, our exceptional curriculum focuses on a student’s comprehensive development— intellectual, physical, social, emotional, aesthetic, and spiritual. Individual gifts and potential are transformed into extraordinary character. And your child emerges poised, confident and prepared to thrive in college and create a life with purpose.

At Palm Beach Day Academy, challenging academics are balanced by a nurturing, compassion-rich environment. From its globally focused curriculum to its professional development for teachers to its proac-tive relationships with alumni, board and community, Palm Beach Day Academy has become a world-class institution.

It not only competes with the nation’s best schools – it truly sets the standard for our nation’s educational excellence.

While staying true to its enduring purpose and core values, PBDA takes seriously its need to evolve with the times. This means preparing students to lead healthful, engaged lives in the digitally inte-grated 21st century.

Florida’s first independent school

As the state’s first independent school, founded in 1921, PBDA serves children age 2 through 9th grade on two campuses in Palm Beach County.

With a 6:1 school-wide, student-to-teacher ratio and two full-time, fully qualified teachers in each classroom for ages 2 through 3rd grade, everyone receives personal attention.

When PBDA students graduate and move on to the next phases of their lives, they’re not only ready to accomplish great things – they’re eager to!

“I can’t imagine a better, more caring school environment, not in Florida, not in New York City,” says parent and best-selling author

James Patterson. “Our son has been prepared for not only the best prep schools, but to go out into the world as a caring, well-informed teenag-er. Something of a rarity these days, no?”

Top-notch teachers

PBDA teachers are among the best in the nation; 85 percent hold Master’s degrees and more than a third have stud-ied at Harvard’s Project Zero, and the teachers emphasize critical thinking and provide freedom for students to apply concepts in personally meaningful ways.

What’s more, PBDA’s faculty can accommo-date students who possess diverse abilities and characteristics. A well-defined, challenging and flexible curriculum enables many students to work above grade level. An intentional public speaking and writing program begins at age 2, and a Museum Partnership Program and China Partnership Program are just two of the many unique programs students experience at PBDA. Among other things, students develop their crit-ical thinking, confidence and integrity.

John Thornton, who is a parent and the Chair-man of Barrick Gold Corporation, as well as Director of Global Lead-ership at Tsinghua University in Beijing says, “Palm Beach Day does a marvelous job of preparing students to be highly accomplished con-tributors in our rapidly changing world.” n

“Our school is truly a place of incredible energy. Our students are passionate

about their learning. They are doers, thinkers, and ask really great questions. As I

go from campus to campus, I see boys and girls who are curious to understand the

world and how to make it a better place.”

Pinecrest-based The Roig Academy, the little school with the BIG ideas, hosted an exclusive presentation featuring guest speaker Dr. Leonard Sax, physician, psychologist and critically acclaimed author. Dr. Sax, a renowned parenting expert, has spoken at length on is-

sues of child and adolescent development in the United States and abroad. The New York Times opinion columnist David Brooks calls Dr. Sax’s first book Why Gender Matters, “a lucid guide to male and female brain differences.” He has been featured on the Today Show, CNN, NPR, PBS, FOX News and the BBC among many other na-tional and international media outlets.

Dr. Sax spent the morning of Wednesday September 7 meeting with Roig Academy students, parents, faculty and staff. He spoke to students about the advantages and disadvantages social media and video games have on developing children. Dr. Sax also met with parents, teachers, faculty and staff to discuss how gender impacts learning and how boys learn differently than girls. Additionally, he provided advice to parents on being mindful to raise children as children, not as adults.

This same evening, at the University of Miami, faculty, parents community members and friends of The Roig Academy continued the evening with Dr. Sax for a lecture and book signing. n

fast-paced, globalized society.

Scheck Hillel Community School has expanded the role of one of its longtime educators as part of the school’s increased approach to personalized instruction and offerings. Head of School Dr. Ezra Levy has appointed Mr. Craig Carpentieri as Chief Academic Officer (CAO) to guide the school’s curriculum and instructional methods with an expanded focus on individualized student growth, opportu-nity and achievement. The CAO works within the Office of the Head of School.

“Empowering our students to reach their full potential so they find fulfillment, happiness and success is our priority here at Scheck Hillel,” Levy said. “As Chief Academic Officer, Craig Carpentieri will further customize and personalize the learning experience for each and every child by working hand in hand with teachers, administra-tors and parents. I am eager for all that’s ahead for our students this year and beyond.”

Upon a recent infusion of technology, digital tools and profession-al development throughout Scheck Hillel, Carpentieri will continue to deepen the offerings of the school’s personalized program through use of student data and modern, time-tested and emerging methods of education. He is a resource for the school’s roster of 250 educators.

“Ultimately, my role is to serve our students by supporting our talented, committed teachers,” Carpentieri said. “At Scheck Hillel, whether you are teaching toddlers in Early Childhood or teens pre-paring for college in biomedical engineering, you are here first and

Kesher LD (Miami)’s vision is to be the model and comprehensive resource in the provision of special needs education with in Jewish schools.

McGlannan School is an accredited research based private school for children with dyslexia and/or related language learning difficulties and has successfully remediated students with reading and processing challenges for over 52 years. The goal at McGlannan is to prepare the child in a supportive learning environment and to successfully mainstream while fostering self-esteem and maximiz-ing academic potential. There, education is individualized to meet each student’s needs. Interactive, multisensory clinical instruction is employed in all subject areas, and provides each student with 1:1 intensive session by trained reading clinicians.

The Marian Center School in Miami’s mission is to educate, train and serve people with developmental disabilities and

It is essential to understand that every child is given their own unique abilities, interests, and personality. Consequently, a one size fits all solution to their educational needs is setting them up for fail-ure. When students with a particular special need are not given the proper resources or environment in which to address these needs, they become frustrated, self-blaming, and in some circumstances angry as a result. This is not the child’s fault. Every child must be seen for the uniquely gifted and invaluable student that they are. You wouldn’t go to a general practitioner to root out a cardiac issue, one would take the more prudent approach of seeing a specialist. The same analogy applies with respect to education.

There are some schools that are specifically called special education schools.

Center Academy in Coral Springs specializes in providing a se-cure, inspired setting for students with learning differences. Center Academy is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, accepts McKay Scholarships, and provides a college prep environment for students with different learning styles.

Children’s Resources School in Miami is a co-ed K-1 special education school that offers programs and services that enhance the learning potential and life skills of young children.

The Carrie Brazer Center for Autism in Miami consists of a highly structured, consistent, cognitive & community based instruc-tion based solely on the principles of positive reinforcement and strives to teach the family as well as the child.

There are hundreds of private schools in Florida serving students with special needs.

Some special needs children that are served include those with learning difficulties

including ADHD/ADD, impairments such as mental, health, hearing, sight, speech difficulties,

orthopedic impairments, and serious emotional disturbances, to name a few.

foremost because you care about each child’s needs and creating op-portunities for success. I’m here to partner with my colleagues so that when we teach, every child soars.’”

Hallmarks of 2016 student achievement at Scheck Hillel include STEM students’ win of an interna-tional Technion University tech-nology challenge and invitations to keynote a New York engineering conference and present at a Denver educational technology conference. The Class of 2016 was accepted to schools like the University of Pennsylvania, University of Flori-da, University of Michigan, Duke University, Vanderbilt University, Yeshiva University, and many other colleges and gap year programs.

This CAO appointment advances Scheck Hillel’s strategic plan as it looks to its upcoming 50th anniversary in 2020.

“With student creativity and innovation as the guiding light, the Scheck Hillel experience is designed for students to carve out their own learning journeys within the school’s overall college prep, Jew-ish educational curriculum,” Levy said. “Initiatives in place today and those being planned for tomorrow are built upon deep Scheck Hillel tradition, mission and values, turning the page into our next chapter to develop rising generations with the knowledge and identity that fosters a bright Jewish future.”

Dr. Edwin P. Gordon was appointed Head of School of Palm Beach Day Academy, beginning July 2016. Dr. Gordon was the Head of Lower School at Riverdale Country School in New York. He has a M.A. in English from Baylor University and a Ph.D. in Education from Cornell University. His strategic priorities for PBDA focus on academic excellence, faculty development, lower campus facilities improvement, expanded STEAM and partnership opportunities. Along with his family, he is enjoying getting to know the PBDA community and the larger Palm Beach area.

assist them in wholeness, pursuant to the dictates of the Gospel and of the Church’s call to love, charity and justice.

The Open Doorway School in in West Palm Beach provides intense learning methodologies to engage the special needs of children in southeast Florida with autism, ADHD, Asperger’s Syndrome, bipolar disorders, dyslexia, speech impairment, William’s Syndrome and other special needs.

Spring Gate School in Plantation was designed for students with difficulties in learning, organizational skills, and social skills. Students receive a personalized education plan designed specifically for them.

Atlantis Academy in Miami, Coral Springs, and Palm Beach helps foster student self-confidence, through an individualized teaching program, that allows students the opportunity to discov-er their strengths and unique learning styles. They serve students, kindergarten through grade 12 or up to age 22, who have learning difficulties and struggle in traditional school. They also provide a low student-to-teacher ratio that gives more personalized learn-ing for the child. State standardized testing is not required. Atlantis Academy is proudly accredited by SACS and CASI, an accrediting division of AdvancED.

Scheck Hillel Community School in Miami offers Nativ which is South Florida’s first full-day program dedicated exclu-sively to children with dyslexia and related learning differences at

a Jewish day school. The Hebrew word for path, Nativ is designed to remediate learning challenges in the elementary grades. Nativ includes all aspects of Scheck Hillel’s curriculum including reading, language arts, math, science, social studies, Judaic Studies and He-brew. It also emphasizes a structured, multi-sensory, language-based curriculum that benefits students with dyslexia. By providing stu-dents with a supportive small group setting, every student is able to maximize his or her academic potential. Students learn strategies that eventually enable them to become more independent learners. Nativ’s ultimate goal is to enhance students’ abilities to successfully participate in all Scheck Hillel classes independently.

Access School in Davie, is an innovative school with a special-ty program called Arrowsmith, a program that retrains the brain, to make learning possible. Arrowsmith Program, is a program of cognitive suites meant to reprogram the brain, enabling students to overcome the stumbling blocks of whatever learning disabilities they may be experiencing.

There are numerous other worthy special education schools and the ones mentioned in this article are only a few of many excellent options. The overarching concept to be taken away from this analy-sis is that children with special needs deserve to have special schools to meet those needs. These children are no less worthy of the best education than the next child. By giving them the customized intel-lectual experience, they can be better able to utilize their strengths in a way that leads them to a happier, more successful life. n

Access School is an innovative school with a specialty program called Arrowsmith, a program that retrains the brain, to make learning possible.

The Martin family knew the public school system was not meeting their son’s needs. John-Robert ‘s cognitive shortcomings were so severe that he was failing to make the connections essential to succeed academically. More troubling was that there were no programs at school that offered the kind of help he needed....except for Access School.

At 11, his vocabulary wasn’t what it needed to be; he had to count using his fingers or objects, and he had extreme difficulty remembering instructions and information.

“We were getting worried and didn’t know where to turn,” said Debora Martin.

And not only were John-Robert’s learning disabilities affecting him in school, they were also isolating him at home and in social situations. Conversations with his parents and sisters were rare. Frustration was the norm.

Then the Martin family happened to read an article about Ac-cess School. Access School uses the innovative and highly success-ful Arrowsmith Program, a program of cognitive suites meant to reprogram the brain, enabling students to overcome the stumbling blocks of whatever learning disabilities they may be experiencing.

AccessSchool Director Claude LeFrancois says there are 19 learning disabilities, and most people normally suffer from one or two disabilities. But the students who attend his school – as is the case with John-Robert – have as many as eight or nine and with different severities. By identifying the cognitive weak spots and then retraining a student’s brain, kids are finally able to learn. It’s that simple.

Six months into attending Access School, and Debora Martin says the worry is gone – replaced by the certainty that her son will not only attend a mainstream high school, but that he will also do well.

“It’s been unbelievable,” she said. “He’s starting to remember steps, school work. He wants to help more around the house. He’s having conversations. He wants to know things.”

LeFrancois says this kind of result is the norm for students who enter the Access School program.

“It’s not a Band-Aid,” he states. “This is a true solution. Kids can leave here and attend regular programming and we are not passing the problem to the next grade. We are fixing the problem and the root cause.”

This type of program is like training an athlete. Everyone has the potential to develop weaknesses into strengths.

Taking cognitive weaknesses and retraining the brain to make those areas strong again, allows students to retain to feel confident as they become amazingly functional when it comes to recalling and using information.

Access School is really about how students process learning. The aim is to ensure that when the student returns to a main-stream school, he or she can absorb and retain permanently what is being taught.

After just a few months of this brain training, students begin to see results and after participating in the program for two or three years, students can finally enjoy school without the extra duress.

Access School is an intimate setting, with customized program-ming based on the principle of neuroplasticity, and where 30 or 35 students work with expert educators to rewire the brain, in order to make learning easier and to change lives.

Canadian educator, Barbara Arrowsmith-Young, who after years of her own frustration in the classroom, found a way to cor-rect her learning disabilities, and created the Arrowsmith Program more than three decades ago. Barbara had severe auditory and vi-sual memory issues as she struggled to understand concepts and meaning. Today her program is in 4 different countries.

Access School provides the Arrowsmith Program and it accepts McKay Scholarships along with The Step-Up scholarships.

The Perfect Fall Romantic Getaway

One of the greatest things about Florida is its proximity to the best beaches in the nation. As we all know, there’s no shortage of plac-es to stay. But even if you’ve been coming to Florida your whole life, you may not have experienced a place like this.

On the world-renowned Emerald Coast on the Gulf of Mexico you’ll find the Henderson Park Inn, a longtime favorite of visitors and locals looking for a quiet and romantic vacation or quick getaway. Blending modern luxury with Victorian charm, the Inn takes you back to another time. This getaway exudes a tranquility hard to match and feels secluded and miles away from the congestion of the Emerald Coast, but is still centrally located near all the great things Destin has offer. Did I mention that it’s an adults-only luxury boutique hotel?

Every room, uniquely appointed and decorated, has a private bal-cony, whirlpool tubs and ocean views. The 35 rooms are designed to make “staying in” completely acceptable or if you want to stay in the

area, leave the keys in your room and get around the area on a pair of complimentary bikes; it’s what the locals do. Grab your picnic lunch pro-vided by the Inn and then claim a spot for two on the powdery white sand beach nestled along the Henderson

Beach State Park — there’s ample room to find some seclusion. For total pampered privacy in your suite — think sumptuous bedding, a flat-screen TV, Wi-Fi and a private bathroom, plus concierge service for any additional flights of fancy.

Enjoy a romantic dinner without ever leaving the Inn. Dinner on the outdoor terrace at onsite BeachWalk Café is a must, as much for the atmosphere as for the farm-to-table menu, which changes seasonally. Iconic Gulf sunsets are best viewed from the hotel’s Tiki Bar — with fruity cocktails in hand and mingling with the other guests. Want to take your relationship to the next level? Henderson Park Inn has many different wedding venues which makes it an ideal spot for a destination wedding.
